September 2017 Running Challenge

September was probably the worst mileage month in a long time. But having learned to stop before a pain turns into injury is an achievement. My foot is still tight in the mornings, so I do anticipate needing to ease into October mileage. The hip is what it is. If it hurts, I'll just let it. That's something my doc is going to have to address. Yoga/stretching/hot/cold/PT strengthening exercises are going to have to become a bit more regular. And the pool is oh so close to being open... Ohhh fishy fishy!
I'm packing up this morning to head to Lawton Oklahoma for the Quarter Marathon. I had hoped it to not only be a comeback run, but actually match my pre surgery 10k PR, 1:00:52. But I think I'll just try to make my best training time of 1:15... and enjoy the race. Should be 57°F/14C at the start. So I'll have to help moving to stay warm. (57 is cold when your sorta use to 90+).
I just realized I don't have any shoes to wear.... *kitten*. How does that happen? Trail training, no good road shoes. KTT tape may be the answer.
Great month everyone!
@HonuNui Posting our S.P.A.M race photo is an excellent idea
@skippygirlsmom That is an odd injury. Poor Skip.
Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.2 -

Nominal Mileage goal: 200 miles.
Elevation goal: 15000ft
Today's notes: Got up. I wanted 20+ today, when I was planning, but my wife got the opportunity to get some OT this weekend, so my cutoff became 0900 for time. I ended up with 16.5 miles and 3200 feet elevation. I could have gotten in probably another mile or 2 before my time cut off, but decided that actually seeing my wife for more than 5 seconds was a better option. Legs feel good, so I'm looking at a double this weekend, hopefully get 10 miles in tomorrow to start October.
Have a Runderful day all!
2017 Races Scheduled

10/21 Wild Duluth 100k
11/23- TBD 5k Turkey3 -
9/1 - Rest day
9/2 - 13.18 miles. Very slow, mostly walking. Really struggled with low BG throughout entire run. Depleted electrolytes and had cramping towards end and afterwards.
9/3 - Rest
9/4 - Cross train - hiked 10 miles.
9/5 - Unplanned rest day - seems like I might have sprained left ankle.
9/6 - 6.34 miles (plan was for 8, but trying to be easy on ankle ahead of HM on 9/9)
9/7 - Unplanned rest - trying to rest ankle for HM and spare electrolytes
9/8 - Rest
9/9 - 12.74 Wabash Trace HM 2:02:08 (we all took a wrong turn shortly after start, causing the short distance)
9/10 - Rest
9/11 - Rest
9/12 - 5 miles treadmill intervals
9/13 - 8.04 miles
9/14 - 5 miles treadmill, low BG issues and generally not good
9/15 - Rest
9/16A - 9.12 miles fasting, with electrolytes and yohimbine. Good BG's, indicating yohimbine is working to release stubborn fat, but slow run. Plan was for 18 miles today. Stopped for rain and because pace was so slow.
9/16B - 5.01 miles - did not get to 18 today, but stopped because it was dark and I was worn out
9/17 - Rest
9/18 - Rest
9/19 - 5.0 miles treadmill before weight lifting
9/20 - Unplanned rest day. BG's high in the afternoon and I'm exhausted so going to bed early.
9/21 - 5.0 miles treadmill before weight lifting
9/22 - Rest
9/23 - Unplanned rest (BG Issues)
9/24 - 18.01 miles; everything went really well until about mile 12 when I started to feel muscle pains of electrolyte depletion. Swung by home and got 2 electrolyte tablets, but it wasn't enough. Walked most of the last 2 miles.
9/25 - Rest
9/26 - 5.0 miles treadmill before weight lifting
9/27 - 5.70 miles 'race pace' (actually was faster than race pace… yea!)
9/28 - 5.01 miles treadmill before weight lifting
9/29 - Rest
9/30 - 20.05 miles. Pace was really good at first - even better than expected for race. However, the last 5-6 miles were really slow. Struggled with low BG, took 3 gluose tablets. Unfortunately, no CGM and I didn't feel it. Good thing I stopped and tested every 5 miles, because I was 49 mg/dl at mile 15. I have 1 CGM left and I'm not going to put it on until either I get the next shipment or until time for the race. I am going to switch registration to the marathon, though. The CGM shipment should have arrived by now. I had a voicemail yesterday from the company and have been playing phone tag. Someone on Facebook said the factory is in Puerto Rico, so I'm hoping that isn't true. Will see...
Upcoming Races:
9/9/17 - Wabash Trace HM
10/21/17 - Oregon Trail Run marathon2 -
Well.. I tried for my mile. At about .4 I still just wasn't into it. Which meant I was not paying attention to, nor correcting form. Which meant things started to express their displeasure in my carelessness. So, discretion became valor at about 3/4 of a mile. And I stopped. I was at first very frustrated with being so close to a measly goal and still missing. But then I remembered none of my runs at PT have been counted. .
So, I made my darn 10 miles... by the skin of my teeth, but I made it!!!5 -
Closing out September a bit above my goal of 600k/375mi at 705k/440mi. Feeling like I got in the miles I needed to be confident in my ability to hit Whistler hard in two weeks (TWO WEEKS!).

