Hi to this Group:
May I Join?
I am definitely over 50.
A retired, thank the Good Lord, 67 year old retired nurse, after 43 years on my worn out knees.
Terrible eating habits, like most nurses. Nothing surprises me. Seen everything, more than I have ever wanted to.
I have learned how to do and succeeded in many things in my life....except how to stay slim. I have fought weight problems since college....I thought I was heavy in high school (ha! ha!) but I was really just right. Society talked me into thinking I was fat and I started dieting....just started a disaster of yo yo--ing.
But that was many years ago....I would like to bring my weight down to 170....I would feel better, walk the stairs easier, and look better in my clothes. My general practitioner would be thrilled.
Married to a retired teacher who is fighting with diabetes (his retirement present!), no children, one Yorkie who thinks she rules the house (my 18 year old Golden Wheaten Terrier died 3 months ago and broke my heart in two). Our new Yorkie, Lexie, is adopted. Her 'Mom, Mary" died of colon cancer two days after Lexie came home. Mary and I worked together for many years and attended church together. Lexie got passed around several homes while Mary was ill for over a year....we really thought she would recover...so Lexie just "visited" friends. Then it became obvious Mary would not recover.
I volunteer with a non-profit organization called Project Cure--we take medical supply donations from hospitals, clinics, individuals of any types, clean them up, put them back together, and ship them to developing countries. We have distribution centers in Denver (HQ), Phoenix, Houston, Chicago, Nashville, and Philadelphia.
A 58 year old friend of ours just collapsed and was found to have a massive brain tumor (glioblastoma). Without treatment, he would only have a month to live. With chemo, if possible, he might have five years. Another wonderful, Godly man I know, just passed away last year with the same type of tumor. It's the same type Sen. McCain and Ted Kennedy had. Very aggressive and it never shows any sign until it's almost too late.
As a nurse, I have seen everything. Everything. It's just harder when it's the ones we love. And you KNOW, you KNOW what's coming down the road.
You all sound like you really care for each other.
I sure could use that.

Sue dew, sending good thoughts your GS way.
Pip, Happy Birthday! Hope your day was special.
Karen, you’ve come to the right place. We all share joys and sorrows and laughter at ourselves. This is a great place for support and lots of hugs. Welcome!

Karen, Welcome. I found MFP and this thread at age 62 after decades of trying to lose weight and keep it off. Since I found these great women, I've lost the weight I wanted to lose and kept it off. I've found a new way to eat and exercise so living a healthy life is easy and natural. I hope you'll keep coming back.

Did the deep water class today. The plan for tomorrow is to the Extreme Makeover The Workout DVD
Rye – How I wish I could say that I’m the same weight I was when I got married!
Kim – I was just going to comment to Katla that our police dept will take medications and dispose of them. Oh, another thing, when we had the cat who was diabetic and had to give him insulin shots, the vet told us to cut off the needle part of the syringe, keep the needles (we used a small baby food jar), you can then throw out the syringe in the trash since no one can use it, then when your container of needles gets full, you can just throw that in the trash. One time we had someone go thru our garbage, and they must have been mightily disappointed to find that they couldn’t reuse the needles!
Terry – I’m so sorry you have such pain. What a terrible thing to wake up to – more pain
Kylia – you were missed, but so glad you had such a good time
Put down the slurry of confectioners sugar and borax hoping to get rid of those small red ants. There’s another group forming in the front of the house and I ran out of slurry so I just put some gasoline on it, hoping that’ll kill them. Update: it doesn't look like it got rid of them. I'm just so frustrated that I poured some gasoline on that area.
Karen in VA – is your grandson considered in the gifted range? The problem Bryan had in grade school was that he’d finish his classwork in record time and then do something else. I can’t remember if we requested he be tested or his teacher had to. He was tested with an IQ of 129. The minimum to be in the gifted program was 130. However, his teacher recommended him for the gifted program, she saw how bored he was. In the gifted classes he was given much more challenging work which made him happy. Does the school have multiple teachers for the gifted? Can his parents talk to a counselor, perhaps he could be transferred to another school in the district? I don’t know if she’s the teacher for the gifted in all the schools in the district or just that one. I totally understand your frustration.
M – I do find that if I have refined carbs (white flour, etc), I seem to get more hot flashes. That is a trigger of mine. But complex carbs (fruit, veges) don’t seem to bother me.
Sue – what is a good price for red cherries? One store around here has them for $5.99/pound. Sometimes that store has things on “sale” that really aren’t a good sale at all. So is that a good price?
Suebdew – prayers coming your way
Becca – great visual! What a wonderful idea asking your family to get a bead! Maybe they can get them in their birthstone?
Nurse Karen – welcome!
Jess called. Seems her cat is pooping outside the litter box. This is something she has never done. Well, Jess’s bf took her to the vet up there who couldn’t find anything physically wrong with Shadow. The vet asked the bf to get a urine sample. This should be very very interesting. As we know, cats can hold it for a LOOONNNGGG time if needed. Vince and my guess? She’s reacting to all the change, Jess not being there any more. There’s going to be another change, in a few months she’ll be here for the long haul. Jess said that she might be asking us to take Shadow earlier. Personally, I think that would be good. She’s an older cat so change is hard. To be honest, once she comes here, she’ll probably continue pooping outside the litter box. But eventually she’ll come to the point where she’ll accept the change and stop. I know that at one point our cats were pooping and peeing in my exercise room even tho we had a litter box right across the room. I don’t know what precipitated this. But it’s been a really long time since this has happened. It would be nice if we could pick up Shadow on our way back from helping Denise.
About Denise – I feel really sad. She doesn’t have any friends except Angela. And now she’ll be moving away from her one and only friend. Personally, I would have liked to have just gone up there and visited with her and Pete. Instead, they want us to help them move. I hope Vince’s back is in good shape. Not sure how we’ll be handling it if his back isn’t. Right now I’m doing most of the lifting. Yesterday I put a 40lb bag of salt in the pool. Not that that’s a big problem at all. But I can see me having to lift boxes in the truck.

