@RespectTheKitty - you might want to check this out. There are physiological reasons why you feel exhausted running during your TOM. Hang in there - your next run will likely feel better!!

Excellent read Shana! Thanks for that! Of course, in perimenopause all of that applies each and every day!5 -
Sept 17th, about 5 weeks left6
-
8/1: 7 miles of Track Tuesday
8/2: 7 miles easy
8/3: 8 miles "tempo run"
8/3: 6.3 miles group run
8/4: Rest day
8/5: 6 miles
8/6: 16 miles
50.3 miles of 250 goal miles
The morning started out beautiful: cool and sunny and quiet... but then DISASTER STRUCK!!!! in the form of my first gel (of two) being LUMPY!!! I think a bunch of plastic got in it when I opened it, but I wasn't chancing it and I had to spit it out. Which sucked because this was at mile 6 of 16... long way to go. And then I ran out of water at mile 13, took a wrong turn, had to readjust the route on the fly... finally got to 16 miles, stopped my watch, booked it into Panera for the biggest iced coffee I could carry, and shuffled on home (2 blocks away).
Getting back into the swing of a training plan, I can really feel where all my weaknesses are. My whole right side is far weaker than it has been previously; I spent 3 weeks this spring with a tweaked back and ever since then my right glute/lower back/hamstrings/everything have felt weak. Definitely need to be hitting the gym on the regular. I may cut out a speed workout this week just to get some extra recovery miles since I'm still adjusting to getting back to lifting 2x a week.

@kristinegift great job gutting it out this morning! A lumpy gel sounds awful!0
-
8/1 = 4.5 miles
8/2 = kettlebell strength training
8/3 = 7.5 miles (six - 6 minute speed intervals)
8/4 = 3.5 miles (track workout- 800m sprints & 200m recovery walk)
8/5 = 4.5 miles
8/6 = 15 miles
Started at 5am with a running friend for 15 miles. It was cool, breezy and there was lots of light from the bright moon when we started.
My morning running buddy usually trains using the Galloway run/walk interval thing so the pace was slow and easy. We both had lots of family drama and general bitching about life to get off our chests. Overall a very therapeutic run.
Oh, we also ran into a new friend on one country road:
(August miles) 35/150 (August goal miles)
Upcoming Races:
8/19 = 100th Verns No Frills 5K
10/28 = Hill Country Halloween Half Marathon
12/10 = BCS Marathon
1/6/18 = River Road Run Half Marathon10 -
@amymoreorless therapy runs are great! Nice running!1
-
@MNLittleFinn Thanks! It was definitely a slog once the water was gone. Pretty sure the gel was ok but had plastic in it... but only time will tell I guess! Eeeek!1
-
@kristinegift Sounds like that run was a bit stressful!

I think I'm going to have to start a "no excuses" month and get to the gym, do my PT, and this 30 day challenge bit- that i'm afraid to even look at because I may not be able to do it. I'm sure after my next appointment i'll know more and can maybe start to shake this scaredy cat funk. I'm torn between getting my other butt/leg/hip area surgically lined out and being down another X months. Of course being off work a bit will be nice, but there is a good chance ill be sent to Waukesha WI in April, June or October- i'd like to be running so i can get out for an experience in a new place. And San Antonio in March, which i hear is a great place to run.... I dont wanna miss running!!! (maybe i should wait for what the doc says friday before i fret too much).
Its a bit rainy out- my favorite kind of running. I think DH must have taken too much sleep med because he isn't up and its already 10. I may go alone if he don't get to movin' soon.
______
Apparently Oiselle is making these 20$ off a regular thing. I just got around to ordering a bra and shorts, hey I couldn't pass up free shipping so i had to order 2 things. Here's a code if you want to order something, then itll kick me ANOTHER code for 20$ off and continue to keep be in this retail therapy loop. but thats fine, its Oiselle- love what they stand for.

