@PastorVincent I'd definitely follow up with a PT as suggested.
In my experience, tight psoas, med glute, TFL, IT band, ect. can give the illusion of shorter leg. According to http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=a00259 32% of us have a discrepancy.
If perhaps there is an issue with muscle development on one side, it could be neurological. Or maybe your achilles are different lengths, which can affect calf shape and size. Again, see a licensed PT for answers. I have nerve damage on my left, and I have zero difference in muscle mass from r to l legs by Dexa scan. And I still have a limp.0 -

I actually had them switched on for the last couple of days after the latest update, but I have a hard time taking them serious. This morning after my bike commute to work the app told me that my speed was "slower than the average women my age cycling medium distances" or something like that, and I got annoyed - it's mostly uphill, watch, so shut up! On the other hand, it also told me I have the fitness age of a "fit 20 year old" - haha, in my dreams I might watch it a bit longer, just for amusement, but I don't think it's anything anyone should take serious.

Serious topic time. Four different sexual assaults on female runners have happened in my area in the past few months. They caught one guy but the other cases are still unsolved. After the 4th one happened yesterday, the police decided to hosted a "Run with a Cop" event in the park this morning. Unfortunately, the run didn't start until 7 am. Way to late for my work schedule. They are ramping up patrols of the greenbelts but it is still making me nervous.
I started running without headphones last week. I am enjoying it more than I thought I would. It is kind-of peaceful and meditative. After seeing yesterdays news, I also switched up my running route to well lit and well traveled roads. It was a pain having to deal with traffic and crosswalks but it is probably safer.
I am thinking of purchasing something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Pepper-Spray-Runners-Reflective-Protection/dp/B007RCIN1M/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1506611007&sr=8-8&keywords=runner+protection. It looks a little bulky. Anyone have any experience with a product like this?
I have no experience, but I think something like that link is a great idea. A female coworker of mine actually carries bear spray with her. She figures if it can stop a raging bear, then a jerk in the park will not be an issue.
With pepper spray though, wind is a real problem. So need to keep that in mind. Buy a couple and practice with them. If you spray your own face, you will hate it, but still better to do that at home then while being attacked.
Obviously running in a pack is also great, when it can be arranged.1 -
@amymoreorless I'm so sorry to hear about the assaults just awful. I run with pepper spray but it's like this
https://www.amazon.com/SABRE-RED-Pepper-Gel-Spray/dp/B002E6RERU/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1506613087&sr=1-1&keywords=handheld+pepper+spray
It's like a water bottle strap. It took me 1 run to get used to it. I never pay any attention to it at all. The difference I see here is the one I have your hand can be around the canister and your thumb in the trigger in less than a second. Please stay safe.1 -
@amymoreorless Any deterent is better than none. It seems like a sutuation for now where to protect yourself you could have to give in and run when it's safe.
Today's run 8.1 miles at strangley enough an easy 8:19/mile pace. The humidity finally broke around here and even though the temperature was close to 70, there was a nice breeze. I ran with the concept of running easy but good. I read the MacMillian piece about negative splits and I am trying to consider how to use the strategy for my Marathon on the 14th. If I truly believe that close to 4 hours is my time then I should run 9s through the first part of the race and pick it up after. Some part of me wants to run like I did this morning and see how it goes. It did not feel too aggressive and maybe it's not.

I know it's my fault because I've stayed up too late the last two nights binge watching Big Little Lies and Game of Thrones.3 -

Only five runs left until the marathon! Also I'm only 0.14 miles away from my goal for the month; I have 3 planned for this afternoon, and then 8 for tomorrow so it looks like I'll be over goal bit!

I know it's my fault because I've stayed up too late the last two nights binge watching Big Little Lies and Game of Thrones.
I had a hard time getting out of bed for my run this morning, too. I blame the late night watching Designated Survivor for the sleepiness. But I do love me some Kiefer! Will probably have trouble Saturday, too, because of Blue Bloods. Sigh.

Sorry y'all, life has been busy and haven't been staying on top of the thread much the past couple weeks. I noticed that I am 12 pages behind... I'm thinking it will be October before I can catch back up... At least I've been making time for running, so there's that...

