Then I made coffee. I am on my second cup, and I am not a coffee drinker. I will probably regret this decision later. It did give me some great comebacks for @shanaber 's trail associates, but I deleted them I wouldn't actually say any of them. I would just think of them after I was already past the person and the moment to say it was gone, and then kick myself for not being more assertive. Oh well.
On the comebacks... Hahahahaha that is So totally me. While I am running and even sometimes after I get home I think of all these things I'm gonna say, wanna say and never end up saying!
Oh dear, they were coming towards you! [Facepalm] Does that mean you can just run right into them?
Congrats @KeepRunningFatboy ! Way to go meeting your specific time goal!1 -
Awesome time @cburke8909 for your HM! Great that you beat your goal!
Congrats @KeepRunningFatboy on your HM goal too!

Arrived early. Used some time to just walk around and listen to some tunes. Race starts at 8:30 am. At 8:05 am I began jogging lightly. Jogged 2 miles EZ pace before the start and lined up at the back. The goal is to run 2:00-2:05. I just want to see 9:30 or less for each split. So yeah, 3 miles out Northeast and back, then about 3.5 miles Southwest out and back. Not all roads have traffic control, really small event. But they did have water and popsicles at some tables. 70 degrees, a little humid, and barely noticeable breeze. So I made my goal, finished in about 2:01.
One thing that I often do is use “races” as training runs. Today was half marathon number 73. I had a great time.
Well done!1 -
Race report: Westfield Half-marathon
Goal: 1:40
Friday night I look at my nutritional information and I haven't consumed nearly enough carbs. I decide to supplement my day with a carb heavy bowl of oatmeal.
Saturday morning, wake up at 530 after a full 8 hours of sleep, eat breakfast and drink coffee and large bottle of water. I decide to pack some cooler weather garments as the temperatures are hovering around 60. I'll be fine during the race but warming up and after I could need them.
I get too the venue about an hour and a half before the race and pick up my shirt and number. I decide I need a good warm up as my legs feel kind of stuff. (My runs this week we too aggressive, I should have gone easier.) The warm up does its work and I'm feeling ready. I head over to the start line about 20 minutes before gun time. Only a few runners are waiting there and I position myself to start near the front. Last year I was too conservative with my start placement and I had to weave my way through the first two miles. I have set up my virtual pacer for 7:35 per mile this should get me under my goal but not by much. The horn sounds and off we go. It is facinating to see the lead runners and my placement is almost perfect. I'm not being passed and I'm not passing and my pace is only minimally ahead.
The first two miles gain about 100 ft. of elevation. Its enough to make me workatthis pace and my heart rate is into zone 4. I notice a few runners slightly ahead of me that have that sub 140 look. I know there's a good amount of climb to the first 8 miles so I try to conserve. At mile 2 I'm on pace slightly ahead but not significantly. There's a water stop that I don't need badly but I take it just to be sure. Next two mile are down then up and my pace is slowed to almost 750 for mile 4. I'm feeling it and I need some relief. Mile 5 is downhill significantly and I run a 715. One lady who I passed on the up hill passes me going down. She comments that we will be leapfrogging most of the race. Sure enough on mile 6 the uphill climb means that I run another 750 mile but pass her. Mile 7 I work to return to the 735 pace but mile 8 gets the best of me and I'm behind pace with a 756 mile. I'm beat but the hills are done.
Miles 9, 10 and 11 are flat and I average 735 but I need to make up time not just keep pace. According to the maps mile 5 is the greatest decent but mile 12 feels like heaven. I push it trying to get back my lost time. A 715 mile and life is good.👍 I'm worried the race is long as my Garmin is registering mile splits ahead of the markers by enough to make a difference. Perhaps I'm not hitting the tangents well but my 732 mile 13 puts me close but maybe not close enough. I'm spent and I don't think there is any kick left in me. I'm looking for my family. They'll be ahead of the finish line. I see my four year old and hes smiling and cheering. My eight year old races up to give me a high five. I turn the last corner and see 1:39:50. Got to sprint. Hit the line with 2 seconds to spare on my watch but 3 on the race clock. Thanks boys motivation s powerful. Didn't stay after long enough to find out my AG place but I was 298th overall. Found out after that my little brother ran his best 10k a little under 46 minutes earlier. His pace 730 mine 735 not bad for 7 more miles and 19 more years of age.
Now whats next????22 -

Great race report @cburke8909. Yes, family cheering on the sidelines is THE greatest motivator!0
-
@cburke8909 - I saw that time on the graphic before I read the race report and thought, dang, he's better at pacing 1:40 than I am!
Today's notes: Went out for a group run, two 5 mile routes. The plan was to run 5 miles, then decide whether I was running 10 miles. Got about 600m in, and the left Achilles ache started building. It wasn't bad, but it was awful early in the run.
Hypochondria won out over denial. I stopped running, walked back to the store, drove home, went about my day. Hence, the status update with 3 minutes of running.
I was warned that there would be days like this. Tomorrow is another day, and it could be better. At least I didn't run so far today as to already know I can't run tomorrow.5 -

