9/17 5m easy
September total: 40.2 of 65 miles
2017 Goal: Beat 20-yr-old PR (29:32)
*Oct: Apple Harvest 5k
*Nov: Movember 5k
*Dec: Mitten Run 5k
I opted for a treadmill run. Didn't relish running 5 (which is long for me) in the mountainous mountains near our hotel. And our daughter isn't feeling well so I wanted to stay close.
Listened to a podcast called “That Triathlon Show”. Good stuff.
I'm now collecting my cold-ravaged daughter to go hang out in the hot tub and sauna. Should feel pretty good.2 -
Since I enjoy reading you guys so much and, I learn from them, here’s my stab at a race report. Bear with me, I’m not much of a writer and my thoughts tend to tangent and twist.
The Mulberry Island Half has been going on for 36 years. It’s a flat fast course (course record 1:06:50) that takes place on Fort Eustis Army base. It’s a Super Grand Prix event so some of the better runners from the seven cities along with various military personnel stationed here run in it. The temperature at the start of the race (7:45a EST) was 70F/ 21C with humidity at 85%. In an hour it was 80F/ 29C at 91% humidity.
For this race my goal was to finish it un-injured. I knew I didn’t stand a chance of placing in my age group. I used it as my long distance run for marathon training. Technically I should have run 17 miles but, I rationalized to myself since I’m running 13 at a faster pace, I was alright with that.
I decided to bike up to the race since it wasn’t that far (6 miles). Also, from past experience the line to get your car checked before going on base can get backed up. It helps I have a CAC card too. When I got up to the base at 6:30, I was right about the car check line. They ended up starting the race 15 minutes later (7:45) because there were so many cars being checked. I get up to pre-registration around 7:00 and all goes good. I warm up doing dynamic stretches (thanks @Stoshew71 for the video you posted before). I didn’t do any warm-up running. I decided to use the first 3 miles as a warm-up.
So the race starts and I’m comfortable in the middle of the pack (219 runners). The first 2 miles my buddy Winston ran with me. Then before leaving me he got I Want it that Way by The Backstreet Boys stuck in my head (the whole damn race!). It’s a long story. I think this was his mental tactic to throw me off. Lol. After 5 miles of keeping my pace easy and, various renditions of said song, I started to increase my pace. It was getting hot and I was sweating a lot. I stopped to get water around mile 6 and dump another on my head, ahh. All was going pretty good. I was slowly catching other runners and those that the weather was really affecting/ injured. Right at the mile 9 sign, I get a sharp pain in the top of my left foot and lower outside shin. I take a couple of hops and ease my pace. After several steps it feels a little better. I start doing an exaggerated flippy back kick to get it to fully release. I was 95% sure this was a muscle cramp due to the dehydration and, I knew there was a Gatorade stop at 10. So I get to 10 and drink 4 cups of the weakest “Gatorade” aka orange water. I start feeling better around mile 12 and decide I want to get this over with. I finished pretty strong but still felt my left foot a little when I would stand for a bit. I ended up finishing 1:45:56, 35/187 OA, 8/18 AG. I was happy because my previous HM PR was 2:03:45 and I woke up this morning feeling good. I’m going to go for a little recovery run later today to see how everything feels. An additional note to this race was that I forgot to apply Vaseline to my sensitive areas. I didn’t feel the chaffing until after the race when the sweat was starting to dry (salt) and especially during the shower.
Sidenote: my friend Winston finished 1:43:41, 30 OA, 5 same AG after being out till 2a drinking and singing karaoke that morning. That made me feel like I could’ve pushed myself a little more, oh well. Sorry, I forgot to take any pics.
Like most of us crazies, I signed up for a few more HM and a marathon for next year, right after. I hope everyone’s having good runs and healing fast! Come on Fall, I know you’re out there!!

