Hello lovely ladies! It has been a busy day. I slept in until 7am, due to the fact that it was raining when my alarm went off at 5:30. Was going to walk early to avoid the heat and humidity. Nope. I did walk when I got up, in the steam. I got my shopping done and came home and started to cook. Cooking this week for my family, my daycare, and my in-laws. I made italian sausage and ricotta stuffed manicotti, chicken fajitas with peppers and onions and wild rice, and a chicken club pasta salad. These meals I made enough for us and for in-laws. Then I prepped broccoli and greens for the week, pureed strawberry and portioned that for smoothies this week, made black bean burgers and lentil falafel patties for my vegan girl and froze those. Lastly, I portioned out six bags of veg for my "pound a day". Four hours of meal prep; but so worth it when I am so tired/tired of cooking during the week!
DD called me in tears, because she had just been in to see her OB/GYN and she has gained 20 pounds since Joaquin's birth. I kind of saw that coming, when she would tell me what she was eating daily/weekly, during her daily phone calls to me. It is a hard habit to break that mentality that you need to give in to cravings or babying/treating yourself when you are pregnant or a new mommy. I decided to be her "boot" and I called her and offered to be her accountability person if she will be mine. We will be talking tomorrow and comparing our meal/food prep notes. We will be measuring ourselves and weighing in on Monday mornings. She was always a headstrong, strongwilled, stubborn child. I am hoping that it still works for her. I think her biggest challenge is going to be sticking to smart choices while at the office, among all of the treats and snacks brought in and meeting at lunch twice a week with her ladies group. And she called me out on my slacking off and told me that she doesn't want to hear another "fat" comment about myself coming out of my own mouth. (I am good at lifting her and others up, I am not so kind to myself). So...this is the first time we have done a mother/daughter food plan. Here's hoping for success.
Heather - Entering my foods has been challenging. I noticed the items taking a long time to load, or our items/amounts we enter are taking a long time to appear. Very frustrating. I thought it was just some glitch in my own computer or internet connection.
Machka - What a beautiful area! If I had such stunning vistas at the top of every hill and at each bend, I would definitely bike more often! I hope the hills weren't too much for you!
Dana- Wow! Cool collection of artifacts! I am not a collector of anything (except maybe dust). My DH collects license plates. Not just ANY license plates. University of Notre Dame license plates. (exciting stuff, huh?) Yeah. They hang in the garage. His entire office is a little shrine to ND. I made him promise to keep it contained to that room. If it were something like your DH's collection, I would have that displayed some where. I love history.
Beth- Wowsa! What a week you have had! It sounds as if you are taking it all in stride, though. Your post is in high spirits and is making me laugh. Your thoughts on your funeral "They better miss me!" sounds like what goes on in my head. I would prefer to live well into my 100's; but sometimes I find myself thinking, "if I go first, God, please let me be a fly on the wall and watch my family try to do everything that I accomplish in a day/week."
Margaret- Frank Abagnale. lol I read the name and re read the name and thought "did she just say Frank Abagnale?" I bet he looks nothing like Leonardo DiCaprio!
About all of you shredders- Do you shop at Staples? I often get coupons on my receipt for free shredding (up to 2 pounds of paper). You don't have to have more than that, or purchase anything. You can go in with two pounds of paper and they will shred it for free. We don't take bank statements or personal things there; but we do take those pesky "offers" that you get in the mail and don't use. If you throw them in the trash, if your name and they give you a pre-approved account number is on it, it can be used by some one else under your name. We shred that kind of thing there.
Cheri and Karen- Woo-hoo another Women 50+ "meet up"! How exciting! Take pictures!
Becca- Very pretty rocks! Rock on sista!
Carol- Cute grand kids! We do some rock painting too! I just did a craft earlier this week with the kids. The each found eight rocks and painted four to look like lady bugs and four to look like bumble bees and when they dried we took them outside and I showed them how to use sticks, or chalk on the drive way to make a tic tac toe board and the bugs and bees were in place of the X's and O's! Fun stuff.
Thank you all for the concern about the daycare families and financial woes. It will all work out. It always does. I have talked to both families and let them know what was going on and that they need to get a hold of their case workers and "stay on" them to get things taken care of. IN the meantime; I told them that they need to begin making payments on what is owed. IF/when the state corrects the issues, I will be able to claim the hours unpaid and reimburse the families what is owed to them. The going rate for childcare in my area is about $150-$175/child/week. In Grand Rapids, which is about 25 miles away and a bigger city, the going rate is $180-$225/child/week! My niece just moved here from the Baltimore area and she was paying $200/week for her son's daycare and she had to pay for the provider's seven weeks off/year. I do have my families pay my vacation time also, but it is only four weeks/year. I am hoping to someday work "teacher's hours" (yes, I know teacher's work many hours outside of school, and I mean no disrespect in the way I put this) and have Christmas Break, Spring Break and summers off.
Anyway...I guess that is all for now. Sending love and hugs and big hoorays for those who need them! ttfn KJ (Kelly)5 -
Allie, does your brother know all that yOU do? You are one of the most selfless human I know.
When Charlie's Dad married his second wife, she was against about anything anyone could say. If I said this print is black, she would say it was something else. She wasn't liked by a lot of people. I did something good for his Dad's Boy Scout group one year and got n her good graces so I was OK. But their neighborhood for drainage purposes needed a ditch put on their street. She was very vocal against it. So when his Dad died she had him cremated and was going to throw his ashes in that ditch just to spite the neighbors. I didn't want that for my FIL so now I have half of his ashes. I hope when either Charlie or I are buried we can put this box in our vault with us. We loved him dearly. He was Charlies Karaoke buddy.
I am really tired and going to bed quite early, like real soon.