Well I finished September on a high. I had a 5k race this morning in absolutely vile weather. Torrential rain and wind are not my favourite running conditions. And not improved when a passing UPS truck drove through a large puddle and completely soaked me (I thought I was already pretty wet, but he decided to finish the job).
My time wasn't my best, but it was under 30 minutes and I won my age-group - so all in all, a pretty good morning.

Today's notes – After yesterday's scare, this morning my ankle felt good enough to run easy. So I went off to pace 5 or 8 miles at 8:00 per mile. Turned out that no one showed up needing a 7:30, 8:00, or 8:30 pace; so the four pace leaders (one for each of those paces, plus the sub who fills in for whichever regular can't make it) took off together, belatedly joined by a familiar runner who belongs in the 9:00 pace group but aspires to be faster.
I basically didn't pace the run. I let the regular 8:30 pacer (who also paces 8:00 as needed) and the sub lead the way, while I hung back with the 7:30 guy. Paid attention to how my newish Hoka Clifton's felt with Superfeet Blue inserts; they are an improvement over the Saucony Kinvaras for the hard, uneven sidewalks the route forced us onto. I can still tell that asphalt is softer, but the difference isn't as stark as when I'm in the light weight Kinvaras.
The first loop was a bit short, and I was mildly amused to see 4 pacers take 4 different paths of OCD in the parking lot to get 5 miles. The sub asked me how I felt, given my injury/comeback status. I told him, "I feel like I could run another 3 miles, but I used up my quota of Stupid on Thursday evening." So the sub and the regular 8:30 went out with the wannabe for the last 3 miles, and I did my stretching. Had some coffee, hung around and socialized a bit, then came home to ice my ankle.
Between the way the ankle felt while stretching and icing, and how it feels now, I think stopping at 5 was a Good Idea. Maybe I could have got away with 8 miles today; but there are no medals for training runs.
That closes out September at a low total mileage, but at least it's more than October 2016. Met the goal of running regularly again, met the goal of making a decision on Boston, and now I need to think about a goal for October. See you all on the October thread.

Run this am was a good one. I was feeling like running easy but good and wanted to test the results. I'm trying to figure out my pace for my marathon. I think I could run a 3:45 if I do it right but the question is how to do it right. I talked to my dad this am and he told me about his best marathon a 3:47. He ran the first 20 miles at 9 minutes a mile for a three hour mark; then was able to let loose and cruise the final 10k in 47 minutes. I think I can use this strategy. I'm not sure if I'll have a 47 minute 10k left in me after 20 miles but even if it a 55 minute 10k that should still be a good result. UA replaced my defective heart monitor this week. I haven't set it up yet. When I do, I'm hoping a working monitor will give me more confidence in its use.2

Good month of running mixed with all the usual suspects that got in the way to hit the target I set 30 days ago. If it was not for a 12k race tomorrow - would have run the extra 6 miles this morning - but figure I will save that energy and see how it goes running it a bit faster.3 -

