Speaking of Good runs, best part of my run today was this conversation:
Other guy: Western States is a bucket list race for me.
Me: Yeah, me too, it would be awesome
OG: but Badwater is out of the question.
Me: yeah, that's too crazy, even for me.
Nice to meet up with someone who has my same mania.
I looked it up, read 54 degrees Celsius and said hell no. Canadian girl would die lol2 -

@MNLittleFinn regarding Badwater- I listened to Bart Yasso talk a few years ago and he mentioned Badwater. That's a monster. You never know where running will take you, so who knows if some day you'll find yourself at that starting line.
If I remember right, they are selective and limited on runners permitted to participate. I think even Bart knew someone that got him in.0 -
Hi guys. Sorry for not checking in earlier. I hate coming in here on my phone. I'm just now getting on the laptop in my hotel room.
Yeah. Horrible weather. 90 minute delay to the start due to thunderstorms in the area. Then they decided to start. It got very warm very fast and the humidity was bad. The funny thing, I felt great the first few miles and was on pace. Then I could feel the weather getting to me around mile 5. I started to get that dizzy feeling and feeling my heart rate go up, so I slowed it down. It just kept getting worse after that. Towards the second half of the race when they were giving out water and powerade, I just ran to the table and took the 12 oz bottles. The sprinklers felt great too. Not a good day performance wise. In fact, the worst of my 4 performances. It was a nice course and well organized. I just wished they started on time. Cause there was a cold front going through. This weather behind the front was horrible. TV said high of 87 today.
I did enjoy the day despite a disappointing race. I got to run through Churchill Downs and Iroquois Park had a few rolling hills. But the course itself had a better profile than what I am used to at RCM. Lot's of people and great support. I did a lot of walking after the race too. I'm not sure how I was able to do it. lol I had to go down to 4th Street to pick up this souvenir..
Here's a photo after I was done.

Thank you sir.0 -
@Stoshew71 congratulations on finishing the race in those weather conditions. Sounds tough, but I'm glad you enjoyed the day anyway. Cool medal and awesome souvenir, too!1
-
@Stoshew71 Congrats on your race; sounded like an extra tough one, so all the more kudos and respect to you for completing it. A well earned medal backed up with a fantastic-looking souvenir to boot!1
-
@Stoshew71 Awwww...you did great! Did you have to avoid large puddles of water? I wasn't able to track (computer woes), but at the start,I saw large puddles of water. Very surprised about the heat and humidity. We have been getting lots of rain, but cool here. Super inspiring that you toughed it out!1

So today I planned my long run (14 miles). At first I thought that I was going to have to go to the gym and use the treadmill. A thunderstorm was supposed to be going through Indy at 3 p.m. At 3:20, noted no thunderstorms. So I decided to run on the Monon until it rained or until I completed the 14 miles. I was okay with running less miles (better to run too few than too many), but this was going to be my last long run before my half next Saturday.
I planned to run the first 6 at heart rate in the 80-85% range and then pick up the pace afterward, and hopefully sprint the last mile. After the first 6 miles, I usually start getting tired, but this time I took a page from Trump, and told myself that it was the greatest pre half long run on the planet (lol)....actually this worked for a while. Obviously running long distances is clearly mental. Toward the end of the run, legs really felt stiff. My 13.1 time equaled the time that I ran last year in this event, and I still had enough left in the tank to sprint (somewhat) the last mile. You know that it helps to keep an exercise diary. One year ago, I could not complete more than 10 miles a week and a half before my event.
Also saw a raccoon ( I never see wildlife on my runs) at about 9.5 miles into it. It saw me and changed its mind on crossing the path. Wow...it is a large animal and beautiful.
My Kentucky Derby pick this year...Always Dreaming. He is peaking at the right time and has been a handful at Churchill Downs....full of run. Second and third choice....McKraken and Hence (my closer). 20 horses in this race...very difficult to pick a winner this time.
4/29...14 miles
4/28....6 miles (running in a light drizzle)
4/19...12 miles
4/18...4 miles
4/17...8 miles
4/14....8 miles
4/12....4.36 miles (treadmill)
4/9....10 miles
4/8....8 miles
4/2....9 miles
Total ....83.36 miles
goal...50 miles
Indianapolis Mini Marathon (Half Marathon)....May 6
Geist Reservoir Half...May 20
Indy Women's Half Marathon....September 30 (tentative)

