Pittsburgh Marathon Weekend After-Race Report
I originally left this part out of the report – mainly because the race report was already so long – but I was thinking about it this morning and feel like that is a disservice to the new runners that might be reading these posts. So here we go:
As I crossed the finish line of the race I was a mixed bag of emotions. Pain, relief, excitement, and worry. A lot of pain really, but it was the dull soreness of pushing hard in a workout, not anything that I was worried about meaning an injury. That did not make it hurt any less but meant it was not a concern. The worry had to do with my wife.
After every race, it is my tradition to walk the course backward, find my wife and finish a second time with her. It really means a lot to me to do this. She is my hero, and I wanted to be there for her. So needless to say, getting to her was the primary thought on my mind as I claimed my medal and hit the Gatorade, hard.
As I worked through the exit chute, slowly and painfully step by step I was struggling to come up with how I was going to get to her and run again. Sure she is a slower runner than I, but at the moment a three-legged turtle could have outpaced me. Each step was hard, and she was two hours behind me at last report. Two hours is a nice long run on a nice training day, but this was that kind of day.
I must have looked the part as twice I was stopped by volunteers that wanted me in the medical tent. The second time three of them surrounded me so I could not even wander off like I did the first time. I just ate another banana and escaped somehow. I can be stubborn when I need to. Or when I do not need to. Or well, any time, but especially when I have an important goal in mind.
The post-run chills hit slowly as I meandered my way out, so I decided the wise move would be to go to gear check and get the ¼ zip pullover I had checked. While in there I pulled out a bottle of ibuprofen. Please understand, these meds are not really a good idea, as they hinder recovery and healing, but I could barely walk, and I was determined to find my wife. Well, I took some and then convinced the gear check people to let me recheck my bag.
The last text alert I had was that my wife had crossed the 20-mile line, so that meant she was at least 7 miles from where I was. Nothing to do other than start walking. Ibuprofen takes a while to kick in, but I was not going to wait on that.
As I walked the course backward the chills really hit hard. I had the heat shield and my quarter zip, and I was still shivering so bad I could not work my phone. I ducked into a Burger King and stood in the corner shaking. I got some odd looks, but I ignored them. I am not exactly a stranger to being looked at like I am some kind of alien. For a while, I fought with the phone trying to bring up the app that would give me her precise position but even inside I was still shivering badly.
Eventually, I realized I needed to get warm before I tried anything, so I managed to pull up a map and locate a Starbucks. I waddled my way down to it and ordered a Venti Mocha, and then curled up I the corner nursing the drink until it was gone. Then ordered another. I was finally able to get warm enough to work the phone and find her. She was 2 miles away and still moving at a reasonable pace. I was so proud of her!
Steeling myself I slipped back outside. It was raining now, of course. I was barely warm enough and the rain was not helping. I figured once I found her I could start running and that would help with the heat problem, and at this point, the ibuprofen had damped enough of the pain so I could think and move again. Waiting would do no good, so I pushed out and headed towards her.
I did finally meet up with her about a mile from the finish and ran the last mile in with her. If you look at Strava you can see that last mile. For her, it was at her best marathon pace, but for me, thankfully, it was a slow recovery pace. I might not have pulled it off otherwise. Running again did raise my core temp and help pull back the pain long enough for me to help her through the finish and to the recovery tent.
Today, the day after, I am sore and will likely take a rest day, but I have pushed myself hard in training to be ready for this. I suspect by Wednesday I will be running again. That is a really bad plan for most people, so do not mimic me in this.
So anyways, that is the bad side of smashing your PR and crushing even your best training times. There is a cost to pay when you hammer through your limits. Be ready for it. Bring warm clothes. Always bring warm clothes!

May 2nd: 4k
May 5th: Hillside 2 Haiti 5k - 38:10 (7:38 pace)
May 6th: easy 5km
Total mileage so far: 14km
My seasoned runner friend ran alongside me on Saturday, which I appreciated tremendously, and we had just such a fun run. She obviously had to slow down a lot, but she said an easy 5 was in her training plan haha - what a friend! As far as the race itself, I was just hoping to finish as a newcomer to the sport. I really enjoyed meeting some of the local running community and think I might get involved with a running club soon.

Thanks @juliet3455 and @RunsOnEspresso. That is good advice. I am a little worried that I will start out too fast since I tend to run faster at the beginning of my runs and slow down as I get tired.
@scott6255 I recently started running in the mornings before work, and I kind of feel the same about being slower. I think a lot of it for me is just not being fully awake.0 -

