Yasss, another good run today! Felt better than yesterday, legs felt good, just felt good to be running and moving! Totally falling in love with my Altras. I have a hugely difficult time finding shoes that don't cause foot numbness. Brooks Glycerins have been my go to's, since they are actually comfortable for me. This is the first time I have found another pair of shoes that is just as comfortable, with no foot numbness issues. I'm gonna have to check out their regular road shoes, since right now all I have are their trail runners, because I absolutely am loving these. And once again, zero issues with the zero drop, even after another 8 miles in them.
I have the Altra Torin 2.0s for road shoes. They are super comfy and did a great job in my marathon. I do want to try the Ones though as my next pair. They are a little less cushiony and lighter. I'm also loving my Altra trail shoes. I think the calf pain I experienced during my 1st run with them was from 3 or 4 days of trail running in a row when I'd been primarily running on flat paved areas since August of last year.2 -
I had a rest day today after yesterday's long run on hilly tough terrain. I'm still thinking about signing up for that 10K next Sat. to use as a training run for the more challenging 12K on 4/1. However, my left knee is really hurting today. I'm in pain trying to go up and down stairs. Took some ibuprofen, hope to feel better tomorrow, and hoping it goes away quickly.1

Wind gusts on my run! Each time there was a huge gust I would think "I'm glad I'm not on my bike!"
Tomorrow it is supposed to be really cold (for Florida I mean) - 40 in the morning. Going to try the 10K Solar Run.
This is a website "for women over 50"... but I think it would be good for any age and it isn't that hard. It's basically push ups, planks and lunges/squats. That's what I always do + a lot more.

@ddmom0811 40 in Florida?? I think we had better weather in the mountains of Colorado!! Monday was cold...around 30 and cloudy, but Tuesday was in the 40s and Wednesday was in the 50s! We stopped skiing about 30 minutes before the lifts closed because the snow was so slushy towards the base, our skis were sticking and I didn't want to have a wipeout.1 -

@_nikkiwolf_ no it's my 3rd and only had 4 weeks to prepare it, so I'll have prob 2 days tapering. I don't like to follow any regular training, so I'll do what i think i can do. If I'm wrong I'll notice it.
Rest days are so boring, but had to take 1. Now.going to have lots of fun at the supermarket2 -
@HonuNui - As much as I loved my first race experience I must admit I am a bit jealous about the drummers! Congrats on a fab race.
@_nikkiwolf_ When I first looked at results it seemed that all the times were out by the same margin, as if the internal clocks weren't synchronised especially as the overall times, (i.e gun start - chip finish), seemed to be correct which I guess could happen as start and finish were in different places. Just pleased they sorted it same day otherwise I'd be going crazy by now.
Also, as I've said to you I was very impressed by your 32k, but knowing it came the day after a gruelling 16k makes it doubly impressive - well done!
As for me, I was having interesting time with stairs this morning. I went for an easy 15-minute jog/stumble, although that was mainly to act as a pre-stretch warm up rather than a run for its own sake. Whilst it was difficult, mentally I was OK as I treated all the creaks and pains as reminders of the great race I had yesterday and how all this training can actually pay off if I stick with it. It's certainly helped loosen everything up - quads still feel it coming down the stairs but generally OK and calf not too bad either.
On another note have been thinking about my training paces for marathon. I had been training on assumption of a 4:15 marathon, (already revised down from 4:30), but found I was consistently running faster than suggested ranges. Daniels now predicts a 3:52 but as the race will be first time I've covered that distance I think that's pretty unlikely. Have decided I'll adjust my training paces based on a 4:00 and see how that feels for now. Can't get my head around doing it under 4hours, but let's see how the next couple of months goes.

