Hi ladies. Quick post today. FIL is better; stroke is mild-ish. He will have to go to rehab though. Dh got home ok last night. The meeting with FIL and minister went well although his step sister still won't even look him in the eye. I realized today how awful I look; the stress from the last year has taken a toll.
((((HUGS)))) and prayers to the many of you who need them.
Katla: Thanks for asking about support. I do have a fabulous support system here in friends and co-workers.
For some reason after reading all of the last 2 days' post I am singing the Lumberjack Song! Ear worm!
Go crazy cat ladies of the world!
Take care, more tomorrow. Meg from sunny Omaha3 -
Felicia: That looked like an amazing slide. How did your swimsuit hold up?
Allie: I'm glad your coworkers were having fun teasing you. It also sounds like they are happy for you. :flowerforyou:
Terry in VT: I've seen reports from Dan Rather on the situation in Puerto Rico. I am so disappointed that our government is not stepping up to help our own territory as it should. :grumble:
Sue: You are lucky to still have your mom. Mine has been gone for more than 20 years. She died from emphysema caused by chain smoking.
Lenore: Your display of evidence that your road needed fixing was brilliant. Did they get it taken care of?
Marcelyn: Our city had a big drainage project to do a couple of years ago. The contractor they hired brought in a herd of goats to clear out the gully. They fenced the area and turned the goats loose in it. They did a great job.
Barbie: I hope there is a good solution for Jake's current pain problems. My DH will be having a MRI in five days. They do this to keep track of his MS, but a few years ago he had arthritic issues that affected his lower back enough to require surgery. That also required an MRI. :ohwell: I'll be thinking good thoughts for Jake. I hope they find a good way to eliminate his pain. :flowerforyou:
Michele: My daughter joined MFP a few years ago but didn't stick with it. She needs to lose more than a few pounds, too. Now that she's done having babies, maybe she will find the energy to take on the challenge of improving her health & fitness. A person really needs to be ready & she's had other worries for the last few years. :ohwell: I think that Janetr is absolutely correct, "IMO coming from a person who has been WAY over weight all my life, you can't cajole, shame, push or pull someone else into wanting to eat healthy and/or lose weight. Until the person has a desire for a healthy life style, it's not going to change."
Mary in AZ: I'll put Rowan in my prayers. (((HUGS)))
Sharon in Lethbridge: I've observed that marriage problems can be contagious. I hope your psychologist turns out to be excellent. DH and I went to one when we were in the process of deciding whether to move here. He actually supervised/refereed a conversation between us and was able to help us talk things through without getting mad or upset. I had been to him previously to help me deal with the loss of my mom. It was a huge help for both of us to have his guidance. :flowerforyou:
I had trouble sleeping last night, which isn't usual for me. Perhaps I had one cup of coffee too many yesterday. I think I'll switch to mint tea after a certain time. I'll start with a lunchtime cut off and see how it goes.

Mary thank you so much on the ornamets. Glad baby Rowan is going home. I love your rig set up there in AZ. Looks very much like where we stay in Apache Junction when we go out there. Hope you begin to notice a difference in your health.

Happy Good Neighbor Day!
Lenora - Yes, Joanna Gaines would be happy to see what's under my walls! And Chip would say "SHIP-lap, SHIP-lap" in one of his crazy voices. The house was built in 1938. At the time, homes in this area were built with shiplap walls and ceilings, then covered in wallpaper (even the ceilings). I guess other parts of the country used different methods. You don't see lathe and plaster much down here, for example.
Marcelyn - Urban goat tender, what a great job! I love goats, and it sounds like it would be fun... for awhile.
Rye - Oh, your knotty pine is glorious! That stuff is hard to find these days. My grandmother had it in her kitchen in Houston and some of it was damaged when a car drove into her house. She insisted on keeping the knotty pine and they really had to dig to find the right wood to repair it.
Barbie - Congratulations on getting the paint job finished. The house looks great!
Mary - Rowan is a beautiful boy. Holding him in the light. So happy to hear that he's going home!
Machka - I'm the opposite - I could eat myself sick on cherries. Those and blackberries are my favorite fruits.
Wendy - We don't have a dishwasher either. I know a lot of people would have bought our house with the intention of gutting and "modernizing" the kitchen but it suits me just fine. I'll eventually be doing some cosmetic stuff (paint, countertops, and flooring all need attention) but that's it. Love your fluffy babies!
Lisa - Glad you're safely back home. That is a lot of driving in one day, and if I remember right it feels even longer because the land is so empty out there.
I've been on the phone with family a lot since I got home. My dad is having a lot of little issues and he is the most aggravating patient. He can't ever accurately relate what the doctors tell him, and my sister makes plans to go with him to appointments only to have him catch a ride with someone else. He's still living independently and that's good. To be honest, I think he's reached the point of just not caring about any of it. I'm trying to figure out what I can do from here to help him and support my sister, who is bearing most of the weight of caretaking. We may need plan for me to make a long-term visit to Houston to give her a break. Since I work from home I could keep an eye on him but I'd have to sleep on his sofa since he moved into a one-bedroom condo.
Well, the dogs are saying it's time to feed them, so I'd better take care of that and then get to work.
Be good to yourselves!

