And I got a QOM!!

My goal this month is to avoid exercise while I get over this Typhoid Fever. (I can't push myself, I need to get better). It has been amazing for weight loss though - I think that's because I have had a quite restricted diet (eg no dairy, no alcohol). So my second goal is to maintain some of these new restrictions throughout the whole month. I also want to join the next "10 days" thread, because atm I need to focus on one day at a time and mini-goals. Every night I am craving chocolate and if I can break this evening sugar-craving this month, that would be awesome. I think the way to break it is to avoid sugar in the evenings. I have to do it one day at a time. I don't know so much as which foods constitute as sugars, and I am wondering if subbing with fruit will help or just make the problem linger. So I guess I have 3 goals:
1) maintain my restricted diet
2) continue with homecooking
3) no evening "sugars"
Here's to a successful February!4 -
Happy Saturday! Was proud of myself yesterday at work, just a day full of meetings (no students) but had time to get a lot of prep and paper work done when I was by myself. Usually the negative/toxic work folks bring me down or stress me out so much I binge eat---not this time
My micro actions are key to getting me out of my procrastinating ways. I asked a good friend (a composer and organist that I respect greatly) to look over my program notes and he said yes, so I have a plan to have someone edit my writing, and have a new earlier deadline to put the notes together for him. phew!
For some reason the scale this morning has me back to maintenance weight! hooray, that took awhile but I'll take it from here. I think dairy is disagreeing with me, so I am backing away from my homemade yogurt and cottage cheese intake. I will have to substitute oatmeal and nuts and or more fruit and nuts to start the day.
I'm upping my steps at the gym in prep of our upcoming trip to Rome, my friends are so excited for us, but warn us of pickpockets!! Yikes, this new yorker would be pretty ticked off if that happened

Eminater - where do you live? Typhoid Fever sounds terrible!
If you are logging into the MFP food diary, you can select seeing your sugar intake. I think it's set up to track calories, fat, carbs and protein (I can't remember) but I was able to reset it and now track calcium intake, sugar, fiber, protein. It's not set up to track added sugars (like from candy), but does give you an idea of how much "natural" sugar is in fruit, dairy, etc.
Good luck!

Allie, good for you in going to the alanon meeting. I don’t know what’s involved in opening and closing the meeting, but that probably would have sent me running.
I’m not really worried about the whole skin cancer thing. It’s more the inconvenience of it all. There are worse things that could be wrong with me. Barbara, I may be remembering it wrong, but I believe my doc sidelined me for two weeks when I had Mohs on my face, not work, but weight training and fast walking. I could be confusing it with the time she took a cyst off my breast. I popped a stitch with that one by not following her directions. It seems like I’ve been spending way too much time in the dermotologist’s office lately.
Have any of you heard of Schluter? It’s some kind of high dollar thing they put behind your tile. One of the people I’m considering swears by it. The other says it’s just an added expense and the “old-school” methods work just as well. We don’t know which to believe. We are supposed to get our last estimate by email today. This could happen as early as Thursday if we go with the “must have Schluter” guy. The other would be mid-March, which still isn’t bad.
I’m up early to go to a conference Lay servant meeting on the other side of Atlanta. Could I be so lucky as for all of Gwinnett County to sleep in? I hate that stretch of the interstate. Well, y’all have a good one!4 -
Katie - If you search for "reviews of Schluter," you get some interesting commentary on it, most of it quite good for its impermeability to leaks.
Barbie - thank you, as always.
Lenora - I, too, missed the reason for the black eye and broken wrist. Hope you're doing better.
So... I came out of January a total of eight pounds lighter than I went in. Still sticking to the regimen, and actually ate a vegetable yesterday. Considering I hate most vegetables, it's a triumph.
On the personal front, our son is struggling. Long story short, he's in culinary school in Denver (paid for by the current version of the GI Bill), where his uncle (from his birth mom's side) got him into an apartment that he probably won't be able to continue to afford. His baby's mama either has or is getting a warrant out for his arrest for unpaid child support. I told him months ago that, by law, he had to have child support taken out of his unemployment (after they released him, due to his mental health, from the Air Force). He ignored the advice. Now he's regretting every life choice he's ever made, and just lost his part-time job. Apparently, they pulled him into the office and asked him how he was doing, and he burst into tears. They told him he needed his mental health more than the job and let him go.
I can't help him. And that hurts. But I cannot. I've already sent him a little money so he can eat, and last night, he was drinking wine and smoking when we talked to him--so he's making bad choices on that front, too. And he's making suicide threats, to both me and his sister. This is their birth mother's weapon of choice, by the way. There are no good answers, and I'm a fixer, and that bothers me a lot. But I can't fix him. He has to want to be better.
And, because it put us all on edge last night, and the two-year-old had to go in the afternoon for a booster shot, everybody was a little cranky. So Corey and I retired to our little room upstairs, and watched Brit-coms (Are You Being Served is a particular favorite) until we both fell asleep on the couch, and then dragged ourselves to bed. If you have Amazon prime, they have an all-British telly video channel, and you can get a free 7-day access.
Love y'all,
Lisa in NC8 -
Kay ~ Good luck on your travels on the interstate. I am so glad I don't have to make the trips from Marietta to Forsyth, GA to see my mom. Although I miss her dearly, I don't miss the traffic.
Never heard of Schluter. My son had a contractor he met through his AA group do his bathroom. The new tub looks great but they were not happy with the work the tile man did.
2 -
Allie, bravo to you for going to Al-Anon. You could add a lot to your life if you continued to go and got a sponsor and took the Steps and used the program in your life.
Lisa, sorry to hear about what's going on with your son. You are so right that you can't help him. That is so hard for those of us who want to help.
The water is off this morning. We wisely have collected gallons of water in case of emergency so we can wash our hands and flush the toilet and also have bottles of water to drink or for making coffee but it's Saturday before daylight and the neighborhood emergency guy has his phone off so there's no telling when there will be water. It makes me grateful that I routinely shower every day so if I miss this morning, it won't be a crisis.