@skippygirlsmom - Wow! To be that young again. I bet she needed a recovery run today. Love the shoes.
@amymoreorless - Sometimes those are the best runs.
@kristinegift - What kind of gel do you use?
@PastorVincent - Great job on both races.1 -
@Elise4270 Aaah I need another pair of their Strider shorts, but I tried to use the link with my regular email and it told me I couldn't because I wasn't a first time customer. So sad!!
@kimlight2 It was a PowerGel strawberry banana gel. But it was pretty old (one left from a bulk order I made last fall) so it may very well have been expired.0 -

Oh that is sad!!!! Sign up with a new email I just got their trail Lekso shorts. Bet they are awesome.
ETA if that link gets used and I get a 20$ code I'll give it to you. You did introduce me to Oiselle0 -
I went out today for the first time since 7/23 on a soft wetlands trail for 2 miles. My knee didn't hurt but it was really tight. I think I ran for maybe .5 miles and the rest was walking. I tried to only run when the footing was firm and not to stony and walked the really soft, deep bits. It felt good to get out and move at a faster pace again. I completed Day 2 of the Kinetic Revolution Challenge so at least I accomplished something.
I was trying to figure out what may have caused this besides getting my foot hung up getting out of my car and the only thing I came up with is this. I was trying to slow down more so I could run farther before needing walk breaks. I realized when I do this I land harder on my heels then I normally do and my form changes a little. I am wondering if this started the issue.
I was asked by a co-worker to walk a 5k with her on 8/24 sponsored by my company. They do it once a month at our other location and it is a bit of a PITA to drive there due to parking issues there and back at my location when it is over but I said sure. It will be nice to take a mid-day walk in the park.

@Elise4270 I used a diff browser and my work email and voila!! Code popped up. Thanks!4 -
@PastorVincent you are so far from peaking- you are racing a hell of a season! And with glow sticks no less
@Elise4270 do you find Oiselle worth it? They seem so $$$ after exchange and international shipping but everyone talks them up. Am I the only one obsessed with Running Room's store brand 8.5" compression? ...I kind of hope so because clearance, haha
Got out on time this morning and found newly fallen trees (and a few leaning overhead a little too precariously) everywhere. This one took up a whole length of trail- that white bit to the right is more of it, it was like the Neverending Tree. Where's Atreyu when you need him?

@JessicaMcB is my math correct, are you really at like 77 miles for the month already? What was that about us running similar miles????? Awesome job! You really do motivate me to do more. Our races are at about thr same time, but you have so much more mileage than me.... I feel like a slacker
Side note... I had coffee after my run this morning.... there's a real urge to run another 5 to get my daily miles up to 10 and my monthly total up to 60.... but that's the coffee talking.2 -
Reporting my End of Week 1 mileage - 39.8 of 125 goal/150 Stretch goal
Attempted a LTHR test this week on Saturday's run and then used that info to set pace guidelines for Sunday's PR distance run of 12.5 miles. Felt great. Next weeks long run is basically a half marathon.
Great running by all this past week and looking forward to a safe and fun upcoming week!3 -
@JessicaMcB yes they are expensive. But I haven't found them to be any more so than comparable brands (if there are any? Nike?).
I had a problem with some others I had stinking, MPG brand. My Oiselle never stinks. And like I said- I'm all about supporting a company I like especially if I'm spending that much anyhow. I've had some things 2-3 years and they show no sign of wear, other than the printed tag wearing off. Wear what works, just sharing some sisterly Oiselle love!3 -
Hope everyone is having a great weekend!
Starting to be able to extend workouts a bit, so I'm getting excited! Also, no pain in my feet while running still, and it's not as bad in the morning/after rest.
8/1- Bike day
8/2- 4+
8/3- 1 (after a bike - first brick since 2015!)
8/4- 5
8/5- Bike day
8/6- 6

Still feeling really *kitten* today so I have designated a rest day. Exhausted, crampy and nauseous is no way to run. Guess this month is just particularly bad.0 -

You aren't a slacker, you've got almost 60 on the month so far! I have confidence+ that you will rock Duluth, don't sweat it. (Also I saw one of the hills for Whistler yesterday and nearly cried so...I need the hill miles lol)!
@Elise4270 I totally agree that you should support the businesses you enjoy! Just hard to figure if you should spring for it when you get gouged on the exchange and shipping- Nike has Canadian retailers, Oiselle doesn't as far as I can tell . Them and Sparkle Skirts man, I want to but my husband would be mad lol0 -

Thanks. I kind of needed a pick me up.. The thing about increased mileage for me is that I now am wondering if even that is enough? My 2 marathon experiences weren't great, so that's always in the back of my mind. Ultra is so different though... Lower HR, but harder hills. Ugh... so much to think about, and reading Scott Jurek's book this afternoon did not help!
Oh, on the hills at Whistler, you'll eat them like nothing. You got this!1 -

