What suprised me the most recently was Buffalo Wild Wings WHOLE menu. Recently they were required to put the calorie count on everything, which made it easier know what to avoid, but I had a hard time getting out of there under 500 calories.
My BF and I made a pact that we split meals at restaurants now - so we can have what we want and still not over eat. It's really surprising just HOW much food you get in 1 meal. Sometimes now, we don't even finish one.
The naked tenders from BWW aren't bad. 6 tenders for only 280 calories. You could even get them with a side of fries (330) and still come out at 610 calories. Dipping them in buffalo sauce won't add much either. The ranch will kill you though. And the beer.
I ended up getting 4 naked tenders and ate half my BF's fries (the sharing thing wasn't on the table because he wanted all his Buffalitos...). It worked, but I was just amazed by the calorie counts...1 -
Agree on granola. Crazy how high most of it is. Also guacamole and Caesar salad.3

Some of my earliest attempts at "eating healthier" were pretty bad (years before I joined MFP)
I'd been having a granola bar and Diet Pepsi OR
one glazed donut and cup of coffee with flavored creamer and artificial sweetener.
Instead, I started eating a bowl (more than 1 serving, I'm sure) of frosted mini-wheats with 1% milk and about 10 oz of orange juice and a cup of coffee with flavored creamer and agave in it. All that sugar, and more calories. Some may argue that aspects of it were still healthier than before but all I can say is yikes!!
(soon after I started swapping it out for a Chobani blended greek yogurt and coffee with just a splash of milk...way better tasting at least)5 -
Back in the day.... Special K! I could eat a box of the stuff in 2 days. Turns out, a serving is 1/2 cup.....15

Anything before I started counting calories. Now I'm pretty good at guessing. But for sure salads were the one that made me the maddest. You mean I have been ordering a salad to feel "healthy" only to discover I could have had a bacon wrapped steak and potatoes instead? Yeah so may meals wasted!10

I keep re-inputting bread and pizza crust recipes into the calorie counter hoping they have suddenly and mysteriously become low-cal. Danged flour. 365 calories in 100 grams. Sheesh!23

A lot on the VeggieGrill menu is still high in calories. Also, as said, salads. Salads and all their little extra bits that sneak up on you!2
-
Creamy cesar dressing. 1 billion calories per salad.
And burgers. Just plain old beef burgers on a roll blow the doors of my whole calorie day.
Forget loading it up with cheese and bacon. That just isn't happening anymore.
Oh, and hard cider? Yeah, nope. Not anymore. 200 calories a pop. I had 6 over labor day weekend while we were *possibly* day drinking in upstate NY. I'm eating grilled chicken all week to make up for those bad boys.8 -
Hard root beer. 350 calories/bottle. wtf9
-
Since we are on alcohol now...wine. I never really thought much about having a couple two three glasses until I had to log them.9

It's not exactly on topic, but I had a shocking moment about six weeks ago when I realized that bar pours for most beer and cider (or at least the kind I drink) are closer to 16 oz than 12 oz - I'd been tracking those at 12 oz for months, and believe you me, they were accounting for a lot of calories. No wonder it took so long to get into a consistent deficit!10 -

Cider makes me the most sad. It's light! I was hoping it'd be closer to light beer.5 -

Then I'll go ahead and tell you now NOT to drink fruit ciders (eg pineapple).0 -

Cider actually works for me as a "diet" drink because I drink it pretty slow, certainly slower than wine or cocktails, but I definitely hadn't expected it to be quite so high in calories. All that sugar, I suppose.1 -

Cider works for me as a diet drink because I like it, and it doesn't like me, and after half of one I'm in the bathroom for the rest of the evening.5 -
I utterly adore fresh black figs. I found a pint of them in a market and scarfed them down as a healthy snack. Fresh fruit, fiber, it's all good right?
558 calories later and guess who had to skip dinner.
I know, right? I'm a diabetic and figs are just not something I can casually eat anymore. I have to treat them the same way I would a dessert and plan everything else around them.
For me, the calorie shocker was homemade taco night. By the time I've got guacamole, sour cream, and cheese, there are very few calories left over for the actual tacos.10 -

Cider works for me as a diet drink because it's so easy to drink. The more I drink, the more I forget all the food I ate. If I don't remember it, then I don't need to log it. If I didn't log it, then I didn't eat it. So obviously I didn't eat anything.45 -
After 3 ciders I did my first chin up. My arms forgot I'd never done one before and just did it. My triceps are still burning 4 days later.34

I had this broccoli type salad once, it was broccoli, lemon, grilled chicken, quinoa, garlic and a balsamic dressing. It was 800+ calories.
So I go, thats silly, I can make it the same at home for less calories. And I could have if I reduced the portion size (its actually a decent meal but back then I was on very little calories) and it turned out to be like 750 lmao. Delish and worth it now though.3 -
Not a big drinker but I have found that the spiked seltzers are good, and pretty reasonable calories (110 per 12 ounce for the one I drink).1
-
granola
Boston Pizza salads
Anything at Red Robin's
Nuts
Cheese2 -

and how little five ounces fills the glass.8 -
I couldn't believe that eating a handful of cashews could pack such a wallop! The actual MFP serving size is like 11 or 12 cashews...4
-
Vegetable goyza on a bed of white rice.
WAY too many carbs for me...yes, eating low-carb is a medical necessity for me.4 -
Those huge soft pretzels! At the AMC near me they have the calories up & they are around 1100 :-/ I would have previously eaten the entire thing by myself!
... And cereal!!!!!3 -
half and half in my coffee is my downfall-I love coffee with cream.... I did switch to low fat half and half
(nope- not ready for the fat free version- ewwwww)2 -
Are these meals disappointing because they tasted bad? It's sad to think a meal is disappointing just because of the calories...12

It's disappointing when you think it's lower calories than it actually is.16 -
Before I had any sort of knowledge about food I used to choose an apple and cinnamon muffin over a chocolate chip (even though I really wanted the choc-chip) because you know, it has apple must be healthier and therefore less cals. This went on for about 10 years. I was so angry when I discovered I should have just been eating (and enjoying!) the choc chip ones since the apple ones had the same calorie values or more!16

Just about everything ever from a restaurant. Like cool greens and Zoe's kitchen1
