@girlinahat - 7 hours is a long time for GPS watches. My Garmin 935 could have handled it no problem, but it is near the top end of watches:
https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2017/03/garmin-forerunner-935-depth-review.html
The Garmin 735XT is a bit cheaper and should handle it:
https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2016/06/garmin-forerunner-735xt-in-depth-review.html
The Garmin 645 is another option, and it has the smallest face of the better Garmins
https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2018/03/garmin-forerunner-645-music-gps-watch-in-depth-review.html
(note, you could not use the music feature and make the full 7 hours - but GPS tracking should make it)
The cheaper Garmin (235) probably would not have lasted the full 7 hours. Might have, but would have pushed it.0 -
@girlinahat - still would like to hear a race report even if it is not Strava official3

@crowesnest16 Welcome aboard! Congrats on your goal, this is a great place for motivation for sure!
@bride001 So sorry about PF. I definitely relate, fought it for years. At one point, I was literally crawling around the house as it hurt too much to stand, let alone walk. Saw my podiatrist, had all the treatments (cortisone shots, oral meds, PT ice etc...) for almost a year. Finally, my only option was surgery. BEST decision I made! Didn't realize how much in spasm it was on a daily basis. Now, walking, biking, running...all pain free. Good luck to you!!1 -
Been doing a great clean out of things, & the other day, I found most of my running logs since I started, in 2013. Was interesting to look back on them & see where I was. On the flip side, I found my calendars from Nov & Dec 2013, & I was a running fool! Tallied up November's, & I ran over 49 miles! I was running 3 days/off 1, with some strength training as well. I sat and stared at them for a while, and realized that I need to get back like that. This "run 3 days a week, when it fits into my schedule, so really, it's only about 2 days a week..." is not working.
Need to find the balance between structure and fun.
So with looking at the weather while @ work, and realizing that at 7pm, it was still in the 90's, Feels like of 101, DP of 74...I opted for a dreadmill run at work. (Sans shirt, #sportsbrasquad!)
6/4 - 1.64 miles

6/9 - 1.67 miles
6/12 - 1.65 miles
6/15 - 2.01 miles

Dh has the 235. He doesnt think it has a swim function.
@girlinahat I have a 620 you can have, but it doesnt do swim ( unless its since updated- just checked its still only run ride race). its not small.. And it occasionally power cycles at the end of a run/activity or a race which is incredibly frustrating because I'm afraid itll lose my run. But it hasnt. i dont have a chest strap to send with it.
If you want it just pm me your address. Ill cover the shipping. I know your across the pond.

@cburke8909 @skippygirlsmom @AlphaHowls GREAT JOB!
@girlinahat CONGRATULATIONS for getting through whatever you just got through!!! I hope you're able to get some rest and process it all. On the topic of watches, I don't know about Garmin (@PastorVincent has great advice on their watches) but you might also check out Suunto's Spartan Trainer, as it does all of the things you mentioned and has great battery life. They claim 10 hours in the most draining workout setting, which seems about right in my experience. https://www.suunto.com/en-GB/Products/sports-watches/suunto-spartan-trainer-wrist-hr/suunto-spartan-trainer-wrist-hr-black/ Looks like it's in your price range Suunto's app doesn't "directly" connect to MFP, but I got around that by setting it to automatically upload to Strava (and then Strava auto-sends it here).

Congrats @girlinahat on the marathon (and sorry at the same time). Hope you are among the living today!
@alphahowls fantastic 10k race, AG finish, and smashing last year's time!0 -
6.5km today. I haven't ran since Monday when my phone got soaked...and it hasn't recovered so I guess I'll have to get a new one It was a pretty good run, had to stop a couple times and walk but considering I haven't run all week I expected it.
MTD 41km/60km I won't make goal this month but that's what happens when you take a week off at the end of the month.6 -
I was supposed to run 12 miles today but sadly my sleep was awful and I chose to try to get more. I am so unrested I want to cry right now. *sigh* I am going to have to start taking melatonin again until I can get my sleep study done.
I started wearing my Garmin while sleeping again (2 nights). I am definitely not getting enough deep sleep. It tracked all my awake time as light last night (with 1 min awake). Not sure how they determine awake vs light? I did at one point get out of bed because I thought I heard my dog bark (wasn't mine). So I am assuming that is what it takes as awake rather than my tossing and turning. LOL5 -

It was like this today. Finally talked myself into it though and got out there while it was not actively raining. I made an effort to keep the pace very easy. By the third mile I felt better and sped up a bit but was definitely happy to be done. Then took Stella for a nice walk for further stretching/recovery. Glad to have all that out of the way to enjoy the rest of the day (doing nothing, probably).
I listened to a podcast on Marathon Training Academy featuring Strength Running coach Jason Fitzgerald (who also has a podcast). It fit in really nicely with the dilemma I am having about being so tired from the strength/circuit training that it is impacting my running. I think I'll talk to both my trainer and my running coach about what he was saying and work on spacing out the strength workouts and the more intense running workouts as well as focusing more on strength/power and much less on endurance (because running is already taking care of that).

