No run for me today, I hit the gym for some weight training. Hope everyone had a good run today!4

@BettyM1017 64oz is the goal because I normally drink less! That's the floor of what I'm trying to drink, I told myself I need to drink at least that much, I might be closer to a gallon a day, with the humidity and all. Nuun is an electrolyte supplement.1

Hey @BettyM1017 and anyone else wondering what nuun is:

Some folks like it (I do), some don't. I find it's very convenient with the summer heat.1 -
Wk 13, Day 3 of my 10k trainer today. Ran 2 30-minute segments for a total of 5.35 miles (11:14 pace). I ran early today and it felt really good. I'm not usually someone who likes early morning workouts but this running business may convert me, especially with summer coming on.
MTD: 13.81 / 506 -

I like Nuun, especially on hot summer runs because it doesn't give me any stomach issues that I sometimes get from Gatorade. I drink Nuun pre-marathon too, like @MNLittleFinn , but I alternate it with Gatorade because Gatorade gives you carbs and Nuun doesn't.3 -

Huh, I had the opposite reaction to Nuun. I can handle Gatorade but Nuun tore my stomach to shreds!0 -
We talked about this last month how Cipro can cause tendon tears. Andrew, whose blog this is, is a friend of mine and a PT.

I like Nuun because it is [relatively] low carb. It seems to have gotten worse over time, though... I used to be able to find them with 1g net carbs. Now, all the flavors seem to have minimum 3g net carbs. Since I eat low carb, I need more electrolytes than normal anyway. Nuun tablets are a convenient way to deliver those electrolytes... especially when it is impractical to carry a jar of pickles / pickle juice around.1

Oh my goodness! I haven't been able to log in since the 1st and there are 478 messages!
Just finished the AP grading for comp sci in Kansas City. We were SO lucky to finish at lunch time. The poor AP Calc graders had to work extra hours yesterday and today and will be there late tonight. Where as the comp sci teachers get to go do something -- like maybe rent a bike!
I ran all week with another Comp Sci teacher and a new AP Physics teacher. We had such fun! Ran 7 days in a row. They were my speed and we all had similar stories. So fun!!!
Rest day tomorrow!
6/1- travel day
6/2 - 5 miles
6/3- 4.6 miles
6/4- 4.2 miles + 18 miles cycling on rented bike
6/5- 5 miles
6/6 - 5.5 miles
6/7 - 6.1 miles
6/8 - 5.4 miles
6/9 - travel day

June goal: 50 miles
6/1/17: 3.5 miles
6/2/17: 1 mile
6/4/17: 4.3 miles
6/5/17: 2 miles
6/6/17: 3.4 miles
6/7/17: 2.4 miles
6/8/17: 2.7 miled
19.3/50 miles
I ran at lunchtime again. It worked out really well. I didn't have as good a pace as yesterday, but it was already hotter and it was more humid today. I may start running 3 days at lunch and one longer run on Sunday instead of my usual Sunday, Tues, Thurs runs. I don't have time to run as many miles at lunch as I do in the evening, but I think if I add an extra day I can keep my mileage where I want it. I hope everyone is having a great day!
@RespectTheKitty I hate to hear about your fall. Feel better soon! Hugs.

@girlinahat - Good job restarting Stronglifts - I have let that go by the wayside and am trying to get someone in my family to restart it with me. I find it hard to self motivate to lift weights.
@RespectTheKitty - So impressed that you just got up and kept going! I highly suspect I would have gotten up and headed back at that point.
@ddmom0811 - So the AP tests will be back soon? My son took Gov, Language, Seminar and World History AP tests this year. Bet you are glad to have that done and get back to enjoying the summer.0 -
Well it is official, I've ordered a Fenix 5. I figured it can do anything I might even consider trying (although I really just lift and run) so I might as well go all out and spend the extra. Thanks for all the tips, now to cut the cord on my phone dependency....although I probably still carry it for Zombies, Run!9