Oh I see! I have a separate account for running activities. Dh doesn't know what I spend. Although this last purchase was out of the joint account, he just bought 90$ shoes, so I'ma get something! I'll have to look at those sparkle skirts, see if I can get someone to smuggle you some!1 -
@JessicaMcB - I have seen Sparkle Skirts at some of the race expos but never tried them... May have to check them out next time! Also for compression shorts and capris I love Lucy brand Yoga Flow shorts and Pocket capris. Both have awesome pockets that fit everything I need even for a run long run or race and are so comfortable. I have no idea if they are in Canada though. Everything online is 30% off right now though.
The only issue I have had with Oiselle is the sizing (bras too big/shirts too small even when sized up) and it may be that I just don't fit their targeted standard. I will eventually get it right but it has cost me shipping both ways each time it is wrong.
I need new running shoes... my favorite Skoras are starting to come apart and made my foot sore yesterday. They are supposed to have shoes available in September and I was hoping my pair would hold out until then... now what do I do???
It is rest day and we were going to go to the dog beach but the surfing competition is apparently a 2 week/weekend event so that was a no go. So here I am between loads of laundry shopping online for Oiselle bras, Lucy shorts, running shoes and a new blender! Could be an expensive day!! Maybe I should go for a walk... or wait until it cools off later2 -
@MNLittleFinn it's a savage ski hill, but on the plus side I'm going up it rather than down so my knees stand a better chance of not destroying me lol. And you know, to quote CDR'S signage, death before DNF
Remember, Koerner programming is big into distances 50 miles and up being more about time on your feet. You have stamina, a good hills base and some ultra friends to bounce off of- Duluth is happening!
@Elise4270 haha the underground shorts railroad!
@shanaber I'm honestly not super jazzed on their actual skirts but their length shorts appeal to me big time and they're supposed to be A1 quality for women over 5'8"! Sounds like a wicked shopping day for you! Are you going Vitamix?3 -
Have had a tough week even doing what seemed easy the week before. An additional 3.5 miles yesterday, and 3.0 today, for a total of 12.27 out of 45. Worked out yesterday after my run, and now I'm wondering if squats, etc. were a bad idea. Just not able to run the distances without stopping right now. Going to take Monday off as a rest day, and see if that helps.2
-
@shanaber just ordered some Lucy brand pocket capris. Hoping they work out - it's really hard to find running pants with good pockets.
Run this morning ended up only being half my planned amount. TOM complications - I'll spare the details. Had to have my husband come get me. I'll try again Tuesday for a longer run.
So, 3.5 for me this morning.
August totals: 15.85 / 752 -
1---5.49mi/ 8.85km
3---4.23 / 6.8
5---4.55 / 7.3
6---9.14 l 14.7. Would have made the 10 if I planned better. I left the last potential 3 miles on a loop with hills and my piriformis/leg was not having it much of it. 80f/26.7c and 95% humidity. Perfect.
Total 23.41/37.76
Goal 89 miles/144 km
Upcoming races:
Oct 1 Spirit of Survival, Lawton OK. Quarter Marathon
AIM for the Cure- 5K, virual run
Dec 2- POOP trail run, Hoping for a half! Norman OK.

. . .
I had a very poor start, was just too crowded. In fact, I spent the entire 5k passing people, which shows how far back I started. There was no chip time, just gun time, so that really hurt my chances to place. I ended up 5th in my age group, but I do not know by how much yet. Once they post the times I will know more. For now I am telling myself 3rd place was in reach had they done chip time, or had I started further up in the pack.
. . .
What is cool is even a couple months ago I thought I might be peaking as a runner and was a little depressed by it. Yet I hit multiple PRs this summer, so perhaps there is a bit more speed I can get before age catches up to me. Time will tell I guess.
@PastorVincent - Good job getting 2 races run in one day! And now you know some things you didn't know before. You're faster than you thought, relative to the pack of runners in a race. And you need to line up more aggressively, because it's far more common for a 5K to use gun time than chip time. I've never seen a race that was shorter than a half marathon use chip time, unless it was big enough that it needed multiple corrals and/or waves. Even when a shorter race reports net time, gun time is typically used for awards.1
