June 2018 Running Challenge

Haven't posted my run status for a few days so I am starting with that.
Yesterday's run felt amazing! There were times that it just felt like everything clicked and my form was right on and it just felt, well, amazing. We did have a couple of distractions at the beginning (technology issues and evidence of rattlesnakes on the trail (recent sheds)) and towards the end when a dog unexpectedly jumped through a broken fence/gate growling and barking, that scared the sh$t out of Hobbes and me. This particular dog has chased us before so I went directly to their house and complained. I am really getting tired of it. That and people being rude or not being able to control their dogs as was the case today. Today's run was a slower easy run that felt ok but I got so frustrated with all the rude people - Honestly this has been the case the last few days and I am not sure if it is me being too sensitive or just that people are being more rude. I mean do you have to walk 4 abreast across the trail so I have to stop and wait for you to move... or the guy with a dog he can't control who wouldn't stop so I could go by with Hobbes. We ended up stopping multiple times to let them go far enough ahead of us. This particular dog has come after us before when the owner couldn't control him and it literally drags the guy down the street or trail. The best though was the guy with two dogs on retractable leashes stopped in the middle of the trail with a leash stretched taut to both sides. He is lucky he didn't 'catch' a cyclist zooming along!
Done ranting! I just need to get out even earlier than I did today, before all of these people are out or go a different route.
Now to catch up on everyone!

Nominal June mileage goal: 160 miles
Real goals: Stay healthy. Survive 4 races scheduled in June, 2 of them outside my comfort zone. Start training toward Wineglass.
Today's notes – Today is a rest day, but I didn't report for yesterday. Yesterday evening I went to club practice. Garmin say the temperature was 70, but the humidity wasn't bad; IIRC, the weather app said dewpoint of 51 at the time. The 2 mile warmup on sidewalk and easy trail felt really good, just about normal, and with some shade on the trail it felt very comfortable.
It felt warmer on the track, but nothing really unreasonable. The workout Coach put up for people training for a 5K was 800 at T w/400 recovery, 2-3 x 1200 at T w/2 minutes recovery, 6-8 x 200 at R w/200 recovery. I let that talk me out of my planned 4 x 800 at R, but I went light on the volume: 800 at T, 400 recovery, 2 x 1200 at T with 400 recovery, 4 x 200 at R with 200 recovery.
Target for the 800 was 3:16; target for the 1200s was 4:56; target for the 200s was 43 seconds. Actual intervals came in as 800, 3:09; 1200s, 4:51 and 4:51; 200s 43, 41, 41, 43. It felt pretty good. Then when I was walking a lap to cool down, I realized my right calf ached and I smiled. It was the right calf, not the left Achilles. Both Achilles felt perfectly normal, and the calf was an ache that would go away after stretching. Sure enough, it did.
Had a few minor aches in the ankle this morning, but nothing about the 2 minute jog while the eggs cooked indicated I couldn't run today. I'm taking the rest day because 1) it's a scheduled rest day, 2) I just ran almost 6 miles 2 days in a row for the first time since trying to come back from the latest Achilles issue, 3) I just ran a good speed workout for the first time in I forget how long, and 4) I really, really don't want to go back on the couch. I'd rather run 3 weeks of 12 miles, 12 miles, and 12 miles than 3 weeks of 40 miles, 0 miles, and 0 miles.
Of course, I never know how much is really too much unless I find out the hard way; but I'm really tired of finding out the hard way. I have ample evidence to show I'm capable of running myself into injury. I don't need to prove that again.

Good luck @AlphaHowls on your race tomorrow.
@MobyCarp great news that your feeling so good after your back to back runs and speed work. Yeah, that moment of fear when your other lower leg pain reared its head would have sent me into a panic! Glad it turned out to be 'nothing'.2 -

5 mile jog. Not a good week. I’ll pull myself back together and get back on it.5

5k at the crack of dawn, at the park. Really good run this morning! It was cooler and the dewpoint finally dropped below 70. Felt so good I ran my first mile at 10 min, but couldn't sustain it. I need to start adding back some longer runs next month, my stamina is not as good as it was. 32 min total which is improving, I'll get back to sub 30 at some point.
Everyone there was so friendly and happy because of the better weather. I even got complimented by a guy from a local running group who said it was good to see me running like myself again - I guess other runners noticed me limping along with my knee brace! I shouldn't be surprised, I definitely notice other runners. There is an older man there who is my personal hero. I assume he is recovering from a stroke - his body useage is very lopsided. But he runs faster than I do, and he's always eating up miles, he's out there doing long runs every time we go.
We also saw a bunch of bluebirds, including one which bounced along the path in front of us. Good luck!
Prognosis for the next week: right back to blisteringly hot again. I'm hanging in there trying to make goal but it will be close in this heat.
By the way if anyone needs an inexpensive water belt, I picked one up at Ross for eight bucks. Can't remember the brand right now but it's usually a forty dollar belt.5 -
@shanaber I once had a lady tell me to stop running because her vicious dog will chase me. I looked at her and said Phoenix has leash laws and kept running. She had her dogs out in a green area and they are supposed to be on a leash if they are not behind a fence. After that every time she saw me she would grab her dog and put the leash on. I just rolled my eyes.1

Now dont you fall apart. Hmm dang i almost had a chubby chaser quip (keeprunningfatboy), but it seems to have eluded me with the distraction of these crunchy cheese whisps... probably for the best. I'd hate to come across pervy..or desperate.

