Re insurance in Florida: I don't understand it either. My friend who lives here now but owns two houses in Florida says they don't have hurricane or flood insurance on those houses because it is too expensive. I have no idea if hurricane and/or flood damage are excluded from our homeowners insurance because it's never been a concern before. I assume any damage from our house would come from a tornado, which surely is covered or why even have the stuff?
Windstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes are covered in most standard policies .... I just read .... UNLESS you live in an area that is prone to higher than usual occurrences of these types of storms ... like the coastal areas of Florida ... or tornado alley. Then, you usually have to buy a rider or endorsement to add coverage to your basic policy. Flooding from these types of storms are never part of a standard policy and always require a rider. But if your house is damaged by rain that comes from a missing roof ... then that water damage is covered. And yes, the insurance is expensive but you can get it.
So my policy here near Buffalo would generally cover me from wind damage from tornadoes and hurricanes as we're not in an area prone to tornadoes and hurricanes. Gee isn't that wonderful? Although we had a tornado just down the street this past August... it was an anomaly. And a hurricane ... well that ain't gonna happen up here.
I do carry earthquake insurance because we live near a northeastern fault line ... my insurance friend laughs every time I tell him about it ... and the coverage is marginal at best. But I figured it was better than nothing. And hey ... you never know.
Insurance is a racket to be certain!

Hi ladies, spent most of the day watching the news. Husbands nephew is close to Miami so he's very worried. He lives with his dad right now and because his dad wasn't leaving he didn't. Husband didn't sleep last night. Haven't had a text from him in about 4hrs. Nervous not knowing what is going on.
Got the house all cleaned. I like to come back from a trip to a clean house. My foot hasn't been too bad as I've pretty much been staying off of it. Tightened the straps on my new bathing suit so that my boobs aren't down around my waist. Hopefully I'll get a chance to wear it. I've been watching the weather in Delaware and has been in the 70s. Perfect weather for me as I sweat so much.
Weight today a little less but have been going up then down daily. 209 today. 210 yesterday. I probably shouldn't weigh every day but can't help myself.
Thinking of all you that are affected by the hurricane and all you that are struggling with something in your life right now. ((Hugs))
Off to bed to read then sleep. This is my favorite part of the day. Everything that needed to be done is done and it's my time to relax, crawl into bed before my husband comes to bed. Me time! Love it.

Joyce - Hope you get a good clean result on your colonoscopy. I've had to repeat mine because the prep wasn't optimal. This last time... I still had areas that wolerent clear enough to view the whole field. (Sticky residue.) This year I've boosted my fiber and water to get a cleaner colon. Last year I consumed lots of cheese. It was my habit to have 1.5 oz of cheddar and an ounce of almonds every morning with coffee. So... I cut back on the cheese just to see if that might help. Trying to have more veggies. Salad daily.

Wendy I didn't know about Ernestine Shepherd...but I am going to find out about her now! Wow! What an inspiration! Thank you for posting that picture and information.
Janet Sweet Baby, Sweet Dog, Sweet Picture.
Pip Awwww! You and Kirby are so adorable! Kirby's simple act of love and kindness in the middle of the night brought me to tears. What a sweet man.
Kim Great to hear from you! Glad you are busy and fine. If you come back soon and read this, my main news is that Olivia is going to be a big sister! They will be only 14 months apart. Makes me tired just to think of it. Katie is pregnant, nauseated, and still breastfeeding Olivia. LOL! Ah, motherhood!
Carol Nice to hear about the hospitality Georgia is offering Florida refugees. It's heartwarming.