16 slow, slogging trail miles yesterday morning.
The run sucked. It was supposed to be my last 20 mile run before my taper but for a variety of reasons...lack of sleep, an abundance of mint juleps, the resulting headache and dehydration, heat, sore calf, blah blah blah, I cut it back. Probably just as well. I'd normally have a 3 week taper for a 50K but since I haven't been able to get the miles in this spring that I'd hoped for I thought I'd just have a 2 week taper. We'll call this 2.5 weeks.
There was one positive in the day, and that I found a pair of shoes for my upcoming race. I had planned on my Cloudventures, but they're just not feeling right this year for some reason. 2nd choice was my Altra Lone Peaks 3.0, but they are not starting to split at the seam after just 150 miles. Not wanting to take a chance and risk a new shoe model, I bought a pair of Lone Peak 3.5's. Supposedly they have a beefed up upper so they don't blow out, but what I really love about them is that the toe box is slightly narrower so my foot doesn't slide all over the place. It seems this may have cured my problem of blisters/calluses on the tips of my a few of my toes too. So I have that going for me, which is nice.
Saturday was a boat prep day so no running at all, but I was on my feet all day.
It will be a tough week to get miles this week. I need to have our bathroom remodel functional by Wednesday (Just need to set the toilet and sink and plumb them up), then Thursday I drive to Milwaukee to pick up one son from college, then drive to Kansas to see my daughter graduation from KU. Somewhere in there I'm hoping for two runs around 6 to 8 miles each.
I'll have to go back later and catch up on posts.

Awesome race reports this weekend. Congratulations to all.
I'm bummed that I totally forgot about the Broad St. run in Philly yesterday. I definitely would have run that if I had it on my radar screen and the weather turned out to be perfect. It hurt a little seeing coverage from the finish line on the local news.
I just signed up for a HM in September and will only run a couple of shorter races this summer for that training. Since I have no specific training purpose for the short-term, all of my runs are purely for the pleasure of it and it's been an awesome stretch of weather the past few weeks. 14 more miles between Saturday and today.
5/1 - 5/6: 25 miles
5/7: 5 miles

Tough workout today, but I did it. It was a half mile warm up then 6x .75mile at 10K pace with .25mile recovery jog. Somehow I managed to PR the 10K distance during this run on my Garmin!
Going to do a nice easy 6 miles tomorrow.

@PastorVincent - I am in awe. I was sure after your crushing PR marathon, you would be physically unable to run with your wife to finish the race. That is a testament to grit, determination, and human willpower. I could not have done it.0

Hey everyone!
I've been gone a long, long time. I can't even remember the last time I checked in, actually. At least a year ago?
Anyway. I haven't been running. I've been busy, and sad, and happy, and busy, and working, and etc. etc. etc., but not taking care of me. I've had a lot of weight gain and now weigh what I did when I started running back in the winter of 2015. So, I have some work to do. I'm logging my meals. I'm signing up for grad school. And I'm going to start running again. I've asked for a membership to a gym for Mother's Day (although I'll run outside whenever the weather allows).
Starting out slowly so I don't screw this up: I plan to run 10 miles this month.11 -

@PastorVincent – wished I had thought to get your contact information so that I could have helped you after the marathon. After the half, we went back to the hotel, took showers, went to lunch and then watched some of the last runners come in. We had to stick around a while before we could get our car out of valet parking. Does your wife remember seeing the guy playing the bagpipes? We hung out with him for a while and cheered for the runners. It was raining and I was chilly dressed in dry clothes. I felt so bad for them still out there.

Holy cow 154 posts since I last looked here on Friday!
I tried to remember things I wanted to comment on but became overwhelmed pretty quickly.
1) Cross Training: I suck at it, I hate it, I promise myself I will do 3 exercises each evening with stretches.
2) Congrats on all the races this weekend!
3) I have also had issues with the old Altra's...haven't tried the new ones yet. I have been eyeballing Salomons.
4) Ugh Garmin, definitely a love/hate relationship. Great data...does not play with others (apps). I can never get it to sync with my apple watch or Loseit app.
5) Great race report! I hate being in a slower corral. In Hawaii they don't believe in them and is a free-for-all. You can be near the front and still be dodging strollers.
So for my weekend:
The 5K went really well and I came in at 28:30. I felt strong till about 2.5 miles and then it started requiring some mental motivation. The last .25 I relied on my pacer a lot to pull me a long for the final sprint. My lungs gave out before my legs. I finished 57th overall (male and female) out of about 80 runners...I think, it was a small race with no official results. Let me tell ya, if you ever need a confidence boost DO NOT run a 5K on a military base....I had a 9yr old in front the whole time...and she didn't even place in the top 3 for female youth LOL.
But I am happy to have a baseline to work off of and I have updated all my paces to reflect a 25 min 5K and I will work on that and try again when I finish this cycle (July). I don't know what I will do after that. The Tahoe marathon is in Oct so I would need to start adding some marathon mileage if I am going to do it. I was thinking about it this weekend and my heart is not totally set on doing it. I want a fast marathon for a confidence boost. If I don't do it, I will probably keep doing 5K work until I get sub 20 min....and then take those paces into the 10K and on up.
This morning was an easy 3 with my new 180Light belt. Pretty snazzy and I don't have to hold a flashlight and give myself motion sickness. Tomorrow I think we have fartleks starting at 4 min and working on down to 1 min sprints.
Now to lay off the cookies. Today I tried Tim Tam cookies from Aussie land...OMG, delish!8 -

There might have been more than one bagpipe player, but I definitely ran past at least one with her in the rain. So you probably saw us. You would know me as I was the guy wearing black Under Armor.1 -
Knee problem is getting in the way of running. Spending more time swimming and cycling. Hopefully, the knee will improve with time and rehab.3
