August 2017 Running Challenge

Just realized I haven't posted any runs since the first. Maybe because they were both on the treadmill at the gym...
Today I got back outside a bit late because I had an early appointment first. I took Hobbes the Vizsla with me until it was just too hot for him. We were running on dirt but I knew he had had enough so I called my husband and had him pick him up. Hobbes was SO happy to see him. I finished up the last 4 or so miles and it was too hot for me by the time I got home. I stripped off my shoes and socks and headed straight for the pool - it felt just amazing!
I have to mention something that happened at the gym on Thursday... I was running on the treadmill in the back row of two rows of treadmills. A man came in and got on one of the treadmills in front of me and started running, not a problem right... All of a sudden he started dodging, flailing his arms and slipping down and sideways on the treadmill and looking like he was going to fall down. I thought I might need to go and get someone to help him. At that point I realized he was actually doing some kind of a marshal arts type routine dodging and boxing, he even punched the treadmill controls several times. It literally scared the crap out of me and kept startling me over and over again. People all around me were just stunned trying to figure out what he was doing.
@PastorVincent - congratulations on the race and PR!
@rusgolden - welcome back and congratulations on your PR!
@skippygirlsmom - so wish we had a Fleet Feet close by here! Probably better though that we don't! Love your new shoes!
@BruinsGal_91 - you placed - doesn't matter how many others there were in the group! Next time yes - listen to sensible you. I hope your calf recovers and feels better soon!
@Elise4270 - love that meme! we have all been in those stores with the chatty sales person who takes FOREVER checking out the person in front of you! Hope you escaped the Verizon store in time to get out for a run!!

@bonniegarbal nice running. Intervals can be really tiring!
@shanaber nice run! The martial arts guy story is hilarious. I don't ever recall shadow boxing on a TM during my Muay Thai days.... interesting...LOL0 -

I actually wear both all the time, though the cap is as much for keeping sweat out of my eyes as for shade. Great run todsy by the way. Your mileage always makes me feel lazy, despite putting in 50 miles in 5 days this week.
There isn't even that much difference in our mileage crazy #teammediocrerunners4 -
@shanaber the FF is far enough away that I don't have to pass it unless I'm going there but close enough to drive over there easily. Ok I thought you were going to say he was having a seizure or something. During our run today a guy was shadow boxing while running and thought that was weird enough ha ha

Cross posting this from my newsfeed to get more feedback:
My Nutri Ninja died... smelled like it was burning when I was making my post run smoothie breakfast spit out black stuff onto the counter and I think into my smoothie so I didn't even get to have it (my husband took it and wouldn't let me have it - I was considering it though feeling rungery as I was). I am not even sure if I have had it the Ninja a year but now I need to replace it. My daughter is telling me to just invest in a Vitamix... what do you all think?0 -

Since it was less than a year you could try calling Ninja, you may get a new one out of it.
If not, I've heard great things about vitamix. Maybe you could find one second hand. Or in my house when I want something expensive we do it as a Christmas/anniversary/birthday present2 -

I adore my mom's Blendtec. Same theory as Vitamix, but the blades are dull (no need to sharpen, no risk of cutting yourself getting stuff out) and there's no plunger thingy. Also it's a little cheaper.
She grinds her own flaxseed meal and almond butter with it.

RespectTheKitty wrote: »5.5 mile run today through the meadow portion of Busse Woods. Very cloudy and only 67F. A bit breezy as well. Not too bad for August.
The meadow was pretty empty, which meant it was just me and the five million birds that were flitting through the tall grasses. It was a very peaceful, zen run. Loved it.
Tomorrow the weather is supposed to be dry and not too hot, so it's definitely LONG RUN DAY!
August total - 19.7 / 100
It looks beautiful but where is the path? Or are you running freely through the meadow?
LOL don't I wish! No, I was taking the photo from the path.1 -
Well folks, it just didn't happen today.
I don't know what the problem was. It didn't help that I slept in really late, probably too much sleep. I went out thinking I'd have a nice run, but my energy level was just not there. I felt exhausted and a little sick to my stomach. OK, I thought... maybe it's just the First Mile Syndrome. But after mile two and I still wasn't feeling any better I decided to call it and walk home, frustrated and crying. I don't know what happened. I just didn't have anything in the tank today.
Probably doesn't help that it's the TOM for me (sorry, men) so maybe that's what was sapping my energy. I got two miles, and two more miles walking, so it's better than nothing. And I will get out there and try again tomorrow.
August total - 21.7 / 100 miles3 -
@RespectTheKitty good job getting out there. Tough runs like today are character builders. Keep up the good work!1