Awesome! That's one of the watches I'm looking at because I want to upgrade from my forerunner 2300 -
And.... Another Question for all you more experienced than me marathoners... so basically everyone who's run one. Here'd the background: My goodie bag at packet pick up will also be my gear bag. For both the Half Marathon's I ran, I didn't use one, first because it was an out and back and my family was at the finish, and for the second because I really didn't think of it.
This time around, with a P2P marathon, where I'm actually staying closer to the start, I was thinking it would be good to have a bag set for me at the end. I was thinking a change of clothes (shirt, shorts, my sandals maybe) but that's as far as I got.
So, my question is, Do you make use of having a gear bag brought to the finish line? If so, what did you have in yours?
Thanks!0 -
Wow, just got caught up for today!
I decided to skip this morning's run to keep an eye on a glute that felt a bit off this morning but it's been alright since. I'll just shift my rest day from tomorrow to today and run today's run tomorrow.
Congrats to everyone who ran, I saw a PR posted, a fall that was conquered, tons o mileage, and I know I'm forgetting something, but congrats!4 -
@Azercord I carry my phone both so that I can get updates from Sam andto listen to music in between mission updates. Plus, I see it as a safety precaution... in case of emergency, if I am in a place with service, I can summon help.0

June Running Totals (miles)
6/1 – 8.25 warm up, speed work, cool down
6/2 – rest day
6/3 – 12.18 solo + group run
6/4 – 7.21 easy with fast finish
6/5 – 7.07 easy
6/6 – 11.05 warm up, speed work, cool down
6/7 – 7.38 group run
6/8 – 5.33 warm up, easy speed work, cool down
June total to date – 58.47
Nominal Challenge Goal – 230 miles
Real Goals: Stay healthy. Train toward Rochester Marathon. Run McMullen Mile in under 5:50 on June 9. Run Medved 5K to Cure ALS in under 20:00 on June 18.
Today's notes – When I got to club practice this evening, it was 75º F (24º C) with minimal wind, but the humidity wasn't bad and there was a promise of slightly falling temperature. Ran my 2 mile warm up and came back to look at the board.
My marathon training assignment for today was 1x800 at T, 2x1600 at T, 1x800 at T, and 2 laps stride the straights. I never seriously considered doing that. The McMullen Mile workout on the board was Easy + 4x100m strides. Talked to coach, and he emphasized keeping it easy, visualizing what I want to do tomorrow, and maybe running a 200 at goal race pace to see what it feels like.
So I ran 3 and a half laps easy, ran the hard 200, around most of the next lap easy, then 4x100m strides and a lap of easy to push the workout proper over 2 miles. Didn't feel like I'd run at all, and I was working weekly mileage totals in my head; so I went out for a short cool down run, a bit over a mile. Around a half mile of that was running in the woods where a path had been cleared for the college cross country team. That was pretty, and interesting, and not particularly hard if I let myself do it easy instead of like a cross country race.
Oh, yeah. That hard 200m came in at 38.3 seconds. Hmm. I don't think I can hold that pace for a mile, even on a track in perfect weather. But we'll see what tomorrow brings. I'm reasonably confident that I can beat my 5:50 time from 2 years ago. I think beating 5:30 is an unattainable fantasy. Just have to go out tomorrow evening and see what I can do.

@MNLittleFinn - For Boston, I ran in a singlet and shorts. My drop bag had warm up pants, my race shirt, and my Boston Celebration jacket. I wanted to dress more warmly after I stopped running. In the changing tent, I saw a guy changing into dry underwear; I wasn't that smart. Maybe next year.
A lot depends on the weather and how much space you have in the drop bag. It would have been nice to have dry socks and shoes, but space prevented that. (Actually, I packed spare socks but it was too much effort to take off my shoes to change socks.)
You just have to do the best you can with what you know when you have to pack the bag. If you want something specific in the way of food or drink that you don't expect the race to provide, pack that.3 -
@RespectTheKitty The face plant/scuffed knee is a right of passage among runners. Congratulations. It's a badge. Wear it proudly.5