@Stoshew71 -Congratulations! great job running and adjusting your race for bad conditions.1
-
@Stoshew71 Great Job Good sir in the Heat/Humidity. Best of all that is some nice bling - especially the Golden Amber Liquid.1

Got in 5 windy miles this morning before heading to San Diego for the Agility trial. I can't post all my miles update but I am up to 115.77. Hoping to get in a few in the morning and then take Monday as a rest day. I will get close to my goal even if I don't quite hit it. With the dog show this week I don't know how much running we will get in for the first week of May - hopefully some!

01/04 - 8 mile
02/04 - 4.2 mile (34:01), followed with 3 mile Interval, Chest, Triceps & Core

04/04 - 7.7 mile run - Dreieich Day 1- 3 days running the same route
05/04 - 3.3 mile midweek run, followed with Shoulders Biceps and Core workout
06/04 - 7.7 mile run, not the most inspired, as it took a while to get into the rhythm
07/04 - 3 mile Interval, Back & Core
08/04 - sort of day off - only a 4.2 mile run after watching F1
09/04 - post-F1 8 mile run, cut short by shopping delivery (was supposed to be 10 miler)
10/04 - 4 mile Interval, Chest & triceps supersets, followed with Core
11/04 - 3.2 mile fast(er) run @24:05, followed with 2 mile Interval, Shoulders & Core
12/04 - 8 miler, which was tougher than expected, speed and elevation changes
13/04 - Headache-enforced rest day, charging up for Easter
14/04 - 4.25 mile Increased pace, followed with 2mile Interval, Biceps & Triceps supersets
15/04 - 3.4mile steady run, followed with 5K row, and 2 mile Interval & Core
16/04 - 13.16 miles - Easter Bunny support run
bowel-cramp enhanced final leg of the Easter Bunny run, needed 2 "different movement" breaks, totaling 5 minutes, during which I left my watch running, and still finished just under 2 hrs, so my target should be possible even if *kitten* hits the fan
17/04 - 2 mile Interval, Back & Core
18/04 - Caveman special - 3mile Interval, Chest & Triceps supersets, followed with Core
19/04 - 6.4 mile killer run - included me swearing a lot at my TM, which was not very impressed, followed with Interval & Core
20/04 - 4.2 mile run (Taper #2) followed with 2 mile Interval & Shoulders
21/04 - Caveman special - 3.2mile Interval, Biceps/Triceps Superset & Core
22/04 - 6.2mile Taper run #3 (avg 8:16, which is too fast (again)), followed with 2 mile Interval, Legs & Core
23/04 - 6.2mile Taper #4 (@8:35min/pm - much better pace, not certain if it was the lack of music or different shoes), followed with Interval & Shoulders supersets
24/04 - 3 mile Interval, Arms & Core
25/04 - 5.3 mile super-paced run, forgot phone-belt, so no music, no timing-update, just relaxed pace, felt I could go all day
26/04 - 6.5 mile Taper run #6 - Easy pace - They must have forgotten to pay the heating bill over here, as it was not very warm
27/04 - 6.2 mile Taper run #7 - Hope this will not be as it will go on Monday, as then I will be toast - run was difficult from the start, so to not give in I speeded up as well, stupid I will remain
28/04 - Caveman special - 3.2 mile Interval, Back & Core - ah, velly nice to throw around the weights again
29/04 - 4 mile run - avg pace 8:22, which again is too fast - Found out they have pacers on Monday as well, so now wondering if I should go with the 2hr pacer or the 1:55hr pacer ... decisions decisions
- Followed up with Interval & Shoulders workout
30/04 - T-1 - Non-cardio day - Caveman special - 3.3mile Interval, Arms superset & Core workout