@sarahthes Good luck in your 10K next weekend. I ran my first on Aug 26. I am sure you will do well and whatever time you post will be a PB and something for you to shoot for in the future. From seeing the progress you've made I will be surprised if you are not training for a HM in the near future.4 -

Total 101.39 of 180 Miles
Ended up taking Thursday off then getting up at 4am Friday to get my 7 miles in. Yesterday was just a short recovery and today was my first long run since October of last year. It was cooler this morning but humidity was 100%. It rained lightly for about the first 45 minutes then once the sun came up it was steamy. Actually fogged my glasses a few times. Ended the week with a bit over 44 miles for the 2nd week in a row. I'm getting close to the starting work for the marathon plan, but need to start adding some more miles to a few of my weekly runs and get them to 10-11 miles, and I'd really like to be comfortable with a 17-18mile long run. Today's run wasn't really much of a stress on the body or legs, but my pace is still about 50-60 seconds off what I'd like to be doing them at. I'm still holding back quite a bit because i know there is a big difference in 44 miles a week and 55 miles a week. First official training run is in December so i've got plenty of time to get there.4 -

Today's run was a slow, hot, suckfest. I was not feeling it the whole time and it was a struggle just to finish my planned 7 miles. I did though, and I feel really good about that. Yesterday's run was so awesome, I guess I couldn't expect today's to be good too. I felt like I was running in slow motion. I am really ready to be done with the heat.
It sound like there were lots of good races this weekend. Congrats to all who made it through, who got PRs, and who got AG wins.

@ctlaws44 great job! Congrats!1

Love your race report @juliet3455 ! You run the most interesting trail races. If Jaja in Ponoka opens to public registration this year you should do it- faux Barkley fun!
@sarahthes I am admittedly biased since its local but Edson's Eddie's Half is really nice if you are looking for a combo of road, non-technical and technical trail. I've heard really good things about the Millarville Half as well (they have clay medals!) but halves outside of Eddie's won't be my priority distance for the next several years so I can't speak to the course. I know you are already set for Edmonton 2018 as a 10k but its an awesome course for the half, that section was the fastest part of the full for me haha
@MNLittleFinn damn that alarm! Get what you can!
I got out with the intention of doing a quick 20, my piriformis immediately had other plans and I was hurting. Decided to stick it out for a bit of speedwork since something is better than nothing, somehow managed to PR my 5k- might be able to get that sub 20 5k this year afterall! Hoping my hip behaves much better tomorrow because I don't have time for these shenanigans

@rusgolden Great race, and congrats on the 10K PR; awesomely done!

@RunsOnEspresso I have a TomTom, but I haven't come across "fitness age" or "points" yet. But then, I don't use the phone app a lot; usually I connect the watch to the PC to sync and charge, and on the mysports website I didn't see anything like that either. Maybe I'll try playing with the phone tomorrow to see if I'm getting fitness points too.
@PastorVincent @ariceroni @seanevan10@kristinegift and anyone else mentioning donuts in the last few pages: I must be missing something here! I ate donuts for the first time in my live this summer on vacation in Canada, and was really disappointed. Everyone always seems so excited about them... I tried twice, once a maple donut and the second time a chocolat donut, but both were so awefully sweet that I only took a singe bite and then tried to foist them upon my sister. It worked for the maple one; the "chocolat"* donut we threw away in the end (*it looked like chocolat, but didn't taste like real chocolat at all). I like cake, and I like chocolat, but there was no way I was gonna eat that. Or maybe we just got unlucky and came across the worst donuts around, and usually they taste better?
@hanlonsk Yes, that's brilliant that you can increase your running distance now. Even if it's slowly, every little increase is great!
@KatieJane83 I second the yay for contact lenses! Glasses are so annoying. They fog up in winter, you can't see anything when it rains... Sometimes I actually run with glasses instead of contact lenses, but the last time I did it rained so heavily that I couldn't see a thing. I had to take them off - which ment everything was really blurry, but better blurry trees and people than seeing nothing more than the rain drops on the glasses...
@juliet3455 That obstacle race sounds like intense fun. Love the water slide
@JessicaMcB That 80+km training run... just WOW! You are awesome!
@BruinsGal_91 Great race, and congratulations on the age group placement
@ariceroni great job on the 20miler today! I'm sure on race day you will have cooler temperatures. After training in the heat all summer, the marathon will feel probably feel really easy then!
@NikolaosKey Congratulations on the great race, awesome time!
@cburke8909 20 miles on tired legs on a humid day are a lot. Don't worry about the pace of today's run, you'll do great in the race after your training.
@cameronheel Congratulations on the age group win, great race
@4leighbee Welcome back!
@sarahthes Hal Higdon also has 15km training plans, maybe that could be the next step after a 10km plan? There's three different levels, if the Intermediate one is too advanced you could mabye start in the middle of the Novice plan.

