How did she know there were fish to begin with?

Rogers included the text of the girl's letter in his book, "Dear Mister Rogers, Does It Ever Rain in Your Neighborhood?" published in 1996.
As he noted in the book:

One girl and her family wrote to tell us there was a special reason why she wanted me to talk about feeding the fish each day.

    Dear Mister Rogers,

Please say when you are feeding your fish, because I worry about them. I can’t see if you are feeding them, so please say you are feeding them out loud.

Katie, age 5 (Father’s note: Katie is blind, and she does cry if you don’t say that you have fed the fish.)

    That doesn't help me

So she clearly knew there were fish because Mr. Rogers says hello to the *kitten* fish sometimes......

I mean, she could hear them.

She probably saw the episode where he and Officer Clemmons were seeing who could swallow the most live goldfish.

    I mean...heard.

Sounds like my childhood was missing some quality programming

Either that or my brothers made the whole thing up while I was blindfolded and tied to a chair while playing a game of "Ransom".

No where did it say he said hello to the fish! That makes sense

He always talks to his fish. It's the only thing he really does.

I know he wears sweaters. And also something about a train

Mr. Rogers loves to run trains.... to imagination land where he meets all his friends like the duck lady and the cat boy that lives in the clock tower.

TIL That when Crystal Pepsi was released, Coca-Cola released a competitor called Tab Clear, however Tab Clear was intentionally marketed poorly in order to hurt Crystal Pepsi's image by product association. The "born to die" strategy was successful and both campaigns were dead 6 months later.

That no matter how many times someone complains they're putting on weight, to never suggest it's the multiple antidepressants they're on. Better yet, to never comment at all.

TIL that the “ah-choo” sound people make when sneezing is a cultural learned behavior. For example, in the Phillipines they instead say “ha-ching”, the Japanese say “hakashun”, and deaf people don’t add any sounds at all.

TIL I learned of Grandma Gatewood who hiked the 2,200 mile Appalachian trail at 55 bringing only Converse shoes, an army blanket, a raincoat, and a plastic shower curtain after reading about it in a magazine and telling her children she was going for a walk. She hiked it again at 72 and 75.

In our community Woo means that you think an idea or approach is too good to be true.

It's slang from health fitness. Even though most people haven't heard it or use it that way. I still don't understand the point of it.

TIL Donnie Yen (the blind monk in Star Wars: Rogue One/star of the Ip Man films) was once leaving a Hong Kong nightclub with his girlfriend when they were attacked by a gang who had been bothering them earlier in the night. Donnie hospitalised 8 of them.

TIL the creators of "Parks and Recreation" did research for the show by interviewing actual government officials. One said, "Well, I’m a libertarian, so I don’t really believe in the mission of my job. Yes, I’m aware of the irony." The character of Ron Swanson was born.

TIL Douglas Adams came up with the title for The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy while lying drunk in a field near Innsbruck with a copy of The Hitch-Hikers Guide to Europe. Looking up at the stars, he thought it would be a good idea for someone to write a hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy as well.
