Precious! He sounds like a kid with a good heart. Thanks for sharing, Janet.1 -
DJ Janet #1 - Thanks for keeping my secret. Brayden is so much like his mom, very intelligent and shy but would bring home any and every stray, animal or human.

For anyone thinking about resolutions for the new month or the new year, here are two book recommendations to help:
"Better Than Before" by Gretchen Rubin
"The Four Tendencies" by Gretchen Rubin
The next book I'm waiting to read is "Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics" by Dan HarrisLanette, I don't eat meat but I eat some fish and a lot of eggs also a lot of dairy. Whenever I read about plant based eating, I am inspired until I remember how much I love eggs and dairy.

Hello everyone,
Just read about the last 6 pages. I wasn't on here in December. I did find a new job at the end of November, so I was able to leave the stress of my previous job. I feel like a new person! 24 years at one organization was not easy to walk away from. But I am so happy I took the leap. The traveling and the number of clinics going up on Epic had me working 65+ hours a week. I decided that I was running out of time to make my 2017 goal come true. My word for 2017 was/is Serenity. I finally found it, and I feel so grateful!
I hope to be able to hop on here and keep up with you all more often now that I'm not working day/night/weekends!
Allie, I said a prayer for your dad and I am sending you hugs.
Joyce, I hope you are feeling better and I said a prayer for you also right away.
Penny, your Christmas story was so heartwarming! Thank you for sharing.
I'll have to start thinking about a new word for 2018...and what my goal will be. I love your ideas on here.
I cannot remember who posted the pictures of the quilts/wall hangings but how beautiful!!! I love those trees!
Hugs to all,

Why pork on New Year's Eve? I've never heard of that tradition .... and unless it it spicy pulled pork in a burrito -- ick.
I always heard that this is a German oriented custom. Pork because pigs "root forward" when they eat, showing a desire to move on to the new in the New Year. Usually served with sauerkraut. This was something that my family did as my dad was quite German. My mom and her Swedish background didn't seem to bring any New Year's customs to the family, we had different holidays that we "did Swedish."
Around here it's black-eyed peas and rice. I don't serve it because nobody in my family likes black-eyed peas.
Interesting.
I don't recall my family doing anything special for NYE and yet my grandmothers were German.
My husband and I don't have any food planned for NYE. Just that we'll go to the early fireworks. ☺

It's 12:37 am here and I am exsausted... because of my dad being in hospital I haven't had alot of time with Alfie.so I have gotten about maybe 2 hrs sleep as he is tearing the place apart.i tried putting him in his crate and I don't want him barking And getting the neighbors upset.o have gated off the best I can and have his food, water wee wee pads and toys all within reach...he has been biting and nipping at me all night.
Dad wants all information first before making a decision.he does want to speak with his nataropathhic dr also .. surgeon said surgery isn't immediate but needs to be done soon so he doesn't have a total blockage...
I am working 10-4 tomorrow and have to check in with dad in am. Then go to work,at noon walk the dog,get out at 4 and go to a wake...and find out from there what happens.6 -
I ran my first 7 km run today with new shoes! !!!
I burnt my left foot to the bone in 2001 so was dealing with scar tissue until just a couple years ago when it started loosening off.
Shortly after burning my left foot I developed arthritis in the right. I'm told that was because of all the compensating I was doing. It took me about 3 months after the burn to walk again and I had to go to physio to relearn.
Now I've started developing arthritis in the left foot too.
So I went to a running place where they checked my walk and run and everything and got me into a couple pair to try ... and one just felt better.
Left the shop and went for that run!!