Congrats @KeepRunningFatboy ! Way to go meeting your specific time goal!
I always seem to have the same issues with walkers coming toward me. They don't want to move over and wait until the absolute LAST moment to do so. And I refuse to step off the sidewalk. So annoying.0 -
Lots of reading to catch up on, which will have to happen later, but I see @ariceroni, @skippygirlsmom, @AlphaHowls, and @girlinahat all have races so good luck to you all, and to anyone else that has a race that I didn't see.
@KeepRunningFatboy Great job on your half and meeting your time goal!
@cburke8909 Congrats on a superb race, excellent pacing, and a great race report!
@crowesnest16 Welcome to the group! Be wary about running every day though...it can be the fastest route to injury if you're not careful.
Not posted here in a while, so here's my dump of numbers. It's been a humid start to the summer, last Thursday being one of the more fun days. I'd run 8 miles before meeting up with the group, and they asked me how bad things were. Telling them I had been running 1:00-1:30 off pace while wringing sweat from my shirt gave them all the insight they needed.
Only another 59 miles to make goal, and a week to do it in; whether I can make it or not depends on whether we have any issues at work...our team is going live with a new application on Monday, and it's my turn to be on call for the week. That means my runs have to be on shorter loops near the office, and if I'm called during a run then I'll have to cut it short. I'll certainly be trying though.

Yeah Goal!
Skip and I ran the Runway 5K today at the Huntsville Airport. It was 2 miles one way on the runway then around the taxi way and back to the finish line. This is the first time they ran this event in 20 years. They didn't expect a lot of people so it turned into a bigger event. Originally, they figured about 500 entries, well it went slightly over 1500 with 1363 finishing. They had finishers medals, but after the race was over we found out they had 1,000 on hand and the rest on order, well I finished 886 and didn't get one at the finish line, but that's okay I'll get one when they come in. Skip let me wear hers for the picture.
We live 7 miles from the airport and left our house an hour early and everything was fine until we got right by the airport, then it took us about 30 minutes to get in and parked. The race was supposed to start at 7:00, we got parked at 6:50 and had to walk/run a mile or more to the starting line. Good warm up. Ha ha The finish line was closer to parking. I started to jog and Skip took off in front of me, I finally heard them saying they would wait until 7:30 to start. That was good news, it was gun time so you couldn’t even start late and get a good chip time.
The start was warm but it was overcast which was nice, of course a mile in the sun came out and it got really hot. I started off too fast compared to what I’ve been running, 10:53, I knew I would never hold that pace and I caught up to someone from Run for God and we started to run together so I was 11:47 11:55 after that which was more comfortable for me. I was happy with my finish of 36:35 11:32 pace (by my watch as I crossed the start line), finished 19 out of 46 in my age group.
Skip had a great race. She finished FIRST in her age group (15 – 19) there were 29 in her AG. She was 109th overall with a 23:18 time. The bummer was a weather front was coming in so they wanted us off the runway so she could not get her award there. They looked like crystal statutes of some kind from what I could see. I was good to leave since last time we were on the runway here was during an air show that had a micro burst during a storm that ended up with us in the ER with my boyfriend’s head split open. Glad today ended better.
TL/DR: we ran a 5K I was hot but happy with 36:35 19th in my AG 886/1363. Skip killed it with a 109/1363 1st in her AG with 23:18 time.
Pictures.

Well done avioding the ER @skippygirlsmom ! That is always a win! Congrats to Skip too!1

@RunsOnEspresso yeah on under 14!
@RespectTheKitty great job on the hour run.
@Shanaber I was complaining about the same thing at the Greenway last week. I understand if you don’t see me coming behind you, but good night you are coming right at me. Give me a lane.
@Scott6255 good news on the Achilles
@biketheworld I carry pepper spray too for the dang dogs not the people
@cburke8909 woohoo!! Great report
@KeepRunningFatboy great HM! 73 is impressive!
@garygse hard to believe you were hurt and couldn’t run not too long ago, fantastic mileage
Thanks @PastorVincent and @Scott6255

Marathon report/never again to follow, but the question I finallly have (been looking for an excuse) - what new garmin?
My Tomtom failed today at mile 25/7 hours. We all know that if it isn’t on Strava it didn’t happen, so while I wait to be tagged by others on the race to prove my worth, I ask what garmin have along enough battery to do the following:
Record during running race
Give intervals during said race ( I appreciate this will drain the battery)
Allow for manual extension of distance by website in the event of failure
Record swimming- both pool and open water
Have cycling capability ( candence etc) - or needs to be a triaton watch.
I have some ideas in mind - note needs to be small for my wrist although won’t wear everyday, and I like the garmin interface but am not fixed by it. Oh, erm. Under £300
I need to sleep now. If you only knew what I went through today....7 -
@girlinahat Congratulations on the marathon. (No wonder i havent seen ot on strava).
Garmin Fenix 5 does all that. It is more than 300£ though. It is not small but does come in various sizes. If it were smaller, itd be harder to read on the run.
The 735 is a bit less. Im not sure about the sizes though.
You've earned a new toy!