Was planning on taking today off, but it was 64 degree outside and the legs felt fine so I couldn't pass on it. Since my marathon last year I've only done 6+ miles a handful of times before shutting down with some minor strains last December. Actually felt pretty strong on this run and had to keep dialing it back to stay in my lower HR training zones.6 -
My day started at 3:30a.m. and we were on the river fishing by5:30. I'm sorry to report that the 5 sun perch and the catfish that I caught did not win us the *bass* tournament. Lol!
I made it to the track this evening, promising myself I'd go easy. A long day. 85 degrees. Those 6 miles were tough! BUT! I managed to do them in 1:11.!!! Previous fastest for 6 miles was 1:14! Don't know how this happened.
So 16 miles total for August so far!10 -

@wandavaughn great job on the 6 miles
@respectthekitty we all have those days, you'll get it tomorrow0 -
I would like to crash the party! I have been missing running so maybe I can live vicariously through yall for a while. I am down to walking ( or maybe waddling, but I refuse to believe that) for the time being due to pregnancy.
I set a goal of walking 20 miles in august.
8/5 - 1.89 miles13 -

@4legsRbetterthan2 - I have to wonder if your screen name is a subtle reference to being pregnant, or perhaps a George Orwell reference.
Vicarious life spectators are welcome here. Soon enough, you'll be in training for the stroller division of races. I've seen some pretty determined new parents running with strollers, and often wonder if there will be pictures for the new baby to roll his/her eyes at in 15 or 16 years.2 -

RACE REPORT
So we got there 90 minutes early by mistake. Well not really. The directions looked confusing on the web, and the address they listed was for the middle of nowhere, so we left early to give time to find the place. The first problem we hit was a classic car show in town so the roads I was expecting to use were all closed and there were cars parked everywhere making driving a bit more treacherous than it needed to be. Trusty old Garmin Windshield mounted GPS got us through it and we made it to the race way early.
We had registered late so I was figuring we would not get a shirt, but when we arrived they had shirts for us AND were giving out shirts to people who were just registering. So that was cool. The shirt is bright orange, so probably never wear it.
Eventually, we gather at the start line and they handed out glow necklaces for everyone to wear since we are starting AFTER sunset. They also lit parts of the course with Tiki torches so that was cool. Although it did make passing people a bit more treacherous and exciting.
I had a very poor start, was just too crowded. In fact, I spent the entire 5k passing people, which shows how far back I started. There was no chip time, just gun time, so that really hurt my chances to place. I ended up 5th in my age group, but I do not know by how much yet. Once they post the times I will know more. For now I am telling myself 3rd place was in reach had they done chip time, or had I started further up in the pack.
I ended up averaging an 8:01 pace which is not really representative of how hard I ran because much of the second mile my pace was under seven as I was trying to make up time on a long straight gradual downhill stretch. It was not enough to beat my time from the 5k this morning though. Of course, Howl at the Moon 5k had four times the number of hills (well four times the elevation at least) AND my watch read 3.14 miles vs the 3.01 miles of the 5k this morning. RunKeeper is calling my 25:11 of this evening's race a 5K PR, because it is not counting the 3.01 mile 5k I ran this AM as a 5K race. I decided I agree with it and will hold 25:11 as a PR until I beat it which I am sure I can.
I will withhold judgment on if I could have placed with a better start until I see the official results, but I do know I could have shaved at least a minute if not two off that time had I started better. It was just way too crowded for the start lane that we had.
What is cool is even a couple months ago I thought I might be peaking as a runner and was a little depressed by it. Yet I hit multiple PRs this summer, so perhaps there is a bit more speed I can get before age catches up to me. Time will tell I guess.

@RespectTheKitty - you might want to check this out. There are physiological reasons why you feel exhausted running during your TOM. Hang in there - your next run will likely feel better!!

@PastorVincent - great job after the 5k this morning! Next time I guess you will just need to line up near the front, especially when you are there early. Let everyone else try to pass you instead1

@MobyCarp - the name predates the kiddo. Started with my real name but decided I wanted something more anonymous. I was running on a trail that I frequently ride my horse on and had my dogs with me. Of coarse the dogs were running in circles around me and I was thinking to myself that I was probably "running" the same pace as my horse walks the trail, and it just became my new name.5

August Goal: Not die while ramping up running mileage and technicality during 100K training
Nominal mileage goal: 250 miles
Today's notes: today's run was a weird one for me. It wasn't thr distance, 5 miles, or anything like that. It was how I felt. The whole run i felt tired and sluggish. Then, when I finished and checked my stats, I was amazed. Average pace was 9:02 and average HR was 149. I was not expecting that! I was sure that I was going to end up with 11min miles and a HR in the 160s.....
.....thus might have something to do with my training load this week, it was pretty heavy and I was worn out from it, but apparently my body is adapting...
Have a Runderful day everyone!
