Did 50 minutes of a Patrick Goudeau DVD on the rebounder. The plan for tomorrow is to do Jillian Michael's 30 day Shred DVD
It was REAL windy here yesterday. As you can see from the videos, we had two standing things at the front door. Well, one of them blew over and got destroyed. Vince thinks tonight he'll probably bring them in since it looks really bad having the broken one there. We had a mat over an extension cord so no one would trip on the cord, the mat was blown down the sidewalk. One of the other blowmolds was turned around.
katla - Vince had cataract surgery two years ago. Let me tell you, he was scared at first. And I do mean scared. But the minute they took the bandage off his eye, the first thing he said was "when can we do the other eye?"
Lenora - I take my laptop to the Y (since they have the equipment), put it in and start it. The weird thing is that the sound doesn't cut out on me at home. So what's the difference between there and home? It must be clean if it plays fine at home. I'm sort-of like you, no black olives. I can handle onions, tho. Ken and Lynette are coming here tomorrow for dinner. I found this recipe for ribs in the crockpot which I'm thinking that I'd like to try. I'll make rice to serve it on, I'm also thinking of making biscuits (mainly since if they don't get eaten I can always freeze them for Vince to have). A lady at ACMoore where I go for help with my crochet made this apple/cranberry thing. I'm going to try it. But the recipe does call for spiced oatmeal in a packet and I don't really do packets (too much sugar) so I'm going to try using oatmeal and adding spices. Then I'll make these lemonade cookies mainly since I can also take them to the gal at mahjongg this Monday. Hope your gd gets better fast. I remember a friend of mine got a fitbit. She was holding her pocketbook on her shoulder so it wasn't registering the steps she was taking. I got this armband for my phone for Christmas. I'm going to try downloading a radio station app. Next week the plan for Wednesday is to try out the new Stairmaster, so I'm hoping to listen to the radio while I'm on there.
Gloria - I got rearended the other day, too. It was early (I was on my way to exercise). For as hard as the impact was, I was very surprised that there wasn't any damage to my or the other car. The kid admitted that he wasn't paying attention. He wasn't on his phone, he was just daydreaming.
Exercised then went to Aldi, then stopped at Habitat for Humanity, they were having 50% off dining rooms so I thought I'd give a look for our downstairs. The one I saw Vince didn't like, so we'll just wait. I would like to have additional seating down there. Then went to WalMart because Aldi didn't have some of the things that I needed. I was surprised at how crowded it was! Then came home and made biscuits that I'll bake for tomorrow, cut up the spare ribs to cook for tomorrow, made pork chops for us to have New Years (can't have fowl, you know!), now I'm cooking noodles for Vince
Gloria - I tried every few days to just post something on my homepage in the hopes that someone would copy and paste it just to let people know that I'm still around, what's going on, that I plan to be back but I was just super busy. Thanks so much for your concern. I'm so sorry about your sister
Vince took his Outlook to get the headlight replaced. You would think that replacing a headlight would be no problem at all. Not when the first direction is "remove the wheel"
After the high winds, Vince just found out that the arches aren't working. That points to something with the controller, don't know what. He says the simple answer would be a problem with the ethernet cable, but I suspect things aren't going to be simple. Or maybe an RJ45 jack is bad. We'll have to see.
Carol - I don't recall that this recipe calls for barbecue sauce, I remember it has pineapple. Should be interesting. I'm going to make this cranberry/apple crunch only I'm going to make my own spiced oatmeal rather than buying it. I thought for sure that WalMart sold a bag of assorted apples, but they don't. So I wound up buying one of about 5 different varieties. I made the biscuits once before but used only the cream cheese. I think they need the butter to get the flakiness so I used butter this time. If we eat a lot of them, I can always make more since I have another 4 oz of cream cheese. I'm with you, I prefer the convenience of buying foods. But I'm also like you in that I'm cheap. Almost all my clothes come from the salvation army, most things except for pants. I need a petite and they almost never have petite pants. But I can usually fit into lady shorts. So sorry for your brother. How horrible!
KJ - congrats on the loss. The Wii isn't really smiling at me but the weight is going <singing> "down, down, down"
I don't like to drive and talk on the phone. As a matter of fact, one time I pulled over to the side of the road to talk on the phone and someone stopped to ask me if I was alright. I just told him that I didn't like being on the road on the phone. Not that I never do it, especially when we're on the road to FL. Vince and I have to coordinate where to meet for lunch/get gas, that sort of thing. But I try not to be on the phone if I can at all help it. Vince got me a bluetooth but I can't remember the last time I used it!
Rita - I usually don't make New Years resolutions.
Sue in TX - when Vince had his cataract surgery, one thing that he was amazed at was how white the newspaper was!
Cheri - while you're in the cleaning mode, North Carolina isn't that far away you know....just sayin'
Lenora - continue buying that Uncle Bens. They're part of Mars, Inc.
Kim - LOL still working on Christmas cards!!!!
Speaking of pies - every time I make an apple pie (the only kind Vince will eat), it's either runny, if I put more cornstarch in it it's "gummy", there is always a big gap between the apples and the crust even tho I put lots of vents in it. Anyone have ideas of what they do?
Rori - The recipe is from Fix It & Forget it Lightly. it calls for 8 country style pork ribs, black pepper to taste, 20oz can unsweetened pineapple tidbits, 2T Dijon mustard, 2T fast cooking tapioca (optional). Slice ribs into 8 sections. Place in slow cooker sprayed with nonfat cooking spray. Combine remaining ingredients. Pour over ribs. Cover. Cook on low 6-8 hours. If you wish, 30 minutes before the end of the cooking time, stir in tapioca in order to thicken the cooking juices. Per serving: 130 calories, 5g fat, 1.5g sat, 25mg chol, 210mg sodium, 13g carb, 1g fiber, 11g sugar, 9g protein, 10% vit. C, 4% calcium, 8% iron. We shall see how it turns out!!!!