I will be back tomorrow and I will fill you all in on the latest episode of "As the Stomach Churns"
Terry - The necklace is a beautiful and thoughtful gift.
Karen - Olivia has the best smile!
Allie - Hugs and prayers for your Dad and for you.
Joyce - Prayers and thoughts are with you. Be better soon, my friend.
Wendy - Sending hugs your way. What is wrong with people? I respect your decision not to let anger over take you.
Barbara - Crokinole is played on a huge eight-side board. You flick wooden chips and try to land them in the bull's eye. You score points depending on where you land and you always try to knock the opponent's chips off. I love it but sometimes my fingers get sore.
Evelyn - You are a Crafty lady. Loving the wall hangings and the blanket.
Margaret - Nice painting of my favourite Christmas bird.
Lanette - "My Pillow" did not work for us but my DB and DSIL swear by theirs.
I don't know how I could ever get Larry medically evaluated until he hurts himself or others. I don't think talking to him about it is an option since I am always "the only one with a problem" around here.
-Sharon in Lethbridge (It's white and freezing outside and inside I feel like my heart is freezing)7 -
Sharon - Big hugs for you. Have you tried talking to your own doctor about options? You definitely need to get professional advice, both legal and medical. There must be phone lines /charities that can help you. I always turn to books for advice and Amazon can be a great resource. Just waiting it out is not an option. It is really bad for your health and therefore the other people you love in your life, like your grandchildren. You owe it to them.
DJ - My husband's quiz was a more cerebral affair, that he creates every year, but the 5 second thing was a game my step daughter bought off Amazon. We didn't follow all the rules, but really had such a laugh! It's basically just a pile of cards with name three things on them. For example, name three towns in your county. 5 seconds is not long and the timer made really stupid noises and we had had quite a bit to drink. Riotous fun!
Today my task is to make the ragu and we will have some tonight with straw sweet potato oven fries and broccoli. Freeze some and keep some for the zucchini lasagna.
In England there is no special food for New Year, but in Scotland they have Black Bun, which is a kind of fruit cake/pudding baked in pastry. Very heavy!
It is traditional in Scotland to toast the NY with whisky, but here it is more likely to be champagne, as it will be in our house.
I have made a lunch date with my new yoga friend for tomorrow. Just our local pub. Coffee first and see what we feel like. I always feel making a new good friend is a bit like getting a new boyfriend. I am very pleased that this relationship seems to be going well. We seem to be progressing from, just good friends, to a more intimate, committed thing, but it is still very "threshold". Very hard to make close friends as you get older, I feel. I do love my female friends.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx5 -
I got my internet back!Machka[/b] - thank you as well for your photos and description of your walks. Glad the cherries made it through the windstorm - how are did the other fruits fare? Saag paneer sounds delicious!
I've been researching vegan recipes and working on a plan to incorporate a lot more fruits and green veggies into my diet, cutting back on the dairy and meat/animal protein which I normally don't eat a lot of anyhow except for eggs.
The saag paneer might be an option for you ... it's all veggies with paneer (a cheese that is surprisingly low calorie). You can also make it with tofu, but I prefer paneer.
The recipe I've posted tells you to do just spinach, but I added sweet potato plus a little bit of carrot and cauliflower.

Ladies - new topic here. I need pillow suggestions....
About 4 years ago, we bought a new bed - a European King - and when we were testing mattresses, I laid down on one and had my head on the pillow and was the most comfortable I think I've ever been in a bed. We not only bought the mattresses, but I also bought the pillow! They did give us a discount on the pillow, so it was about a $100 memory foam for us ... about double that normally.
It has been a fabulous pillow, but just lately it has started to flatten a bit. I'm just not quite prepared to pay $200 for another one.
But nevertheless, you might want to visit a mattress shop and see what they've got for pillows and you can actually try them!

Since I moved to Australia in 2009, I have not had a tumble dryer.
It can be very challenging to dry the sheets and towels, you've really got to pick your day! Yesterday was a great towel drying day -- warm, sunny, with a bit of wind. I'm hoping that tomorrow or Sunday might be a good sheet drying day. If not, I'll have to wait till next weekend to do the sheets.

New Year's Eve and Day Traditions that I grew up with:
*Must have the Christmas tree put away by NY's Day
*Eat black eyed peas and greens for money
*Head of the House must be the first to enter
*Don't wash clothes on NY's Day or you'll be washing all year

Interesting!
In my family, we don't take the Christmas decorations down until after Orthadox Christmas (January 7th) ... after all some believe that the 12 days of Christmas are the 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6. I think some believe the 12 days of Christmas are before, but I grew up with the idea that they were after. So we continue to celebrate Christmas right up to and including January 7th.
Since I've been in Australia, I usually leave my Christmas decorations up till just before Australia Day, and this time will be no different. I'll be really busy for a couple weeks in the middle of the January, so the decorations will stay up till toward the end.
I've adopted a modified Orthadox Christmas Eve meal ... the meatless meal ... on January 6th as well. I do some of the dishes, but not all 12! And sadly we can't get a lot of the stuff here in Australia.
The end of the year (now) is often a mad dash to get in a few more kilometres of walking or cycling ... not so much for my husband (although he will do it too, if he has the time), but definitely for me and some of my friends. Then January 1st is a big exercise day. If we can, we'll ride a really long distance ... this January 1, we won't (just had a chat to my tired husband about that), but we are planning to get something of a bicycle ride in. Sometimes, I go out for a ride at about 11:30 pm and ride through to the new year until about 12:30 am. Some years I go for a walk then.
And of course, fireworks on New Year's Eve.

We traditionally keep our decs up until 12th Night. - Jan 6th. I can't wait to see the back of them, so might get them down earlier. Everyone admired my fairy (string) lights. I leave the heart shaped ones in the kitchen up all year.