I hit my goal this month, even with taking two days off last week. I'm thinking of bumping up to either 50 or 60 miles next month, depending on if the weather finally figures out that it's fall. I had a nice easy 3.56 mile run. I'm trying not to compare myself to the other rockstars on the thread, especially since I'm still very much a novice runner. I'm still having a tough time believing that I'm choosing to run 3+ miles several times a week, when a few months ago I could barely handle the one-minute intervals in C25K.
In non-running news, I got accepted into the Disney College Program for the Spring. I now have 48 hours to decide if I want to uproot my life and move to Orlando. No pressure.

It has been raining a lot this week. I missed my run yesterday so today I decided to run at lunch since it was not raining and it is supposed to be raining the rest of today and I was worried I would miss my opportunity if I waited until after work. I managed to get 3.1 miles in at my 5k best pace. Strava gave me a PR at 32:17. My chip time PR from a 5k race that I am trying to beat on 10/7 is 32:10. My goals for the race are to get a PR and hopefully to run the 5k in under 30 minutes. I feel like I really have a shot. I felt great after my run today. I am one of the slower runners on here and an average pace of 10:25 is definitely something I'm proud of. I'm only 2.9 miles from my monthly goal so hopefully I will be able to reach it. Surely I can find a window of no rain tomorrow or Saturday. And I might just run in the rain. Especially if I can come home afterward and lounge around the house in my pj's. I'm not going to run in the rain when I have to be back at work. I'm not that dedicated. LOL.
@amymoreorless That is so scary. I think the pepper spray is a good idea. I've been thinking about getting some myself (more for dogs than people). I think that the one that @skippygirlsmom has looks really good. You don't want to have to worry about being able to access it when you need it.
@zdyb23456 I've been staying up too late lately too catching up on GOT. I thought I might be the only person who hadn't seen it yet.
@ navygrrl Congrats on the Disney College Program. And on meeting your goal. I started out here in April with a 40 mile goal and I've been bumping it up by about 5 miles each time.

Hi everyone.
Things have not been going well. My anxiety and depression have been giving me a really hard time. It's been really tough to get up the motivation to run or even walk. I'm pretty much burned out.
I've run twice this week so far, and I have the opportunity to do a long run on Saturday, which I might try. I've got 85 miles so far this month. With my motivation waning as much as it is, I might not make it to my usual 100 miles.
I've got a doctor appointment next Tuesday and I'm hoping we can discuss changing my meds because the ones I'm on now are obviously not working.
In the meantime, I could use some good thoughts/vibes/prayers/whatever.6 -
@RespectTheKitty count me in as one sending prayers and good wished. You are a good person who deserves a break. I suspect there are many here and around you who truly appreciate the good you bring to us all.1

Fall arrived (again) overnight so that's a huge relief. Now I'm worried about wanting long sleeves at the beginning of my race on Sunday. But I won't want them for long so better just tough it out.
Ran after work and it was okay, but my cold is still here and running seemed to kick it up a notch. Going to try some cold meds overnight and see if I can knock it out. I may have to stuff kleenexes up my nose (or use those long sleeves for a second purpose).

@RespectTheKitty done. My wife struggles with that as well.youre still doing great though, remember that1
-
@RespectTheKitty Sending lots of mojo. And hoping that you and your doctor can find something that really works for you.1
-
@RespectTheKitty Sorry to hear you are dealing with this. I hope the docs have some good answers for you. You are being smart going in like that. Too many people, I know just try to "deal" and end up suffering. I will pray for you.1
-
@JessicaMcB Congrats on the 400; that's quite some feat!
@RespectTheKitty Sorry to hear that things haven't been going so well lately.
@amymoreorless Run safe out there.
Today was a duplicate of yesterday...exact same route, ergo exact same mileage. Except Garmin reported my HR as really really high, which was a surprise given that I didn't feel it. I suspect cadence lock was the issue somewhere, but to be safe, tomorrow's 'long' run is going to be done all easy. Still eating lots of fruit and tuna, and trying to cut back on sugary treats as much as possible.
In other news, it looks like autumn's arrived. Again.