Last night at bedtime, Jake felt some irregularities in his heart rhythm (he has a pacemaker and defibrilator) and is under the care of a cardiologist. He called the nurse at the hospital to find out what to do and she said to call 911. They were here almost instantly and after hooking him up to some monitors, decided to take him to the hospital. I walked Sasha, packed up snacks, phone, book, and kindle and drove over to be with him (less than a 30 minute drive). They kept him there for several hours hooked up to monitors and did two blood tests. Two doctors talked to him and finally concluded that it was safe for him to come home. While we were there, three other patients got airlifted to hospitals in Seattle. We felt very fortunate. We got home after 2 AM. and I got up at 5:30 so I'd have time to walk Sasha and be ready to be at my dance class by 9 AM. Today Jake talked to his local doctor and the cardiologist and he'll be going to Seattle for nuclear stress test on Tuesday January 10. They tried to schedule it for Friday the 6th but he told them that it wouldn't work for him (that's the day I teach my class). So we're taking it one day at a time.

Rori - wrote "No big plans for the weekend. I’d love to get out and ice skate on this big lake.
Thank you so much for the link. I've ice skated on that lake many a time with our church youth group when in Junior and Senior High School. Had not thought about it in years. Thank you.

We just discovered Aldi. That is to say we've seen them before and have had access but there was no way the hubs was going to "PAY" to use a cart. So that was that...until he researched it and realized he got his quarter back if he returned the cart!!! To bad cause all those years he could have been enjoying the bounty of Aldi. They have some really good prices on produce. Usually it is near or at ripeness so have to use right away. And he loves their bread!
Well I did not get the cleaning done I had intended for today. But it is still on the list. Next week hubs goes back to work and I will have time to devote to the "chores". I must earn my "30 mins. light cleaning" for exercise credit on MFP after all. We went to the gym, picked up hubs car, had lunch, watched a movie (The Family Stone), did some laundry, researched couches at IKEA for our son (going to Houston tomorrow on his invitation and will take him there for a much needed couch), had dinner at Jason's Deli (salad bar), finished up laundry, lit Hanukkah candles, fixed printer problem on my computer and are now watching football (again).

Cheri: Sounds like you’ve really come to love your new location if you are already thinking about buying. My DH has a different bowl game on everyday. Yawn.