Last run of the month. On to October.1 -
I have still been working on recovery and thought I'd give you an update for the month before it is over.
Sept 3rd - went to the ICU for the first of 3 surgeries to help remove clot that was occluding my left common iliac (about your belly button) down the entire left leg.
Sept 6th - left the ICU - but couldn't walk more than a few steps and could barely manage to stand long enough to wash my hands
Sept 10th - walked one mile
Sept 11 - walked 2.6 miles - my entire neighboorhood
Sept 13 - walked 3.5 miles
Sept 14 - walked 4 miles
Sept 15 - walked 5 miles
Sept 16 - walked 4 miles and managed to jog about a 2-3 mailbox distance before I would have to quit
Sept 17 -walked 5 miles, including a couple of quarter mile jogging intervals
Sept 18th - back at work again
Sept 21 - worked out with my trainer - upper body only - and managed half mile jogging intervals in my walk
Sept 25 - managed 2 one mile intervals in my walk
Sept 28 - worked out with my trainer and did some body weight leg work - and then managed to "run" a 5k - personal worst time - but continuous running movement
Sept 30 - 10K - ran the entire thing - but my left foot was numb by 3.5 miles and my knee down was numb/tingling from 4.5 miles on. Even though I was barely under a 12 min mile pace, I spent 65% of the run in zone 5.
So I think today's run was about as far as I can push myself right now. Glad to be back running at least somewhat - but still trying to wrap my head around how far I have to go to get back to my prior pace and endurance. And not really sure what to make of heart rate data when you have impeded flow back to the heart - so just trying to go by feel. Though unless, I just want to walk - I can't stay at an entirely conversational pace.
Glad to see so many people doing well this month! - Especially MobyCarp - looks like your recovery is progressing far better than mine!3 -

Didn't get out the door Thursday until quite late. I felt good while running and could have gone a bit farther but it was edgingbon to 9:30pm and was pitch black out so I went home instead of doing an extra lap.
Yesterday morning my legs just plain hurt, especially my knees. Thinking some of it is delayed reaction to the downhills in last week's race and some due to the work move but either way I decided that I'd better take a couple of extra rest days before I run again. My new training plan has me doing 2 miles on Tuesday and I'm good with taking it easy and just walking until then even though I won't make my goal.
See you all in October!

19 km - Run 3km - Walk 200m. Was originally planned for 20km but by the time I hit 18 I was all done so short cut back to the coffee shop. None of my running friends were back yet so grabbed a Cup of Joe and sat outside in the Sunshine - actually nodded off it was so warm on the South side. Looked back to the parking lot and all my running friends cars were gone. Will have to give them a hard time about abandoning me.
Raining at the start but the forecast and cloud cover promised a nice morning. Cleared off by 6km and was a Beautiful morning. Struggled in the last 3 km - something about a Hill Climb to the Finish.
All the trees are dressed in their Bright Orange - Red colors with the odd Pine tree to give a little Green - so a great day.

. . .
- Especially MobyCarp - looks like your recovery is progressing far better than mine!
Hard to say what is "better." I haven't run as far as 10K yet, and I have noticed that I lost some aerobic fitness while not running. Maybe I have fewer symptoms from running than you do; but that might be because I haven't challenged myself as hard, or because it's harder to come back from surgery than from tendinitis. Can't really compare the situations properly, they're different.1 -
@MobyCarp - no worries about me trying to truly compare my running to yours, lol. I just meant to say you were doing well and I was happy to see that. This recovery stuff is not fun.
My doctors don't know if I will ever get normal blood flow back in my left leg, so I am just trying to do what I can1 -
BAH! Had I known I would not have turned in when I did... 198.7 miles for September. Figures. BUT this month I had FIVE PRs...
Distance in a week 54.2
Distance in a month 198.7 miles
Duration in a month 33:49:34
Calories Burned in a month 27,702
Elevation in a month 17,187 feet
Not bad month! See y'all over in the October thread...