Concerning eating the same thing every day: 6 years ago, I was on a medically supervised diet, and was very successful. Part of the strategy was "limited palate", i.e., limiting food choices so that there were maybe a total of 8 meal plans to choose from, 2 breakfast options, and 6 options for lunch and supper, so I ate the same foods frequently. This was very helpful to suppress cravings and 'food thinking'. However, it is not something I could sustain happily for a lifetime. I believe food is to be savored, and I enjoy the creative aspect of food preparation, as well as sharing delicious food with others.
The plan that I was on was healthy and successful...except that there was not enough emphasis on maintenance, and unfortunately I gained a lot of the weight back. I am now working on getting rid of the excess weight again, with more emphasis on slow, steady weight loss, eating a variety of delicious foods, and a smoother transition into maintenance. I feel yucky when I am too heavy. I loved the energy I had when my weight was normal. I loved the way my clothes fit. Not any more. My maladaptive eating triggers are fatigue, frustration, and anxiety. I do best on a "lowish" carb plan with adequate protein and plenty of nonstarchy vegetables. My "treat" is my homemade whole fat yogurt with berries. Nirvana!

Now taking bets on whether we will be able to go to Sanibel, Florida later this month for vacation. At least I bought trip insurance. So many people without electricity. Irma knows how to put on a show!
Karen in Virginia6 -
Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .
Good Evening Friends,
Gloria, are you saying that the chili and broccoli cleaned you out? Lol
Kay, it sounds interesting to help with preparing the food bags. It also sounds like they had it organized well. 31,000 is a lot of bags of food!
Alyson, welcome. This is a great place for support so come often.
M, cool ship. Hope you both enjoyed your cruise.
NYKaren, so glad you had a better night’s sleep. I hope it continues.
Katla, I hope you and Arrow had fun together. How about a picture once in a while?
Heather, I can’t remember if you have seen a doctor about that cough?? I sure hope it gets better soon. It is sad to lose a close friend when you are used to spending time with them. I’m sad for you.
Lanette, I had to laugh reading about your DH who has enough friends. I had a good friend years ago that didn’t want to associate with a new person in our Newcomers group and said she already had enough friends. I have never forgotten that. I on the other hand, have room in my life for tons and tons of friends. We also have a dog that doesn’t like wet feet. He will hang his tail half off the sidewalk and sometimes it works and other times it doesn’t. LOL
Joyce, I agree that any tragedy belongs to all of the United States. That is one reason I’m so disappointed that not one station is giving us any information on how the people in Houston and other areas are doing. I want to know and still worry about them.
Kim, it was good to hear from you. I was just thinking about you today so your timing was perfect. Do drop in when you can.
Joyce, I hope the rest of the night goes easy with your prep.. Stay warm, too.
Beth, we aren’t near the ocean and aren’t in a flood plain but we carry Flood Insurance. I can’t imagine every having an opportunity to use it but better safe than sorry. I was in insurance years ago and I just know that “rising water” is not covered. Our homeowner’s does cover Wind and Hail so we are set for anything. The Flood Insurance automatically comes with a high deductible and isn’t great coverage.
to all the Newbies. Come often and join in the chat. This thing works!! Please sign your post with what you want to be called. It makes it easier for us to respond to you. Also a location is great, be it specific or general. We are happy to have you join us.
I didn’t see it but DH told me that he read some of the cruise ships will go to the islands with Ida damage to help with relief efforts. That was nice to hear. I hope all of you are safe.
Sending love, good thoughts and cool sunshine to all of you.
I Love you