I am currently in Malaysia. Tonight I pretty much just ate a mandarin after dinner and then brushed my teeth. This worked in terms of removing my current cravings for chocolate. These cravings are fairly new ... I am trying "one day at a time", I think I think that'll sort it out.fingers crossed, thanks for the tip. I am currently tracking Iron, Calcium, Protein, can't remember what else. My blood sugar is usually low / ok, it's just this evening cravings are annoying!5 -

Woke up with a runny nose, scratchy throat. Added lemon zest and cayenne to am tea, all better now. Thanks Anna from T'ai Chi for the recipe and the home grown lemon!
Knees, grr. Last night my left knee wanted to play tricks at line dancing. Tried doing just one more dance and that worked for awhile, then it gave out and I nearly fell. Changed shoes, got ready to leave while class continued, but they played a song I really like so danced in my street shoes with no knee pain. Now what the heck is with THAT? last night and this morning after meditation did two of the knee exercises from long ago. Time to build a daily habit, chain to meditation.
Annieguz sitting in traffic 2 hrs/day? Yuck! Do you do shoulder stretches to keep the road rage down? :}
Becca love "eat like a healthy person" may copycat you. Dang, you are cute! 3 cats in a box made me smile BIG.
Pam in WA, Welcome! Zumba 5 days/week, class or DVD?
Wendy Super blue blood moon hospital weirdness indeed. Cannot imagine waiting for surgery in a hallway. ;{
Sharon "Hudson Bay Store" hahahaha ! The image in my mind was of the SF Bay when it was like silk. Loved the bunch of bananas idea, maybe it can be your parting gift... with a snap of him as the "top banana". What a jerk.
Welcome Ann. "hard time getting motivated" me too sometimes. The gals on this thread are the most motivating.
Kelly love "less in body, more in spirit"...at first I mistyped "less in booty" which is true too. So jealous of your therapy pool, I loved the one back in Idaho.
cowgirl and CC, welcome
Cheryl so very sorry for the loss of your horse, what a horrible thing to happen.
Allie I can just see Alfie watching "Puppy Bowl" So glad you have this joy in the midst of all the sadness.
Sue in WA ((hugs)). Sorry for your losses and that your DH is not taking good care of himself. Terry is right, PT it is crucial for good knee surgery results. Belated Best Birthday wishes. Hope you can pamper yourself a little. New puppy kisses are good medicine for aching hearts.
Diana in TN welcome. Any hints on the hula hoop would be welcome. I could do it as a kid but can NOT get it to stay up now.
Martha welcome back! You've got this.
Rachel Welcome. Good for you for working with a trainer, logging in mfp, moving in new ways. It's bound to have good effect.
Amy in Az welcome. That's impressive lifting in just a few months. Wow!
pip OMG what happened? Lanette mentioned accident, it must have been a doozy?
Kate Grateful your DD's ulcer can be treated with antacids. . . tho' it seems odd to be grateful for an ulcer
DrKatybug When I had Mohs (on my face) I was back to work the next day. Looked like a pirate that had been beaten in a barroom brawl, but was able to work. Hope you'll be able to continue walking, strength etc. Even better would be a benign result from additional samples...
cathy Beautiful cruise dress!
Lenora glad to hear from you even though you've been struggling. How did you break your wrist?
Janetr "filling our cups..." well said!
Theresa You are not a wimp! Recovering from pneumonia always takes longer than you want. Take it easy and keep warm until you are completely well. Relapses stink.
Blew the max 20 mins per pc session . . . again.
Mindful hugs to all,