Well, so far I've cooked two meals in the Instant Pot and I liked both of them better the way I used to cook them. The first was honey garlic chicken thighs and the second was cabbage, onions, potatoes, and polish sausage. I used recipes I found on the internet. I need to try a roast and also just some plain pinto beans. If I don't like either of those, I'm going to give up. Oh, and cheesecake. I do want to try cheesecake! I've ordered a cookbook from Amazon. I do like the set and ignore part, but both dishes were lacking in flavor somehow.2

My word for 2017 is balance. After two days of dancing both in the morning and afternoon and being gone from the house most of the day, today was Jake's day and we did what he wanted to do. He had phone calls to make in the morning so I had time to walk the dogs and do some work in the yard. Today is our neighborhood's yearly yard sale so we walked around a bit and talked to neighbors. Since we are so focused on decluttering, it was easy to not buy anything. Jake wanted to visit a lavender farm and have lavender ice cream. So we went to a small cafe near our house for ice cream and had lunch, then ice cream. Then we went home and napped with the pets for two hours. After the nap we went to one lavender farm where Jake took a few pictures and we walked around for a few minutes and left. It took awhile for him to say that he wanted to go out to eat again so we went to our favorite Mexican restaurant. When we got home, he found that the mailman had delivered the hat rack that he ordered so now he's on the floor in the living room putting it together. Soon it will be bedtime and we'll have spent a happy day together.
We have our own shredder with a box next to it for papers that need to be shredded. From time to time, Jake shreds for awhile til he fills a plastic bag or two and we put the shredded stuff in the recycling bin.

Marcelyn my DH has been collecting for years. He has purchased many finds at artifact shows or from private individuals. He's well aware of the federal and state laws regarding Indian artifacts. (DH has an archeology degree) He certainly wouldn't want to jeopardize a whole collection by going out digging for them. We have found some points on our property which is very rare. I was shocked to see them wash up in the creek.
Heather Thanks for admiring DH's collection. It's only a small part of it. He has boxes and boxes of pottery, but he prefers the Mississippian cultures and the Caddo Indians. The points are Paleo. Much much older.
Lanette You may not want to give away your artifacts. They can be worth a lot of money.
Becca Love those rocks! They are works of art! And the video of the bank building. Very interesting.
Signing out early. Going to church early tomorrow.
Have a good evening all!

