    Snapple fact #1378

The brain is the only organ in the human body without pain receptors.

    Well fms.

True, that's why some people are able to be woken up from anesthesia in the middle of brain surgery to let the surgeons poke around and see if they are touching critical areas like speech and language. Crazy.

Nice! I'm a PS fan myself (mainly because that's what I got in the divorce). I especially like the D3 - it's the only one I've played semi-obsessively when time permits

TIL Margrethe II, the queen of Denmark, felt compelled to draw illustrations for The Lord of the Rings in the 70s and sent them to Tolkien himself. He noted her style was quite similar to his own. Her drawings were used as a basis for the illustrations in the Danish translation of the books.

I wouldn't let mine have a gaming system because I knew what would happen:

Get addicted to it, disregard all rules, not do homework, start failing grades, and such.

After years of begging and pleading, I finally caved when my parents came over with one my step brother had given to see if we wanted it. I set rules in place. What happened? Sure as *kitten*, exactly what I predicted. Had no support from the wife, since she was more interested in being his best friend than his mom...

Ironically, they had issues with their nephew doing the same thing as my son did. Coincidence?

TIL that a teenager fooled an entire school and its officials by pretending to be the State Senator. He was chauffeured, given a tour, and spoke to the high school students about being involved in politics. They only found out when the real Senator showed up the next month.

TIL that ‘saltwater pool’ is a bit of a misnomer. They have just as much chlorine as chlorinated pools, but what’s different is the delivery system.

Regular chlorine contains FACs (free available chlorine) and CACs (combined available chlorine). FACs are the unused chlorine while CACs are FACs that have combined with biological material like sweat and urine and are therefore no longer free to sanitize the water. CACs are responsible for the chlorine smell in pools. The stronger the smell, the less free available chlorine there is to clean the water.

So-called saltwater pools use a different method of chlorination that maximizes FACs, and therefore cleanliness, and eliminates CACs more effectively, thus reducing the odor. The amount of salt is usually slightly lower than the human threshold to taste, which is why it can be difficult to tell if you’re in a traditional or a ‘saltwater’ pool sometimes.

TIL The bias and slanted media coverage of the 2005 Michael Jackson molestation trial has been referred to as "One of the Most Shameful Episodes In Journalistic History". The media would extensively cover the seedy accusations but completely unreported witnesses crumbling under cross examination.