Fri did an hour of an extremecardio DVD then drove to VA. Fri night Jess and I drove to PA to decorate the cake for the shower. Sat. did 30 minutes of a Leslie Sansone Walk at Home DVD, today I did about 45 minutes of a Prevention Slim and Strong DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do one segment of the Beach Body Sampler DVD, hold my plank, then go to the extremepump class.
Welcome everyone new!
Terry - I didn't have to worry about throwing out a cake. I have never in my entire life been so insulted as I was. We were having a nice time. I was surprised how few people there were there. After dinner, suddenly there is this tiramsu and cannoli there, I had no idea where they came from. Well, we go to settle up the bill and Amanda tells me that the waitress asked her if she wanted tiramsu and cannoli and she said "sure". She knew d*** good and well that I made the cake, she saw the two cakes. She said "I wanted to be sure there was enough". How much does she think people can eat???????? Then...after she slaps me in the face and Jess (who I thought did a great job of decorating) she has the gall to ask me to pay more than the 1/3 I told them I would pay for Jess. Maria told me that she'd pay Angela's portion (who had to work. I don't know about that, maybe it was just something she said. If I knew that there was a shower that I was expected to be at and I knew it for months, I would make sure I was there). Amanda asks me "how is Maria going to get the money? She doesn't even know Angela" I just told her "I don't know, she said she'd get the money from her" Not my problem how she's going to get the money. Amanda said that she didn't think we'd be charged for the tiramsu and cannoli (really, regardless, they shouldn't have been ordered at all). She wanted me to pay more than the 1/3 "because Maria paid for the desserts". I had made the cakes and she knew it! I just said to her "of course we'll get billed". What planet is she on? She made a big point of saying how she was in 10 weddings. And she didn't know that you'd get billed for something extra? Or maybe she didn't do anything at these weddings.
Michele L from NC - do you know that my last name begins with an "L" too???? What part of NC are you in? I'm in Newton. Welcome
Mary - I'd be willing to bet that you feel the way you do because of all the carbs. I know when I have a good amount of carbs, I feel terrible.
DJ - I don't think we're going to get much wind. Fortunately for us, the hurricane seems to be going towards TN
Met a lady at the Love's station on my way home today. She said she was an evacuee from FL and that they would probably lose everything. So sad
Lenora - thanks for asking about the shower. It was supposed to start at 1, Denise didn't get there until 2:45, people didn't get there until 2-2:30. They didn't have time to play any games. I thought I was gracious, I greeted people, talked to them. I did welcome everyone and apologized for any confusion about the invitations. I did start to tear up, it was my daughter's shower. Then the incident with the cake.
Maria posted this thing on Facebook "thank you Amanda for a wonderful shower" so I posted back "what did I ever do to Amanda to deserve to be treated the way I was? whatever I've done was unintentional. I will apologize, but first I need to know what it is that I did". Well, Denise called to say she was taking down my post because she doesn't want any drama. Vince got on the phone and asked her if Maria gave any credit to Jess. I told Denise "the answer is 'no'" So at Vince's prodding, she took down my post but added something about thanking Angela, Amanda and especially Jess for all her hard work orgnizing a lovely shower". She did post the pic of the cakes I made. I'll post a pic at the end. So it's all right for Maria and her family to insult us, but we can't say anything because that'll be drama for Denise. Got it.
Bryan sent Denise an email that he wasn't coming to her wedding because (get this) "he has to think about his mental wellbeing" whatever the h*** that means.
I admit that I am sick to my stomach about all this wedding/shower crap and how Denise doesn't seem to care about her own family but Maria (who thinks Amanda walks on water) is so so wonderful.
Denise did start crying when I gave her the placq. Pete came at the end and that was the one gift she showed him

I don't have an instant pot but a good friend has one. She eats totally dairy free and she shared the recipe she used for dairy free yogurt using her instant pot.

Michele, I am so sorry about the shower. I can't imagine what the wedding and any baby shower will be right. I think you need to start practicing meditation.
It has been an intense night for this prep. Not a hurricane but never the less intense. I have now had to wash all 3 heavy house oats, house shoes, bathroom rug, blanket I had on me and socks. I am just going to have both my iPad and phone plugged in the bathroom, water and my prep in the bathroom and stay in there for all 4 hours. We have a sturdy tv table/tray and I may just put a pillow on it and try to rest. I guess I have forgotten how much your belly just burns right after you take it. I wonder if this. Urging is how Charlie felt with his ulcerative colitis.
I hope everyone is safe from this storm as it continues to move up into Georgia and beyond. DJ! Are you out of danger. The one thing I did find interesting was the empty ocean bed.

