PastorVincent wrote: »@_nikkiwolf_ I never even looked at those numbers before. I guess I have been on the net too long because I just assumed there were cheaters/lairs in the top rankings and never bothered. The only leaderboard I look at is MFP. Pretty sure none of us is faking it. Though I frankly am amazed at how FLAT some of y'all... okay most of y'all's runs are! My flattest run for training is like 500 feet of elevation, and that is only if I deliberately route around the hills (sometimes they are not passable). Some of y'all somehow can run for miles and have only double digits... amazing.
Ha, I look at the elevation maps for my runs and they are so flat the (very) slight hills don't even register. I guess it is just part of living in the Prairies! If it is warmer next weekend I actually plan to drive to the River Valley to find some hills for my long run just so I don't die during my half marathon in April... which is in the mountains...
I have also been contemplating running up and over and down the toboggan hill behind my condo - both along the x and the y axis... but there's too much ice on it right now and I don't have screw shoes.5 -

Big Hairy Audacious Goal: Sub 4 hours in Pittsburgh 2018!
Official Marathon PR: 4:11:28
Next Races (more as I find them):
03/17/18 - Shamrock Shuffle Half Marathon + 5k + 1mile
04/07/18 - Achilles 9.3 Challange (10k and 5k back to back)
05/06/18 - Pittsburgh Marathon - aiming for sub four hours.
05/12/18 - Glacier Ridge 50k Trail Ultra (I must hate myself)
2020 - Disney World Dopey! (if can raise funds)
My fast "8-12 mile" run to date, and I did it 100% uphill. Sticking with my plan during these dreary months to use dreadmill for speed work. Treadmill registered 10 miles, but Garmin footpod claims 10.21 miles. So something around there Short term goal is 13.1 miles uphill at 7.5MPH.7 -
02/05/2018: C25K - Week 5 Day 3
Day 3 is 20 minutes of running (between warm-ups/cool down) and I nailed it; I was slow as he l l but who cares!! I have always quit before this day (or while trying to do it) and to finish it today was so rewarding! (BTW, I'm excluding walking minutes/miles from my February totals). You are all so inspiring to me!
@Link2Life
Yaaaaay! You are awesome!

February 2018 runs:
02 Feb – 6.3 km fartleks
04 Feb – 35 km
06 Feb – 6.2 km
08 Feb – 10 km
Total: 57.5 km
Monthly Distance Goal: 160 km
2nd Goal: A 35 km run – DONE!!
My Fenix 5 said it was 27 Celsius (80 F) on my 10 km run this morning.
I was battling with myself... should I just do 5 km? Got that far, then it was, should I just do 7...? Happy I made it to 10.7 -
@_nikkiwolf_ , @juliet3455, @PastorVincent, @rheddmobile - I have seen people cheating in challenges on MapMyRun too and there is not a way to report on it that I know of. I finally stopped participating because it isn't a challenge or fun when people are posting 20+ mile daily runs 7 days a week for months. That may be possible for someone but not likely for a woman in her 60's and if there is one able to do that I would expect to see her written up in RunnersWorld! @7lenny7 - yes, there is a way to edit workouts in MMR. I have done it both ways; to fix an error where I forgot to turn it off and also to correct a distance and time when it failed to start... in fact I did that this morning.
@Link2Life - Congratulations!
@Starflight00 - I'm no expert and have never tried to run after a 24 hour+ fast like that, but I suspect your legs felt heavy because there was no glycogen to feed your muscles. I have read that if you run fasted (just not eating in the morning after a normal meal the night before) you will burn more fat. However I have also read that you have to be careful because it can also cause your body to lose muscle by using it as a protein source.
@girlinahat - I can't just run 2 miles either - it takes me that long to get warmed up and feeling like it will be a good run or not... this is also why I don't run 5k's. I hope you get your test results soon!
@PastorVincent - even where I am in So Cal I have no hills other than freeway overpasses unless I want to drive somewhere to run. There is one hill about 4 miles away that I do run to on occasion in my long run to get a hill workout in. It is a really tough one too and I really need to do it more often!
@abutcher2122 - I think California drivers are the absolute worst when it comes to pedestrians and stop signs! I guess that is why they call rolling through one (stop sign, hopefully not a pedestrian) a California stop! @katharmonic - I have come very close to throwing a bag of poop at drivers who don't stop when I am in the crosswalk. Also working at home watching the snow fall sounds wonderful!
@lporter229 - I hope you feel better and are able to fight off whatever it is before it gets going!
@Teresa502 - The HM start picture is hilarious!
I woke up to thick fog and drizzle this morning and was so excited to get out for a run. By the time I sat through my meetings though it was mostly gone and the sun was breaking through. I did get out for 5miles of slow, recovery run with little stopping except for Hobbes the Vizsla to do his business. We did stop to talk to some construction workers on the trail to find out that they are expanding the bathrooms and extending the trail a few more miles north! Yay!! While talking to them a beautiful osprey flew out of the basin, right over us, circled and dove back in apparently going after a fish. I couldn't see where he came up so I don't know if he actually got one but I have seen it before. Just a bit further on the trail going home I saw another osprey (or the same one) just soaring around and around - so huge and incredibly beautiful! I also saw a large group (multiple flocks?) of pelicans flying toward the river. I counted 50 but there were likely more. I guess they all just wanted to enjoy the cooler moist morning!

