@shanaber your daughter is killin' it, that's fantastic!
@lporter229 that sounds like a great time! Valerie June is an amazing talent. I pulled up the website to check the lineup. I think the highlight for me would be Shovels & Rope. I love those two.
I was tempted by a 6 mile trail run last night while my son had soccer practice, but I was smart and stuck with the planned rest day, after my 20 mile on Sunday.
Going for 10 tonight, probably on pavement as I want to work on pace and do some strides and fartleks.4 -

Just updating my miles since last Thursday. Technically, I am now in taper for the Flying Pig, so it will be a push to make it to goal this month, but primary focus is to stay healthy and rested, so it will be what it is. I have to say (knock on wood), I do not remember feeling this rested going into taper before. Not sure if that is a good sign or a sign that I haven't trained hard enough. I guess we will see on May 6th. I have not really set a goal for this race other than to enjoy running the Flying Pig on my own terms for the first time. Hopefully that will be accomplished regardless of the time outcome.8 -

I put in an easy three during soccer practice last night. I knew a storm was coming, so it had to be short so I could beat the lightning before they cancelled practice. I made it just in time. I'll probably do a few road miles this afternoon.
I still don't know what summer race I'll do. I have a September and a November (22k and 30k) all but dialed in. I was going to do the "Slacker Half" in June, which I still might do, but was hoping for something on trail. Nothing matches up with my schedule very well because of other commitments. It will come...

@noblsheep Not sure what my stairs plan of attack is. I'm going to see if there's any stairs workouts out there, or if I'll just DIY my way up and down.0

86.6/110 miles completed
I had a great 6.1 mile run this morning. I had 5 on the schedule, but I felt so good and I had time so I added an extra mile. I'm not sure if I'll run tomorrow because there is an 80% chance of rain plus a cold front so I very likely will not get up early and run before work. If it is good at lunch or after work, I might try to run then. But I may just move that run to Friday.
I have a question for y'all. I need new shoes and the nearest running store is an hour away. I was thinking about ordering some online. Are there any good sites to order shoes at a good price? I mostly order stuff on Amazon and the price there for the Saucony Ride 10 seems to be the same as the running store price.
Great races this weekend @kevaasen ,@sarahthes, @huntleigh3229 and @katharmonic !
The new job sounds pretty good @PastorVincent. A pretty park with historic trails sounds like just the type of running I would love.

@kgirlhart
There's no single place for great deals, you just have to hunt. I've found good deals on the previous years models online at Nordstrom Rack (seriously!) but you have to really dig through the selection to find real running shoes. I've also had good luck with Sierra Trading Post, REI (they often have clearance prices in the REI garage), Running Warehouse, Running Room, as well as the shoe manufacturers websites.
The shoe manufacturer's will often have a guarantee where you can try the shoes out for a month or more and return them, for free, if you don't like them. Brooks has a 90 day trial period!!
Otherwise you can try this site for finding the lowest price
https://shoekicker.com/
or this
https://runrepeat.com/
There are definitely deals to be had out there if you hunt them down. In my spreadsheet of shoe miles I also track what I paid. For 23 pair of running shoes, my average price is $65/pair3 -
Oh wow, this thread is huge! I started running last August, mostly just around my block (and half of that time with my poorly trained dogs) although I got up to running about a mile to a mile and a half without stopping. I decided to hang up my shoes when it got icy and focused on calisthenics and strength training over the winter. But all of the sudden it's finally spring in Minnesota and my running bug is definitely back.
Yesterday was what I hope will be my first regular run of the year - I went out twice in February on thaw days, and once or twice a week in March until a string of early spring blizzards hit. >.< I also quit smoking in mid-March which frustratingly f-ed up my lung capacity and energy for a little while.
I was starting to worry I'd get fewer miles in April than February but this week is looking great and I'm on pace to hit my first mini-achievement of the running year: 10 miles in one week! Yup, I'm starting slow, but looking to build. My major achievement of the year is set for October - my first 5k during the Twin Cities Marathon Weekend. I'm all registered and everything, so now I just have to actually run 5k consecutively a few times in between now and then. No biggie!
Actually, I feel pretty good about that, even if my legs are still a little grouchy at me after yesterday. I went 2.2 miles at 11'30", which was a good pace for me, faster than where I was last year and in March. I'm focused on building distance more than speed, but knowing that I can manage a bit faster a bit longer without stopping is encouraging.
So here's to the last week of April, and a great season to come!
4/23 Mo - 0:25:22 - 2.19 miles
4/24 Tu - rest
4/25 We - 2.2 miles
4/26 Th - rest
4/27 Fr - 2.2 miles
4/28 Sa - 3 miles
4/29 Su - rest
4/30 Mo - 2.2 miles7 -

