How do I talk my Mom off the "Sugar is Toxic" ledge?

Awws, thanks! Yeah, she's pretty awesome. My brother calls her The White Haired General when she's ordering us around in what I call Back Yard Bootcamp (she has several acres and extensive gardens. Lots of trees, too, which means lots of work after 4 winter storms.)5 -
My great Aunt was very similar. She stayed in her home well in to her eighties, volunteered costuming old dolls for the local museum, and mowed her own lawn. She had a little ramp to push the mower up on to her porch with little effort.
Regarding Alzheimer’s I found this Ted talk most instructive.

Okay, I think your thread would have gone better if you said, "80 YO mother still uses a chainsaw. How do I get her to stop?"14

I'm sure that's less controversial than sugar!
I'm not worried about the chainsaw, though, just ladders and food fads leading to undereating3 -

Refined sugar is nothing but *kitten* in your body. Watch a few Netflix videos about sugar. Try using stevia and products with stevia instead.25

I liked Armageddon.
Not really, it was two thumbs down. But fiction it was.2 -
Well thank you everyone for correcting me on my first post ever in community. I can see this is going to be fun!11

Stevia is nasty. Stuff always tastes bitter to me and ruins pretty much anything it's put into.
So why should I replace refined sugar (the little bit I use) for something I loath?7 -
Unless it's causing her (or you) significant stress, I'd just let it go. You gotta pick your battles.7

A little bit of sugar isn't going to hurt you. Everything in moderation.0 -

FYI. I, too, have RA and my doctor never told me this. Lots of misinformation out there. He also told me to stay far away from chiropractors, they have no business getting near my joints. Whatever.8 -

In a word, yes.8 -

That's not what your statement sounded like.
Sugar is nothing bad. Not matter the source. Your brain and red blood cells need sugar (in it's most basic form of glucose) to function.
Yes excess can be bad since it usually leads to weight gain. But in and off itself sugar is nothing to be afraid off. Documentaries like the ones you are recommending on Netflix and articles like the ones the OP's mother is reading are are actually causing problems for people who then go out of their way to avoid ALL sugar, even the sugar naturally occuring in things like fruit.
Or is fruit bad for you too?4 -

Chiropractor has helped me a lot. I have Lupus and have a lot of nerve pain, so adjustments help. He is also very educated in nutrition and holistic healing.13 -

I'm not sure why you found this particular post funny? The OP's mother is worried about sugar to the point of cutting out fruit. You've read the thread, surely, and have seen all of the OP's follow-up posts. You're statement that "A little bit of sugar isn't going to hurt you" is exactly what the OP is trying to convince her mother of. I'm not sure why you're in opposition to that?5 -
Oh MFP....
OP: My mom eats very little added sugar, but I am concerned she's getting stressed and losing weight due to reading all sorts of alarmist stuff about sugar. She's starting to worry about fruit.
Poster: Sugar is bad stuff; avoid it and watch the alarmist Netflix docs about sugar.
My note: Netflix docs actually make all sorts of conflicting diet claims that could make anyone neurotic -- various Netflix docs go after sugar, fat, meat and other animal products, "processed foods," GMOs, so on. One of the more recent ones (obnoxious for other reasons) is anti animal products/fat and says sugar isn't so bad.13 -

To be fair, based on my Netflix viewing I now call the sheriff every time my lights blink because I assume something from The Upside Down is trying to get me.11 -
There's a terminology issue here. Substances like water and oxygen are toxic at certain concentrations/doses. Sugar sure can be toxic - pretty sure you'll die if you consume a few thousand grams in an hour.3

There's no need to do any checking, it shows up on desktop on the website directly under your username. Additionally, I remember your username from years ago, so definitely not your first post. Again, misinformation gets called out.
@kshama2001 I'm sorry your mom is so stressed about this (and sorry for what this thread is turning into). Based on what you're describing on her activity levels and general health, what she's been doing up to now has been working pretty good. In addition to some of the suggestions above (going to watch that TED talk later), perhaps remind her that she's been doing great without all this worry and stress. I agree with @Tiny_Dancer_in_Pink that she is certainly inspiring.5
