@shanaber interesting read on the TOM, a non issue for me, but Skip was laughing Friday that her Coach knows more about her TOM than I do. ha ha3

@rusgolden Great race! A 2 minute PR is brilliant.
@JessicaMcB You ran a 40 mile training run? That's more than a marathon and a half, in one run. And then a 20 miler on the next day... Wow. Just wow.
@BruinsGal_91 Congratulations on the age-group medal!
@skippygirlsmom Lovely new shoes
@shanaber Too funny about the guy shadowboxing on the treadmill. Although if I had been there to watch it, it would have creeped me out too. And sorry about your Ninja. I've got this monster, which happily blends everything I throw in, but it seems it's not sold anywhere anymore.
@5512bf Great run, good that you felt strong the entire time.
@WandaVaughn Congratulations on the 6mi PR!
@HonuNui Thank you for the reminder about the BlockThe Sun run, I've finally got around to registering for the virtual option today.
@amymoreorless That's a cool photo, it looks like that cows horns are even longer than its legs
@kimlight2 Sorry that your knee didn't feel right today. I hope it was indeed due to the different running form, and will be gone the next time you run.
@Dcorrick Great start into the month, you are already nearly one third to your goal on the 6th.
@vandinem I wish you a good recovery, good that you can come back to running now.

Not my hybrid chicken legs / goon legs? I think my thighs were the smallest, calves appear to be statically normal.0 -
August Running Totals (miles)
8/1 – 9.06 warm up + speed work
8/2 – unplanned rest day
8/3 – 15.02 easy
8/4 – rest day
8/5 – 14.07 pacers' run
8/6 – 7.85 easy 60 minutes
August total to date – 46.00
Nominal challenge goal: 260 miles
Real goals: Stay healthy. Train well toward the Rochester Marathon. Win my age group at Pound the Ground 10K on August 9. Run a respectable sub-20 5K at Bergen on August 12. Run the USATF Masters Mile (road) in under 6 minutes on August 25.
Today's notes – Not feeling it today. The weather wasn't great, but it was better than much of what I've run in recently at 77º F (25º C) with 41% relative humidity. There was intermittent shade on the route, and intermittent breezes making it not feel so bad. And still, it took me 9 minutes to warm up to where running was routine, and it just wasn't the pleasure it usually is.
4 minutes from the end, I realized that I have a mental problem with an assignment defined by duration. If the assignment had been 8 miles, I would have gone out and run 8 miles. But the assignment was 60 minutes. That's shorter than 8 miles, but there's the mental aspect of "are we there yet" and "how much distance do I need to add to get home at 60 minutes?" As I was contemplating adding a last 20 second out and back to make it come out, I realized this was much like the "how much longer is it" feeling of a dreadmill. Granted, everything else was better than running on a dreadmill; but there's still that mental hurdle of running for a duration instead of running for a distance.
I'll have to think about what kind of mental game I can play to mitigate that feeling before the next 60 minute assignment shows up in the plan.

@MobyCarp I totally understand the time/distance issue. I convert to miles at a good pace and go easy once the target of time is reached. If I'm a mile from home then it's an extra ten minutes of easy zone 1 pace for more cool down, but I'm unsure how much that adversely effects the desired results of the training. Ideally I would a plan only specify times for segments within the workout and have a total distance not a total time.0

August Goal: 60 miles
8/1: 4 miles
8/2: 3.1 miles
8/3: 2.2 miles
8/5: kr30dc day 1
8/6: 5.4 miles
14.7/60 miles completed
I did my "long" run today. I know that 5.4 miles isn't long to a lot of you, but that is my longest distance to date. I realized as I was runnung today that the first 5k were realy pretty easy. The last couple of miles were pretty tough, but I can now run a 5k with no problem. I never thought I would be able to do that. I know that eventualy I will be able to run a 10k without dying.
I did day 1 of the kr30dc yesterday but haven't done day 2 yet. My husband said he would do it with me so I have been kind of waiting on him. If he doesn't do it this evening then I will probably just start over tomorrow by myself.

I ran yesterday. Technically was a 5k race. But I did well at keeping my pace reasonable by not taking as many walk breaks as I have been lately. And my friend had her two toddlers in the stroller - which is back to being the handicap She needs to let me keep up. It is fascinating that what I am currently describing as a slow, moderate, try not to agrivate injury pace is still faster than I could run a 5k 18months ago.... crazy how our perspective adjusts.