I hope so! I will find out after I get through all this "onboarding" stuff. Might be a week or 2.

I mostly order stuff on Amazon and the price there for the Saucony Ride 10 seems to be the same as the running store price.
Know your own feet. If you wear a size in the fat part of the bell curve, you can hunt for deals online. I wear a size 14, and can confidently predict that none of the really great online prices will be available in my size.
So I shop at Amazon and Zappos, because those sites can consistently sell me something that fits. If I want the current model shoe, the price is pretty much going to be the same as in the running store (where I'd have to order it anyway most of the time), but if I'm wiling to go to an older model I can get a better price. So I order the last model or the current model when the next model is about to roll out. I mostly wear Saucony Kinvaras, but I'd expect to see the same kind of price action on the Saucony Ride.
I also keep shoes in rotation, and shoes in boxes waiting to go into rotation. This gives me the luxury of buying when the price is good, instead of having to pay up when I need a new pair of shoes *right now.*
EDIT TO ADD: Online prices for the same size of the same model of shoe vary by shoe color. I have learned to be fashion blind with respect to running shoes. Give me the three cheapest colors, so I can tell them apart. It's not worth an extra $5 for a pretty color of shoe that will just get dirty anyway.2 -

Wasn't going to run today, but my new shoes beckoned. They were a little tingly in the baby toes around mile one, but settled in nicely. Less cushion than I'm used to, but still a "level 4." Was interesting to finally get the gait analysis done. I've been used to having to choose a wide shoe, but I measured within the normal range. I guess my feet aren't fat any more! I think I'll always want/need a wider toe box, but being able to by regular width shoes is a real-life game changer for me y'all.4 -
Thanks @7lenny7 and @MobyCarp . I live out in the sticks and so unless I want to drive an hour or an hour and a half I don't have many choices, especially for shoes. I order a lot of stuff on Amazon so I will probably just look there if I can find my size. If I looked for Ride 9 or Ride 8 would they be about the same as the Ride 10? I may just go with the 10 since I know it works for me and I can't afford to get 2 new pairs of shoes before the HM next month.0

That all depends. Sometimes the changes from version to version are minimal, sometimes they're drastic enough that what once worked for you no longer does. Quite often if you read reviews for a certain model, they'll describe the changes from the previous model.

When the 11s come out, you should be able to find the 10s at a cheaper price. That is when I stock up.1 -

Today's schedule run on the plan was for a tempo build run. it was good, well, other than that Hobbes the Vizsla had to go potty twice in the middle of the tempo portion of the run as well as once in the warmup. Next time I may just have leave him home for these runs He also wanted to stop and look at all the Canadian geese who are nesting along the river so he got dragged along for part of it too. Goofy dog! This was the first time I have tried this type of run and it was kind of fun to work up to a fast pace and hold it there just for a few minutes and then slowly drop it back down. The hardest part for me was bringing the pace down until the 0.5 mile cool down - by the cool down though all I wanted to do was walk - my legs were toasted. I am sure it didn't help that I also ran a lot of intervals fast with Hobbes the Vizsla last night at our agility class. We had a fun technical course and he was flying along with me trying to keep up with him!
Thanks @elise4270, @Orphia and @7lenny7 - I am just so excited my daughter is running and enjoying it. It has helped that the Seattle weather has been accommodating. She told herself if it was raining on run day she didn't have to run. So far it has not rained once on her running days as she said 'who knew that was all it took for her to control the weather! If she'd known she would have done it a long time ago'!
@kgirlhart - I get my shoes mostly onsite from the brand sites online when they have sales. Most have fairly decent return policies if the shoes don't work out. REI has a great return policy as well. I have also bought them from the Active Gearup/Leftlane Sports site. They often have pretty significant markdowns - for example men's Newtons for $49 and womens's Kinvara 8's for around $60...
@polskagirl01 - Isn't it amazing the different muscles that are used between running and biking? You would think they would be complimentary! On your HR. My HR is very low (RH 36 and normal during the day 45-50) and none of the standard thresholds work for me. Like you everything would show in the easy zone. I ran some of my own measurements (based on Matt Fitzgerald's recommendations as well as talking to my cardiologist. Based on those I know my LT is around 136-140 and my max HR is around 150. I adjusted my zones based on those numbers.
@karllundy - Congratulations on your sub 2hour HM PR!! Whoot!! Whoot!! We're all waiting on that race report!