Sorry I have been MIA for the last few months. We still have been unbelievably busy. I have been helping DH look for jobs on different websites. I even died his gray hair for him. We thought that possibly was one of the reasons he is not even being considered for positions that he is extremely qualified for. He went and got his CDL class B license for Arizona. That took several days. He wanted to get a hazardous endorsement and had to take a test. They then confiscated his Minnesota hardcopy license which he actually needed for the background check so now he has to wait for his hardcopy Arizona license for the background check to be conducted. The weather is beautiful here! 99° is a lot different here than in Minnesota. Sometimes I need a jacket for that type of weather. No humidity really makes a difference. We will be heading home to Minnesota in a couple of weeks while our fender Bender is repaired. We will be trailering my DH' S motorcycle down here. We also have a few things to do to winterize our cabin in Minnesota.
Janetr- thanks! I have noticed a huge difference in my health as far as my joints are concerned! The low humidity really helps!
Meg- I am thinking about you often and am glad you have a great support system. (((Hugs)))
Katla - sorry you had a rough night sleeping. I hope the mint tea helps.
Chris- thanks! We definitely have a fantastic group of friends on here!
Yvonne - thanks! I hope everything goes well for your sister with your dad. My sister is going through the same thing with my mom. It is hard when you're so far away.(((hugs)))

Felicia – Loved the memorable vacation videos! You know how to have fun!
Wendy – I can attest to the great workout having livestock gives. We sold our sheep farm ten years ago – I was super fit then bucking bales, carrying water buckets and sometimes sheep – just being active. Keep it up as long as you can! Aggravating how quickly the strength and muscle tone goes away when we no longer do those things. Thanks for sharing the photo of you with the horse in your garden and your kitchen/cat lady pix, lol. And I am envious of your bee keeping skills – thank you for the lesson on how to make a queen. Now tell me – aren’t you a Canadian and if so, how did you end up in the land down-under?
Rye – love your kitchen as well. Everything was made to last back in the 50’s. I want to be first in line if you ever decide to replace your stove, lol.
DJ – good luck on your house project! When my DH decided to rip off the dark paneling in our old farmhouse living room years ago, we found very heavy duty shiplap beneath it. This was a tiny house that had been added onto, room by room. And it had a friendly ghost. I love old well-made houses and the stories they sometimes tell with photos and memorabilia which often slips into forgotten places.
Becca – that does it, I’m making soup as soon as we get over this hot spell. Tomorrow the big cool down comes!! I can’t wait to start griping about the chilly weather with the endless rain.
Janet – I think you were a jeweler for the Russian Aristocracy in a previous life. Love those large jewels and bling!
Sharon – (((HUGS)))
Mary – sending prayers out for Rowan. He’s a cutie and yes, we need another crop of babies here! Update – so glad he’s going home today!
We have decided to “lay off” our cleaning lady. Things had been building with our dissatisfaction of her and yesterday she once again overslept (and/or would be late for some flimsy reason) and when she finally called to apologize and tell me she would be on her way, I told her to stay home.
Since the house was picked up, DH vacuumed and I tackled the bathrooms and part of the kitchen. We realized that we could do a better job ourselves and our lives would no longer revolve around her schedule and how to make ourselves scarce one morning every other week. I’m now fully retired and DH has recovered from some medical issues he was having, which is why I hired her in the first place.
I’ll send her a little “severance stipend” and leave it open – who knows, we may need her or someone like her down the road. It took me a couple years to even find her.
Part of my cleaning yesterday was taking an old toothbrush dipped in Murphy's oil soap and water solution and scrubbing around the sink, baseboards, and other areas which I assumed she hadn’t been doing because of the hard work and/or harsh chemicals involved. Took me ten minutes. Dumped a little borax into a dab of white vinegar and scrubbed the fiberglass shower stall. Streaks that had been there for a long time were gone, just like that. Another ten minutes.
On that note, I see some dirt on the living room walls that needs to be removed. Ten minutes with a little Murphy’s oil soap, and a sponge and it will be good as new.
Happy Thursday Everyone!