We really have settled in nicely here in College Station. We were out to dinner with several other people we did not know on the invitation of an acquaintance and many of them moaned about living here and we really couldn't disagree with more! All I know is that I am content for the first time in many, many years. The hubs is content/happy also which is a huge blessing. We have access to all the comforts we would want or need easily here in College Station. I'm going with the flow right now!
And we are watching ..... football....again!

Gloria: Thanks for your kind words about DH's situation. I'm grateful that this is just cataracts, too. I hope the surgeries are totally successful. Praying. . . :flowerforyou:
Heather: I agree with NYKaren. Your DH is wonderful. I hope his drive turned out to be easy, with no big traffic jams.
KJLaMore: Congratulations on your 5 lb loss. WTG!!!
Rita: I don't make January resolutions beyond 'do the best I can.' I set resolutions whenever something comes along that makes it is clear that I need to change in how I'm living. Since you make resolutions for the New Year, I wish you great success with this year's resolutions.
SueBDew in TX: Thanks for your encouraging words about cataract surgery. :flowerforyou:
Lenora: We do a lot of driving in the rain in Oregon and most people here are competent rainy-day drivers. Snowy-day driving is a whole different deal. People are not good at driving in snow because we get so little practice. :noway: One of the issues in areas where there isn't a lot of rain is also lack of practice, in addition to the possibility of a good deal of oily exhaust soot turning roads into a very slick mess. :grumble:
Heather: You have awesome hostess skills. I admire that. I think the stevia replacing part of the sugar in your recipe is likely to be a big success. Good luck.
Becca: You are a great mom with wonderful sons. They are very handsome & I bet they get their good looks from you.
Sue in WA: I love the Arthur Ashe quotation. :flowerforyou:
Dr Katie: My eating practices might be similar to what you are considering. Carbs yesterday were 32%, protein 22% and fat 46%. Today carbs are 47% fat is 23% and protein is 30%. I always count calories. I usually feel very good eating this way. I don't follow any particular plan. I simply eat things that help me feel good and pay attention over time. It is an ongoing experiment and I certainly don't suffer. Portion control is important. If I eat too much I burn it off by walking, or riding my bike in the garage. I hope you find ways to enjoy your meals and succeed with your health goals.
Rori: Thanks for your good wishes for DH's cataract surgeries. I'll pass them along to him.
Michele: Thanks for the encouragement regarding DH's cataract surgery.
Barbie: I'll be sending good thoughts Jake's way. I hope the doctors can adjust things so that he feels better and doesn't have worrisome symptoms.
Cheri: I'm so happy to hear that you love living in College Station. What a blessing for you both. :flowerforyou:
I am looking forward to my riding lesson tomorrow. I hope for decent weather and a good experience. DH is usually totally supportive of my riding, but it makes him worry now. He can't drive at this point and that makes me the only driver until his eyes are healed from the upcoming surgeries. I'll be as careful as I can.

Hello friends -
I've been checking up on all of your antics. Just haven't posted for a few days. I've had very nice holidays, some time with friends, a day trip to north Georgia with hubby to check on surveying our property down there, and had some rewarding hours at work. I'm ready to get back on track with a healthy food and exercise plan. I have gained 24 pounds this year and enough is enough!
Congrats to those of you who are losers. Hugs to those of you with health and family struggles.
Goodnight, sleep tight!

