@garygse yeah, the marathon training over the summer months, ugh, I'm not exactly looking forward to it, lol. I just keep telling myself it'll make me faster, after all, that's why I trained outside all last summer! I think one of the characteristics of many runners is some leaning towards masochistic tendencies1

I posted this here once before, in a previous month's thread, and figured I'd share it one more time, just in case, as the race is getting close! This is the one big fundraising effort I do each year, my 3rd year in a row now, when I participate in the Run for the Wild 5k through the Bronx Zoo, to support the Wildlife Conservation Society. I know a few you here actually donated, which believe me, I didn't even really expect, and it meant a lot to me, you guys are awesome!
In case anyone else happens to be a big wildlife fan, this is the link to my fundraising page. This year I'm running for cheetahs, cause cheetahs are freaking awesome. Lol. Otherwise, feel free to just disregard this post!
Also, if anyone here is in the NY/NJ metro area I highly recommend this race, it's super fun, and you get to literally run through the Bronx Zoo and past the animals!
Thanks!

@girlinahat - May not be hardcore enough for you but this is the one I got talked into this afternoon if you fancy joining: http://www.beachyheadmarathon.co.uk/
EDIT: p.s. I'd still love to do London next year. Not for running reasons but for social reasons - think it's just be an amazing experience to run with those sorts of crowds/support - that's also why I want to do a marathon before then so that I know (all being well) that I can finish so when it comes to London I can just relax and soak up the atmosphere.
Ah, I'm not there yet but that sounds good. The south downs way is a fabulous place, but then I'm biased having partly grown up in Sussex (by the sea though)
I have my eye on a marathon for next year - the Giant's Head, because, hills. Oh, and it takes in the scenery of the Cerne Abbas giant, but mostly because the medal has a picture of him on it. With a spinning willy. Who DOESN'T want a medal with a spinning willy?5 -
6.7 last night. Coworkers found me a trail to run on so I didn't go running on the highway again.
Since I am trying this strava thing out.... I have one question. It is syncing over to my mfp feed as "running (jogging), in place." .... Now.... I know I am slow..... but I promise I AM MOVING. ... sooooo what do I have set up wrong?..4 -
@elise4270 I saw that too about the caveman - too funny0

I saw a dr. finally about this knee issue. I couldn't find a time to see my normal GP, so I scheduled with someone else. He was an older dr., apparently used to run as well (maybe still does... wasn't clear on that, nor does it change much). Looked at my knee and was able to identify a specific area (bursa?) that is causing the issue. We talked through the timeline of when it began and such. He guessed that I got new shoes around the end of Feb. I hadn't told him that, but he explained how he knew. I'm ditching these shoes (or at least not going to run in them). Lesson learned: The wrong shoes can be a costly mistake.
Long story short, we put together a plan to recover in time to complete the half marathon.9 -
6.7 last night. Coworkers found me a trail to run on so I didn't go running on the highway again.
Since I am trying this strava thing out.... I have one question. It is syncing over to my mfp feed as "running (jogging), in place." .... Now.... I know I am slow..... but I promise I AM MOVING. ... sooooo what do I have set up wrong?..I used to get questions all the time about "You really ran in place for 3 hours???".
For whatever reason, when MFP gets the run data from Strava (or any app) it tries to match it up against MFP's list of running paces. The slowest running pace you can log a run activity in MFP is 12:00/mile. If you go slower than that then it defaults to something else. In the case of Strava, MFP decides that "you ran in place". Even though your external app can send the right pace, number of calories, etc, MFP insists on finding the closest match pace in the MFP database using whatever logic MFP has settled upon.
Not that MFP ever fessed up to this. I posted in their help forum about this, others said they had the same issue, and the only messages I ever got from MFP were about asking me to verify settings. I did all they asked, but the issue remained. They have no plans to fix it, I guess.
The only way the issue went away was to sync from a different app than Strava. At the time I used both Endomondo and Strava so I switched to syncing MFP from Endomondo for a bit. But then I realized I kinda liked all of the puzzled inquiries about running in place for 3 hours so I switched back to Strava and "ran in place" again. Just to mess with people.
Since getting my Garmin watch though it is now my primary recording device and Garmin updates MFP with a minimum 12:00/mile (even if it was actually closer to 14:00/mile). MFP just doesn't believe people can run slower than 12:00 mile, or more accurately it can't acknowledge a pace slower than 12:00/mile. Take a look on my profile page at todays run. My actual pace was 14:09 (if I recall correctly) yet on my MFP entry it shows the correct calorie burn, the correct number of minutes, but says I ran at 12:00/mile. The only variable out of whack is the pace, even when fed by Garmin.
The problem is MFP, not Strava. Yet MFP does pick on Strava as the ONLY app that says "running in place" while the others just say "12:00/mile". Probably because it is a competitor to Endomondo and MapMyRun which are all owned by MFP's parent UnderArmour. At least that is my theory.6 -