Machka thanks for the info regarding the bee tents. I will tell that one to my husband and file it in my "Good to know in case of future problems" reference memory bank. Our bees are put on Manuka sites, which are way out in never never land, on steep scrubby hillsides that are no good for anything else. Last year all the early manuka blooms got blown off and the bees couldn't gather the pollen in many areas, but our area is late blooming so we managed to get an average amount. It's amazing how weather dependent the honey industry is. We don't take our bees to orchards but maybe in the future we will expand in that direction. I am hoping this year we also expand into the propolis area as I know from first hand experience that it is a wonderful natural medicine, just like manuka is.
Thank you, Sisters, for the kind comments on my garden and dress. I found the "Stardust" dress at an Op Shop (Opportunity shop-second hand clothes) and couldn't resist buying it. I loved its lacy sleeves, it's lace up midriff and its luscious colour. Then I decided I would do a photo shoot wearing it one day...and I kept it for several years. One of my daughter's friends wants to become a professional photographer and wanted practice, so I paid her to come out and take pics of me and my horses in the garden last year. So glad I did. I will post one of my favourite photos that she took of me and my main man, Mani. It is a "Lord of the Rings" sort of photo.
Lanette I am an American, born in Citrus Heights California. I have lived in New Zealand for 31 years now, after coming to visit with a friend, and meeting my husband. We have been married 30 years now. (What a miracle!) People often think I am Canadian because my accent is so softened from years of talking "Kiwi" and walking around upside down.
Okay. I am going to try to find my fave pic:

Hi ladies I did type a message this morning but it went poof and then wouldn't connect me
Returned home safe last night and woke this am raring to go, a nice day sunny and breezy great drying weather. Managed to get most of holiday stuff washed and dried. As some of you know I'm not great on housework but I'm obsessive about washing and love it when it's great drying weather ( sad ain't it)
Had hair cut and blown feel much better
Glad baby Rowan is going home
ALLIE you are nearly there xx
Talk of kitchens, ours was done out in pine, cupboards, walls and ceiling all done by DH, now the cupboards and ceiling are painted but pine gone from walls. Also had bathroom in pine, that has now been painted

Wendy - I just LOVE your photos! Such a great idea.
I think we should all dress up more often.
Had a lovely day. This morning I watched some inspiring videos and downloaded Gretchen Rubin's new book. I am a Questioner, without question.
Then, with the painter painting happily as we had unpacked and moved the enormous dresser, we set off for Winchester for the dentist and a quest to find me some gold earrings for my birthday. I found some I very much liked, but they were silver with gold plating on one string. I wanted gold for allergies. When I went in and asked the very nice lady about them she said she could replace the silver posts with gold ones. I was astonished. So, while we were in the dentist she did that and we went to pick them up. She said she could do that for any earrings. Also she does restringing, so I will take my dark cultured pearls in which have broken. DH has got the earrings to give me on Monday. I am very pleased with them and forsee wearing them a lot.
Then we found a farmer's market selling two for one spelt and poppy seed bread. Then got on the train home for chilli.
Good day, especially as DH was closely following his cricket team who were in grave danger of being relegated to a lower division. They survived, so celebration all round. :drinker:
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx4 -
Forgot to say before, got on scale this am (with much trepidation) put on 3lbs which I'll take as I have been drinking beer every night for 2 weeks. Will exercise at home this weekend and get back to gym on Monday

Feeling downtrodden today! I want all my family healthy, and I worry so about my Navy son with pneumonia having to walk here and there. He is taking his antibiotics, and cold medicine, so I hope and pray he starts to feel better soon!
This past Monday after getting off the phone with Navy son, we decided to mail his two heavy boxes. Well, husband misstepped and fell, (onto heavily cushioned computer box). Thank goodness he didn't land on his kneecap that he broke year! He did stub his toe, and this visit to the walk-in clinic confirmed it is broken. So antibiotics for him, and maybe a hard toed shoe.
Meanwhile, I am doing fine! Loving all the goodness I read about you all! Most of you are like semi truck drivers barrelling down the road of yogurt own lives! Living in the drivers seat, making decisions! I am so darn proud of you all!