August goal is 125
Aug 1.....no run.....MTD 0 miles
Aug 2.....no run.....MTD 0 miles
Aug 3.....no run.....MTD 0 miles
Aug 4.....no run.....MTD 0 miles
Aug 5.....no run.....MTD 0 miles
Aug 6.....10 miles..MTD 10 miles
I have not posted since Aug 1 and am some 300 posts behind. This board is just crazy.
Finally got a run in this week. Life has been hectic for a variety of reasons. This was my last week with my employer and I was staying late to ensure things were ready for my replacement. My last day was Friday and I start my new job tomorrow.
Then this weekend we moved my son to his new college apartment and that took all Saturday.
So today was the first free day I had and despite the fact that the temp was in the 90's I was going to get a run in no matter what. I was able to get 10 extremely slow miles in, during which I probably lost about 4-5 pounds despite frequent hydration using a camelback. Heart rate was way too high for such a long run, but I just could not keep it down in the heat even when slowing to a crawl.
I am starting Hal Higdon's 1/2 marathon plan this week and have a scheduled rest day on Monday.
Upcoming races:
Kellie's Krew 10K, Aug 26, Dunn NC
FCYC Glow Run 5K, Sep 16, Fayetteville NC
Turkey Trot 1/2 Marathon, Nov. Pinehurst NC
Stay safe everyone.11 -
@PastorVincent - Good job getting 2 races run in one day! And now you know some things you didn't know before. You're faster than you thought, relative to the pack of runners in a race. And you need to line up more aggressively, because it's far more common for a 5K to use gun time than chip time. I've never seen a race that was shorter than a half marathon use chip time, unless it was big enough that it needed multiple corrals and/or waves. Even when a shorter race reports net time, gun time is typically used for awards.
Offical Age Group Results:
1) 24:08
2) 24:28
3) 24:51
4) 25:03
5) 25:32 <-- Me
I think I could have beat that 24:08 had I been closer to the front for my start. Bah. He might have run faster had I caught up to him of course, but I think I could have been in that 1-3 grouping for sure. Ah well.
Starting to think that if I pay a bit more attention to my training I might actually be a competitor in my age group. I seriously never considered that before.JessicaMcB wrote: »@PastorVincent you are so far from peaking- you are racing a hell of a season! And with glow sticks no less
Thanks! But other than being a really nice thing to say, what would make you say "so far from peaking"?And like I said- I'm all about supporting a company I like especially if I'm spending that much anyhow. I've had some things 2-3 years and they show no sign of wear, other than the printed tag wearing off. Wear what works, just sharing some sisterly Oiselle love!
What is it about them that you like? Wondering about having my wife shop there if there is a strong social good reason.3 -
Hello all, I have done this challenge back in 2014-2015. I'll skip the "nobody-cares-why-i-was-absent-for-2-years" story and just run, occasionally posting my reports with not-so-funny remarks and comments.
So, my goal for August is 120 miles.
Goal: 120
Currently: 27
8/1 - 6 miles
8/2 - 0, strength training
8/3 - 8 miles
8/4 - 0, rest day
8/5 - 7 miles
8/6 - 6 miles
Happy running!8 -

Wow, too beautiful out to not run! After a long dog walk this morning, I did a lot of house projects (prepping for painting and putting up a sample color, etc.). Finally got out for my run this evening and it was a lovely 73 degrees and only 47% humidity. Tomorrow and Tuesday look like promising cool days as well. Love this somewhat unusual August so far.

I love the idea of a company for women by women. Women can have such a wonderful impact when we unite, too often we tear each other down, refuse to accept one another and tear each other apart. Girl world can be so full of Ill will and hate.
Oiselle supports female athletes through pregnancy, and the elites advocate for equal pay amoungst female athletes. Too often women are pressured to choose career or family. Oiselle supports both. Being a female athlete doesn't make the big bucks. They do it for the love of the sport.
So, when I wear my Oiselle, I wear it with a heartfelt connection to women everywhere. I'm one of the flock, an Oiselle bird.
And when I first started running, I pretend to be Lauren Fleshman or Kara Goucher- I seriously try to channel Kara on race day.
ETA "OISELLE TEAM
Since day one, our mission has been the same: to create a sisterhood of support at a variety of levels from beginners to professionals, from the roads to the trails to the track. We are committed to fostering a team that challenges, supports and empowers runners of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Each of our stories are interwoven into one collective voice and that voice is behind every mile and every individual flight."8 -
@Runningmischka Has it really been that long? So great to see you back!0

