You can put them in a box of rice like they say to do with cell phones!

Like I have that much rice lying around.... :P

I'm Korean so I always have enough rice, I buy it 25 pounds at a time  Of course I would never waste that much rice to try and dry my shoes!

I have wasted a gallon of white vinegar to get the stink out of workout clothes. A long soak in straight vinegar is the only thing that works for me.

SOOOOOOO Do y'all remember all the fun I had with Strava in the June thread? Well finally got in touch with a "Matt" over there and they looked at the data coming over. For some reason, the data from the sync software is being edited in route. It has far fewer GPS points, 37 minutes worth of data points were lost (over a 2 hour run). The manual sync I do via a gpx file does not have this problem.

*sigh* so I guess this means no automagic sync for me. I will have to do the manual sync each time. Bah.

Yeah, that's one complaint that I've read about those shoes is that the wide width color choice is non-existent (not sure if it's the same for other shoes in their line-up or not, as I only ever get the Vomeros).

99 times out of 100, I end up leaving shoe stores with New Balance as they seem to be the only reasonable company on the market making wide width shoes.

    This!!!^^^^^
And I have to wear a men's wide. Forget trying to find woman's running shoes that fit!

So other than size numbers, is there any difference in how they make men vs women shoes? I mean with some clothing it makes sense as body proportions are different, but how different can feet be?

Like me. During this particular segment of my run.

Humility will set in on my next run when I expect it to feel this amazing again. :disappointed::smiley:

@zdyb23456 I'm non-asian and I also buy rice in 25 pound bags. No way I'd waste it on shoes lol!

Women's shoes tend to be quite a bit narrower in the heels and toes. I have never found a toe box on a women's shoe that didn't rub my poor toes raw. And I wear an 11 usually and it is very hard to find 1/2 size bigger in a wide without specialty ordering. When I look it up though, most of the docs on the interwebs says that womens running shoes are narrower in the heel and wider at the toes.

Today's notes: REST day today, an actual scheduled one! I REALLY wanted to run today but, in order to get back on schedule for training, I took the planned Monday rest day.... However, I didn't want to be totally lazy, so when I took my little guy to the park, I loaded up the reservoir for my vest, plus both 20 oz bottles and wore that for the walk to the park, the whole time there, and then the walk to the library and the store.... pack only added about 7 pounds, but I wanted to get used to wearing it fully loaded, since I probably will wear it like that when I make my 100k attempt in October.

Tomorrow is a scheduled 8 miles... I REALLY want to hit the trails, but with a 20 minute drive minimum each way, and a 0745 PT appointment 80 minutes away, I'll be running at home... looks like I'll be doing hill repeats,,, 12x a 1/4 mile little hill near home, plus mile run there and back... with vest and water reservoir.

Hope ya'all are having a Runderful day!

    2017 Races Scheduled

Beautiful weather today, so I had to run in the woods again.

Six miles total, wish I could have done more but my energy levels weren't the best. Still, it was a nice run for a stressful Monday.

The road rash on my knee that I acquired on that fall a little over a week ago is still giving me problems. It's taking forever to heal. But I consulted Dr. Google and apparently road rash on the knee is supposed to take a long time to heal because it's on an area that moves a lot, thus frequently re-opening the wound. And that's exactly what's happening. Still, I wish this crazy thing would just go away. It's starting to scare the neighbors.

    July total - 88.5 / 100

SHOE UPDATE: They are nearly dry, no rice required. I stuffed them with old wrapping paper, LOL.

I had to use my back-up pair for today's run, but the "good" pair should be ready to go by tomorrow.

It rained today while I ran. The shoes I ran in are parked in front of a fan. I expect they'll be dry by morning, but I'll move on to the next pair in rotation for tomorrow anyway.

    7/24 – 7.84 easy + 4 strides

July total to date – 227.24

Nominal Challenge Goal – 260 miles
Real Goals: Stay healthy. Train toward Rochester Marathon. Pace Shoreline Half as close as possible to a 1:40 finish with even splits. Run Karknocker 5K in under 20 minutes.

Today's notes – Today's assignment was a typical Monday in the marathon plan, easy plus 4 strides. I had penciled in 8 miles, but with yesterday's run coming in long I would be okay with today coming in a little short. Garmin says it was 72º F (22º C) with 73% relative humidity, but it was a bit of a weather story when I ran. I expected same old, same old reasonable temperature and humidity suckfest. What happened was a little different.

I waited till 6:30 PM to start, in the hopes of more shade or some overcast skies. I got the overcast skies. And a few drops of rain. Then a shower that started in earnest about 1.25 miles in. Oh, well. I know how to run in the rain. For the next mile or so, it was like I was running on the borderline of a weak cold front. I'd run through a patch of warm, humid air; then I'd run through a patch of cool shower. After a while, the patches of warm humid air went away and I was just running in a cool rain.

