I'm used to being firmly in the middle of the pack, so it was really weird to find myself in the leading group. The race winner is a 12 year old boy and there was no way on earth I was going to catch up with him. He had youth and enthusiasm on his side. As we approached the finish line, I was still in 4th over all, but I could hear someone catching me up. "Not today, sunshine", I thought as I put my foot down for that final push. I beat him by one second.
Great job! Thats just awesome.0 -
4/1: 2.5 miles
4/2: 3.1 miles
4/3: ST, walk 1 mile
4/6: ST, 3 miles
4/7: 3.5 miles
4/8: 6 miles
Total Running for April: 18.1/60
6 miles at one of my favorite parks today. I usually only run on the paved paths, but today I ventured onto some of the dirt trails that go through the woods and overlook the river.
Upcoming Races:
Phoenix Rising 5k 4/21
Wineglass Marathon 9/306 -
Rest day today.
My brother-in-law ran the Ragnar 200 with a group of 12. I guess he's not up for doing the run in a team of 6.2 -
Took me a while to find the thread!!!
I went AWOL at the end of march but let's try this again! My target for April is 50km. Aiming to run 3-4 km 4-5 times a week. I am very stretched for time so can't do longer runs at the moment but a short run is better than none right?!
4/1 - 4km - 4/50
4/2 - rest day - 4/50
4/3 - 5.4km - 9.4/50 - awful run... legs are still feeling the effects of spinning and running on the weekend....
4/4 - rest
4/5 - rest
4/6 - rest not intended rests, just flat out with house stuff...
4/7 - 4km (dreadmill!) - 13.4/50
4/8 - 6km back out in the open air! - 19.4/50

@PastorVincent - LOL at speeding up for the "last 200m" early. FWIW, 200m is about 0.125 miles. It's halfway around a standard outdoor track, a full circuit of a standard indoor track. The idea is that this is about as far as you can run anaerobically at the end of a race without running out of gas.
Still, it's not a bad strategy to speed up just a little where you did, with 1K or so left, assuming you feel that you have the energy to finish the race faster than you have been running. Just don't go for your mile race pace till the last furlong.
Yeah, see... I am pretty good at mental math and know that 1600m is about a mile so 200/1600 = 1/8th a mile... but for some reason, while I am running my math skills are not up to 5th-grade level.I have no idea what I did to come up with 2.57 miles means 200 meters left, but it sure made sense at the time

April running update
Week 1: 35.4
Took a few days off from April 1-4 to let left foot with PF rest a bit and also use as a midweek taper for HM this sat.
Re the race. Was the Chitown HM running the lakeshore of Lake Michigan. Sunny day, however was a cold 22 with up to 10mph winds making it feel like 14 or so. Arrived early to get close parking, bib, gear check and a little warmup run around the park to get in coral 5-10 min prior to start. Saw someone I follow on Strava and chatted and then they announced race was going to be delayed 10 min as the bag check line was lengthy since it was both poorly staffed and people arrived late. I was only slightly annoyed but I didn’t feel cold so I patiently waited. Race plan was to stay within sight of pace group running 1:45 goal race which would be a 1 min PR. Garmin And/or mileage markers seemed to both be off and first 5 miles seemed to be clipping along at -7:50 each or 10 seconds fast but I was feeling good so as we made a loop I decided to move forward picking up the pace slightly to gain time. At mile 9 I hit the lap button on my garmin which added 1 min to the 9 miles earlier. From there Miles/garmin was close enough and I was maintaining around 7:45 avg for the last 4 Miles with mile 13 becoming a challenge. Aid stations had frozen water/icy gatorades but I was neither too cold or hot and I took a couple gu’s at mile 4 and 8. Felt elated as I saw the finish chute and 1:42:xx was on the clock. My official time was 1:42:29 which was a new PR by over 3:30. Had some water and a free beer and a fewChicago Portillo’s hot dogs to celebrate!17 -
Was supposed to be 9 miles today.
Also, I was going to do my first experiment with UCAN to see if it would prevent low BG. I started with an elevated BG (about 180 mg/dl) as well, and did not do a temp. basal (i.e. lower background insulin) as I normally would. Unfortunately, I was not feeling very energetic, it was windy, and a bit cold. Plus, my earbuds were running out of battery already after 30 min. despite a full charge (they are several years old).
Anyway, I cut it short and ended up with 6.1 miles and not even close to the pace I wanted. Tested BG upon return and it was mid-300's!! I tried to correct and had an infusion set issue, so I don't know now how much of that can be blamed on UCAN vs. the infusion site. Even worse, my CGM was way off and I can't reliably say when and how much my BG rose during that time. But this high BG explains why I felt sluggish.
Anyway, 6.1 miles and I'm going to just re-do this week on my training plan. And the UCAN experiment failed, so will have to do that again.6 -
4miles today at run 4min walk 2min intervals. - this may have overdone it by a bit, but I was packing for a trip, and lamenting over not fitting into my warm weather clothes before I went for the run.... so, may have contributed to my over zealous goal. But, it makes me very happy that I could still run this distance, and since I’m back to being terribly slow, 4 miles was a very significant amount of time as well...which makes me happy from a cardiovascular endourance stand point. Time will tell how much I regret this later.6

Congrats to all of you who raced this weekend! I enjoyed reading all your posts. Great work on surviving both cold and warm weather (can't imagine right now), getting PRs and having fun. The hot dogs sound good too.

I am so sick of being cold, I couldn't face an outdoor run today after a fairly long walk with the dog this morning. I hit the treadmill at the gym this afternoon. Although it dragged a bit, I'm not sorry. If it doesn't shape up out there I'm never going out again. Except for right now to take the dog out again

Yeah, that's why we make race plans and practice parts of those plans. None of us thinks as well in the middle of a race as we do when planning beforehand or analyzing afterwards.3 -
wholey macaroni! You guys are serious!!!! (Total Newbie here).
I'm just trying to get my 3 mi, 3x a week in (I swim 2 days a week). For now, that's all I have time for. Gone are the days I could run for hours in the orange groves.
Hi Everyone!!!10 -
April Running Totals (miles)
4/1 – 6.21 easy
4/2 – rest day
4/3 – 6.35 easy to MP
4/4 – unscheduled rest day – wind storm
4/5 – 8.39 easy with snow showers
4/6 – 4.01 easy
4/7 – 12.01 paced run
4/8 – 7.84 easy 60 minutes
April running total to date – 44.81
Nominal April mileage goal: 130 miles
Real goals: Arrive at Hopkinton healthy. Get to Boyleston Street under my own power. Recover well.
Today's notes – The marathon training plan I'm not following called for 60 minutes easy today. This followed yesterday's assignment of downhill 4 miles at MP-10 sec, rolling 6 miles at MP, uphill 3 miles at MP+15 sec. Yesterday I actually ran 12 miles close to MP, so the level of effort was around what the plan assigned.
So . . . I calculated about 7 miles today to hit my final taper weekly mileage target. 7 miles at 8 minutes per mile would be 56 minutes, and my runners' pride said, "Just run for an hour." So I did. Of course, I couldn't hold an 8 minute pace so I had to add distance make an hour; but it was still less than 8 miles, and I can work with that.
Tomorrow the plan says 30 minutes easy + 4 strides. I will take a rest day. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday I'll jiggle distances to come out to about the right mileage for the week, the take a rest day Friday and fly out on Saturday. Just have to convince myself to really limit those miles this week. First goal is to arrive at Hopkinton healthy.

Hi Everyone!!!
Well . . . 3 miles, 3 times a week is about 9 miles more per week than most Americans run. I'd say you belong here.13