@BeeerRunner - yes it was a crazy weather week last week. But I cherish the little bit of cold we get.
@MobyCarp - That's so crazy that the traffic was so bad your friend got out, went to McDonalds and then got back to the car and you hadn't moved! Sounds like an exhausting trip -- but congrats on runs!
@_nikkiwolf_ - I have that same calendar and I had the worst bike ride I've ever had on Sunday. I looked at that again this morning when I flipped it to today and thought - I don't know how true that is for cycling. At least with running you can be alone and if it sucks, at least you can do your own pace. With group cycling there is such pressure sometimes.
@shanaber - glad your neighbor is okay and read she's back home (after you cleaned her house!) You are a dear friend/neighbor!
Cycling on the weekend: Saturday did a faster group (19-21 mph) and went 44 miles. We caught up to a faster group and for about 5 miles we went 22-24 - I don't know how I kept up. Then on Sunday, I went for a 40 mile ride at 18-20 mph. I did it the Sunday last week and it was great. But this weekend it was very windy and I just could NOT keep up with the group. Sometimes the people in the front going too fast so you have an excuse. But they were not going too fast yesterday, it was just me not being able to keep up. I was in such a bad mood afterward (at myself). But I finally let it go. I never look at Garmin's recovery hours after biking, but I decided after that performance, I needed to rest today.

The Daniels calculator predicted a much faster marathon time for me than what I could have done. It was spot on for my other race distances. It had me at 3:40:40 and I finished in 3:54:06, but I probably would have finished around 3:51:00 if I didn't trip and fall.
Cardiocascularly, I could have done the predicted pace no problem, but my legs weren't having it. However, I feel like the more longer runs I do, the more my legs will be up for the challenge of the longer distance, just like how 10 miles used to seem really long at one time.

@HonuNui it was certainly not in as nice a location as yours, you being in Hawaii, lol, and on a smaller scale, but at my first half marathon this past September, part of the Adirondack Distance Festival in NY state, we had drummers at the finish, welcoming us in. Apparently it's a tradition at this event!

I have been way behind in logging my miles. it was a busy Saturday as I was helping my neighbor and good friend pack up as he is moving his family down to Montgomery. Then fit my 18 miles in later in the afternoon, then watch a bunch of basketball. My Boilermakers made the Sweet 16.

Since I've struggled going 3 miles at a slow run pace (running the whole distance) without the effort being more than an easy run, I used my HRM today for my 3 mile easy effort run/walk. Worked perfectly! I guess I can't go by feel if I can't maintain a steady pace that matches the feel. Looking forward to when I have a steady easy run pace I can maintain over multiple miles again.

Thanks - that's pretty much what I'm expecting too. At least with my HM I had done the distance 5 or 6 times before I actually did the race (albeit *much* slower). That won't be the case with the full, so I'll definitely be more cautious with my race pacing just to try to make sure I finish. My 4:00 guide is simply to use to work out (using McMillan ranges) approximate paces for my different training runs, rather than an actual target for the race. As I said I can't get my head around actually doing 4h00 in the race - I'm still just hoping for a sub 4:30 finish!3 -

Someone goofed when they were making the signs for the pace groups. The 9:55 min/mile sign said it was for a 2:05 half marathon finish. I chose the pacer based on pace time, rather than finish, though - and they did a pretty good job, I think. I didn't manage to fight through the crowd at the starting line to start with them, though - I did manage to catch up in about a mile and a half. Then I cooled my heels for the next 7 miles or so, before I nearly tripped over one of the pacers when she stopped short to drink her gatorade. As long as I wound up a few steps ahead, I kept going a little faster (RunKeeper seems to indicate that the pace group must have dropped off a little bit, right about there, because my pace doesn't show any increase.) and started to catch up to the next runner ahead of me (and the next, and the next and oops, that was a pretty big hill - small walk break, and let's catch up to the next one, now!) for a finish time of 2:07:49. That's a shiny new PR, by over 20 minutes. I think I had a 2:05 half marathon in me, but maybe not a 2:00 - Next year should deliver that milestone. Fitbit's heart rate data seems to support that, but I don't rely too much on that. It looks pretty steady for the first half of the race, and then it gets a little bit spiky.
All-in-all I'm pretty happy with the race. The swag was a pint glass, finisher's medal, and a black 1/4 zip tech fabric long sleeve shirt. Chocolate coins in the pint glass were a nice touch. I could swear I read that there would be a beer at the finish line, but I couldn't find it, if it was there.