Hi ladies,
Lenora, sorry your dishwasher bit the dust. I have a bucket list too. It always seems to get longer instead of shorter! Hope the PT helps your dizziness.
Rye, I like the cabinets. Your kitchen looks so homey and cozy.
Barbie, hope Jake’s appointment goes well and he doesn’t need another surgery. Back pain is the pits. My husband had it and went to Dartmouth to do an intensive 3 week program(7 hrs/day, 5 days/wk). That did help him. His problem was arthritis. The house looks lovely.
MicheleNC, the applesauce trick sounds wonderful. I’m going to pop one in tonight.
Mary, my heart goes out to your godson’s new baby. I’ll send lots of good thoughts as he works through his first life struggle.
Machka, another interesting fact about bees. Hope you get sunshine soon.
Allie, I think Janetr said it perfectly. Be very proud of yourself and all you have accomplished. Welcome to the club. I go to the dr tomorrow for a bladder infection. Lots and lots and lots of water. (boy I’m tired of going to the bathroom). When I move I don’t settle anything about pictures or furniture until I have lived in the place for a while and get a feel for it.
Janetr, what imperfection? The Amish always put one intentional imperfection in their quits because they believed that only God made perfect things.
Wendy, the picture only shows part of your garden but I can image the rest is spectacular. I love the way you show who you are.
Sharon, glad to hear you are not a drug addict. Give your body plenty of rest. We take longer to heal when you are over 50. Please respect yourself enough to not take the abuse. Yes, it is abuse, both physical and mental. When my daughter was in an abusive situation I kept asking her “Do you want to be in the same place next year at this time?” I just kept asking her the same question over and over again. This is a decision you have to make for yourself and I’m glad you have a therapist that you are working with. You know that we all support any decision you make. We will be here anytime you need someone to listen. ((((HUGS))))
Ok, back from running to the bathroom (AGAIN!)
Lisa, what a long trip!
Carol, glad you are having a better day. Isn’t it amazing what a difference just one day will make. Glad the dishwasher will be fixed.
Meg, glad it was just a mild stroke. At least you are just looking awful (which you probably aren’t) and not in a fetal positon in a corner. You are doing well coping with all you have on your plate.
Katla, hope your daughter joins MFP. Chamomile tea is great for helping you sleep.
Yvonne, sorry to hear you father is having problems. It is so hard when the roles get reversed and you become the parent to your parent. I hope you can come up with a plan with your sister to help out. I’m sure she would appreciate the help.
Lanette, ifyour cleaning lady wasn’t cleaning the way you wanted, you were wise to let her go. Remember “Have a clean enough house to be healthy and messy enough to be happy.”
Kate, I like the white cupboards. I’ve thought off and on that I would like to paint mine.
Heather, Sounds like you found a good new jeweler.
Becca, sorry to hear you are having a down day. You have been stressed lately and that will make anyone depressed. It will pass and you will be back on track.

What a day. So busy at work. It's 1:30, and I've not taken a break. Ran out the door without eating breakfast. Didn't have time to stop for coffee. We had a small celebration at 9:00, so I had a small piece of cheese cake without the graham cracker crust and a sugar free swiss miss cocoa, and I'm drinking a G2, and that's it for today. I'm not even hungry. I do have a banana and some oatmeal I may eat later.
Be well.

Hi Gals,
Wendy – Loved your description of your life!
Felicia – while I have not done what you are trying, I think as long as you continue to monitor what you are eating/weighing/exercise you will be fine. Ok NO POSSIBLE WAY would I do the swing, but it might be hard to get me of the slide!
Rye – I love your kitchen, it has personality!
Karen – hope your wrist is ok
Mary – sending good thoughts to Rowan
Allie – glad that you are moving and it sounds perfect; I do think it is pretty interesting that it has taken this long for it to sink into Tom that you are out-of-there! You are amazing!
So my Levi (dog) has another ear infection the second one this summer, the opposite ear this time… long hair, floppy ears and a personality that has to put his nose and head into everything means stuff gets in his ears and BOOM another gosh darn ear infection. The vet has us trying the different samples that she gets to see what works best. I’m getting good at holding a 50lb dog still with 2 legs and one hand while squirting ear meds in with the other hand… That’s a workout all on its own.
I must admit while my garden is thriving Penny has had more luck with carrots than I have had!!! Once 10 plus years ago I had some grow in a pot, so am trying a pot again this winter. I have been planting like crazy, so far I have in 40 broccoli (40 more in the green house), lettuce, spinach, turnips, beets, radishes, I need to put in Kale and chard and cilantro… maybe tomorrow.