Hi Gals,
Terry – sorry to hear you are in pain, I have a machine embroidery business. I do logo’s, stuff for schools, names, art work… Christmas stockings, Monograms… PM me and I’ll give you my facebook page so you can see pictures. I have multiple things going, mornings I garden for any one of 3-4 clients, afternoons/evenings/weekends I embroider… There are a few other things I do on a “one off” basis… I am really living the “gig economy” and both love and hate it.
Karen – my heart breaks for your grandson….
I ran a workparty of volunteers this morning for the camp garden I work for – the amount of work 11 people got done in 3 hours was amazing! I always feel like I have a new lease on life after they have been there, it is like catch up has happened.
I have this great recipe for ribs, it takes soaking them in apple juice, then smoking them on the BBQ then baking them long and slow. They come out great but it is a pain – especially the smoking them part, keeping the coals hot enough to create smoke but not to hot as you don’t really want to cook them through that happens in the oven. Friends are coming tomorrow for lunch so I soaked them (4 hours) yesterday and am smoking them now, its supposed to be 4 hours, but will do 6 as the gosh darn fire keeps going out so I am in and out fussing with it.
And in California in May it should not be 59 degrees but that was our high today, which makes the BBQing on low just that much harder!
Smiles

Definitely got my exercise this afternoon! Helped move boxes from son's place. My dear husband took the Xfinity router box, so son's roommate will come home tonight and not be able to play his Xbox, (son took his own TV), or go online with his laptop, (husband took son's internet service router box)! Boohoo! Hoping his roommate won't pull a disappearing act tomorrow. We are giving him an opportunity to be able to use son's uhaul over the weekend. Only if roommate helps son move his washer and dryer though. That's the deal!
I'm one tired puppy!

Hi all!
I am in awe of all of you doing all this moving business, lifting heavy stuff. I have got to an age when I wouldn't even consider it. Not worth the risk of pulling something and getting an injury. Now I am an old lady I can gracefully duck out of all that. I try to prevent DH from doing silly stuff as well, but you know men! The other day he decided to rake the moss out of the grass and pulled a muscle in his side. His daughter ricked her back shovelling soil into a wheelbarrow and has been off work for over a week. Definitely not worth it. I don't think I have even mowed a lawn in 30 years. As my mother would say, "You don't keep a dog and bark yourself."
I am very fit, but it's always when you do something you are not used to that causes the trouble. Sometimes you don't always know it while you are doing it. It's the next day.
Roger Federer put his knee out while bathing his baby daughter!
Weather not looking good for the wedding on Tuesday. Thunderstorms.
Sue - I will be thinking of your whole family while your grandson is in hospital. I'm sure he is in excellent hands. We can't help worrying, can we.
Much love, Heather UK xxxxxxx1 -
Morning all,
Sue, thinking about your grandson and you and the family. Hope that all turns out for the best.
Nurse Karen ( @rocketgirl51 ) welcome! If you'd rather not be Nurse Karen, let us know what you'd like to be called, as we have more than a couple of other Karens... hope you stay, you sound like someone I'd like to get to know better.
Karen in VA, teachers have such amazing influence in our lives, for better or worse, that the influence of the hurtful ones has outsized impact, and especially ones we trust with our precious children and grandchildren. I'm sorry that your grandson, who is already fragile, got tangled up with one who is capable of holding a grudge against a child. My husband is in Rehab now ... starting to recover both physically and mentally. It's slow going and I'm tired. For the last two months I've felt like my life is like a ball rolling and bouncing down a hill, and I'm trying to chase it ... but slipping and falling and missing. Machka in Oz
Machka, I read what you write about your experience every day. While you feel you are slipping, falling and missing, we see you succeeding, and not just succeeding, but doing so without your main source of support, your husband. As a wise bear once said, "You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." I'd be curled in the fetal position in tears, wailing about the unfairness of life in general. As you walk beside your husband, remember that on some days, both of you win by simply being upright and putting one foot in front of the other. Anything more than that is icing on the cake.
Love y'all,
Lisa in Arkansas (had to stop a second and remember!)

