Diet Coke, friend or foe?

Hi, I am determined to lose all this weight this time. My husband is convinced, from all the internet stuff he reads, that Diet Coke is the most evil of things you can ingest. According to him it will cause all kinds of trouble, from making me gain weight, destroying my pancreas, to bloating my stomach. I love the taste, and feel it is a great sweet treat with no calories.

I was also terrified of any and all fake sweeteners because my Mom raised to believe it was all poison. I normally don't even drink regular soda. But after a few months of dieting and cutting out my fruit juices in favor of actual fruit, I got sick of just water.
I had my very first Diet Pepsi last week. Now I have a whole 12 pack of Diet Cherry Pepsi and am enjoying one daily like an excited kid. I don't like the taste of the fake sweetener much... but it's like a fun treat that I get to have now with no calories. I've not noticed any adverse effects and since it's new to me, I noticed the package advertises "aspartame free!" so I'm guessing that was the questionable sweetener everyone lost their mind over circa 1990. I think you'll be OK.5 -
It's fine. Diet Dr Pepper is where it's at13

Love diet coke. Drank several litres a week while losing 100 pounds. It's not your enemy.9

Friend. Oh so friendly friend. All the "you're totally gonna get MS and fibro and lupus" stuff has about as much science behind it as autism being caused by vaccines. So exactly none.13

Ignore your husband in this respect.
Enjoy your Diet Coke.5 -
It's just processed sugar water. Won't kill you, but if other things are off, it will kill you22

It's not going to hurt you to enjoy one a day or so. Just don't make it the only thing you drink.4

So on one side your husband's beliefs....
On the other every food standards agency in the world who have extensively tested every ingredient and passed them as safe for human consumption.
Pretty safe bet your husband is wrong.

You're right. Diet Coke contains Aspartame. Which is probably worse than sugar.
When I was typing my first post I had regular Coke on the brain30 -
I've been drinking diet coke / pepsi for, ahem, at least 25 years, through fat times and thin. I can't drink ordinary because the sugar makes my sensitive teeth hum! I love it and have never had any side effects or problems of any kind. I guess if you are allergic or sensitive to any of the ingredients then you should stay away, but that goes for ANYTHING that causes you problems, if not then have away at it and enjoy!!4

Are you OP's husband? You need to stop reading "internet stuff".15 -

Except it's been studied so much and nothing has been proven that it's worse. https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1308408/why-aspartame-isnt-scary15 -
Print out a few of the scientific peer reviewed studies that have been done on artificial sweeteners and hand him one everytime he says something about it.
I hate diet coke but I love Pepsi Max and have lost weight drinking it. My sister always preferred the taste of diet coke even as a child and has been drinking it since the '80s and has had no issues from it.1 -
You mention sweet treat...if you are having a glass a time or two a week or something, I wouldn't worry about it at all. Now if you are having multiple glasses a day then I would be concerned. Everything in moderation. That said...I can't stand the headaches that come along with aspartame, so it isn't on my list of must haves :-).4

I don't really care about the sweeteners and I will have a diet coke from a fountain or whatever but I find the diet sodas in plastic bottles are so fizzy they make me really bloated. Diet Dr Pepper makes me all burpy. I kinda hate what it does aesthetically when I work hard at my eating and fitness to look slender so I tend to avoid it just for that reason.0

Dump the woo believing hubby and keep the coke?
Seriously, diet soda is neither good nor bad. Unless you have an intolerance for the specific sweetener used, it does not harm you in any way. No, there is no nutritional value in it, but there are almost no calories either. All you get is tasty water and caffeine (depending on the variety you drink). Not a fan of diet Coke and I try to avoid caffeine but I do enjoy other diet sodas.
As for the bloating, nothing a good burp or fart won't take care of.9 -

Make mine caffeine free and I am with you on that!1 -
For me? Diet coke: neutral. Coke zero: friend.9

"Probably" worse than sugar. You don't actually know, but you're willing to commit to a high probability that it's worse than sugar...based on what, exactly?8 -

True. In order to get it without caffeine, I buy caffeine free diet Pepsi and add a few drops of cherry Kool-Aid flavor drops.3 -

One of the glories of a healthy marriage is to agree to disagree. You will lose all the weight you want to by paying attention to everything else you are eating.
If it were me, I'd get myself a lovely glass, a funky straw, add ice and my diet PEPSI and drink it VERY SLOWLY in front of him. Daily.10 -

My parents said I came from a lab, but they still love me.14