My husband is a big collector too. He has been collecting American Indian artifacts for 50 years. Some Paleo points are 10-12 thousand years old and the Mississippian pottery about 800-1000 years old. I love them too since I always bought American Indian (Navajo) turquoise jewelry. I also collect some Indian dolls and baskets too.
Anasazi pottery from SW Colorado;
Some of DH's collection:
Thanks ... and nice collection!!
That photo of bicycle stuff is only a fraction of the whole collection. I see bicycle stuff ... and must have it.
Machka - love your little bikes! What a neat way to display them. Also loved the pictures of your neighborhood. I may have to put the Oz area on my bucket list. Any US Ex-pats living around there?
There's more in the cabinets below, and scattered here and there around the house.
Australia is beautiful, and quite varied. We're in Tasmania, an hilly/mountainous island state, so most of my photos will have water and hills or mountains in them.
There are some people from the US around ... and other places. I know another Canadian, several from the UK, and a large number from Asia.Machka - What a beautiful area! If I had such stunning vistas at the top of every hill and at each bend, I would definitely bike more often! I hope the hills weren't too much for you!
I have been getting better at the hills. When I moved here, the hills killed me and I was astounded at the people who could cycle up them like they were nothing. Bunch of mountain goats! But then, I was carrying extra weight ... so I lost the weight and kept practising on the hills and most of them aren't too bad now.
I did, however, walk one of them yesterday. Strava says it was 46% at the start but I don't believe that for a moment. They show the middle part as about 25% which is much more believable, and still a very steep climb.4 -
Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good Evening my dear Friends,
Beth, too bad about your car and the deer but glad your son was okay.
Ginger, way to go!
Tailee, sorry for your loss. Good for you on getting back on track. Take one day at a time and you’ll get there.
Sending love, good thoughts and cool sunshine to all of you.
I Love you

GRITSandSLUTS wrote: »Beth – I am also meticulous about my checking account and I want to balance to the penny. When I buy checks, it drives me crazy that they don’t tell you when they send them how much they’ll cost, they just take it out; so I put that they have taken out $40.
I haven't used a chequing account or balanced a cheque book since ... um ... well, definitely since I moved to Australia in 2009, but I think I ordered my last batch of cheques in 1999 or 2000 ... that would have been when I went 95% electronic. I did have to use them for rent until 2004, and then again for rent in 2007 for a few months, but I think that would have been the last time I used a cheque. They are either not accepted anymore, or only very reluctantly accepted. I still have what they call a "chequing account" but I don't access it with little pieces of paper anymore.
However, we do keep a good eye on the statements.
And regarding shredding ... I did a lot of that before I moved to Australia. Got rid of several file boxes of "paperwork" I had been hanging onto for decades.
What I am considering now is a service that will scan stuff for me. I have made enquiries and there is one who will do what I've got for about $400. So I'm debating. I just don't seem to have the time to do it myself ... and it could save us money on our next move ...
I've got lots of file boxes of things I've collected over the years ... newspaper articles, stuff from all the courses I've taken (I've taken over 100 courses since graduating high school), photos, etc. etc. I think I still want to keep those things because they made it through 2 previous purges, but I'd like to keep them on a back-up harddrive instead of in several file boxes. It's just the process of making that happen which is holding me up.3 -