on Kirby's bday on 7-10-15 we were in Vegas and I fell down stairs while going over the strip on some of those overpass stairs from excalibur to the other side, don't remember a thing, then maybe about.a month or so later, Kirby got hit by a car while driving his bike home on his usual route. spent 17days in the hospital. that the real short story of it :0)4 -
Lisa - Sooooooo hard. It sounds as if he inherited a lot of his birth mum's genes and not your husband's.
We did a quick tidy up this morning and then went off to the pub. The food was excellent, but they took a long time to serve us and then they turned on the TV for the rugby. It was LOUD. I asked them to turn it down, but it wasn't enough for me. I complained again and it was a little better. It wasn't even the match, but the pre match waffle! Grrrrrrrrrr!
Did a good shop afterwards. Duck legs from the butcher and lots of fishy things from the fishmonger. Veggies from the farm shop and everything else from the small supermarket . We also took two books to the charity shop.
So all good. We drove back to find the viewers still there, so we went to our local pub and I had a tomato juice. Came back and one car was there, so we did another tour of the village and eventually decided enough was enough.
The estate agent was still waiting for the next clients, who were late, so we said we couldn't wait any longer and just came inside. Then the late clients turned up, so we showed them round ourselves. I'm sure they don't intend to buy. They seemed totally unfocused. But the previous ones that the agent showed round really liked the place, she said. She said she loved it herself.
So we shall see.
Now to make a cup of tea.

Heather: Congratulations on the exercise and the upcoming viewings. Keeping my fingers crossed for good luck. :flowerfroyou:
wessecg: The photos are beautiful. A friend invited me along on a trial ride last fall. She and her DH have Tennessee Walkers. Oh My! That was the sweetest ride I've had in recent memory, and maybe ever. Her pair are in their mid to late twenties and enormous, but they are sweet and responsive. The horse I usually ride, Arrow, is an unwilling pill. :ohwell:
Dr. Katie: I'm sending good thoughts your way. I hope the procedure is 100% successful, uncomplicated and doesn't interfere with you getting a bit of exercise. :flowerforyou:
KJ: So sorry your daughter's trip to visit you has been postponed. Thank goodness she wasn't hurt.
(((Lenora))) I hope you feel better soon.
Janet OKC: What a wonderful message. It resonates with me, too. :flowerforyou:
DJ: Love you right back.
Sharon in Lethbridge: Sending hugs your way and would include energy if I could. (((HUGS)))
We are enjoying our time with our new grandson & I'm out f time for posting right now. I'll check back later.

Drkatiebug ... yes, old=school ways work, but advanced in technology have the potential of making things better. In everyone of our bathroom remodels, we've found evidence of water leaks in the older installations so we've gone with the latest technology available. I'd seriously consider Schulter.
Lisa ... so sorry to hear of your son's difficulties ...
Eminater ... hope you feel better soon!
I didn't sleep well at all last night thinking about the earlier conversation my husband and I had with our son's primary social service agency. I've devoted 32 years to seeing that my son not be lumped together with every other disability regardless of severity and that his abilities take precedence over his disabilities. But the truth is there are very few housing options for individuals like my son ... in fact, his current situation is considered an anomaly in the state ... and the only thing being offered is a group home and then only if there's a spot available. The current landlord of my son's house is looking to sell it to the state so they can turn it into a group home. My son has begged me to bring him back home before a group home is ever considered. It's a lot like thinking about putting a family member in a nursing home, against their will, when they're completely coherent but they just don't move around well. And my husband, whom I know is only trying to think realistically about the future and the fact we're aging, is strongly leaning towards the group home. I'm just sick about it and so very, very mad that our insane governor wants to give iPads to every prison inmate so they can order their dinners from their cells when there are so many more pressing needs. The agency told me that there are disabled people in our area that have been waiting for housing for over 10 years!

Can't believe it but last night I forgot to drink the half beer saved from lunch. SMH and amazed.
eminator great goals! Take it easy until you are completely well.
NYKaren Rome! I'm excited for you too!
Allie Brava! Instead of curling up and hiding, you take steps every day to do what needs doing. Brava!
DrKatiebug Ouch! Sending thoughts of good traffic karma your way.
Lisa ditto what Barbie said so well, and Heather's genetic component comment. Does he have access to any kind of mental health/suicide prevention care? Would he go?
kmcdonnell welcome!
pip O M G you two are survivors!
Beth Appalling that people have to wait so long for disabled but independent living housing. You'd think some bright entrepreneur would see the market and start converting or building. Perhaps the profit is just too high for non-adapted construction?
Way past time to get up and move. Flunking the 20 min limit, but get so interested in what's going on in all your lives... nope can't blame it on you... my life, my choices, must live with the results.