Janetr - Your ornaments are works of art.
Michele - Don't let that woman make you miss your daughter's shower. Poor Denise. She must feel so torn up being in the middle of everything.
Lenore - I just read your sad news. I am sorry for your family's loss.
KJ - I think a lot of women can identify with what you are going through. Honest conversation may help and also being the initiator at times.
Dana - Zech and Gabby are adorable.
Carol - Praying for your son and his wife. Drugs and drink sure can cause problems.
Wendy - Clara is precious.
Karen in VA - Another baby on the way? That is absolutely awesome!
I have made it to pg 15 tonight. I've read everything and am trying to get back in the swing of things.
Back from the failed fishing trip to a failed fridge. I couldn't believe it this morning. I spent half my day throwing away food and cleaning the fridge. Quite a mess.
Dragged my sister out of bed and out to supper. I let her guilt me into sharing the appetizer platter with her. I know better.
The guys went to Monster Jam in Calgary. They all said the first half was boring but the second was better. They were agreement that they had done it and now they don't have to again.
Having my own version of bridal shower drama but won't get into it tonight.
Definitely not looking forward to work tomorrow.
Waterton has been evacuated. No camping allowed in Southern Alberta. Our friends in Okanogan are still on alert. Air quality here is terrible. Supposed to rain for 3 days starting Wednesday. I can't wait.
Feeling put down, frustrated and like nothing is ever good enough.

RYE--you are in my thoughts.
Good morning to us all. Got up to let dogs out and get paper. It is cold here. Two blankets on the bed. I love autumn but it seems a sad time and this is 2 months early. Need to put warmer shoes and a coat by back door. AND WEAR SOCKS TO BED. I take an anti-depressant but it gives me dreams so I filter out the memories of those and go back to bed to just sleep. I think I am getting sick (weather change) and I did not get my flu shot this weekend. I will have to wait the week to be sure we are okay and then I will call work to see if shots are free or covered. Have a great week, my friends.

And now about to commence studying for the rest of the evening.
I'm in my home office, wrapped up in a blanket with my sheepskin slippers on. Still quite chilly here.
Machka in Oz

Machka – I am jealous you and your DH get to do all the touristy things. When my DH was still in the Marines, he was stationed in Arlington VA where we lived for a year. I could kick myself that I didn’t see all the sights like the Smithsonian, US Capitol and monuments, etc. that were just across the Potomac. Seems like when we’d have time off we’d go exploring along the Appalachian Trail or just see the countryside… which was OK too.
I started visiting tourist attractions back when I moved to Winnipeg many, many years ago. For the first several years, my ex and I couldn't afford to go anywhere, so I'd drag him out to see this and that ... whatever was free or low cost. Then, after he was out of the picture, I started cycling further afield. I'd come back to work and tell people that I'd gone to see things and they would tell me, "I've lived here since I was born, but I've never gone there!" ...
The nomadic me loves to travel, but when I can't cycling as though I were travelling somewhere eases the restlessness. I can pretend to be a tourist just about every weekend.
And we did have a lovely 1.5 hour "sail" ... the only down side was that, for the first time since about March, there wasn't much wind. So we had the sails up for a little while, but not long and we motored most of the way.
Depending on how we feel this coming weekend, we might take in a museum or two. Or maybe go canoeing ... who knows!! It will be a bit weather dependent, of course. I won't go out in our canoe in a roaring gale or cold temps.M in OZ: I agree with your point about weighing twice a day. Thanks for the photo of the Lady Nelson. The Lady Washington used to visit our town on a regular basis but we haven't seen it in several years. It may be in Florida, for all I know. It was the pirate ship in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. DH & I took a ride on it one year.
That would have been cool ... I would have like that!
Machka in Oz2 -
Mashka, when I was pregnant with my first daughter, sometimes I could have some pretty fierce dreams. I really had never heard of the Australian area of Tasmania but cartoons did show us the Tasmanian Devil. We lived in a house that had a pretty rough basement. So one night I dreamt of this Tasmanian Devil going at the whirlwind pace the cartoons always showed him. But he was up in my bedroom terrorizing me.
Joyce, Indiana
But a real Tasmanian Devil is quite different to the cartoon. I can see some similarities, but not much. I have a huge stuffed Taz sitting on top of the shelf above my desk here in my home office.