Dana – My guys used to be in a hunting club; and there was farm land all around, so when the farmer plowed the fields, they’d go out looking for arrowheads and sheds (racks off deer) and stuff. Once they found what looked like a musket ball. Iron about 2” in diameter with scratches around it. Looks like if it got shot out of a gun, it’d knock you out and probably kill you. Also found a pair of wire rimmed glasses that were ‘old’ not the normal kind you can buy now.
Lanette – She dragged him (Earl) down the driveway or just drove him down the driveway. LOL!!! Makes you wonder about finding old people who have outlived everybody in their family up in an old house full of cats and just old stuff. Did nobody miss Earl? I’d think having Earl getting ripe out in the shed might have driven her crazy enough that the authorities would think she has lost a few screws. OMGoodness, I hope I don’t live that long. If she lived in Atlanta and sat him in the passenger seat she could get in the fast lane for commuters. You’d be surprised how many people will make something that looks like a person so they can ride in that lane. When our DYS was in HS, he snuck out of our house one night leaving the window cracked a little and the screen unfastened. Like all teenagers, me included, think they can fool their parents by stuffing pillows under the covers. I got cold and went looking for the reason. Draft like crazy coming from his room. Pulled covers back, it wasn’t him in bed, so I locked the screen and window and locked it and went back to bed. No telling how long he sat out in the cold on the doorstep before he gave up and rang the doorbell. I had ‘tossed his room’ and then ‘short-sheeted’ his bed. Got up, let him in, went back to bed and heard him grunting and groaning trying to get his feet under the cover, smiled, turned over and went to sleep (laughing).
Becca – WOW!!!! The painted rocks are WONDERFUL!!!! I think I will know what I might do tomorrow. Paint rocks.
Loved the bank video! Amazing!
We burn whatever has our name on it. Junk Mail, anything with an Rx label, taking it off bottle, throw bottle in trashcan; and chunk the label in the ‘burn can’.
KJ – I don’t see how young couples with several children make enough to pay childcare and bring home enough money to make it worthwhile. I made good money and childcare was ½ of what my children had to pay for theirs.
Joyce – Most alcoholics don’t think of anyone but themselves and when they either fall off the wagon or they make enemies, it is ‘never’ their fault. They want to blame others. You have to learn how to avoid having them in your way to upset your apple cart. They need to learn to tow their own. Fat chance of that, if they can weasel their way into someone’s life and make them just as miserable. Charlie’s ‘step-mom’ sounds like she was the ‘wicked’ stepmom.
Machka – Several years ago, I had my ‘ID’ used by someone else; and, the HELLO-KITTY I went through to get that all straightened out, I want a paper trail that I can go to and show it to someone and say, ‘I did not ‘write’ this check or charge this amount’ … correct it. I had a double charge for a fill-up of gas on the same day, at the same place, and the reason was because when I put my card in the gas tank to pay and get a receipt, it told me to ‘see the cashier’. Apparently, the thing was low or out of paper; so when I asked for a receipt it doubled it. It was easy to dispute … just took about 2 months to straighten it out. They’ll deduct money immediately out of your account; but, it takes months to have it credited back to your account/card.
I want a statement, I don’t want to have to make up another freaking password for an account that I might only use 3 or 4 x’s a month or year. We don’t get a newspaper. Not from our town or from Albany. Waste of paper, in my opinion.

Lanette: I never considered asking the Credit Union if they have shredding opportunities. I'll give them a call on Monday. Thanks for a good idea. :flowerforyou:
Barbie: I hope you enjoy the Lavender icecream. We also have a shredder, but it wouldn't be tough enough to handle old tax papers. :noway: We have things that have been hanging around for years and years that need shredding. :ohwell:
Becca: I love the US Bank story.
I had a good day today. I got the best compliment ever from the woman who owns the stable. She was able to take Arrow to the county fair and patrol the fairgrounds with another rider. He was a good boy for her and she gave me some of the credit for his improved behavior. I am so touched by her kind words. I am the one of the least experienced riders at the stable & have been enjoying my time with Arrow. We've both been improving. Tomorrow DH & I need to take the rented scooter back & I suspect we'll be buying one like it. It has been a nice asset for my husband and enabled him to get out and do things for fun, like going to the fair.

Welcome new girls
Off to a family Baptism today, nice to see DHs family, although all live here we are not what you call close and apart from son and wife my family are scattered.
Got my pre op tomorrow, not looking forward to that, hate getting drops in my eyes.
Have been pretty good foodwise this week, lost a little, seem to have got past the snacking bout I was on. Just as well I have been very good on exercising or I would defo have put weight on
We have a shredder and I try to do it as I go along and every now and again get rid of stuff from file cabinet. We can't put shredded paper in our recycling bin???

Sorry to hear about the identity theft.
My husband and I were trying to think what could still be paid for using a cheque here in Australia.
It took some thought ... and then we came up with two things:
People can still pay their utilities with a cheque-like system at the post office if they want to go that route.
People do use bank drafts/money orders for bond deposits when they rent.

Sunday -- Testing the Rain Gear!
Rain jacket ... good in a light mist, but that's about it. Sadly. It is an old favourite purchased about 14 years ago.
Rain pants ... excellent
Gortex boots ... not bad
Rain gloves ... excellent
Rain helmet cover ... good
We knew it was going to be chilly (about 10C) and wet, but we decided to go for a ride anyway. One of the things that kind of surprised us a bit were the number of other cyclists out there. But not much in the way of pedestrians! It was chilly and wet ... rained for probably 75% of the ride, but for the most part, we were reasonably comfortable.
We stopped at the Red Wall, for a few photos ...
Distance: 50.0 km
Elevation: 438 m
Moving Time: 2:48:14
Elapsed Time: 3:02:59
Speed: Avg: 17.8 km/h | Max: 45.0 km/h
Heart Rate: Avg: 128 bpm | Max: 154 bpm
Gotta love the way my helmet cover looks when I've got a helmet light!