September total = 93.4 miles.
Came up short of 100, but I really didn't have a set goal this month, so I'll go with 93.4.
In October I plan to try to get back to it and hit that goal. And maybe try to run another 13.1.
Love you all, see you next month.5 -
9/29 Walked 1 mile, ran 1.5, walked 1.2
9/30 Walked 1 mile, ran 2, walked 2
Ended the month with 2 really tough runs. Felt like I hit a wall and suddenly instead of getting easier it got harder. I know it happens so I'm not giving up!
23.66 miles of my 30 mile run goal. Walked 46 miles. I had one bad week where I missed 2 or 3 days? So I missed a few miles there.2 -
Finished the month at 110 of my 100 mile goal so I’m happy. Decided to take another rest day today, not because I needed it but I slept in and then went to watch my bestie’s son play football. He’s 10 and it’s not too often that we have off a Saturday from XC and I get to watch him play. Then Skip and I spent the day doing mommy daughter stuff.
@HonuNui I just loved reading about Steve. What a special young man. Skip’s injury is weird, she is still really hurting, thanks for asking.
@JessicaMcB I love your daughter. It’s so wonderful to hear the innocent and sweet way they see things.
@ACJones82 awesome!
Woohoo @BruinsGal_91 great job on the race and first place AG!! Awful weather!
Great job everyone who made goal this month. If you didn’t you’ll get it next month. For those hurt, get well soon!!!

September wasn't good for me especially this last week had to work late. September - total run 37.5km walk 65.50 km. I guess it's better than doing non at all. You all inspire me to keep running. I'll never get to the mileage you all do but it gives me hope. 2 years ago I wouldn't even have had the courage to run. This is my progress since 2015.

Tanning? Are you in the southern hemisphere then?
Lol! Close...and because of our crazy weather, I end up with a better tan for Christmas than I have in August. Cooler temps mean less treadmill running for me! Yay! But it'll still be in the 70s and 80s for awhile.1 -
10/1/17 Wineglass Half Marathon, 13.1 miles, 2:17:13
You guys, what a day. We had a lovely day on Saturday at the race expo and pasta dinner. The guy who is race director for the Boston Marathon, Dave McGillverey, was the speaker and it was a pretty inspiring program. We also sat with some super interesting people, including a guy who had done 64 marathons (he thought) and a woman who ran the last 5 miles or so of a marathon in just her socks because her new shoes were giving her blisters. She'd also done like 29 marathons.
I slept pretty poorly and was still suffering from my cold a bit, and the alarm came so early. It was COLD at the start, at only about 35 degrees F. We had to bus to the start and it was quite a bit of logistics and standing in the cold. I had decided to do the 2:15 finish pace group, which was pretty nerve-wracking as I've never run with a pacer and didn't know if I could hang with that pace. Well, even before I had a chance to find out, things took a bit of wrong turn when I tripped over an unseen cone in the road in the massive swarm of people moving toward the starting line. Before I even got to the start! I fell hard, because I totally didn't see it coming, and bruised and scraped both knees and hit my right hip and ribs as well (I think my arm was trapped against my ribs). I was too startled to find myself on the ground to do much more than jump back up and try to get going (and not get run over). A few people asked if I was okay and I just said yes, because I didn't want to think about the alternative.
So, I just went! I tried not to look too much at my knees and just let the adrenaline of the start kind of carry me through. It didn't seem so bad, so I felt like I could at least finish, if not manage my hoped-for PR. I didn't want to talk myself into letting that goal go already though so I kept the pacer in sight and concentrated on one foot in front of the other.
Things went pretty well for about the first 7-8 miles, and I was consistently about the same distance behind the pacer, and the time was actually a little ahead of pace, so I was pleased. Then I started feeling tired and it was getting hard to keep up. My pace was slipping and I started to lose the pace group. But I knew I was still ahead of the 2:20 group so I kept trying to at least push it a little more and not give up completely. Miles 10 and 11 were tough, and my slowest paces. When I got to the 12 mile mark I gave myself a final kick in the figurative pants (no energy for actual kicking, and knees to sore). I managed to get the last mile back down and even sprint for the end. That finish line kept moving away from me, I swear, but finally I crossed and my watch was saying about 2:17, although I didn't see the race clock well enough to know how accurate that was but I hoped it was close. The official time ended up being 2:17:13, which was a 3-minute PR for me. I was very happy but of course wonder if I hadn't thrown myself on the ground to start how much better I could have done. Seriously very excited though.
As soon as I stopped, I got feeling back in my knees and they were screaming. My hip and ribs also. I got some water and chocolate milk and then kept moving so I wouldn't freeze up. I went back to the finish line and watched for my friend to finish. She also got a new PR and was super excited. When she saw my knees she was horrified but thought it was pretty badass. We got some food and then I went to the medical tent to get cleaned up. They were so nice there! They weren't busy because I think the cool weather was working in their favor. But while I was in there, the first female finisher for the marathon came in and she looked like she was going to collapse. She was okay, but wow what effort she must have put in.
In good news, I didn't think about my cold at all during this run It was long drive home and I was happy to get cleaned up and now am resting and icing. Tomorrow is going to be a challenge.

