I do this alot ill walk 10-15 miles just so i can eat more, Lots more with that many miles.
Never really considered if this is normal or healthy or not. Anyone else do this? Sometimes i just really like to eat bulk food instead of 1200 calories. And i like walking so why not really. -shrugs- Been working for me so far. Kind of like planned indulging
Anyone know if this could be bad for me going from 1200 to closer to 2,000-2500 with walking some days at random.

Exercise bulimia is a thing (people who exercise a lot to burn off calories) and it can be damaging, but just being active isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Is it interfering with other parts of your life? Is it putting you at risk for injury or causing you to skip appropriate rest days?
I would just look at where it fit with the rest of my life. There is nothing inherently wrong with increasing your TDEE.12 -
Walking that much would make me starving. Then I'd overeat and defeat the whole purpose. I can see doing some exercise to eat more - but that would be too much for me.8

It probably takes a professional to diagnose a real problem. Although it is extremely common for people to exercise so they can eat more or as punishment for indulging, I really don't like that mindset. Exercise should mostly be done to improve fitness and make your quality of life better. Calorie burn and it's helpfulness to weight loss is a bonus. I know every now and then an extra hard or long workout to offset and indulgence isn't a big deal, but it shouldn't be the norm.8

Nah i just do it sometimes when i feel like binge eating ill walk extra long to get the calories for an extra meal. Havent been working so had alot of free time. I did just get a new job as a mover though so all that walking leg strength is going to work out well for me anyway lol.4 -
I like to only eat back half of the calories I burn. Either way as long as it's manageable it sounds healthy. The word "binge" is concerning, but I don't think you meant it like that.2

Personally I wouldn't walk that much just to earn 800 cals more for the day.
There is nothing wrong with the distance or the walking per se, but I would look at my calorie goal, macros, micros and see where I could find the calories and foods that would satiate me.
Can you change your goal for a lower loss per week?
I would also look for something that gave be a higher calorie burn per hour than walking. I don't have the inclination or time to walk that amount.
If it suits you long term, into maintenance and beyond, fine, carry on. Personally I would increase my calorie goal, my daily activity level, find a higher burning exercise, and learn to manage my portion sizes.
Cheers, h.1 -
I get it, lol. I typically spend 1.5 hour on my exercise bike, and might go for a 3.5 mile walk too (when it's nice out. Hasn't really happened lately). I need the extra calories.
However, I agree that some days it seems to make me much hungrier than the calories I gain from it.2 -

Im fine with eating 1200 a day just lately iv discovered a few hours walkign i can eat an entire thin crust pizza. Its a delicious way to waste time6 -
I do this, initially it was just to lose weight but now technically I should be at maintenance. I have decided, I want to eat chocolate etc. again so I make sure I have more than enough cals to eat whatever the hell I like at night2

Cool so its semi normal im hearing as long as it doesnt effect my life. I started as a way to increase my defecit, And ensure i had enough calories for a few beers a week. Maybe a pizza or something. I love pizza ;D1 -
I posted this on another thread - I think it applies here too
Lot of good posts above. What I have always found to be true is that your diet (meaning what you eat - not some diet program) is 90% of controlling your weight. Exercise is a nice complement to creating a calorie deficit - but the heavy lifting comes from how many calories you consume. Exercise is 100% if your FITNESS. Balance, strength endurance. In my personal experience, focus on diet for weight management and exercise for physical fitness.
You can eat in 5 minutes what will take an hour of hard work to exercise off. That is a losing equation if you ask me. If you depend on burning 800 calories a day via exercise so you can eat more - that probably works for some people, but it always seemed risky to me. What if I was injured, what if I got sick or just missed some days for whatever reason. Now I am accustom to eating many more calories than I need in the absence of working out.
I am not anti-exercise - I just think the focus of exercise is mainly fitness and just complementary to weight loss. There are a million great reasons to exercise.

For me that's satisfying. Having that fear of logging something like a whole pizza or something pretty big but realising you still have plenty of room for something else big and nasty...... especially if you get the 'low cal' pizza options0 -
ME!, I do 2 to 3 hours, eat and drink what I want. it works for me!7

I do the same thing sometimes. Occasionally I like to indulge at an all you can eat fish fry with my family or some other meal or outing where I know I'm gonna eat way more than my allotted 1200 calories.
If I know I'm going out, I'll shave off less calories the days leading up to it (do 1000-1100 per day) and also do an extra work out.
I don't see it as a problem unless you let it control your life.0 -

A thin crust pizza (decent size) from the store is under 800 calories. Sucks if you only have 1200 a day, But super doable if you burn a few hundred off walkign for another m eal in your day. Yum. I don't really get any guilt over it. Just work to make it fit Helps that i walk 4 miles just to buy it from the store when i want it3 -
I do it from time to time too, also i will sometimes bank my macros so i can eat more of one thing in a larger portion in a given week.
Idk if its unhealthy or a problem but i know i love it and haven't had any issues or set backs2 -

Yeah it's a good point, lol. But in my experience, if I get sick or have to miss a few days, it doesn't make any difference in the long run (if I'm too busy to get a workout, I still typically get a lot of activity, and I usually end up eating less anyway).
The key always is to make sure that your habits are sustainable though.5 -

That is a little nugget of wisdom right there.

I wouldn't say it was long exercise for me, but I do at least 60 minutes of cardio every single day just so I can have a larger meal while still losing weight at ~2 pounds per week.4

Look at my diary for yesterday. My thin-crust pizza is fun and easy to make, and gives me ~400 calories.2 -
I love to build and reinforce the connection in my brain between food and energy. I feel like that is a healthy attitude toward nutrition and activity. That being said, I feel like there is a line that could potentially be crossed if the drive to exercise or the drive to binge eat are obsessive.2

I do, I prelog my day every morning and a lot of the time i start off in the red, and then i walk it off until I'm back in the green again, I average around 15kms a day. If I'm going out for dinner and I know it's gonna be a calorie laden meal, then i'll walk more that day to fit it in.
Yesterday i did it kinda backward, i logged as i ate, and i didnt manage to exercise it all off, i ended up 200 calories over at the end of the day... But today I'm full of energy and not hungry at all, so it'll even itself out.
So to get to the point.. Yes, I exercise purely to eat more.6 -
Yes, I def exercise to eat more5

This is pretty much where I stand...0 -
I maintain at just about 1400 cals. You bet I walk a lot to get more food! LOL I would like to find some balance, tho. Learn to be content with fewer treats so I can have time for a hobby or something.1
-
Okay so if anyones here. Here is my fitbits stats, I got a new job and celebrated walking more If my fitbit says 2600 calories, And my food log says to eat 2600 calories, Which do i listen to closer?
If iv only burned 2,600 calories wouldnt eating 2600 calories put me at even with no weight loss? Normally i eat a few hundred back of what it gives me, Never had it give me 1400 extra calories back from exercise before not sure what to do LOL

Burn to earn. Be it walking, cycling, running, swimming. Cardio can burn huge calories so you can indeed chow down. I love my weekend bike training rides (or races) that are usually 1000 - 2000 calories of burn.
You can also use the longer exercise to balance out the CICO equation in your favor (be it to equal a deficit, or maintenance).
It's pretty normal stuff. So you're good.3 -
If I had all the time in the world I would rather do hours of walking/exercise and eat at maintenance to create a deficit. However due to working full time it's not possible so I compromise with however much exercise fits my schedule.1