Lisa - First, way to go on the weight loss! So glad you have found what works for you. That's what I love so much about this group, we all have different needs and paths to health. Second, how sad about your son. I hope he can find some help and get back on an even keel. Third, thank you so much for letting us know about a week's worth of free British TV on Amazon Prime. I'm looking at the Acorn offerings right now, trying to figure if we'll watch $4.99 worth of shows per month. Think I'll clear my busy schedule and sign up for the free week.
Beth - I am sure you have considered every possible solution, but hopefully, given a little time and space, something suitable will surface. I don't blame you for being miffed. Seems like the needy seniors and disabled, like the vets, become invisible to the legislators. Happens in our state, too, and is maddening.
Barbie - I hope your water is back on! Smart thinkin' getting showered and having some water in reserve. Unless there's a main break somewhere that's going to take some big digging, they should be able to get it back on within a reasonable amount of time.
Heather - it will be interesting to see if you get an offer from your first viewers! Or surprisingly, even your second viewers.... stranger things have happened.
Barbara in S Oregon - I get so tickled at you trying to limit your time checking the happenings with this group. I am getting worn out by the internet it seems and all the blah blah they think I should read and be interested in. But, this group is a priority!
Katla - glad you are having a good time! What day are you arriving back home?
Kate - hope the antacids do the trick for your DD's ulcer.
KJ - sorry about your daughter's accident and the cancelled spring visit. And your knee giving you a little grief. So frustrating when our "walking parts" aren't working right.
I made an appointment with the foot doctor for Tuesday. I want to know if the swelling and pain behind my toes is arthritis that I just have to deal with and if so, are there insoles or orthotics I can put in my shoes so I can walk/run again without limping the rest of the day. I have a hunch it might be related to a cortisone shot I had there a couple years ago. We'll see. In the meantime, rubbing some ointment from the "green store" helps the pain, but not the swelling.
Have a good Saturday everyone!

Hello All. I'm just getting started so my next goal is to put into practice all that I can. Be mindful of what I am eating and doing. Be happy and at peace with myself. All is well and lets do this.
By the way, awesome posts! Looking forward to getting to know you.

Lisa, so sorry to hear of your son's issues. You are right, you can't fix him, but hopefully knowing that he has you and his dad to give him support will help. I don't mean that you should send him a bunch of money, that sounds like it would be a bad idea, but just being there to talk to him. Or listen to him. Interesting question, would he go to counselling? Would he be able to get that paid for from his time in the Air Force? {{{HUGS}}} Not an easy situation.
Congrats on the weight loss!
Beth, so sorry about your son also. Keeping you and him in my thoughts, sure hope a solution can be found. I totally understand your hubby's reluctance to have him at home, what will happen when one or both of you pass on? Will he be back in the same situation? Is there some kind of housing available where he could just have someone come in to make his meals and do any personal care that he needs? Or is that what you're looking for now? Could a regular apartment or condo be adapted for him? I'm just thinking about some of the options we have in Canada, don't know what's available where you are.
Heather, good luck with the showings! Most annoying that the people were running late.
We live in a townhouse, there are 10 units in total. We have no on "street" parking, we all have two car garages and are expected to use them. The only time our vehicles are allowed on the "street" is if we are cleaning them or are right there. This is because this is also an emergency lane, so if an emergency vehicle needs to get in there, the way can't be blocked. So, our neighbour across the way has put his unit up for sale. His realtor comes by a few days ago and parks right in front of OUR garage! Not in front of the unit that he's trying to sell, which would make more sense, but ours! Hubby had an appointment, so he went over and told the guy that visitor parking is "over there". His reply? "Oh, I didn't see it". Really?? We have 6 visitor spaces, they all have "visitor parking" painted in them and the paint is pretty new, so it's pretty visible. Hubby and I have made note of his name and will NOT be recommending him to anybody, ever! Twit..... I do feel compelled to also point out that the potential buyer of the property managed to find the visitor parking, so it's just the realtor that's an idiot. Okay, rant over! Thanks for listening!
Pip, that's quite the collection of ribbons you two have! Thanks for the info about your injuries, I heard a bit about them shortly after I joined, but having some of the details now helps. And may I just say WOW! You two certainly are a couple of tough cookies to come thru all of that!
Katie, I would definitely look into the schluter stuff (not sure I spelled that correctly), new stuff is coming out all the time, and the old school stuff isn't always the best stuff. Might be worth the extra expense.
Allie, good for you for going to the Al-anon meeting and for persevering thru. Sure hope you can find a will, I suspect that would make things a lot easier for you. Too bad your brother is being a pill. Glad you have Alfie to cuddle up with!