Last weekend I signed up for the free trial of Zwift and rode on Sunday. I wasn't able to ride on Monday or Tuesday, then when I went to use it on Wednesday, it didn't work. Things weren't connecting up. I was tired so I figured I'd just leave it.
Thursday, I tried again, and it worked!
So Thursday and Friday I rode my trainer with Zwift for about half an hour each evening.
I've still got to figure out a few things with it ... and I need to arrange something so that I can reach my laptop when I ride. But it's amusing! And I've ridden with it three times, so at least I'm on my bicycle.
Today, Saturday, I decided to take a break from the trainer and go for a 3.1 km run outside.
Today reached a sunny, relatively calm high of 13C and I ran along the beach ... blue sky, blue water, crashing waves. I needed that.
Distance: 3.16 km
Elevation: 25 m
Moving Time: 22:45
Elapsed Time: 22:57
Pace: 7:11/km
Then I went to see my husband in the Rehab Unit of the hospital, and we went for a walk to the local park. Mid-walk we sat and talked and looked around and watched the people go by.
Distance: 1.40 km
Elevation: 2 6m
Moving Time: 20:49
Elapsed Time 45:39
Pace: 14:51/km
It's good to walk with my husband again. He's still got a way to go ... many challenges ahead. But at least he's upright and moving!
And then I came home, did laundry (wash and hang dry), and put together a curry chicken veg in my slow cooker. My plan is to eat a meal or two, and then freeze the rest in single-serve containers for future meals.

We moved to our current house about six years ago. We had a lovely home on the other side of town with a beautiful yard with lots of grass and many flower beds that needed tending. One day Jake walked into the house after mowing and said, "I'm finished with yard work. I want to move." He called the real estate agent that day. Our current house has very little yard and very little that needs care. He mows the tiny back yard with a light weight electric mower. All the yard work I do is something I've designed for myself. I limit my efforts to 90 minutes a day so I don't hurt myself or get resentful about it. I do only as much housework as is required tomaintain cleanliness and order.
Allie, have you posted a picture of your Zen Den Patio?
Machka, sending hugs to you as you walk this difficult path one day at a time.

Rita - your story about the trip with your mother reminded me of some good trips in 2003.
My mother is one of 12 children. She had 7 sisters. By 2003 she lost 5 of her sisters. 2 in 1991. 2 in 2002 and 1 in 2093. I decided I wanted to spend time with my mother and her 2 living sisters. I wad still working a full time job but we managed to sneak off for some weekend trips. I called these the "aunt tours". We drive all over Texas visiting family. From Galveston to far west Texas. We even made one trip up into northeast Arkansas to visit the place where their father was born in1893. We visited their cousins, nieces and nephews and lots of family cemeteries.
I took along 2 photo albums of fxmily photos I inherited from my grandmother. These were in an old trunk. I sorted them and put them all in achivsl safe acid-free photo pocket pages - leaving the backs viewable so we could see any writing on them, We got a lot of help identifying the subjects in the photos.
I wrote a report with photos after each trip and posted it to our private family website. It was so much fun.
My mother is 91 now and lives with my husband and me. She's the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Fond memories,
--Ginger in Texas8 -
Ginger - Your post reminds me that I am the last person to remember who is who in the old family photos. My grandmother would tell me the stories. I don't think my brother has much idea and my sons have not shown much interest. Maybe they will, one day. I ought to make notes on the old photos for future generations and get the photos up on a Cloud somewhere. Weird to think there is no one to ask about things I don't know. I don't even know what has happened to one of my cousins I was in touch with before this Christmas. I did not get an email card from him this year and haven't managed to find him on social media. He is the Keith in my book.
When my mother died I contacted everyone in her address book, but people don't seem to bother these days.
One of the drivers in writing my memoir was to somehow anchor all those memories so they aren't lost. I hope to go into more "backstory" in the next book as my teenage self becomes more aware of family history.