Morning, all... looking forward to seeing the back of 2016, and beginning 2017.
Joyce - I'm so sorry you hurt, honey... hope it resolves soon so you can enjoy your family!
On the homesteading thing--thinking about the things that can be grown/raised, etc., is definitely about determination to grow our own, but there's also a rational decision of whether, on a case by case basis, it makes sense cost-wise. Some things will, some things won't. Some things (like baking fresh bread), we'll do simply because they taste better and there is so much eating satisfaction in them, even though it's probably a wash cost-wise.
And Lenora, thank you on the advice about buying part of a cow--we've actually done that (but only a quarter) a couple times, as there's a butcher near us here that offers it. It was enormously cost effective, dropping the price of beef to an average of about $3 a pound, when you can't even get ground beef for that price anymore. However, freezer space really is the key. Which we do not have right now--RV freezer fits a few things, full-size refrigerator's freezer in the warehouse fits a few more, but even a quarter of beef takes up half a full-size upright or chest freezer. So not an option now, but perhaps for the future. If anyone wants to see where my research is taking me on these questions, I've started a blog about it called Homesteadiness.
On the diagnosis of hypothyroidism - it is a relief to get a diagnosis finally (thank you, Sue!) that explains this constant fatigue and inability to lose weight, and I had my suspicions it was coming. All other tests were perfect except one, which showed my bad cholesterol (LDL) was high. My ratios were great, which means the good cholesterol (HDL) was very high... and my research shows the high LDL is also possibly a symptom of the thyroid issue. But, any correlation factor that points at eventual heart issues is a wakeup, as my mother had her first heart attack when she was five years younger than I am now. Both parents died of stroke-related issues.
So, my DH is already on it (love this guy for a reason!). I have high protein needs after the gastric bypass, and particularly when I'm working out regularly... so he's researching recipes for plant-based proteins, like lentils and beans, as well as fish-based proteins. He's not fond of fish as a protein source, but willing to make it for me.
Lots to think about...
Love y'all,
Lisa in West Texas1 -
Kate UK0 -
Hi all
Lisa - So glad you have got that diagnosis. It will change so much for you, but might take a while to get the dosage right, judging by several others I have known.
The LDL could be genetic, so statins could be necessary. The very best thing for sorting out most things is the magic pill - regular, vigorous exercise. It's no wonder you haven't felt much like it with the thyroid problem. :flowerforyou:
I decided to grow things that tasted much better than you could buy. In the end I had to give up on anything brassica related as we are plagued with cabbage white butterflies that somehow find their way behind the finest netting. Plus our slugs adore them. Spent a fortune on trying to keep them off, not the least on beer for the beer traps.
Anyone I know who has chickens, (Beth), considers them an expensive hobby, however much they love the beautiful, warm eggs. Fox protection is essential and is not cheap and even then, ineffective.
NY KAREN - Your evocation of NYC made me very nostalgic. I sooooooooooooo loved my trip there.
Barbie - Sending healing thoughts for Jake. What a business!
Hope you get home safely, Allie.
I've exercised, washed my hair and now relaxing. Everything I need is out of the freezer. I will lay the table in sparkly style after lunch and put on my party face and flashing earrings. :drinker: They arrive at 4 pm. I want yo make it all nice for them as DSIL has been amazing during the family trauma and her boyfriend has been very supportive to her.

Rita, I make resolutions for each month on this thread. The only thing I do for the whole year is choose a word that will be my theme for the year:
2013--stretch
2014--mindful
2015--now
2016--alacrity
2017--balance
I like that word Too! I think I will join you , I need balance both mentally and physically

Quick shout-out to let you know things are going well here.
One of my Christmas presents was a t-shirt with the text
What happens in Vermont stays in Vermont.
But nothing ever really happens here.
That's a fairly accurate description. We read, play cards, sing and make music, talk, watch movies. Then there's all the food-related stuff: shopping, cooking, eating, washing dishes (which takes some time when it's done by hand for eight people). I've baked my "world famous" sourdough bread and walnut bread a couple times. My husband put together a digital slide show yesterday from family gatherings over the past 15 years. (He has a capacious memory stick that takes 128 GB.) We hooked his computer up to the big flat screen TV beside the fireplace and everyone gathered round.
We'll be heading back to New Hampshire tomorrow, then via Boston to Norway the next day.
Happy New Year everyone!

I only have two resolutions that I repeat each year: lose weight and get finances under control.
Started the year at 210 pounds, ending at 184.
Goal for 2017 is to end year at 145 pounds.
Finances started out bad last year, improved, then went south again when I was forced to retire.
Goal for 2017 to get a good budget we can work with and make decisions on moving working towards better financial stability since we are both retired now.
Very general and doable. With the lovely ladies here support and hard work, I know I can make both.
Off to walk dogs.

I have everything prepared. Now lying on the sofa. I have some great colour changing candles I bought for DH's 70th birthday. I've put three on the table.

Joining fitness challenge has gotten me to start to log food again. I found this very helpful.
Mary a number from my team asked to be friends. Does that help in the challenge? I just want to make sure I have the time to log and keep up with this forum. How often do they ask for a progress report? Thanks.0
