5.5 mile run today through the meadow portion of Busse Woods. Very cloudy and only 67F. A bit breezy as well. Not too bad for August.
The meadow was pretty empty, which meant it was just me and the five million birds that were flitting through the tall grasses. It was a very peaceful, zen run. Loved it.
Tomorrow the weather is supposed to be dry and not too hot, so it's definitely LONG RUN DAY!

I measured my calf and thigh - 38cm and 53 cm at their widest when flexing of course. I'm trying to remember why we are doing this... will go back a few pages.5

@KatieJane83 Wow, that is a high LTHR. Mine was tested in a fitness lab at 161.0

I don't quite remember either, lol, but we're pretty close! I measured 36 and 522 -
For the record, I don't have a measuring tape so I can't give you my calf and thigh measurements.
Suffice to say, they do what they're supposed to do, so I don't really care how big they are.9 -

Yeah, I think I tend to have a high hr. I still need to get a true resting hr read though, I think it's around 50. And the LTHR is just an estimate. It's based on a 10k where my avg hr for the race was 179. All this hr stuff gets tricky, lol1 -

So I have been running for a few years without any HR data. After hanging around here lately, I decided I needed the new fenix5 and chest strap HRM. I have only gotten in 2 runs and was really expecting to be told that I stay in zones 1-2 and that I don't ever get up to zone 4-5. Instead Garmin is putting almost all of my running (except for the warm up) in zone 4-5. That is just 2 runs so I know part of the issue is lack of data. My average HR was 150-155 on the runs. The shorter one was slower but with more elevation gain. Both were about 1-1.5 minutes per mile slower than my marathon pace and 2-2.5 minutes slower than my HM pace. I will continue to collect data and maybe do the lactate threshold test later, but I noticed several people posting runs in zone 2 that had similar HR. I don't put in the mileage of most on this site, but do you think Garmin is underestimating my max HR (48 year old female) or that I really am like many runners who go too fast on training runs? I felt like I was taking it pretty easy
@wishiwasarunner Here's how to set your HR settings on the Fenix 5:
http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/fenix5/EN-US/GUID-30C91919-943C-44E9-8048-901AC0881AEA.html
I've used this to set mine on my Fenix 5 with wrist HRM.
I'm 50, and my LTHR is 151, and max HR is 213, based on a 25:41 5K PB in April.1 -

Because I'm neurotic. My husband made a comment about mine. So I wondered whereabouts others were.2 -
@KatieJane83, @MobyCarp, @Orphia - Thank you for the information and help. If Garmin is basing the zones off of a max HR of 220-age, then that is definitely part of the problem. I used the watch for a 2 mile leisurely walk with the dogs and it had me in zone 2. Surely if I can run a full marathon, walking the dogs should not be my training pace. Thanks again4

Good for you! That is the right attitude, I think.

36 and 50 here. Makes me think I need to do a new set of overall measurements. I realize 10inches above knee isn't quite where I normally measure... and I'm not sure it's ever occurred to me to measure my calves.... but the thigh measurement is not nearly as big as I was expecting it to be. And if it's actually smaller, than maybe other things are too.
No running today, I was a good kid.... ok, so maybe there was lightening and it helped that.2 -

My mother will be travelling with us. We are spending a couple of days with my older sister, but my mother will be there a couple of weeks. We would like to visit the Amana Colonies, but not sure whether to take my mother or not. (She is 89 y.o. and walks without a walker, but she is a very slow walker. She refuses to exercise to improve her stamina.) I am not sure she will be able to do very much walking. Has anyone been there? Is there a lot of walking involved?
There could be a lot of walking @ereck44. I haven't been for years, and probably just drove to one or two places per trip (restaurants/food mostly). But if you want to shop around and see several places you might be in for a fair amount of walking. If there are a few things you want to hit, you could drive from one to the other. Here's an interactive map if it helps:

Thanks for the link. Wow! It does look like quite a lot of walking. I will talk to her about it. She is in pretty good shape for her age and for really avoiding exercise like the plague.0 -
I can't believe it. August 1 and I am 7 pages behind.
My goal for this month is 60 and I am going to get it this time.
August 4....Another late start, but hadn't planned to run. I decided last minute to run a short one. I wish that I had more time....nice cool weather...66 degrees with cool wind. I ran a little faster than usual but still stayed in the zone for all but 8 minutes. Sprinted the last quarter of a mile.
We should be in Iowa on Sunday.
August 1....6 miles.
August 2....8 miles.
August 4...4 miles.
total....18 miles
goal--60 miles

Well, shoot it is 57 degrees. Hrm. I was planning to run to the 5k this morning, it is only 1.5 miles or so from my door as the runner runs. Should easily make it and not even take that much longer than driving, but I will get sweaty and then stand around in wet clothes waiting for the race to start. That seems sub optimal.4

@PastorVincent sounds like an easy bike ride if your looking for options.1

We are only an hour before the start but we are the first runners to arrive. Odd.3

How about a brisk walk instead?
I missed my run today. I stayed up too late getting ready for sailing this weekend and decided I needed sleep more than running this morning.
Tomorrow, however, I get to run, with my daughter, along the lake! Unless it's raining. Then she'll bail out but I'll still go. Or unless she's too tired. She's not a morning person.