Rita – I’m glad that you had a good time with your Mother and that it was the best trip ever and that y’all will never forget it.
I think there are a lot of things that go on, that put people as ‘sex offenders’ that really aren’t; but, some things I guess could be. I think we have all been expected to be ‘politically correct’ that we can’t please 100% of the people 100% of the time. It is like ‘gun control’ … it is a matter of interpretation and both are pretty vague. There is soon going to be a time where a man won’t be able to tell a woman that she ‘looks nice’ – thinking ‘oh $#*T – how is she going to take that’? This “Me, too” movement has gotten pretty damn old, if you ask me. But, that is totally IMHO. Why wait 15 or 20 years to bring something up? You’d think there would be a Statute of Limitations on some of the things these ladies are saying. They’ve ruin reputations and put these men on ‘public display’ … and then 20 more will accuse them as well. What are they looking for – vindication or money or their 15 minutes of fame? OK, I can understand if someone got ‘raped’; but, I don’t understand ‘how one man could molest 200 women or young girls’. What exactly did he do to them? Now Morgan Freeman is up on ‘display’ and he is in his 80’s. So, he likes to look at women. Sure, he should not have asked ‘if she had panties on’; but, when a woman wears a dress or skirt that is so short that she could not bend over without showing her ‘hoo-hoo’ … it is pretty hard to sit on a dress or skirt that short; then when she crosses her legs – anybody could see up her dress. She should only be crossing her ankles.

One of my riding friends has put me in an awkward spot. She wants me to ask my teacher to lead trail rides this summer for the price of a lesson. I am not happy to be in this position. My teacher has been amazingly generous with her time and I don't want to be anything but grateful for it. I'm not sure what I'll do when I see her later today. Advice welcome.

Just to clarify. No one is going to jail or losing his job and family for telling a woman she looks pretty. We are talking about people who are actively trying to look under a woman's skirt -- I don't care how short it is. Forcing women to perform oral sex. Raping women. Threatening to destroy careers if sex acts are not performed. People who *kitten* in front of others to show power and to intimidate. I don't feel sorry for any of them. Enough is never enough. Until all men decide to treat all people with respect and stop trying to retain power by threatening us with their penis, victims need to speak out. I am not going to get into the psychology of intimidation that happens against women who rebuff harassment and sexual advances. I am sure there are many of us here who have been called a b@tch more times then we can count. And how many of us have been told that "boys will be boys," or told that we are somehow asking for it because we are women. For no other reason than that. All of those accusations drive victims to silence and in turn create more victims. Where is the sympathy and compassion for us?

Welcome Karen!
I sense frustration in your tone, so pull up a chair anytime, and sit for a spell (mentally). All your mental baggage just throw onto the sidebar here, we have someone that sweeps all that up, haahaa! The nice thing I have found, is you get so many different views of issues you might have questions on. These ladies are very knowledgeable! I mentally have them in my back pocket all the time. As you can see I'm very mental!
One thing I want to tell you is how much I admire your profession, and the good you are doing now. My dear husband received a new liver in 2014, and nurses in general saved not only my husband but I as well. I was very hands on, emptying drain bulbs, changing dressings when, before transplant, his belly would need draining. Course I didn't do the actual draining, just helped mop up! He had a years worth of stent work to try to keep the bike ducts open, but in the end he had a procedure to re-route his bike ducts directly into his large intestine/bowels. This was in February. Now he's doing well! As a nurse you can appreciate this pic. For those of you squeamish, well just ignore it.
Anyways, nice ta meet cha!

SueBDew: Prayers for your DGS and the whole family. I'm happy to hear that he's getting up slowly and walking. That is great news.
Machka: I am delighted that your DH is making good progress. You're doing a good job taking care of yourself, too. WTG!!! :flowerforyou:
One of my riding friends has put me in an awkward spot. She wants me to ask my teacher to lead trail rides this summer for the price of a lesson. I am not happy to be in this position. My teacher has been amazingly generous with her time and I don't want to be anything but grateful for it. I'm not sure what I'll do when I see her later today. Advice welcome.

Just tell the instructor straight up, thanks for thinking I’m good enough to teach a class, I’m flattered but honestly, I’d rather not.0