3/1 - Hate starting a month on a rest day.
3/2 - 5.0 miles.
3/3 - Grrr...overslept this morning and have commitments after work. No run. Unwanted rest day!
3/4 - 6.0 miles.
3/5 - 3.1 'mill miles, then upper body weights.
3/6 - Life got in the way. Had to get kids up and going early.
3/7 - WINDY 4.38 miles.
3/8 - 3.45 'mill miles, then upper body weights.
3/9 - 4.8 treadmill miles at Trek class.
3/10 - Unplanned rest day.
3/11 - 4 'mill miles.
3/12 - 7 windy miles. Longest run in 5 months. Plus, negative splits...woot!
3/13 - Another rest day. I am totally slacking.
3/14 - 5.1 treadmill miles at Trek class. Lots of speed/"hill" combo today.
3/15- 3.42 treadmill miles, then upper body weights.
3/16 - 5.05 treadmill miles at Trek class.
3/17 - Bodypump, then 2.25 treadmill miles.
3/18 - 7.3 mile group run.
3/19 - 4.05 hot miles.
3/20 - Rest day.

I can't top drummers (really cool!) but i recall three experiences that come close
1. Just past mid-way point of The Bear in Linville, NC, the race course is lined by throngs of Celtic warriors
2. The guy at mile 8 of 2010 Myrtle Beach marathon holding a box of Krispy Kremes yelling "I got your gu right here!" More people should be like that guy.

Last week I started climbing the stairs in our office. Our building is 6 floors, so 5 floor each trip up and down. The above totals are over 3 or 4 breaks. It feels great to get that extra workout in!
Unfortunately, it was a case of too much, too soon, when compounded with my back-to-back long runs on the weekend.
Saturday I ran 18 miles on very hilly trails. I had no pain other than general soreness. I could really feel the fatigue from all the stairs last week. I wanted 20 miles but ran out of time. I was encouraged, though, that I really didn't feel like I needed any more recovery than usual, which lately isn't very much.
Sunday was a different story. After all the vertical, I went for a long, flat road route for the second half of a back-to-back long runs. The run started out wonderfully...general soreness, but nothing acute. I called this a "recovery" run in my log, but that was mainly to remind myself to take it SLOW. I failed. I was pressed for time and took the first half as I normally do a long run. Around mile 11 I felt a sharp twinge of pain in my lower calf. Two more times it happened in the next two blocks. I considered calling my wife to come get me, but instead slowed my pace and shortened my stride. That helped quite a bit and I able to continue without any additional sharp pain.
The damage, however, is done I fear. I'm confident it's my calf muscle and not my Achilles, though, and am hoping/praying for a quick recovery.
With seven runs of 18 miles or more this training cycle, including five of 20 miles or more, I feel like I'm ready for my ultra now, calf notwithstanding. There are 6 weeks to go before the race, so I do have the time to recover. I was planning a 30 mile run Saturday but that of course is probably not going to happen.
Rest day today then I'll see how it goes for the rest of the week. Hopefully I can start running Tuesday, but at a reduced distance. We'll take it day to day. An no more stairs until this completely clears up.

In the Dallas Marathon, FC Dallas had a spectator viewing area complete with their awesome drummers (don't ever go to one of their games with a headache!) Lol
In the Cowtown, there was a group around mile 18 to 19 that was handing out cups of beer!! Lol! No, I didn't take one, but if it was a 5K or 10K, I might have.4 -

So, just found out that as well as it going extremely well, my HM effort yesterday has helped contribute to me winning a runningheroes.com prize! (Technically though I had already run the required distance during the week so may have won anyway)

@dkabambe you're not kidding about the lack of beer. It was a good race. My pace graphs never used to look so smooth, either - that's why I was looking to shadow a pacer. Looking closer, I guess I did speed up *some* when I left the pace group behind. But I think the work that I've done on my running playlist (finally went ahead and bumped everything up to 180 bpm) and steady runs on the treadmill have really helped me to keep consistent.
Congratulations to you, too, on your excellent first Half Marathon. Did they ever get the official times straightened out?2