Does anybody have experience wearing Mizuno Wave Inspire 12s? I've always worn more neutral shoes, but I think it would be a good idea to work a stability shoe into my rotation due to the pronation pointed out by my PT. I was searching around for a reasonably priced shoe and stumbled upon a great $30 deal. I think at that price, I'll take a chance but wasn't sure if I should order a wide for more room in the toe box or if the toe box is already roomy enough for a regular width shoe (the 12s are last year's model, so I don't think I can try them on in a store).
@greenolivetree Glad your close encounter with the geese didn't ruin running for you lol...I get SO nervous when a goose is too close to my path as I've been chased by them before. I usually go wayyyyy out of my way to avoid them
@kgirlhart Happy birthday!
@WhatMeRunning Weather isn't looking favorable in central Illinois for my race on Saturday either. Keeping fingers crossed the forecast changes for both of us!
@7lenny7 Of COURSE the cops would pull up right at that moment lol. That situation could have turned out a little worse, but I'm sure it still raised your HR a little haha.

@WhatMeRunning that actually makes sense! I had to think about it for a minute, because I knew I had done some shorter runs that were less than the 12min/mile - but those days also had longer runs or walks that it apparently decided trumped the other, so it still had running in place as the tag. Map my run used to post a pace, but lately it had just decided I was "running" - end of story. Maybe it was trying not to embarrass me.1

I did get my run in today! It kind of surprises me how happy that makes me. Luckily my parents stopped by early and I still had time to go run before dinner.

Travel day today. Felt like an old man this morning. No way could I go down the stairs to the T with luggage, so I took the handicapped elevator. Then it was a challenge to get down the 3 steps to change trains, with bags. Fortunately, someone who looks old and is wearing a Boston Celebration jacket the day after Marathon Monday scores really high points on the "should I stand up and give this person my seat" scale on the T. I wasn't too proud to decline such offers.
Got through the airport, saw a lot of other people who had difficulty sitting down or getting up, got home. The cat is noisy. She thinks I've neglected her. Going down the stairs to put running clothes in the laundry was possible, but still a reminder that I ran a lot of downhill yesterday. Coming back up the stairs was no big deal.
Podiatrist visit tomorrow. He may be surprised that I lost no toenails at Boston or in Boston training this year. Boston, the documentary movie tomorrow evening. And maybe Thursday I can think about a 2 mile recovery run.

You guys do hill training, I must do wind training. I am avoiding doing my training on a treadmill so I'm just Learning how to cope with my asthma. Plus I'd miss out on this gorgeous scenery and sunsets. (Hope the pictures work).
Side note: I was chased by geese when I was little so I'm still freaked out by them. I run way off the trail to avoid any group of birds haha10 -
@hesfeld Great photos! I've gone through much bigger flocks of Canadian geese... I don't slow down or stop for them, but I have seen flocks in the hundreds running away and ultimately taking off. It's somewhat majestic.1