Hot today, or at least hotter than it has been in a good long while at 21C when I ran home from work. I didn't run with water at all last year as I was still running short distances and generally early or late, but I tried out my water belt thingy today (hubby bought it for me for Christmas). It was comfy, but I don't think it holds enough water for a summer long run.
I was still super hot when I ran past the Mac's so I bought a slushy on my way past. Probably looked pretty funny running the last 300m or so carrying it...

Today's notes – Gorgeous running weather today. Wore shorts and a tee to club practice, got my 2 mile warm up done early, waited around for the meeting. The two of us who ran Boston didn't do the speed work pointing at Dedham or Lilac 10K; Coach had us run some easy miles then finish with 6x50m strides just to get the legs used to turning over again. The easy miles plus strides came out to 4 miles for me, the first 3 or a bit slower because I backed off to Phil's pace; he ran a good Boston, but was feeling more banged up than I am today.
Phil tells me it was awful waiting in line for the drop bags in the wind and rain. I bypassed that scene by just going back to my hotel. I'm thinking it's worth the money for a hotel close to the finish line. Maybe next year we get good weather and it doesn't matter; but if we get nasty weather for standing around, that close hotel sure is nice.
50m strides were just the thing to get back into speed work. They aren't long enough to be intimidating, or to bang myself up too bad. Probably Thursday's speed work will be something like 4x800 at T or 15 second cutbacks; by Thursday, I should be up to something easy like that before Sunday's race.
In other news, I felt so good that I registered for the next two races on my wish list. That's likely all the races I'll run in May; there are a lot of races in June, and I need to think about which ones are most important.

Hey, does that mean I can count my flight to San Antonio Monday? Lol! Am I reading that right? Is there a decimal error? 65 mph?
ETA I've been in stats class all day. Then was allowed to go socialize with a group. Nervous introvert trying to not look like the idiot from Oklahoma in front of corporate "seagulls". (I'm kinda keyed up)
Seagulls... Fly all over and poop on everything. Learnt that today. And SPOC .... Mmmm now I can't remember that one. I know it's not Sex Professional of Canada... maybe Subject? Person of Contact. Eh, kinda sounds similar?2 -
Tired after work and didn’t really feel it, but yesterday was a rest day. I figured I would get in at least three and see how things went from there. Made it 3.5 miles which I was happy with. The legs felt heavy so will see how things feel tomorrow.

Thanks for the well wishes all for Boston. As @MobyCarp mentioned, I hit the half right under my BQ pace (1:38) then slowed for the second half. In short, I didn't get in enough hills during my training cycle down in Florida, my quads fell apart by that point of the race, so to avoid risking needing to walk/freeze, I explicitly cut back to a 9:40 pace as it let me shorten my stride and not punish my quads as badly, while letting me take in the atmosphere.
Enjoyed every minute of Boston otherwise and looking to get back for 2020. Weight crept up a bit (as I was 15lb above my qualifying race), but focus for the year has been on my full Ironman in Wisconsin in September, along with a multi-stage bike race (Haute Route) over in Europe this summer. Been working with a coach this past 6 months so using that to keep me (mostly) accountable for training.13 -
25 km run today, 25th of April.
177 metres of elevation;
Pitstops and short walk while I ate & drank something at 8 and 16km;
Needed to get stones out of shoes at 23 km;
Didn't pause my Garmin.
I enjoyed that run!