Michele, I'm sorry you had a rough time at the shower. I offer you two of my "Happiness Commandments"--*don't take things personally
*don't expect praise or recognition. They have served me well in many situations. Also I agree with the person who said that the shower was about your daughter, not about the mothers or sisters, or cousins or whoever else.
Machka, whenever we drive anywhere near where we live, we remind ourselves that many of the other drivers have saved all year to travel from where they live to see the beautiful sights we see every day. My husband has a sign above his computer that says, "If you are lucky enough to live near the water, then you are lucky enough". I see the Olympic Mountains every morning when I walk my dogs. It can't get much better than that.
We have three more bags to take to the thrift shop today in addition to quite a bit of paper that went to recycling or the pile to be shredded.
The sky is clear this morning so no smoke and no rain so maybe the painters will come back.

Kim good to hear from you.
Michele the cakes are darling. Good job!

Michelle - I loved the cakes! You and Jess did a great job!
Allie - Good luck! Hang in there. We are all rooting for you. I hope the headache gets better. I woke up and took headache drugs myself this morning. I am now considering a quick nap before I head out to run errands.

My early birthday celebration. I'm the tall one in the bright red. The four of us on the left have been together since school days, 3 of us kindergarten (or before), 1 joined us in 8th grade and the one on the left became a great friend when she moved to Houston about 25 years ago.
8 -
Michelle I have ever seen anything like those cakes, wow how special!
AllieMy sympathies. When I get my rare migraine I have to curl up and just feel like dieing. I'm so sorry you have that on this already stressful day.
Machka, I think that is wonderful! I'm not as focused but I think I've hit all the high spots in the laces I've lived, I'm a big museum goer, myself - I can always spend an afternoon at a museum, even the same museum - it always amuses me when people say "you are going to the Modern museum Again?!"
Thanks for the good wishes, my fingers are crossed here but I don't know when I might reasonably expect to hear anything. I do know someone who works there ( how I heard about the job) but she doesn't have anything to do with the hiring processes. The job is in the facility owned by a big local hospital, so the hiring processes ate part of an extensive hospital organization rules anot the small facility close by.1 -
First Michele in NC - At least the shower is finally over - and the cakes are gorgeous. My mother made me a doll cake for every birthday up until I was in junior high. Not sure why - I hated dolls, and wouldn't play with them. Nonetheless, your picture brought back great memories. Your daughter was obviously very touched by your plaque.
Allie - thinking about you. Hope all goes well... and hope the trailer in Florida came through it all OK. Sounds like Irma wasn't nearly as bad as feared in south Florida.
Rye - hope it comes through.
Lived in England for six years, all told, two separate three-year military tours separated by an eight-year tour in Montana. Never tired of Stonehenge, which was a good thing, as everyone wanted to go there. Loved Scotland, Cornwall, Wales, but never actually made it over to Ireland. Would still love to go there.
Been on the phone with a foundation executive director all weekend trying to get a tech issue cleared up in order to submit their final report for the grant year. Never actually accomplished that little feat, so it's a fair bet I'll be on the phone with their techies today. Grrf. Got better things to do... but another grant with them is at stake for the upcoming year, so there's a bit riding on it.

Michele ~ I am so glad that your shower is finally over and maybe you can relax some before the wedding itself! The cakes were gorgeous and your daughter is lovely!
Lisa ~ Love all the swirls of color! Very pretty!
Rye ~ Crossing fingers that you get the job!
Joyce ~ Wow! So sorry for what you are going through.
Sharon ~ Thanks for prayers for my son. He joined AA last week and tomorrow will be his 7th day.
Kim ~ Thanks so much for checking in! Know that being so busy will be good for your bank account.
Josephine ~ Prayers for you!
All of the schools are closed here today and tomorrow! I am glad that the children will not have to load the buses in bad weather. It is damp and chilly here. We are worried about a tall pine tree that was hit with lightning last summer and just hope it won't get blown over.