Goal for the month 55 miles with a half scheduled at the end of the month. I am trying a "rest my legs" strategy in which a run a short distance and long distance in a week with lots of rest in between (filled with working at a job, sleeping, etc.)
9/1....9 miles... In zone all but 9 minutes. 13 minute/mile.
9/4...4 miles ...in zone all but 1 minute. 12:45 minute miles.
9/11...12 miles....focusing on running more at race pace....goal was to run under 14 minute miles. I haven't run this far in a while....noted that this felt easier than I expected especially the first 10 miles. Pace was 13:10 per mile on the average. My last half marathon was at the 12:38 pace ( in May). In zone only 24 minutes. My main goal was to stay relaxed. Hamstrings felt tight the next morning.
9/14...5 miles.....really not feeling like running at all....goal was to stay relaxed and to run at comfortable pace without focusing on zone running. pace was 12:48....in the zone 31 minutes.
9/17...5 miles.... in zone 24 minutes...pace was 12:24. Lungs felt great....head was into it....not as leg weary today.
9/22....5 miles ...in zone 33 minutes pace was 13:48.
9/25...9 miles....in zone 22 minutes. Pace was 13:53. Some cramping, but not bad. No soreness the next day.
9/27...4 miles.
9/39...13.1 miles
total....63.1 miles.
goal....55 miles.
Short race report....9/30... I slept very little the night before, 1 hour and lots of tossing and turning. After eating breakfast, I drove downtown to park. I wasn't familiar with the parking rules and finally found a garage to park in, amongst road construction. I looked at my watch. It was 7:15 and the race started at 7:30. I was probably a mile away and ran to the start of the race. It was starting as I got there and ran approximately 4 rows behind the 3:00 pacer to begin the race. I started fast, running about 12 minute miles which was my strategy, and should have pr'd this race if I kept it up. Around mile 7, I noticed that I was about 6 minutes ahead of the 2:45 pacer and almost caught up to the 2:30 pacer at mile 9. Then I started getting a little headache. By mile 10, it was a pounding headache. I ate some sports beans, which only made me thirstier. By mile 11, I started walking part of it. By that time the 2:45 pacer passed me and I couldn't catch her after that. I finished at 2:51:33. Very sore and very thirsty. I downed a bottle of water after I finished. Then I lost the car....couldn't find it for almost an hour. I saw a familiar landmark and located the car.
During my search for the car, I was stopped by some women who wanted to take a picture of me for their scavenger hunt, and couldn't believe that I ran a half marathon. It put things into perspective for me. Although I wasn't happy with my time, I was thrilled with my effort....I gave 100% and have the super sore quadriceps to prove it. I have never had a headache while running....so strange...maybe I was dehydrated before the race. Maybe I need to practice drinking water when training.
And, I did meet my running goal for the month.