Nominal Mileage goal: 191 miles.
Today's notes: Got the last 5 miles in this morning, to close out training for April. Ran my miles in 47:34, for an average pace of 9:30, Average HR was a bit high for recovery effort, at 151, but still in E range, so I'm OK with that. Tomorrow starts my biggest mileage month ever, so, I'm a little excited anxious about that!

Way to adjust and finish the race @Stoshew71! Considering how you felt I suspect many others would have dropped out. I see they had some very nice incentive to keep the runners going in that bottle though!
Great progress @ereck44! It is nice to keep logs like that to look back on and compare.
Good luck at the dog show @shanaber!
Looking forward to your upcoming monster mileage month @MNLittleFinn! My highest monthly mileage is 210 so I'm really excited for you as you're blasting into territory I can only imagine!3 -
@WhatMeRunning thanks! I'm kind of freaked out about it. Sure, it's "only" 20 miles more than this month, but it's kind of insane to me. If all goes well, I'll end up run long 100 miles MORE than I did last May..... Still can't believe I've come this far.3
-
Four miles at easy effort today.
I felt really good and was able to do longer stretches of running and even run up the tops of some of the hills making a great pace. Particularly since it is the day after a long run on the most brutal 12 mile route I was able to design (on road that is).
This is just the kind of sign I was looking for that these last 3 weeks of nothing but hills to finish off the 6 week increaed mileage base building cycle truly hit the intended mark. Of course I still have 4 more runs this week, but I should see similar results on those as the hardest part is already done.
I am probably going to lose my mind during the down week starting next weekend.
Oh, look at that! April is done! I killed my target, but really only because I changed my training plan mid-month which upped my mileage. I don't think that sort of change will happen next month as I have myself dialed in pretty good right now. I admit I am pretty shocked at how things have progressed from the start of last month to the end of this month. I never would have thought it possible. But I'll take it.

@Stoshew71- Sorry the weather threw a curve ball at you this weekend. Everyone I know who ran Louisville and Nashville finished about an hour off pace. Heat after rain is just brutal because the humidity just hangs on you. Way to tough it out! And that souvenir is awesome. If my husband sees that, he will want me to run that race next year!1
-
@Stoshew71 Congrats on your race, and what an awesome souvenir. I want one.1
-
Congrats @Stoshew71. Way to persevere.1