Stayed up too late last night. Woke up a million times with perimenopausal night sweats. Had an anxiety dream for the first time in forever. Got out of bed an hour later than I'd intended. Today is apparently peak DOMS from Thursday's weights class. But the weather said this morning was cool, dry, and breezy, and that tomorrow morning was nothing but thunderstorms.
At two miles, I was still having to adjust my form for this little niggle or that, despite being remarkably slow. At 2.5 miles, I gave up and switched from music to metronome, synched up my legs, and trotted along easily thereafter. The moral there is pretty obvious. Decided to go for four miles, because that's just to the gate at the trail entrance, right? By the time I pulled out my phone to see why I hadn't gotten my four mile notification, and remembered that four miles is actually to the gate at the trail entrance *after you pass it, go to the street, and come back*, I was already mentally wanting the four. Strava gave me my announcement, I went a little further because this is not my first rodeo, then walked a long slow cooldown. Need to foam roll at yoga today, because either the DOMS or the initial slow cadence left me with some annoying asymmetrical aches. Back at the car, I checked my splits. 1, 2, 3, 0.9. Kitten you, Strava. The total still says four, so I'm calling it four.5 -
You know you're a runner when....
...so, I barely EVER remember what I dreamed about when I wake up in the morning. But this morning I quite vividly remember that I dreamed I was in some local, dreamed up running store, in a town where I was doing a race, and I got really excited because they had the Brooks Glycerin 14s on sale. I very specifically remember they had my size, just not in wide, but they were only $60-something so I was willing to get them. I just had to literally run back to my room (which seemed more like a dorm?? Geez dreams are weird) to get my credit card because they were closing in 5 minutes, and apparently closing for good
I think the moral of the story is that I'm kinda stressing over the changes I've heard about in the new Glycerin 15s, b/c these have been my go to shoes since I started running several years ago, lol.8 -

RACE REPORT
So we got there about 7am for 8am start and not only were we the first runners, but the course was not ready yet. Eventually got our shoe chips, and shirt and sat around for a while until they were organized. I did a few laps around the parking lot just to loosen up. Did not check pace, but probably was like 12 min or something. Way easy.
Temp was 59 degrees with 83% humidity and dew put of 53F at race start. Pretty good compared to the season so far.
The race had a small starting gate that every one bottle necked through, maybe 2 runners wide, but there was no gun time. It was chip time only race so I hung back and started much later in the pack than I would have normally. Once through the starting gate, I tried to find some one in bright colors to pace off of. Took around 1/2 mile or so to find someone, but I eventually did. Held a steady just under 8 mins for most of the 1-minute splits. Once or twice got as slow as 8:20, but with the 1-minute call outs, I could correct quickly.
The first 1/2 mile though there was this little kid (in the under 14 division) that was running menace. His arms were flailing all over and his feet were coming up so high that he was kicking his own butt. He kept zig zagging all over, and it was hard to maintain my pace. I knew if I just waited he would burn out, and I was correct. Some place around 1/2 to 3/4th of a mile he vanished. Good.
I had my Apple Watch Series 2 with RunKeeper calling out my pace and hr every one minute, and tapping my wrist every mile. I was running with out my normal audio book. I had set my goal of a 8 min pace and really wanted to focus on doing that.
About 1.25 miles in there is a double back and the races only water stop (which I skipped, it's only a 5k people, sheesh), and I got to see all the people behind me as I ran back. Saw an older looking gentleman with one foot and a Marines t-shirt running as hard as he could. Cheered him as we passed. I hope that was okay. Never sure if that is good or embarrassing, but man proud of his effort!
Crossed two-mile mark, avg pace was 7:52. Looking good. Body finally loosening up and I pick up the pace a bit. By 2.5 miles I am running under a 7:30 pace. Still holding on feeling okay, came around the final bend saw the finish gate and thought to kick but my legs just did not want to do it, so ended up holding my pace through the finish line.
Runkeeper has me at 23:18 finish, 7:41 pace. The chip pace was 7:33, but forget the chip finish time, so going to stick with what I recorded until times are posted. Not good enough by THREE MUNITES to place in age group, but that is okay. PR for me, and I accomplished a sub 8 pace!
Another 5k tonight, maybe slower runners will show up to that one and I can place?
The local high school sent their cross country team to the race, and they dominated everyone.
Strava reports
19% Z3
56% Z4
25% Z5
So I think that means I ran pretty hard
Now shower, laundry, and get ready for next 5k race at 8:30 pm13 -
8/1: 7 miles of Track Tuesday

Easy day today with my running group, long run tomorrow. Started at 7 right after a few hours of rain storms, so the humidity was nuts.
Also calf measurements! Calf: 40 cm at widest point / Quad 10 cm above the knee: 46 cm. My calf to quad ratio is quite slim, the calves themselves are not

Really beautiful morning today. Just 63 degrees. Humid, but a nice breeze. Felt so good not to have the oppressive heat fora while. I did the first half of my long run with a guy I hadn't met before, so lots of get to know you conversation kept things interesting. Second half I joined up with another friend. The pace was a lot slower on the second half but I wasn't bothered as I was just looking for total time on my feet today and not any particular distance. I was happy to achieve 10 miles though.
Eight weeks to my half, feeling pretty good about where I am overall.
Upcoming races:
10/1 Wineglass Half Marathon, Corning NY

Well I went to bed early last night in anticipation of a long run early this morning, but I woke up at 1:50am and kept waking up until my alarm went off at 4:30. Oh well, I felt pretty good once I got up. I was out the door by 5:19am and it was a muggy 77 degrees. Oh well again. At mile 3 I started to feel a bit horrified that I still had 9 miles to go! But I kept plugging away and suddenly it was over. Wow. 12 miles and I didn't feel bad at all!
So I use my Garmin Forerunner 235 and Runkeeper on my iPhone 7. I start them at the same time and by mile 12 Runkeeper is .35 miles ahead of my Garmin. I'm not sure which one is more accurate??? I want to say Garmin, but I imagine the GPS in my phone is pretty accurate?