@amymoreorless Be safe out there! Whatever you purchase for safe running - I hope you don't ever have to use it.
Today's run = 8 miles on campus
Monthly goal = 135
Total = 116
I will definitely be short of my goal this month, but that's all good. October will have 31 days, so I'll catch my goal then.
By the way, if anyone got a strange follow request on Strava from Val Lochman - that would be me

Love to you @RespectTheKitty ! I had a really dark meds adjustment period with my OCD over the winter and my running took the hit, athletics and mental illness are a bizarre marriage sometimes. Know that there will always be another mile ahead for you to run when you are ready but there will never be another you- be kind to yourself
Thanks @garygse ! My non-running husband was less impressed and asked me why I didn't push for 5002 -

So.... on Tuesday at my track workout, my right calf tightened up suddenly on the straightaway of my first mile repeat. Immediately I stopped and stretched a bit, tested it, but ultimately after two easy laps around the track, scrapped the workout entirely. I've been babying the calf for a couple days and I thought I would test it out tonight at my group run. It felt a bit tight, but nothing that wouldn't loosen up, then exactly a mile in, I thought someone had kicked an acorn at me. However one more step on my right leg later, I realized that had been an internal sensation in my calf -- a pop, no pain, yet definitely not good. I called it quits and limped back. I'm now icing, compressing, resting, etc. and scrambling to try to get in to see a sports doc.
This really, really sucks. I'm not even that upset that I'm unlikely to be running a marathon in 9 days. It's more of the fact that we are FINALLY getting good fall weather and October is my FAVORITE running weather month, and it's possible that I'll be sidelined for a good chunk of it. My running group buddies are telling me to rest, the hay is in the barn, you're tapering anyway... and I'm hoping they are right that 4-8 days of rest will mean I can complete this marathon next weekend. But more so I hope it means I'll be able to spend October running in crisp fall air and stomping on dead leaves, not sitting around morosely on a Saturday morning long run-less.
But yeah... this is why I haven't even checked the forum in days. I was hoping to come in today with good news, and instead my impatience and need to "test it out" means I'm reporting back injury.

9/1 - Rest day
9/2 - 13.18 miles. Very slow, mostly walking. Really struggled with low BG throughout entire run. Depleted electrolytes and had cramping towards end and afterwards.
9/3 - Rest
9/4 - Cross train - hiked 10 miles.
9/5 - Unplanned rest day - seems like I might have sprained left ankle.

9/7 - Unplanned rest - trying to rest ankle for HM and spare electrolytes

9/14 - 5 miles treadmill, low BG issues and generally not good
9/15 - Rest
9/16A - 9.12 miles fasting, with electrolytes and yohimbine. Good BG's, indicating yohimbine is working to release stubborn fat, but slow run. Plan was for 18 miles today. Stopped for rain and because pace was so slow.
9/16B - 5.01 miles - did not get to 18 today, but stopped because it was dark and I was worn out
9/17 - Rest

9/22 - Rest
9/23 - Unplanned rest (BG Issues)
9/24 - 18.01 miles; everything went really well until about mile 12 when I started to feel muscle pains of electrolyte depletion. Swung by home and got 2 electrolyte tablets, but it wasn't enough. Walked most of the last 2 miles.
9/25 - Rest
9/26 - 5.0 miles treadmill before weight lifting
9/27 - 5.70 miles 'race pace' (actually was faster than race pace… yea!)
9/28 - 5.01 miles treadmill before weight lifting
I'm so far behind that I'm not going to reach goal

@HonuNui OUCH!!!!
stigmata appearing through running? that's new!
I have a question for you - please don't answer if you don't feel able, but with the Aim at Melanoma run coming up soon, I wonder if you could tell us a little about Steve. You post some pictures and you can see kindness shining through his smile. I want to be able to tell people I'm running a virtual race for a great guy, and it would be nice to know a bit more about him. *hugs*2 -

Weather... 2 days ago it was in the 90s with 100% humidity.... currently it is in the 40's (still nearly 100% humidity though). Some times I get dizzy trying to keep up with what to wear!0
