@7lenny7 Most of the time I don't even see the photographers until after they've already got me. But smiling throughout a race is supposed to help, and good posture should always be a goal, so it's still good advice!

Hey, just found your group, I think I might join. My goal is to be able to run for an hour without stopping at 4mph on the treadmill. Right now I can only go for 25 min sooo I have some work to do.

Welcome! Sounds like you are off to a good start!

This thread is like a pack of runners constantly in motion. Just jump on here and join the fun!

BTW, if you want good race photos, you can help by smiling, run with good posture (which you should be doing anyway) pushing your hat back further on your head so we can see your face, and position yourself so that you're not blocked by other runners.

Even when I try to do this I still look ridiculous - my face always looks like I'm pained or really uncomfortable or just overall unhappy with my situation. Not to mention super sweaty and crazy hair all over the place. Oh well, I'm not doing it to win any beauty contests

I always look like I'm dying in my race photos. Like @polskagirl01 I never see the camera person until it's too late. I'm usually just inside my owm head doing runners math of how much further I have to go. :D

@ctlaws44 this is what an unflattering race photo looks like. I'm never in control, my form is terrible, I'm funny looking, I have chicken legs, uni-granny-boobs and this particular photo I've fallen on my face and have a busted lip and nose which developed into a black eye for 2 weeks. of course, I'm vain enough that this is not the worst race photo that I came across trying to one up you. Your photo, you look strong and focused. I am incline to think you were showing off your great race photos..... I'm like an octopus trying to run. Which might be why I constantly trip over my own feet.

    I hate photos.

Compared to this time year, how have you improved your fitness?

This time last year, I had just run my PR 10K in April and another one 10 seconds slower in May. Ran the same two races this year, um, considerably slower. This time last year, I was about to go run a half marathon on the Saturday before Memorial Day, just because the plan called for 15 miles and a 2 mile warmup plus a HM fit it.

Now, I'm dealing with nagging aches on my right side that might be the tensor fascia lata, or might even be the IT band. I'm trying not to turn something minor into something major, so today is an unplanned rest day. I'm not running as well, and my kettlebell work is sporadic as opposed to being regular a year ago.

I may have peaked as a runner last year at age 61. Or I may just not be all the way back from injury yet. Time will tell.

@orphia - hope the stargazing was amazing! There are way too many lights in So. California for any decent stargazing. I do miss it from when I lived in Idaho as a kid and the stars were absolutely brilliant!
@ROBOTFOOD - Welcome back! Were was that race and incredible climb? Couldn't be Vegas I don't think ;)
@Teresa502 - Great picture and a great way to enjoy your vacation!!
@sarahthes - I am amazed that you have only been running a year! Fantastic progress!

Compared to this time year, how have you improved your fitness?
I am back to running more consistently and increasing my time and distance (than you retirement!) my nutrition is better and that is helping greatly with the running. I am also keeping to my HM plan and should hopefully be much better prepared for the SF race in July.

I am loving all the answers to @elise4270's question! So much awesome progress!

Can someone explain how you post pictures as a link rather than the big pictures? TIA

I have only had one or two race photos that I have wanted to keep/purchase and that is with nearly 25 HMs! They are all pretty terrible. I also think we are much too critical of ourselves and what we think looks bad really doesn't as evidenced by the posts from @ctlaws44, @Elise4270 and @7lenny

Big picture: I drag the picture from the Windows Explorer window to the edit post box:

    4kafrv1w268t.jpg

(Clicking the attach image icon and opening the file also works.)

Picture as a link: I click the attach files icon (not the attach image icon) above the edit post box and open the file from the dialog box:

3.5 miles on the treadmill this morning, including warm up and cool down, in about 52 minutes. I did some gentle intervals - 3/4 mile at an easy pace, 1/4 at a “quick” (for me) pace, then repeat. I felt like I could have done a little more; hopefully that bodes well for my “long” run on Saturday.

    May goal: 40.0 miles
    Today: 3.5 miles
    Total so far: 24.75 miles

Compared to this time last year, how have you improved your fitness?

