Lisa - Rather you than me - but we're all different! When we first moved here I LOVED growing my vegetables, now I really can't be bothered. Fruit bushes/trees are great though as they are very little work. You definitely do not save money growing your own. I would say it is an expensive hobby and, oh, the PESTS ! But if you love it, you love it. I am now looking forward to bright lights, big city, with the scent of the sea. :D

Done my shopping, stripped and made beds. Now to make the ice cream. I did buy real champagne for tomorrow night because DSIL's boyfriend is retiring on that day. :drinker: Something to celebrate for sure! :D I remembered that the olives I have for guests have anchovy stuffing. He is allergic to fish. :o I bought some chilli olives instead as he is of Indian origin and loves hot food. :D

Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxx

Mary- remind me again of how you record your squats and swings; Is it sets x reps x weight?

    You got it! 3sets X 5reps x30 lbs.

Kelly - Sorry to hear you didn't make it into the group challenge but join in on the challenge as my partner! We can encourage each other on here. I am still working with my DH and he has made it 5 days now. We are working towards 40 lbs by the end of May. I'm not sure if I can or have that much to lose, but he does so I will work hard with him. I do hate restricting myself especially from foods I love. So, I will start with CICO and have my occasional donut as breakfast and Mt Dew as a snack! This week we are focused on exercising and just logging food. Not restricting all food but trying to stay under calorie goal. We are eventually going to go Keto for three weeks probably the beginning of February. Then re-evaluate.

Mary - I tried to join and answered the questions for the challenge but guess I didn't finish the process so I also didn't get in. What is Keto? I just did a goal sheet and have thirteen weeks before we leave on our Asia trip. As it turns out I need to lose 13.9 lbs. that seems doable, right?
Got to find something healthy for lunch, thinking tuna melt.

I'm sorry to hear that you did not make it into the challenge either. You can join me as a partner as well. 13.9 lbs is very doable in 13 weeks. Much easier if you commit to a challenge and have people to support you. Send me a friend request. Keto is HFLC high fat low carb, fat 70-75%, protein 20-15%, carbs 5-10%. My DH and I did this diet for one month and were losing 4 +pounds a week without even trying. A lot of bacon and eggs! I don't use protein powder so a lot of fatty meats, cheese and real butter. Supposedly natural fats in meat and dairy help nourish the brain and also put you into a fat burning mode. Your body burns fat instead of carbs. I strongly suggest using yourself into this diet by slowly cutting down on carbs. That is what my DH and I are doing for the month of January. We are going keto for the month of February.

There is also a group on here that has lots of information. CICO is also a good way to lose weight. But, I know the keto diet really does get rid of fat. It would be great to have another person along for the challenge!

Aw....my middle son made me breakfast.... He took the leftover taco meat, and added scrambled eggs, and cheese. You then put it in a tortilla. Which I did, and it was wonderful. I don't think I have any of my sons make breakfast before. He was even trying to scrub the pan clean, but I just said, you can just soak it in the sink for awhile.

It's been wonderful having him home. He was and has been my "Mr Mom" son. At 6 or 7 yrs old he would get up with my 3 yr old (now 18 yr old) and give him cereal, and play with him so I could sleep in. Of course I was hearing everything they were doing. Boys at that age can't really whisper and get away with it.... So sweet. The two of them were like twins 4 yrs. apart. Interchanging clothes, because my youngest son was so tall. When my youngest at 4 yrs old would be in the Burley trailer (it fit on the back of a bike but you could walk it like a stroller), I would walk the middle son to school, testing him on paragraphs he had to memorize. My 4 yr old would have the the paragraph memorized by the end of the week, so as my middle sons classmates lined up I would ask them if they had the paragraphs memorized to which some would say "No". I would point to my 4 yr old and say, "go ahead". Nothing worse than being showed up by a 4 yr old!

Hoping to go for a long walk today, its bright blue out but cold!

(((((hugs to all that wish them)))))))

Becca ~ So glad you are enjoying your son's visit. He sounds like quite a good young man.

Lenora ~ I grew up on a dairy farm. Every year we had a cow and pig to supply some of the meat for our families. All of my dad's relatives lived close by. There was always plenty to eat. It was wonderful on Friday nights when my mom went grocery shopping. We got to have sandwiches that night and potato chips. A rare treat.

About beans and rice ~ We love them together but have to have some ham to flavor.

Much colder here after several days in the 70's. My Japanese tulip tree is getting confused and beginning to bud. Hope it will decide to hibernate.

Yes I am still working on the bathroom remodel. I am now grouting the design part of the wall. This will need to dry then tomorrow I will do the body of the wall. Hopefully we will be done by summer LOL

Becca- you are so fortunate to have such a loving family! You deserve to be spoiled!

Carol - I don't know who started the beans and rice debate but, I have an aversion to beans. When I was really young I got sick after eating them and since then do not really care for them. I will eat my husband's chili, but that is as far as I go. I really haven't eaten much rice since I started M FP. I will usually have a small spoonful when I have some Chinese food.

Walked dogs for 2 miles then sat and sorted papers in prep for tax season. Now, going to go knit for a while I think, though I'd like to get in some Yoga.... do that first? Hmm.

Mary from Minnesota – I have not had a Coke or any other kind of soda in over a year-and-a-half. Don’t miss them and if Louis buys donuts, I factor that into my CI for the day. I sighed up for the challenge that starts on January 2, 2017; just not sure I can actually follow it, we'll see.

