4km today 7km for the month. Really nice weather for a run, a little windy though.4

@7lenny7 - that is awesome about your wife! I hope she enjoys it (eventually) and I think having the support of a community of other women will make it more fun! Also I am glad that Kody is ok! I noticed Hobbes the Vizsla getting pretty overheated the last few runs and especially yesterday's even though it was pretty short. It was in the 70's when we were out but he was wiped out when we got home.
@__TMac__ - I had to laugh when I read your post about your runs shoehorned between conference calls! That was my life just a few short weeks ago! Loving that I no longer have to worry about work getting in the way!
@BruinsGal_91 - where are you that you have coyotes coming that close? Yikes!
@zerlinna87 - Congratulations on your 5k! Hope your leg/tendonitis is feeling better!
@Teresa502 and @PastorVincent - Good Luck on the marathon!! I can't wait to read your race reports!
@huntleigh3229 - Congrats on your park run PB! Those are awesome improvements!
@RunsOnEspresso - REI usually has a bike repair/maintenance shop. I have taken ours to the REI near us and they have done a good job getting it back working and in good order (also hanging in the garage for long periods) and hasn't been too expensive. As a matter of fact I should take mine in again and start riding it again...Group question.
What's your cross training regimen? Goals? Actions??
Like @MobyCarp I also have a routine on non-gym days that I do at home. They include a bit of everything but started out as some of the PT exercises for my glutes but now I do those as well as different types of planks, pushups, etc.. I would love to buy a kettlebell but I can't decide what weight to get.
I run 5 days/week and the 2 rest days (Wed/Sun) are usually non-gym days either. They may include a walk with the pup or an easy run/walk on the dog beach but I try to keep it really easy as well as still getting 10,000 steps on those days too. (taking a page from @ddmom0811's favorite book - Younger Next Year!
Oh and I also do an agility class with Hobbes the Vizsla once a week - it is kind of like running sprints in the evening after the easy run I do in the morning.
My goals are to be as strong as I possibly can (Ernestine Shepherd comes to mind!) without actually living in the gym, continuing running as long as possible and be able to sort of keep up with Hobbes in agility trials.5 -

Oh man, I've got to go back and read those posts on crosstraining. I don't think I do anything that would be considered crosstraining right now, especially as running isn't my primary focus, but I'm fascinated by what other people are doing. Today was an interesting run. Pretty bad as these things go, but very instructive. It's been a rough week what with some ugly DOMs after Tuesday AM lifting followed by donating blood and a day or two of feeling pretty crummy all around. I skipped my run Thursday but decided I was feeling okay to get back out there today in spite of a late night with friends and less sleep than usual.
As it happens, I should have been more concerned with the weather and my pace - about halfway I had a drop to a walk, which hasn't happened since I started running again a couple of weeks ago or during any of my scattered March runs if I recall correctly. I finished the run but felt like garbage when I got home - totally overheated and a little nauseous. I realized two things had happened:
(1) It was in the low 70s today and moderately humid when almost all of my runs have been in 30-50 degree weather, and I was overdressed in capri leggings and an oversized t-shirt. Proper running shorts and tanks have been ordered and I'm going to be more careful about looking at the weather before I head out even for a short run.
(2) After getting home and looking at my watch I realized that my first mile was a full minute faster pace than I've been running. No wonder I had to walk parts of the second half! I was using my normal playlist but was apparently using a longer stride or something. Looking at my numbers for my last few runs, I think that my challenge right now is going to be balancing the fact that my legs are a lot stronger now than they were last year (I started strength training in March), but my endurance hasn't caught up yet. Each of my last few runs were slightly faster than the one before, but I think I got overeager today after not running as planned mid-week. The next time I go out (which might be tomorrow depending on how I feel) I'll definitely make sure to watch my pace!

Played the tourist today in Pittsburgh. Went on a 3 hour bike tour of the city and then had a late lunch and did some shopping in the strip area. Looks like we may get some rain during tomorrows events.
Before heading out this morning I registered for another HM. The Rock n Roll in Vegas.7 -
Ran a fun 5k today along the beach (part of my HM training plan). It was a 'Cinco de My Oh My Miles' 5k with a Mariachis band, dancers and a dancing horse. I did not have any but the post race food looked and smelled awesome - street tacos, chips and salsa, etc... I just couldn't eat it that early in the morning and right after a run. The weather was pretty nice, in the 70's already but with a bit of a breeze. I went out faster than I should have at a pace I could not maintain over the entire distance but kept it pretty level at that pace for the 1st 2 miles. I haven't run a 5k race in over 3 years and in my mind I kept thinking - its only 3 miles keep it up - go, go, go... On the last mile I started to get dizzy and had to walk a little but still ended up with a decent finish (34.29) and pace (11:05) I was 6th in my AG out of 20 but no where near my sub 30 PR. I felt great afterwards and not really even tired. When I looked back at my HR though I can see that I drove it to the top end of zone 4 and that was about the time I needed to walk and my average HR for the race was considerably higher than I would normally see.
My DH picked me up after the race with the pup so we headed up the road to the dog beach. It was low tide and we had a blast running up and down the beach in the water... It looks empty in the pictures but there were so many people out cooling off with their dogs!