Ran 1 mile on the dreadmill last night and then fell asleep on the couch at around 7 pm while binge watching Monk. Was woken up by a family member at around 11:30 and I went straight to bed and slept in until 9:30. It felt great to catch up on sleep.
I had such a fun run in the rain today! Went only 2 miles, but I really didn't feel very tired and it was so nice to just take it easy. I switched up my route a bit around the neighborhood and listened to a new playlist which was really nice. I've noticed that a lot of you have mentioned rain lately! It seems to rain at least once every day this month, and usually I would shy away from it but I've started to really enjoy the feeling of getting a cool misting to keep myself from getting too warm. It's kind of invigorating really.
Also, I've been trying to take more time to think about positive things while I run to help myself stay motivated. I am a very self deprecating person and tend to always be thinking how slow I am or how bad I am at certain things. But writing literally hundreds of thank you cards to family and friends for coming to my grad party has overwhelmed me a little and I can't stop thinking about how many people have been supporting me throughout my life. I've never really thought about it before but it seems to always come up on my runs and helped me to push just a little bit harder.
The goal is to do another 2 miles on the treadmill tonight or go outside if it's nice enough for a jog. I'm really trying to bring my mileage up but I've been struggling with it due to a long to-do list that only seems to get longer. I think that's called "adulting?" lol

@polskagirl01 @shanaber thank you
I have a 235 and it does not have a swim function
@katharmonic ha ha love it
@kat_ontherun your post made me smile. I think we spend a lot of time not realizing how much people care about us, it’s nice that while running you think about this and it makes you happy and makes you want to push on. My DD was very humbled at her signing when at least 70 people showed up at the school for it, not only friends and teammates looking to get out of class ha ha but friend’s parents, administrators, the school nurse, school janitor, the resource officers, all her past coaches and old teammates who are out of school. I’m happy you know and feel the love of people. I think many of our people don’t feel this enough and it makes me sad. Sorry I’m sappy today ha ha

(((Warm sticky sweaty))) hugs its 90F (32C) here, feels like 95, dew point 70, humidity 50%. I'm just getting ready to go out . Luckily heat on the bike is more manageable and i have a relatively short run planned.
Couldn't have said better what @skippygirlsmom said @kat_ontherun ! It is wonderful to have family, friends, and folks support you and be able to take and appreciate that help and support knowing its because they all love you. I'm a bit cynical. So.... I'm glad @skippygirlsmom can express/ empathize with loving understanding, that some of us don't have/know. hahaha! I am cynical. And jealous!
4 -
@skippygirlsmom Thanks! That is so awesome that your daughter had so many people there to support her! It is really great to have a support system!
@Elise4270 haha! I can be a bit cynical too at times! If you don't feel like you have support - I bet a lot of the people on this forum would say that they are here for you. I'm cheering you on!4 -
01/06 3.48 miles

07/06 3.13 miles
20/06 3.12 miles
21/06 3.18 miles
22/06 3.19 miles
24/06 3.18 miles - that was one hot run!
I was reading the post about the problems with unrulely dogs and their owners. Its drivers I have problems with. Some of the roads are narrow and this is a scenic costal area so the roads are busy in Summer. I always stop and step in until they pass as I know I'll be the loser even if I'm not in the wrong but some don't even both to slow down and whizz past. I'm going to hit the next one with my water bottle to shock them. Maybe if they think they hit me it might make them think next time. The majority are considerate,

It. Was. Hot. And I was even slower than last time as a consequence, not helped by then having out & back sections on single track. Anyway, I pretended my phone was a go pro and recorded some segments and posted it to the MFP Facebook group. It's really wobbly. LOL.
Came away from the race feeling accomplished and happy, and I definitely got in a great workout!