May of last year I hadn’t quite hit my stride with weight-loss yet, but was just about to break through a three month plateau after losing 10 pounds during the first couple of months of the year. I was really taking things one at a time and at that point, weight-loss was the main goal rather than any other kind of fitness. I’m down another 40 pounds since then, so I think it was the right approach.

If anything I might have been focusing on upping my step count with my fitbit, trying to get my heart rate up enough that it would register 20-30 minutes of exercise a day. It’s possible I wasn’t even quite there yet - I didn’t hit an average 10k steps a day until September. It was really the end of July/beginning of August when I started focusing on fitness, but once I got into it, it was a pretty slippery slope from walking in the AM to running to fitness blender to lifting weights to the crazy combo I’ve got going now.

As for right now, I’ve been on a short break from weight lifting while I work on what I thought was going to be a medium-size gardening project and turned out to be a medium-sized landscaping project instead. I figure three days of turning over dirt is more than enough and took today as a rest day instead of lifting. I've got a bunch of transplants ready to go tonight or tomorrow night, then I can take a break from the heavy stuff until this heat wave breaks, which looks to be... June, at which point it'll be time to lay some bricks! /happysadcrazyface

I did get a short mile run in last night, but it was more about blowing off steam than anything else. Running: it’s not just good cardio, it’s good for your marriage (my husband was putting together a gazebo in the back yard and things got a little hairy, leading to me not being able to plant as planned). I should get four running days in this week, which I think will be a record but I’d have to check. Certainly it’s a step up for this year.

    May total: 28.57 miles

Plan for the next couple of days is to get up around dawn and run before the heat kicks in too badly - right now it's 89 and that's looking like the low for the next four days. Of course, we've got a 50% chance of thunderstorms tomorrow morning, and while running in the rain is fun, I'm thinking maybe not with the lightening.

@MobyCarp I hope you caught the pain early enough that it won't turn into a long rehab. TFL/ITB is a real pain to deal with. If I remember, you've dealt with TFL pain before?

I'm tempted to seek PT for some sweet ultrasound therapy in mine.

Thanks @mobycarp for the photo posting advice! I knew it had to be something simple.
@garygse - I don't think that picture is terrible. Like I said before, we are much too critical of ourselves and what we think looks bad really doesn't!
@MegaMooseEsq - Want to come work on my garden (we could also use a gazebo :)) it is nice and cool in So. California right now!

Head wasn’t quite into it as was a bit hot and muggy and my knee hurt. I made it to two miles and decided to walk it in. Normally, I can talk myself into going further but excited to run by the lake that tonight’s run/walk was good.

    5/23 - 5 miles
    5/24 - 2 miles/2 walk
    Total 40.5 miles run/70.5 goal

@7lenny7 Love the flyin' knuckles! I have a 5k coming up and plan to try that out

@garygse I noticed you went AWOL. But luckily I had Strava to stalk er uh, check to see if you'd been abducted by an early morning UFO, and to check the "what today is" thing you got going on. I did think of you yesterday. I was in your neck of the woods-ish. I hit the Run On! On Preston where I picked up some OC road shoes and wondered where you found your shoes. (I need a pair of trail/road shoes). So, in a not stalkerish way... Where ya do your shoppin'?

Thanks @shanaber for not saying I looked... Uh awful and old and oh soooo weird. Oh wait. Weirds my thing.

@garygse @rheddmobile @RunsOnEspresso Love the race photos! Gary's looks kind of presidential, doesn't it?

@shanaber You're right, but I definitely look like I just saw something hairy and scary in the bushes.

@Elise4270 Ha, I got my last pair from that very same Run On store! I also order directly from Nike because the price is the same everywhere, and they have a no-nonsense return policy. Previously I used to use Luke's Locker in Plano, but that location closed down last year.

The kid that helped me was the most knowledgeable shoe salesman I've ever encountered. I'll pop back next month for some trail shoes. Ta!