8/3: 2.2 miles
8/5: kr30dc day 1
8/6: 5.4 miles; kr30dc day 2
14.7/60 miles completed
It was too late to edit my other post but I wanted to add that I did completed day 2 of kr30dc. I figured posting it here would help me to actually do it. It doesn't look like I am going to get the hubby to do it with me after all so I will need something to keep me accountable. That frog stretch really hurt my knees. They are a little bruised. I ended up doing the alternate adductor stretch today. I don't know if I did it wrong, or if I just have really bony knees.5 -
It started raining, so I figured it would be a nice opportunity to go out and run, although it was still pretty darned warm (93F with the dew point at 70F roughly translates to "I didn't really think this through enough"). As Mondays are normally my fast run, and this being a cutback week, and me not wanting to get up in the morning, I made the first 5k the fast part of the run, and then followed up with a 2.5 mile cool-down run immediately afterwards.
The 5k managed to come in at an average pace of 7:06, and my HR averaged out at 180 bpm; definitely more than a tempo run. The cool-down run would have been more welcome if the rain had actually cooled things down any...instead it was like running through a sauna. At altitude. Fun!

Hi all!
You guys rock with all the inputs and activities you post here! Me on the other hand I stay at home or swim since it's 39-40 oC (102 oF) here, the asphalt itself is boiling. But I managed to go for a run twice:
8/4: 15.2k -Slow LR-
8/6: 12k -w/u, 8k negative splits, c/d-
Goal: 27.2k/150k
Weather forecast gives extensive heat for this week as well, but I will try to go for easy run after the sunset.
Take care and stay hydrated!

Calf: 37 cm.
10 cm above my knee: 38 cm.
Widest part of thigh: 49 cm
Height: 176 cm (5 ft 9.5 in) (because it seems that might be relevant).
@Elise4270 Is there a spreadsheet of our stats anywhere? Seems like the sort of thing someone should be doing.
@shrcpr It's my whole mission in life to find decent running bottoms in stock with phone and key pockets!
I've heard so many great things about Oiselle, and would love to support them, but can never find what I'm after there.
@_nikkiwolf_ Woo Hooooooo, you've got parkrun!!!
@rusgolden Wow, happy 5K runniversary, and you look awesome in the Embrace the Suck T-shirt!!
@kgirlhart Bravo on your longest run!! So happy for you!
01 Aug – 8 km
04 Aug – 34 km – marathon ready!
07 Aug – 9.3 km in the rain
Goal: Run my first marathon on August 27

My wife uses a Roo pouch that we bought at the 1/2 marathon expo. It seems to work really well for her: http://theroosport.com/

8/1: 7 miles of Track Tuesday
8/2: 7 miles easy
8/3: 8 miles "tempo run"
8/3: 6.3 miles group run
8/4: Rest day
8/5: 6 miles
8/6: 16 miles
8/7: 6 miles group run
56.3 miles of 250 goal miles
Easy peasy group run of 6 miles at 6 am. The last few weeks this group has broken into two groups: regular runner folk and GAME OF THRONES RECAP RUNNERS. And after last night's episode, we needed the entire hour for GOT feelings and theories.
@Elise4270 I love the reasons you love Oiselle. I second all those reasons! Plus I love the community they create; all about empowering women of all abilities, shapes, sizes, ages, etc. Plus they make cute stuff (though honestly I wait for it to go on sale 90% of the time because they do charge quite a bit...).

Any of you ladies run in Sparkle Skirts? Someone mentioned them up thread and was wondering if I should mention them to my wife, but they are not cheap!
$75!?!
https://sparkleskirts.com/collections/sparkletech-hikerchic/products/primrose-hikerchic-long-style?variant=22474488452
I thought my UA Heatgear was pricey... sheesh.
Anyways, wondering if they are any good at that price?1 -
I love this thread so much. I get great advice about running and gear. I get to see cool pictures from around the world, and I can discuss things like average calf size without people thinking I'm weird. And talking about calves, I am taking a break from running for a week, so that my calf can heal properly. I'm going to be chewing the furniture after three days, so y'all had better get out there and run so I can be entertained by your exploits.5

9.1 this am. I was supposed to do 4 cruise intervals at zone 3 pace for 5 minutes each with 2 minutes zone 1 recovery. I started fine but ran my first interval a little too fast. The second interval was better but still more like zone 4 than zone 3. By the last interval I was definitely in zone 4 and 5 minutes became 8. I started cooling down with about 5 miles left until I got home. The plan was to run those miles in zone 2 or 1 and recover from the speed but ambition got the best of me. All the talk of 5k races had my mind pondering what could I do? So with 2.5 miles left to run, I let it all out. The run was good about 7:30 pace the HR was too high slip into zone 5 at one point. Tuesday is usually my cross training day on the elliptical but now that I'm on Strava the stupid leader board is mocking me and I want to be up the board. I'm going on vacation Tuesday with the family and so part of my thought is that I don't know if I'll run.(Who am I kidding?) I will run slow and easy tomorrow.