A full week since my last run - spent the week traveling for work so long days and mental/physical exhaustion = no runs, no swims. Like @sarahthes I have been struggling in our Northern Alberta Heat wave, this is Arizona Hot - yesterday the thermometer on the north wall of my garage in the shade was 80F at 9 am by 1pm it pushing 100F = 20-30F above our normal average. Today another scorcher.
A slow 6.5km with 2 ladies from the run club up what is called the Friendship trail - part of the Northern loop of the Great Trail across Canada. It was a relaxing slow - enjoyable outing. The ladies had a good laugh at my " Tan Lines " I don't tan so my legs are blinding white even with all the running, hiking and general yard word.

So good to hear!
Thanks @kat_ontherun i know yall all are awesome here and support each and every run, runner, run attempt, DNF and PR. Thats why so many of us keep coming back.
I think dh is waiting for it to get hotter before we head out.... Hmmm. Feels like 97 now....
Y'all Canada-ians stay cool! I feel for ya. It's hot here, but we have AC. Pool? Sprinklers? Slip-n-slide?5 -
@Elise4270 I ran thru the spray park at the end of the race. About the last 10 seconds of the video I posted to the Facebook group. Then had a very cool shower when I got home.
@juliet3455 Weather.ca tells me that the temperature should break tomorrow and it will be cooler all week including Canada Day which is currently forecast to have a high of 18C. Guessing it will be around 10C for the start of the race next Sunday if the forecast holds up!2 -
Aw @Elise4270 that is SO kind!!!! But I might look around a test a few out and treat myself. There’s no hurry - I don’t plan on doing any more activities of 7 plus hours duration for a while.....
No race report as yet, but I read back through the last few posts and people were suggesting I should rest today. What are they thinking? I didn’t rest today, I RACED!!!! Only 2 miles or so, up the last hill of the marathon course (about 350ft elevation), did ten star jumps, got handed a cowbell medal then trotted down the hill back again. All that after we all had our shoes confiscated and had to find them again. 54 minutes to run 2 miles......
I need sleep now.12 -

I ran 6.2 miles today. Sunday is usually my long run day. I don't know if 6.2 miles counts as long, but it was all I could do today. It was just too hot to go any longer.
I've been enjoying the race reports this weekend. It sounds like lots of good running this weekend. I'm on my phone so I will just say good job to all!
ETA: I hit my goal for June! I guess I need to look at July and decide on a goal. It's a little harder to figure how many miles I will run when I am not training for anything specific.
2018 races:
5/19/18: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - 2:43:59.7. - 2nd place AG
11/10/18: Wags & Whiskers 5K7 -
Went to a city about 1.5 hrs. away because I am getting bored with my local city trail. Unfortunately, I didn't look into the distance of the trail first. It is a nice view alongside a big river, but it is only about 2 miles long. So I did some back and forths and also went out onto a little used road for awhile to get my miles in. 12.11 miles today
8 -
Hooray for everyone who raced this weekend! I can only live vicariously through you because I am terrified of races.
Today is a rest day for me, as it is Sunday, my usual day to be completely exhausted. Happens every Sunday, no clue why.5 -

@KeepRunningFatboy - 73 half marathons? WOW. That's impressive.
@crowesnest16 - Welcome and it's never too late!
@cburke8909 - congrats on a great race.
@PastorVincent - is the Dopey race the one with a 5K, half and full all in one weekend?
@skippygirlsmom - I'm the manager of an airport and have repeatedly asked to do a Runway 5K but our board president is convinced the FAA will frown on it. I think he's just a killjoy. Glad you had fun and glad they had such a good turnout!
@katharmonic - LOL - that Gollum image is so spot on.
@Marissaxzxzxz - I hear you re: drivers that don't move over. I've often thought if I reached out and knocked on their car they would be shocked. Or maybe not. These days you never know what reaction you'll get.
@bride001 - I don't know your PF story - but I struggled with it all last year. A friend suggested an insert called a "Walk/Fit" and it worked wonders. Didn't heal the PF, but I could walk pain free. I keep them in my running shoes now as a precaution.

June Running Update
Week 1: 18.1
Week 2: 33.6
Week 3: 34.3
Week 4: 36.2
MTD: 122:2
Making decent progress is adjusting to the summer heat and building my weekly base mileage and incorporating track workout on Tuesdays. Only will get a bit more challenging from here on out
Congrats to those that raced this weekend and for the person that has PF it is not fun. I am going through it now and saw a podiatrist 3 weeks ago. He recommended stretches and some exercises such as air squats and jumping rope along with never going barefoot and using orthopedics to help with heel etc. I will say the no bare feet does help (he recommended Birekenstocks Arizona Soft) sandals. Prescribed ibuprofen also helps the pain with higher mg dosage.5