@Elise4270
Group question.
What's your cross training regimen? Goals? Actions??
Currently I run based on weather - polluted=no run, but I shoot for 3 runs a week. Then I bike to work maybe 3-4 days a week, also weather based, and lift every other day.
Bike rides are about 35 minutes one way so they stack up pretty quickly. Goal is mostly to get in some cardio when I don't have time for a run.
Lifting goals are simply to get some upper body and core strength, or maybe to pull myself out of a pit like @PastorVincent . Currently doing a variation of strongweights 5x5.
Thinking about taking up swimming, mostly because SO likes it but hates being in the pool alone. Got ear infections when I was a kid and haven't seen the inside of a pool since. We'll see.
Your goal of sneaking up on a triathlon sounds awesome!3 -
Terrible run today.
Here's the story: Tomorrow is supposed to be long run day (10 miles) at 9:45 pace according to my training schedule. I plan to hike tomorrow, so decided to try to get a long run today. I had a meeting out of town in the afternoon and needed to get some shopping done first. By the time I had purchased what I needed, I barely had enough time to run before my meeting (at 1:30pm) and only if I could keep pace as scheduled. But, when I started, my BG was almost low. I took glucose tablets before starting and had suspended my insulin pump about 20 min. before starting, but still went low. Had more glucose tablets, but still struggled to keep BG up. In the end, the run was much slower than goal pace and included a lot of walking. In the end, I only had 6.18 miles before I left and grabbed drive-thru on my way to the meeting. Today's plan said rest or 6 mile easy run... so I guess I followed today's plan. I'm still hiking tomorrow, so not sure if I will have time or energy for a 10 mile run afterwards.
Also, the place I ran today went past a bald eagle nest and it was very cool to see the eagle sticking its head out of the nest (looking for food, I assume, or protecting the fort).

@Teresa502 I signed up for the marathon! If it looks like i can't do it in less than 5 hours I'll be switching to the half.3

@Orphia I ordered DH and I a shirt. @garygse I liked your design so much i added it to a shirt. Since I didn't make your design, i didn't opt to share it with the group. If you decide to make one, let us know.
thanks!
ETA If you missed the "Embrace the Suck" shirt its HERE
ETA (again) @Orphia DH liked your shirt design, it reminded him of some Robert Frost poem he had to recite to me twice before i dismissed that he was over educated- "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood". He didn't think "Sisu" fit with running, but i told him it was "finish" so he had to have the shirt.

I had ear infections often as a kid too. I even had speech therapy for 3+ years. I use ear plugs now. Before i was diligent about putting isopropyl alcohol in my ears after every swim (esp when i took the kids to the lake all the time). You can also add a few drops of white vinegar with the alcohol to ward off fungus and infections. Or buy the premade Swim Ear stuff.0 -

Awesome! I love that Robert Frost.

Good thing you got the rain gear. And it won't be hot after all.0 -
@Elise4270 — My training schedule has 4 runs, 2 strength days, and 1 active rest or light cross-training day. The Strength day has a combo of bodyweight, machines, and free weights, as well as 20 minutes on the rowing machine or bike. The rest/cross-training day includes leisurely biking, swimming, or hiking.
After my next 5K I may drop a running day and add another bike or swim to prep for an event I have planned for July 4th with my dad (74 y.o) and my oldest child (21 y.o.) - 500m swim, 10m bike, 3m run, and canoeing back to the start. I may be the only one who does all three, but we’ll all get the burgers and beer at the end.2 -
@PastorVincent crossed 4.4 mile 37:42, 8:34 per mile. I'd feel better about him breaking 4 hours if it were more like 8:45 per mile; OTOH, looks like great running weather, and he knows the course pretty well.
ETA: I'll miss the critical text alerts when my phone is on Do Not Disturb for church; but I'll see them afterwards.4 -
@shanaber - I'm English so until I moved to the States, the only coyote I'd ever seen was the cartoon one with a penchant for Acme dynamite. It was a bit of a shock to see a real live one in the Boston suburbs. Still haven't seen a road-runner though.
Good luck to everyone racing today. I'm planning on my first run for May. I haven't run for seven days, but I've been walking plenty, so hopefully it won't be too much of a shock to the system.5 -
@Elise4270 I don't have a specific cross training plan, but I do yoga, strength training at least once a week, and I've taken up swimming on Saturdays. I love swimming. I used to be on the swim team in high school. It's a great work out that's easy on the joints and helps build up your breathing stamina, if that makes sense.
@PastorVincent good luck today!
Guys, today is a good day so far! My leg is the best it's been since last Sunday when it started bothering me. It's good enough that I'm considering running tomorrow. Also, I decided to get the Garmin vivoactice 3, and it's coming in the mail today. It's like Christmas! I've never had a fitness watch before. Eek!
The only bad thing is that our AC in our house has completely failed. It's going to AC heaven. And we live in the southeast, so it's HOT. Upper 80s today. Gotta get that fixed ASAP.7 -

That's 8:30 per mile averaged over 10 miles, faster for the second 5 miles. I hope he has it today, but I'm concerned this is too fast for that early when the goal is a 4 hour marathon.0 -