Terry - Love this saying! Very true! Glad to hear you are going to the doc for the bladder infection. Hope it clears up quickly!
Mary - oh yes, we often would have half the cleaning done before the cleaner would arrive.
Becca - sorry to hear about your DH's toe. Glad HE had it checked out. Hope Owain is on the mend, poor kid. So happy to hear you've been able to make contact with him after the initial long dry spell. Keep on making that well-rounded soup. I am so glad you are in this group, you always cheer me up even when you don't feel so cheery yourself
Wendy - that's right, it's Machka from Canada who now walks upside down, lol. I bet you do have an interesting blend of accents!
Heather - sounds like the painting is moving along and I bet those earrings will be wonderful.
Kate - bet it's good to be home. I looked up your Greek supper dish from last night (can't remember the name right now!) Anyhow, looks like something I'd like to make with the beef and onions. Bet it was yummy.
Machka - I saw a special on Tasmanian Devils the other day! I imagined you biking down the road and seeing these little guys.
Beth - (((HUGS)))) things will eventually settle down into a normal routine. Would you be able to take a little time for yourself in the near future like a spa day with a girlfriend or even a little weekend trip somewhere? A change of pace sometimes helps.

Awe Lanette, love ya! I can say that to everyone here! My safe haven, my digital utopia!
Last night I'm lying in bed and husband told me I hadn't done my daily sit ups and push ups! I'm thinking naa I don't want to! But he persists, and because we always do them in the living room, I grumble, naked and plop on the carpet!! I did 10 more then I normally do, just because I was so peeved!! Course he was giggling because I tooted on the last sit up!!!! Bwahaha! Damn him!
So today for lunch I ate eight Triscuits, with a wedge of tomato, a blob of cottage cheese, and a piece of pepper jack cheese on each Triscuit. I was attentive to putting pepper on cottage cheese, and a couple drips from my favorite dressing (EVOO) on each wedge of tomato. It was good! I then had a couple cubes of watermelon, and a cup of my soup!
Tonight will be something really simple. Maybe my kale mixture sautéed with some EVOO dressing, and leftover Rice a roni.
Love ya ladies!

Hi Gals,
So I just did a disheartening thing – or maybe a motivating thing… I have not needed to dress up in at least 20 years… business casual has been enough; but I may need to wear something more “cocktail” dress for an event at Christmas, - not really my cup of tea – but I got in the back of my closet and pulled out the 2 things I have; the good thing they both are in fine shape and would be ok – the bad thing neither fits… one will take a good long bit of work, the other 5-10 lbs should do it. Which is doable in 2 months + BUT I’ve not been able to figure out how to up my exercise. The two things that stand in my way are money and time….. I live in a crazy expensive part of the country and a “cheap” gym just opened and it is only $55 a month plus $1k annual fee… Not so cheap. The closest Y with a gym is 55 min each way drive away (although free). So I really need to be able to do this on my own.
My legs and arms are in pretty good shape, but my core is in Plump shape - LOL
What I do now is walk the dog 2.5-3 miles a day and garden, I garden about 3 hours 5 days a week, but it is really random, some days are heavy lifting, others not much at all, today I trimmed lavender for 3 hours. Better than 3 hours on the couch but not as much of a burn as the day I moved 60 lb bricks for 3 hours. And on Wednesdays I take a 1 hour yoga class – I LOVE this but it is only offered one day a week at our senior center ($4 a class) everywhere else it is $20 a class…
I got (thanks Barbie!) the Strong Women Stay Young book, but got overwhelmed at how to figure out what weight weights to get and how to do it on a major financial shoestring… and being honest… I only read about 1/3 of the book and decided it was outside of my league from just a finance side. So any hints on how to figure out what weight weights you need? Or where to look for such a thing? I honestly have no idea where to buy weights… It’s all outside of my sphere of knowledge. And I am a big bit afraid I’ll hurt myself if I do try to any weight work, but it seems that it would be the least time commitment.
So I have about $50 saved for something - maybe weights are not the answer, any other suggestions?

Kim, Here is one idea, that I remembered from something Lanette said about keeping fit looking after goats. I sometimes have to carry buckets of water up a small hill to my horse pens. This is the hardest core workout I have ever done, using a $1 bucket filled with water. I have a bucket where I can hold onto the sides, not a handle on the top and I carry it just below my belly button and a little ways out from my body so I don't slosh water on myself. LOL. If i carried water buckets for fifteen minutes a day, I wouldn't need any other weights or have to go to a gym! This totally works my abdominal muscles and strengthens my back and arms. I do have dumbbells at home as well, and sometimes I carry them around just like I do the water bucket, and sometimes I walk up our stairs with them about ten times and that is a great work out. You can figure out all sorts of cheap or free ways to do a weight workout at home without joining a gym or even purchasing many weights. I bought little bars and lots of little weights to put onto the bars, and I just make up my own dumbbells and when they start getting too easy, I add more weights on. I have no idea how heavy they are. I simply go by what they feel like to me. I am heading to my gym today though, so I better finish procrastinating my accounts work, and finish up here! I have been missing my gym workouts and the awesome way I feel afterwards. Craving the buzz... Wendy4