@skippygirlsmom Go Skip! That's awesome.1

I'm exhausted. Not sure how sustainable my circuit training and increasing my long runs will be over the next couple of months. We'll see!
I know taking a break when you've settled in to a grove and made a plan is hard. I think i could use a few rest days to let my legs fully recover and training to take hold. But i want to keep pushing forwards, i keep telling myself training on tired legs is okay- until its not (because I'm not 100% from surgery yet. Luckily niggles are still just niggles). .
Part of training plans should include a cut back week, right? Do you have a cut back planned? If you add one extra rest/active recovery day, I'll add one maybe.
I sure sleep better in this constant state of exaustion. No amount of coffee or red bull seems to kick it. Spring for a massage? Nap? Few extra fitness calories?
Thanks for the response @Elise4270. I hear you on sleeping better when tired. I could sleep forever.
The plan calls for cut-back weeks but not until later in the cycle, and not by huge amounts. I may have to work that in on my own. Our coach is really big on consistency and running 6 days a week, BUT he emphasizes that 15 minutes can count as a run. I feel like I have a long ways to go in building up mileage and it's hard to do that if only running 15 minutes on some days. I do think I need to run a little slower on my base runs and long runs though. I
get excited that my pace is improving and try to keep getting a bit better. The strength/HIIT training is helping a lot I think but I wonder if I get to the place of diminishing returns with that.
I like all those last suggestions! Naps and extra calories - check! The massage reminds me there is a place around here that has a runner's massage package with something like 5 shorter massages you can do pre-race and a post-race longer massage I think. I love massages and would totally do one a week if it was affordable.

@cburke8909 congratulations on your awesome time! So great you got that boost to finish strong from your kids.
@KeepRunningFatboy great job meeting your goal as well, and in completing half marathon #73!
@skippygirlsmom congrats to you and Skip on your 5ks. Nice 1st place finish for Skip! You guys look adorable.
@girlinahat I'm sorry to hear about your watch failure and whatever else you went through today - sounds rough! Hope you are resting and recovering.

@polskagirl01 - I kind of thought if I kept going they would move over especially since I was running with a dog! I had a similar situation today with another runner on the sidewalk (not the paved trail). Since I had Hobbes I moved to the side and stopped so she could pass. I have to say I was shocked that she didn't even acknowledge me. No smile, no head nod, nada. As she approached I said good morning, no response and as she passed me I shouted 'you're welcome!', no response. I hate rude people and can't imagine at least nodding my head or smiling for someone who stopped so I could go by. If there is a next time with her I won't go out of my way again.
@biketheworld - I have a small airhorn that I need to figure out how to attach to Hobbes' leash and carry it with me all the time. I think if that guy chased me down I would have told him the same thing - 'I have pepper spray and will use it if I need too!'
@RespectTheKitty - Great to see you back running (for an hour!) and enjoying it again!
@Scott6255 - So glad that your achilles is doing so much better!
@cburke8909, @KeepRunningFatboy, @skippygirlsmom (and skippygirl!), @girlinahat and @AlphaHowls - Congratulations on your races and finishing well!
I hope you are resting @girlinahat and doing ok! No matter what happened or how awful it was you ran a marathon!
@crowesnest16 - welcome! As others have mentioned be very careful of starting out with a running streak. I can lead to injury and burn out. Personally I think it is better to stay consistent with a program like C25K where you have rest built into the plan and still run consistently.3 -

Today was even slimier than yesterday because I wore sunscreen. Anyway, just a short one to keep my legs loose for tomorrow's trail race in which my goal is to... hmmm... not finish last? I think I finished last for the last one but it's hard to be sure because they had timing problems. (I had to send in a Garmin screenshot to even get an official time.) New timing company this time so we will see if I really am back of the pack
Actually, I think my real goal is to run as much of it as I can and let the chips fall where they will.

@sarahthes - I am with you on the slimy sunscreen. I am pretty sure I need to buy stock in the sunscreen companies! I hate the way I feel when I wear it even the dry touch ones, but I get so burned without it which is way worse... and of course the whole skin cancer concern.0

Long run today. I procrastinated but was lucky that the weather has remained mild and I could get way with it. High 60's when I started and low 70's toward the end, with overcast and cool wind for most of it. All of that helped keep me going. My legs were not happy, but I kept thinking they were going to loosen up. I wanted to run to the closest hill and planned to run it twice and then run back. Well I made it to the hill and ran it once but knew a 2nd was not going to happen or if it did I wouldn't make it home. As it was the run home was a struggle. There were stops and there was walking. No issues with other dogs (the broken gate/fence has already been repaired - YAY!) and just one rude runner. We (Hobbes) did see a snake moving through the rocks on the trail when we stopped to get a drink. It wasn't a rattler but I have no clue what it was - pink/reddish on top and grey underneath. The top color was a perfect blend for the dry pine needles all around the rocks though. I hurt afterwards - that inflammation soreness everywhere in addition to the normal tired, sore legs. Just don't touch me - it hurts!

Does anyone use the Strava app? I know lots upload from Garmin to Strava but I am using the Strava app directly. I want to modify the display specifically to show current pace and not the average pace overall. I would also like to change the order/color of what is displayed so I can see it easier. Let me know if you have any hints on how to do this...