NYKaren ... I spent several hours this morning going over our year-end expenses and looking to the New Year budget. My DH has been dragging his feet for over two years now on committing to a serious budget. Like you, we want to pay off our portion of the tuition loans (son is on his own with his) and set a realistic retirement date. I've been reading various pinterest posts on frugality/budgeting. I know we can do it ... just need to get my overly kind and generous husband to on board.

Lisa ... my DH and I were watching the Last Alaskans last night on television. We often enjoy shows that highlight the off-grid/self-sufficient lifestyles of some hardy souls. We decided we could not do it. When we were younger, we talked about it a lot ... the past year has pretty much taken the wind out of our sails in that regard. BUT .. I would still love to be more self-sufficient to the level we could sustain. While we're in an area zoned for farming, the most we would ever attempt would be chickens. Right now we don't even have a decent garden and that I intend to change this summer ... so chickens would actually be our triumph! Keep us posted on your progress with homesteading!

Cheri ... I finally got my messages to work ... so sent you my email!

Tonight I made a cherry pie ... the guys begged that I bake again before I get really serious about healthy eating! I'm a push over!

:)Rita, I make resolutions for each month on this thread. The only thing I do for the whole year is choose a word that will be my theme for the year:
    2013--stretch
    2014--mindful
    2015--now
    2016--alacrity
    2017--balance

barbie I like your word for 2017 <3

Beth I think my financial journey is similar to my healthier lifestyle journey--it's now or never, times run in' out so I've got to get a grip. Kind of like CICO, but $in$out!

Today we walked through manhattan, bookstores, libraries and dumplings! As we were leaving the ny public library, snow was falling and my Florida nephew's eyes just lit up! Classic ny day, my dogs are bark in' but very happy day. Will have to go to bed early tonite.
    Until tomorrow lovely ladies. NYKAREN

Hi ladies: Kind of a routine day and I am enjoying it. DH left for a while to run errands and I had the house to myself. I like that. I did get a few things done other than have-to's but mostly just a laid back day. Did much better on eating than I have been. I got on that old sugar junk over Christmas.

Re - If building your fence is anything like DD and I building pasture fencing you should definitely burn some calories.

    Rori - Love the kitty!

DJ - Congratulations on your win!

Cheri - Wrist parties! I love it, keep them going.

    Charleen - Love the umbrella.

Barbie - Balance seems a very good word for the new year.

Lisa - Glad you got some results and that meds can help.

Grits, weren't you doing a doctor supervised med-fast type diet or do I have you confused with someone else? Are you still doing it?

I'm going to try an anti-inflammatory eating plan. It includes giving up lots of stuff like sugar, artificial sweetener, dairy, most grains, and processed foods. It's pretty Paleo, I think. Has anybody tried this with any kind of success? Like Margaret, my knees (and feet, too) have been waking me up at night. I've got to try something to relieve the pain.

I'm home from NOLA, had a good time I guess in spite of the family drama, and spent today with old friends watching the UGA/TCU game. Yay! Go Dawgs! Tomorrow I need to get the Christmas decorations put away.

Katla: Hope all goes well with DH’s cataract surgeries. Here’s to great vision in the new year!

Michelle: What is your recipe for ribs in the crockpot? I’m a newbie to cooking ribs, which I absolutely love.

Gloria: Reviewing boring documents for 8 hours would make anyone sleepy. Glad the fitbit gets you up to stretch and inhale.

Lisa: Yay for getting more sleep and dropping 3 pounds. Homesteading sounds like a ton of work. You’re a tougher gal than I!

Heather: The weekend meal sounds delish. Enjoy every morsel and bubbly treat. You’ve made many people smile with your holiday graciousness and yummy meals.

NYKaren: I love the Strand bookstore, too. NYC during holidays is magical. BTW: I’ll be in Briarcliff Manor end of January. Is that close to you?

Carol: Comforting prayers for your brother. What a blow.

KJ: Cheering you for showing compassion and patience to your challenging sister, AND dropping 5 pounds.

Rita: I don’t set annual goals. I’m too fickle and change my mind, or totally forget what my intentions were. Oh, and there is that little thing called ‘reality’ which takes it’s best shot at destroying plans. So for me, a few monthly, attainable behavior changes is as much as I’ll commit to.

Cheri: Sounds like you’ve really come to love your new location if you are already thinking about buying. My DH has a different bowl game on everyday. Yawn.

Becca: Middle son sounds like a sweetie. Good job, Mom.

Mary: Thanks for the info on keto. Something to think about, for sure. I’ve done well eliminating alcohol, so maybe it’s time to take similar discipline with carbs.

Sue: I love that quote from Arthur Ashe. Putting it into my toolkit.

No big plans for the weekend. I’d love to get out and ice skate on this big lake:
    www.sunset.com/travel/top-10-ice-skating-rinks/evergreen-lake-ice-skating-rink

Might also start getting my tax organizer completed. Yeech.

Stay well, friends. We can do this.
    Rori
    Colorado Foothills

    December Goals:
Tabata training a minimum of 3 times per week
Go ice skating at least once this month
Drink a glass of water with lemon juice every day
Meditate at least 15 minutes every day.
Be lighter (thanks Lisa for coining this goal)

Drkatiebug - Good luck! Make sure that you ease your self into that type of eating. There is a thing called the Paleo flu that you can get if you cut out everything too quickly. I had to do that type of diet when I first got Lymes in 2014. It was to detox my liver mainly. I didn't have any issue with it. I don't know if I noticed anything about my joints though. Paleo and Keto are very similar. I do know that you will lose a lot of fat if you have any to lose.