So I've gone on only 1 run this week. Since it was my birthday, the Super Bowl, and the last days before the first round of college exams, this last weekend was pretty crazy. There was lots of studying, lots of partying, and lots and lots of food.
I went out yesterday and had pretty much the worst run ever. I ate too much food, too soon before my run, hadn't had any water, didn't properly warm up - I was a hot mess! So I ended it at about 2.5 miles feeling defeated. Running is humbling.
Needless to say I got a little off track from my goals, but I am ready to hop back on the bandwagon. I retook my RHR this morning the proper way, and found out I was way off from what I had previously thought. It was about 60 bpm - which makes so much more sense! Now I can finally figure out my target heart rate for runs!
I am planning on doing some strength training tonight and go on a short 30 minute run. Hopefully everything will go better than yesterday!

@dreamer12151 I was out around the same time, i usually like to be halfway thru my run by that time but i woke up late.
@7lenny7, the car was making a left hand turn so i was actually already in the cross walk when said douche made the turn which is why i assume it could have been on purpose. I actually run with my headlamp in my streethand hand and when i come to an intersection/crosswalk i switch it to my red flashers.1 -
@PastorVincent That thought did cross my mind and then i thought hey i might be able to outrun them if they did happen to pull over but i did book it for a quick minute just in case. lol
@katharmonic I would have thrown a poop bag as well. If I have something to throw/defend myself i surely will.
@shanaber Im not gonna lie, i do the california stop if theres no pedestrians or im the only car. When i lived in Denver i got pulled over once and the cop was like, "California stops dont fly around here" lol.2 -
@weat0043 Injuries suck! I hope your ankle heals ASAP!
@PastorVincent Dallas is so flat, I have to resort to running up and down multi-storey parking lots to do 'hills' locally, lol.
@Link2Life Congrats on cracking Day 3; that's awesome!
Today's run was the third consecutive day of running reasonable distances, and my calves could certainly feel it. I've also been assured that the other runners in the group are going to be running tomorrow, so that means that my legs should get a little respite tomorrow with a slower pace and reduced mileage; that will most certainly be welcome!
It was also a pretty run this morning...it had rained during the night and then frozen over, so icicles were hanging from everything, and the iced-up trees glistened in the lights. Oddly enough, there was no ice on the paths, which were dry; well, there wasn't ice until I got to the footbridges, which were all completely iced over, so I had to cross those with extra care. The first bridge wasn't until the fourth mile, and was in darkness, and given how dry the paths were it took me a little by surprise to feel my foot lose grip completely. And that about sums up the extent of winter in Texas; sometimes there maybe an ice storm, and if we're really lucky a little snow, but for the most part it's just cold wind and ice.

Just a quick 2 miles today. I thought about not going out because cold and we just got back from Costco and my hands weren't warm yet. But by the time I decided not to run I had half my gear on and we'll, that's how that happened. I wore about a half layer too many on top tonight - erred on the side of caution since I had a thinner base layer. It didn't seem to slow me down much though. Strava says I'm trending faster... I would guess because I get bored on the treadmill and play around with my speed.

Yesterday was just a cold, cloudy yucky day so I decided not to run on Tuesday and I will run on Friday when the weather should be nice. It was still cold today, but the sun was shining so I bundled up and went for my run. I decided to try my first attempt at a Tempo Run. I'm not 100% sure if I did it right, but I gave it a shot. I ran the first mile easy about 11:59 and the next 2 at a harder pace of 10:15 and 10:03 and then slowed back down to 11:33. The last .4 miles was not really part of the run. I just misjudged my distance and I was further away from home when I finished and since I had somewhere to be I ran instead of walking so I could get home quicker.
@sarahthes I have seen you post a few times about wimping out because of the cold and not runnung outdoors. All I can say is you are no wimp. I don't know how you ever leave the house in the winter. I am definitely a wimp when it comes to cold weather. I am always impressed at how you and some of the others run in the cold.
@Link2Life Congrats on c25k week 5 day 3!
@girlinahat I hope you get good results on yiur throat.