I thought about this for a while, and decided that rain when it's this warm is better running weather than the humidity I've run in for most of July. Then it got wetter, and I began to worry about my socks. Normally, I wear Darn Tough socks and I don't worry about puddles. For whatever random reason, today was the day I decided to test the free socks I got last April from a Strava challenge, where I had to show up at the Strava store in Boston to collect the socks:

    gzaszo4a5q53.jpg

They're pretty. I don't trust pretty. I want functional, and in my experience functional is frequently a casualty of creating something pretty. My feet got wet. I felt the squish of water on my toes. The socks are thinner than the Darn Tough socks. But, apparently they were good enough. I didn't get any blisters.

After about 4.6 miles, the showers let up, then became intermittent. I had periods of running in cool showers, then periods of running in warmer humidity. Yes, the showers are definitely better running weather.

Got back to my own street, ran my 4 long strides starting just after Garmin clicked over 7 miles. I'm supposed to work on some aspect of form while running strides. Today I worked on staying loose. I visualized holding a potato chip, just like folks here recommended. Didn't work to well. My imaginary potato chips got soggy. So on the 3rd and 4th strides, I just worked on not clenching my fists and keeping my arms loose.

I finished up in a light shower. I'm already wet, so I may as well do my stretching on my driveway. The shorts won't get any wetter if I sit on the wet asphalt for seated stretches.

Check the stats. Average pace, 7:46 (7:50 for the first 7 miles). Average HR, 124 (Zone 1). Max HR, 140 (top of Zone 2). Time in zones, 24% Zone 2 and 69% Zone 1. I could feel that I didn't have to work as hard today as the past few days running at a similar pace.

I still don't like having to mow the lawn every 3 to 5 days, but I'm beginning to see some benefits to having a lot of rain in July.

@PastorVincent and @seanevan10 - if you are looking for shoes with a wider toe box you might check out Altra and Topo. Both are known for having a more natural fit that allows your toes to splay out naturally. I have had some issues with the sizing of Altras to get the right size. Topos are a spinoff from Vibram and I love them. Actually my favorite is Skora (also wide toe box) but they have had some stock issues and don't expect to have more until this fall. I like the fit of all 3 of these better than my wide width New Balance.

Maybe the trucker just had some extra biscuits for whatever reason and decided to share them with the first dog he saw?

I did that recently when I changed my diet back to zero carb again... I had a bunch of nuts and peanut butter left over, so I gave a bag or bottle to homeless people as I saw them. I just gave out the last jar of peanut butter on Sat. (along with a couple of plastic spoons) to a homeless person and am down to only 1 bag of pecans for the next. When my cats die, I will probably give the leftover food to homeless kitties.

That's lovely. Great ideas there. Our world would be a different place if we all gave (even our leftovers) to those in need.

Not seen those brands in stores. I will have to keep an eye out for them. I have about 400 miles on my current shoes so probably should be thinking about new ones at some point. I really dislike shoe shopping though, so normally just re-order the last pair I got until they stop making them. The process starts a new.

My official time was almost 45 mins off my best time, ugh, I did not expect to come close to a PR but it was much worse than I expected. I am sure though that a good portion of it was the time spent waiting for the bathroom as well as walking some of the hills. There is one thing that confuses me though on the official time and this is the first time I have had it happen. I started my app well before the actual race start and stopped it well after the end and it still had me time a full 11 mins faster than the official time and my watch which was even faster because it pauses if I stop for longer than 30secs (app doesn't pause). Maybe someone can explain it? My husband did say that when he was watching me on the race app they were reporting problems with the times so maybe it was an issue on their end. It really doesn’t impact me in any way other than maybe my pride.

    Congrats on finishing despite conditions!

If your app does not auto-pause (are you sure? Strava, RunKeeper, and many others do. I turn this feature off) then I would assume what your app recorded was correct. I mean you likely have been using it a while now and should have a good idea if it is accurate right? If it is accurate, it is more sensible to trust the known tool than the unknown tool. IMO.

Also, do not forget there are TWO different times when you run at the non-competitive level. There is CHIP time and GUN time.

Gun time - how long it took you to finish the race based on the official start of the race. So if the race started at 7 am, and you finished at noon, your time is 5 hours.

Chip Time - how long it took you to make it from start to finish. So if the official start time was 7 am but you did not cross the start line until 7:45 am and finished at noon, then your chip time is 4 hours and 15 minutes.

Your watch and app measure CHIP TIME not GUN TIME.