My knee is finally feeling a lot better
Saturday there was still some discomfort, but only a little bit. Still, I decided to listen to common sense and DNS the "half marathon by night" I was going to run that evening, and go to a friend's house warming party instead. So I just headed out for a short run, taking my wallet with me to buy some eggs on the way home to bake a cake for the party. When I reached the village centre I remembered that there was a large pottery market this weekend. I paused my watch for about 10 minutes, and in that time managed to find a Christmas present for my mother - a cut plate with a cat picture that can either be used as a trivet or hung on a wall. Of course, that ment I had to run the remaining distance carrying a bag with a fragile pottery object with me. And after the stop at the supermarket, I had not only the box of eggs to deal with, but I also found a potted plant that fit really well as a present for my friends new appartment. So the last part of my run was an awkward shuffle with a shopping bag in one hand and a plant under the other arm
This morning I noticed that my knee doesn't even hurt anymore when I walk down stairs. The bruising has faded, and while there are still some scabs, I decided it's healed enough to try a bit of speed work. I set my watch to beep every 200m, and set out to do 10x400m intervals. It went really well - at least pace-wise. I was listening to a new ZombiesRun mission and was distracted enough that I didn't pay 100% attention to when I had to speed up and slow down. That left me with only 7x400m, in addition two longer and one shorter intervals. Ah well, I'm sure "3x400, 600, 400, 700, 400, 200, 2x400" is a great workout too.
62.5 km of 150km for September until now; I don't think I'll make my goal. That'll hopefully teach me not to fall on my knees in the future!7 -
@rusgolden congrats for the PR!2
-
@_nikkiwolf_ yes, I was very excited. Because really with as much weight lifting as I've been doing during my running ban, and the not running bit, 1 mile sometimes was barely enough to work the kinks out and actually feel like things were moving alright, and then I had to stop. Not that mile and a half is a lot better, but it at least feels a bit more productive.0

I'm sure a running entrepreneur can market this as a new style of race for those of use who aren't ready for a Tough Mudder or Spartan race.
Glad you're healing well.4 -
September's Goal - goal of 160 and stretch of 180.
Week 1 update: 21.5
Week 2 update: 34.7
Week 3 update: 37.2 (mtd: 103.4)
Had a series of easy and scenic runs while traveling during the course of the week in Lake Tahoe while coming off last Sunday's HM. At home, week ended with warmer, summer like weather - which clearly showed me how much I enjoy the cool mornings in the fall. This week should have me running slightly over 40 miles to get closer to this months goal.
Enjoy the week of running and stay healthy! Cheers!2 -
9/2: 2.6
9/3: 2.2
9/5: 4.0
9/9: 4.3
9/11: 3.5
9/13: 4.0
9/16: 4.3
9/17: 2.0
Total 26.9 / 50.0
My timing was perfect: I reached the turnaround right as it started to sprinkle, was almost back to the car before I saw lightning, and was in the car before it started raining hard.
Apparently the key to adding a day is to slow way down. 13:45 yesterday and 13:30 today, and I feel like I could go out again right now.4