02.07-7.16k Total-22.5k
Been working on a shiny new running form recently, which seems to make me quite a bit faster than I used to be. Went out for two 2k fast (?) intervals plus warm up/cool down/recovery for a total of 7k. Can't hold the right posture for any longer than 2 measly km but it's a start.
Races in the foreseeable future:
03.18 HM Chengdu
@PastorVincent I wish I had more hills where I live. The biggest hill I can reasonably run regularly is a bridge! Makes training for trails nearly impossible.
@kgirlhart That sounds like a pretty good tempo, great work.
@girlinahat It takes me forever to warm up too, most of the time I'm only just getting into it at the 2 mile (3k) mark.7 -
Today 5.04 miles on the treadmill

@Link2Life Congrats!! Push through that wall and keep going. You got this!1

So my wife was like "I ran 19 miles but my feet hurt the whole time and my knees most of it."
So I was like, "let me see them there shoes."
WELL. The shoes were horribly worn out, but only on the outside of the foot. So I was like "Well there's your problem" and took her to a running store (Mojo Running) and handed her old Nikes (that she got because they were pink, and on a clearance table...) to the guy and was like "Get her something better, stat!"
He took one look at the shoes and was like "Do your knees hurt when you run?" heh. You think?
So he pulled out a bunch of shoes and now she has brandy new Brooks GTS 18!
I then put my old Milestone Pod on it so I can track the miles on them, and maybe get her to change them a bit sooner... the old shoes were so worn/compressed on the one side that they did not even sit flat anymore.

Wow, this moves fast! And I mostly read it on my bus commute on the phone--replying is tricky but I'm grateful for all of the perspectives on carrying water--it definitely broadened my view. And thanks @7lenny7 for the tips on cadence and speed!
Evening kid stuff put me on the treadmill today and my earbuds were out of juice--I only lasted for 2.5 of the 4 miles I'd hoped for. But I had a really nice well-paced and dry (I'm in Seattle) 3 mile run last night outside, so it I wasn't too disappointed.6 -
@shanaber the collective noun for a group of pelicans can be ‘squadron’, ‘pod’ or ‘scoop’.3

2 runs completed this week, and already eclipsed January's total.
2/4....5 miles run outdoors...29 degrees. This is the coldest weather I have ever run in. There were snow flurries but no accumulation. My ankle felt okay. Going to try to build on it.
2/6...7.18 miles on the treadmill. It was totally boring. I worked at keeping my heart rate in the zone, and was able to do it for 40 minutes. Worked up a sweat. Had planned to lift weights but will save it for later this week. Noted that the gym wasn't crowded.
This week I refinanced my husband's van. Also worked on getting recertified in CPR. Lots of task-y stuff that I needed to get done this week.
My husband has been having some health issues. He has lower extremity edema, and is on a water pill (lasix). His blood work is all normal...so perplexing. He has been having trouble sleeping when laying flat...stated that he can't breathe. Super scary....so my mind hasn't been on running except to relieve stress.10 -

3.5 very slow miles this morning. Woke up about 10 mins late (4:25am instead of 4:15am, lol) and debated even going. But then I remembered how much I'd hate myself for not going because I don't know what's happening after school today. So I cut my stretching routine short and headed out. You never regret exercise!

Was hoping to get out and get in 5 miles; i think i turned off my alarm when it first went off cuz i woke up 2 hours later than i had planned but i did get in a slow and steady 5K

I think I'm gonna have to suck it up and get on the dreaded dreadmill for today's run. Ugh. I used to be able to run miles on that thing, no big deal, and did most of my run training on it. Then I had an injury break, and when I came back I was doing the majority of my running outside, and now just the thought of the treadmill depresses me. But, we have a frozen mess outside, and the temp will not be getting above freezing today, and I don't have screw shoes, and I don't want to risk injury. So, I'm planning on hitting the gym after work. Blah. BUT, gotta get the miles in!
Kudos to everyone's runs, pushing through tough conditions/circumstances, and just generally kicking *kitten*!6 -
-
It's definitely going to be a treadmill run for me tonight. We had freezing rain last night and the temperatures aren't going to get above freezing today. I'm not risking an outdoor run seeing as I've got a 5k race on Saturday morning.

Very limited in where I can safely run right now though. Looks like I will be looping through my office park again, since that's the safest place with the least amount of traffic. *sigh* Winter, please go away...9 -

Question for ya'll (I'm the newbie here doing C25K). I wear a Garmin VIvoactive HR watch which records my heart rate and have premium Endomondo so I can see the zones i'm in. During my 20 minute run yesterday, my HR was hovering around 160bpm peaking around 175bpm. I was breathing fast but i never felt out of breath and I could've kept going. My max HR per the old calculation is 175 but i've gone over that and still didn't feel like I was close to expiring. (ha). My resting HR has dropped from about 65 to 60 since January 1.
So..should I slow down even more (i'm only going 5.2-5.5mph ) or not really fuss too much over the higher heart rate during my runs?
I could hook up my strap monitor to see if there's a variation but I've found my watch to fairly accurate, surprisingly, unless the treadmill is interfering....
Here's the stats from my 20 minute run0