June 7 - rest day
June 8 - 4.5 mile run at steady pace and later 1 mile at near max effort for total of 5.5 miles.
June totals - 20.9/50
Temp this afternoon was 75 with low humidity. Unheard of for June in North Carolina. I definitely enjoyed this day for running because weather like this will probably not return until the fall. Happy trails to all.5 -

Well I did it. I ran a half marathon.
I'm not a breakfast eater, but I ate a granola bar mid morning. I attended a training class that provided lunch from Panera. I ate a sandwich, a bag of chips, a few bites of salad and a few chunks of melon. I didn't want to feel full knowing I was going to run when I got home. I did try to drink a lot - 2 cups of unsweetened tea, a cup of weak coffee, and some water.
I got home and headed out the door at 4pm. I had a lot of nervous energy and ran the first few miles a bit faster than I should have. The weather was 65 and breezy. Unfortunately, I ran the distance into the wind, but I would rather wind than heat! I felt pretty good until mile 9 where my pace slowed to just over 10min/mi. At that point I was just telling myself to keep running no matter how slow it was. My friend met up with me and ran the last half mile with me. That helped way more than I thought it would!
I felt pretty good when I was done. I walked about a mile to cool down and my husband picked me up. By the time we got home my stomach was hurting - I felt like I was going to puke and/or pass out! It's been about 2 hours and I'm still feeling weird. Can't eat and forcing myself to sip water and Gatorade, but it's making me feel nauseous.
My husband thinks I did great for just doing it sort of off the cuff. He thinks I need to experiment with fueling more during my long runs. The poor guy had to help me into the house and into the shower when I kept wanting to stop and lay down or else puke on his shoes.
I did 2 12 milers during training without fueling other than Gatorade and didn't have any stomach issues. Then again those were in the mornings prior to eating anything. So I'm assuming my issues are from having food in my system.
Still so much to learn...
I'm glad to have done it even though I didn't run it in 2 hours. Maybe next time.10 -
@zdyb23456 you did great considering head wind, I think maybe you were under fueled or maybe not hydrated enough coffee and tea aren't great for hydration. Did you drink anything during the run? I'd be proud of 2:06 considering everything. Great job!

Thanks! It's my longest run.
I did carry a hand held 12 ounce water bottle that had Gatorade in it. I start to sip it after about 5/6 miles. I had a little bit left when I finished. I tend to feel like I'm rationing it in fear of running out before I'm done. I know I need a bigger bottle or consider a hydration belt or vest. Virginia gets hot and muggy, 12 ounces just won't be enough.1 -

@zdyb23456 - Congratulations on your first half marathon!! You have run further than the vast majority will ever even attempt! A half marathon is a seriously respectable distance, and it is hard on everyone that first time.
It sounds like you are dehydrated. You might also have an electrolyte imbalance, but look at hydration first, especially since Gatorade isn't helping you feel better (your electrolyte to water ratio could be high). Tea is a minor diuretic (as is coffee), you actually lose a little more water than you take in. Normally this is not anything that would affect you, but running a half marathon is nowhere near a normal daily routine. So most likely between the sweating and your body otherwise eliminating a bit more water with the tea and coffee, you're a bit low on hydration. Stick to water for the rest of the day, and get lots of it.3 -
Well, I woke up after about only 5 hours of nice, deep sleep. I am very much awake, feel fully rested and ready to get the day underway, but it's still before 3am.
I am about to head out to run. Part of me is saying I should take advantage of the extra time to do my long run now instead of tomorrow. It is currently 64° F and 82% humidity. We are forecasted to begin a week or so stretch of well above normal temperature weather starting tomorrow and the low tomorrow morning is expected to be 68°. Not much of a difference but if I wake up at a more normal time tomorrow to do a long run I will be running in warming weather, pushing well into the upper 70's with high humidity. Over the next 3 hours here the temp will stay steady, maybe even drop a degree or two. So it is more like a 10 to 15 degrees difference when looking at the end of the runs between today and tomorrow.
After typing all that out... I'm a bit more inclined to do the long run now. We'll see what happens.4 -