Morning. Had a great visit with SIL and MIL and brought our 20 yo god son home with us for a few days. He is a very quiet, serious young man and looking for non profit work since graduating from USouth Florida. He will spend a few days with us--he is so serious!
We did have fun in Brooklyn walking around an outdoor food hall, it was so $&$&@ hot out, I had to sit down and catch my breath! Then we found a fancy shmancy ice cream shop and had blueberry lavender ice cream that we shared with DD and perked right up--calories are still within the daily limit.
Kelly you are so organized and insightful, I'll bet your DD will really need and appreciate you for those accountability phone calls- if she's still nursing she's gotta drink drink drink and boy do I remember how hungry I was !
And stressed out!!
Another hot day ahead--heading to the gym. Stay cool everyone.

Kate UK: We have a shedder, too, but it is too small for the job we need done. There is no way that we could shred all the old tax documents that need to be shredded without going crazy or killing our little shredder. It is a one page at a time unit. We really want to get it to one of the shredding trucks that do massive work. We have to keep tax documents for so many eyars and then can shred them. We've been married a long time and haven't shredded any old documents in years and years. :noway:
Machka: The photos are spectacular! The bikes against the red sky photo is powerful.
We are planning to go to Astoria Sunday Market today. The offshore weather is set to be windy & I hope the conditions in town are good. I'll bet anything we take a little time to drive down to the mouth of the Columbia River. I expect the waves will be dramatic based on the forecast and wave watching is a favorite pastime.

Hi all,
Drkatie - It does take a bit of time to get used to the beast! I have enjoyed my experiments with bread rising, yoghurt, paneer, bean sprouting etc. Today I made yellow split pea soup by just chucking everything in with a frozen kielbasa! ! Next time I will prefry a bit of bacon, but it is very tasty.
Going to try sweet potatoes tonight to have with the Barbecoa Beef I froze. I will also give them 5 mins in my small oven to crisp up. Best dish was the Black Bean and Ham soup, but I haven't had a fail. My tomato sauce which usually takes hours, was v good too. Stock excellent. Chilli good. Sometimes things need to be stirred around on Sauté to bring them together.
I would love to try cheesecake, but don't trust myself. (#17 is the best one, they say) I think I will wait for company to make that. I have ordered a 7 inch bundt pan to try TOG banana bread with walnuts and choc chips. DH will be eating it, I'm not tempted.
I love to batch cook things like brown rice, quinoa, giant couscous, garbanzos, and freeze in portions for salads. I did a big batch of steel cut oats and froze them. Just had a portion for a pm snack. My son only uses his for grains, beans and curries/stews.
It could be worth looking at some of the best websites, like Thisoldgal (TOG) Two sleevers, Amy and Jackie (pressurecooking) and, one I have just found which goes into all the science, seriouseats.
Good luck!
I've just booked my flights to Glasgow for October for "the girls" reunion. Unfortunately my "difficult friend " will be coming on the same flights with me. Give me patience!
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxx

Hey all! thought you might get a kick out of this! My older brother posted a video on facebook showing a camping hack. Cooking an omelet in a freezer bag in a pan of boiling water. I was intrigued on if it would actually work. I tried it this morning and it worked. It said cook for 10 minutes, but mine took about 15. Two whole eggs, four egg whites, zucchini, onion, tumeric, and an ounce of sharp cheddar. I am sure it would be quicker to make them in a pan; and then the very weird part of my brain wondered about the boiling of the plastic and the possibility of the plastic toxins leeching into my food. The omelet tasted good, but was less enjoyable to eat with those thoughts in my head.
3 -
Well - plastic is so much better than using Styrofoam.
As for paperless; I do have some things taken out automactically; but, those charges remain the same unless I am notified a month in advance that they will change. I do use my debit card a lot because I don't want to waste time writing a check; but, as soon as I get back in my car, I immediately enter them into my regisiter. I have forgotten to do this once or twice and chased my tail trying to figure out where the difference is.
Taking it easy today; but, will walk later (maybe even right before the sun goes down). Sure it would be cooler to go this morning; but, I did not sleep too well last night and haven't been sleeping as much as I should. This is stressful for me and can interfere with my medications.
I see maybe a nap later on this afternoon.