I think all that resting did me some good. Anyway, cut my run a bit short tonight (I had planned on 5-6km) because it was so humid my sweat wasn't evaporating and also there was thunder and lightning.

That does sound annoying. It might be out of your comfort zone, but maybe try speaking up, in a nice way, with a smile. The walkers especially might not realize they're in your way. A friendly-sounding "Excuse me!" MIGHT help. But the guy with the uncontrollable dog would scare me.
Upcoming races:
6/30 Silesian Highland [trail] Half Marathon
7/16 CityTrail OnTour 5k
I counted C25k with my friend as running today, although it was 4 minutes running, 1 minute walking, repeated 6 times. The overall pace for my time with her was slower, but it's long run day, and I biked 22k last night to/from work and was already tired, so my desire to not run a single step further than I had to overruled my desire to not log it as part of my own running training. I did record it as 2 separate workouts though. 5.2k plus 14.1 on my own = 12 miles
Then I made coffee. I am on my second cup, and I am not a coffee drinker. I will probably regret this decision later. It did give me some great comebacks for @shanaber 's trail associates, but I deleted them I wouldn't actually say any of them. I would just think of them after I was already past the person and the moment to say it was gone, and then kick myself for not being more assertive. Oh well.
Have fun racing @AlphaHowls @ariceroni @girlinahat @skippygirlsmom and anyone I missed!

Long run this morning - felt long. I should have eaten something during the run I think, I felt like I was fading at the end. But it was a pretty good morning. Cooler but with rain off and on. It rained fairly hard for a while but we were under pretty good tree cover at that time so it wasn't too bad. The rest of the time the rain was light. One of those times you are sweaty from the humidity but then a little cold from the rain. It beats the 95 degree heat from last week though.
I'm exhausted. Not sure how sustainable my circuit training and increasing my long runs will be over the next couple of months. We'll see!

Ah, Saturday morning. My favorite day to run. There are great shows on the radio and I have plenty of time to run as long as I want.
Today I ran for an hour. A whole hour. I haven't run for an hour in months and months. The last five minutes were daunting, I could feel my shins tightening up, but I made it. A whole hour. And I averaged just over 13 minutes per mile. So that's... just over 4.5 miles. LOL
It's okay. I'll get back there someday. Even if I don't, it still feels good to be running.22 -

I know taking a break when you've settled in to a grove and made a plan is hard. I think i could use a few rest days to let my legs fully recover and training to take hold. But i want to keep pushing forwards, i keep telling myself training on tired legs is okay- until its not (because I'm not 100% from surgery yet. Luckily niggles are still just niggles). .
Part of training plans should include a cut back week, right? Do you have a cut back planned? If you add one extra rest/active recovery day, I'll add one maybe.
I sure sleep better in this constant state of exaustion. No amount of coffee or red bull seems to kick it. Spring for a massage? Nap? Few extra fitness calories?

5 easy miles this morning. Was really tentative taking those first couple of steps, but the Achilles really didn't hurt. I was pleasantly surprised. Just took it pretty easy, and felt good to be back out there.
I know I won't make my June mileage goal. I should have kept it at 75 instead of optimistically changing it to 100 one week into the month. But if I stay healthy and pain free, that will be better than hitting 100 miles.

1030 and I'm laying in bed in my running clothes. It's rained, may continue to. I've decided to scrap the bike today (unless it clears of by time i find my way out of these covers) and do a long run. Just can't get up long enough to make it to the car, to the park.. some one hit pause on the day while i find some motivation.1

Boy can I relate! I carry pepper spray with me now. I've had two bad episodes - one dog broke his chain to come after my dog. Then there was the dog owner who chased me down in his car to swear and threaten me. That little episode happened after his two dogs ran out in the street, hair on end, growling, going in circles around my dog. His wife ran out to grab them but the dogs just kept dodging her. So I told her that I did have pepper spray and I would use it if I had to. Thus - the husband being mad at me. Go figure.PastorVincent wrote: »It is humorous how one's perspective changes when we spend so much time outside in elements!
So true! Last night I watched my grandkids (ages 5 and 5 - not twins - one biological, the other adopted) play soccer in the rain. No one seemed the least bit phased. LOVED it.
And the house looks great! Hope the inspection goes well.
I didn't run much this week or last. I could use a work schedule and weather as my excuse - but it really boils down to making excuses. One week and 13 miles to make my goal. I can do it!

New Castle Half Race Report:
Arrived early. Used some time to just walk around and listen to some tunes. Race starts at 8:30 am. At 8:05 am I began jogging lightly. Jogged 2 miles EZ pace before the start and lined up at the back. The goal is to run 2:00-2:05. I just want to see 9:30 or less for each split. So yeah, 3 miles out Northeast and back, then about 3.5 miles Southwest out and back. Not all roads have traffic control, really small event. But they did have water and popsicles at some tables. 70 degrees, a little humid, and barely noticeable breeze. So I made my goal, finished in about 2:01.
One thing that I often do is use “races” as training runs. Today was half marathon number 73. I had a great time.15