Eleven miles this morning. A storm brought a cold front through overnight so it was a fabulous 56 degree with sun and a little wind - Just Perfect!
I am a little concerned about my ankle. It was fine while I was running. After the run, however, the back/outside of my ankle was really sore. My Achilles tendon? I iced it for a while - hope it is nothing...
April Goal = 100 miles / Miles ran = 1363 -
Sorry this is long.
Goals for Football Hall of Fame 5k (first of a 4 race football themed series) :
1. Stay healthy and injury (don't do anything stupid)
2. Stay relaxed in the crowd (no panic attacks)
3. Have fun (I do this because I enjoy running)
My 5k was good. Weather was nice and cool on the drive down to Canton, Ohio with no rain and a comfortable temperature. When I got there, I discovered I was at the wrong school for packet pick up (not the only person who did this) but luckily the correct location was only 2 miles away and I was crazy early. Found a close parking spot on the street, also lucky I am good at parallel parking, and went in to grab my packet when it started to rain a little. I stored what I didn't need in my car, did some stretching and it stopped raining (Yeah!). Warm up was nice and easy but it was starting to get a little humid and realized I had no idea what the course was so I reviewed a bit of it and knew I would have PLENTY of people in from of me so I wouldn't get lost unless we all did. There were 910 people signed up for the race so not a huge crowd by any means. I started to get nervous at the line up for the stating line until I heard the people next to me. I looked over and it was an older lady with a walker asking her daughter if it was OK that they were in the race and walking it. Just the wake up call I needed to settle myself down.
Started good, was able to start running as soon as I crossed the starting line and kept up the pace I wanted. First mile was almost all down hill, concentrated on proper form, not braking and not going to fast which I was able to do. Second mile was a little harder as it started to rain and needed more walking then what I had planned on since the humidity was starting to effect me. There were no mile markers and I didn't have a my Garmin on so I couldn't track where I was on the course, it was mostly flat and then the last portion of it was uphill. Remember that first mile that was downhill well... Mile 3 was ALL uphill, which was actually nice. I focused on the ground a few feet in front of me not the top of hill and was able to run most of the uphill portions with walk breaks on the shorter flat parts. A wonderful lady, who I thanked later, had finished her race and came back and was cheering us on, encouraging us and running with us. She helped me thru the last mile and to the finish line. Bill Rodgers was at the finish line and everyone got a high five from him along with out medals, kind of gross for him but fun for us. It was a fun experience overall and I did accomplish all of my race goals. My time was not the fastest I have done, but not the slowest either. There are 3 more races to come in the series, another 5k in Sept, a 10K in Nov and a 5 miler in Feb and I am looking forward to them.
Oh yea, and the older lady with the walker and her daughter, I was still at race and was able to cheer her on and across the finish line with a few other people and the police who were sweeping the course. It was a very cool moment and something I will remember for quite a while.6 -
@iofred - good luck with the HM tomorrow!
@Stoshew71 - Congrats on a great marathon in terrible conditions. The humidity - ugh! It is just brutal. And you can never tell. Some years that race may have been perfect weather. One never knows.
Another month a little under goal. I'm okay with it, it was a great month in any case.

9 sweaty miles in high humidity this morning. I've had some busy weekends recently and really need to catch up on sleep, so I wasn't planning on setting an alarm for this morning but I changed my mind when I saw it was supposed to be 83 by 11am. It was still incredibly humid and the pollen count was pretty high, so those things gave me some trouble but, for the most part, I felt pretty good most of the run. I made sure to keep my pace at a manageable 9:40-9:50 to avoid burnout but I did also have to stop and stretch a few times. The last two miles I was pretty zapped of energy as I was starting to get pretty hungry and the temps started to rapidly rise. I ran fasted today but have never run long distances fasted before, so my body is still getting used to it. I did bring some nuun with me for hydration and I'm glad I did at least that. Since I've run this morning, I've felt some more twinges in my right lower leg (where I had my stress injury) than I usually do and a few resemble pain. I have 5 miles scheduled for tomorrow and a rest or cross-train day on Tuesday and was already thinking of swapping them, so that's what I'll do. I'll reassess after the rest day tomorrow and see if a shorter run on Tuesday feels do-able. Ever since I've seen some improvement in my gait and I've been done with PT, I've been a little more lax with keeping up with the exercises, so those really need to be my priority because I don't want this injury coming back.
Edited because I forgot to update my miles.2 -
@Stoshew71 Sorry the weather so greatly affected your marathon, but you still did incredibly well given the circumstances. Hopefully you will get the race your were hoping for next time. Very cool souvenir too!
@kimlight2 Congrats on a great race! Sounds like you had a great time and I'm glad the rain held off for you.2 -

Light rain, 48 degrees. Perfect running weather, as far as I'm concerned. Tried to run easy for the first couple of miles, managed 10:08, 10:02 - decided to go a little faster, 9:30, 9:47 (stopped to tie my shoe, and no auto-pause for me.) Still feeling good? Oh, yeah. 9:26... What's left in the tank? 9:00. Dude. All right. But so much for easy. Enjoyed it, anyway. Ended the month 11.5 miles short of goal. Will try again for May.5
