Finally actually made my goal in June after probably 6 months of being under.
So for July I'm going to decrease mileage because I am increasing weight lifting ... I think!
60 miles for July.
7/1 - strength training (shoulders), 3.2 miles
7/2 - strength training (legs)

Group Question???
How long have you been running? Do you have a story to share?
I'm not sure how to count my running time, because there were a lot of starts and stops! And there is no good story behind it, just "started to lose weight, stopped a few times, began to enjoy it many years later".
(which is also the TL;DR summary )
I think the first time I tried to start running (outside of mandatory laps in school) was when I was 15. I was crying in my mothers office because some boys at school had made fun of me because of my fat legs, and my mother wanted to help and offered we could start running together. We went out on a hot summer afternoon, tried to run as fast and far as possible (no walking allowed!), and by the time we came back home less than half an hour later I had thrown up twice and she had a horrible migraine attack which knocked her out for the rest of the day. And that was the end of that..!
A couple of years later (2005?) I tried again, again with the goal of loosing weight. That time I did a bit of research first, found an 8-week-program that started with run/walk intervals, and after a year even got to the point where I could run 60 minutes without walking. But I was never really in love with running - I just kept running three times per week because I was trying to lose weight (although I often "rewarded" myself with a bag of potato chips afterwards, so those 8-10kg I was trying to loose stubbornly refused to go away). In summer 2009, the weather was really hot for weeks, I had lots of exams to study for, so I decided to take a break from running, and somehow "forgot" to start again. I tried to start with a run-walk routine again summer 2011, but gave up after two weeks, for no good reason I can remember.
In Spring 2013 I gave it another try, and weirdly enough, that time I was beginning to enjoy it. I was happily running until August, when I pulled a muscle in my left thigh (not running; got injured in an improvised soccer match..) By that point I had really gotten to like running, so in October/November I did that stupid thing where I would try to do a "leg test run" every two or three weeks to see if it had gotten better (no, the pain still brought tears to my eyes when I tried, and trying to push past the pain did not make any muscles "loosen up" and magically stop hurting, so after <10minutes I was limping back home...); until I admitted defeat in December and took two month off completely. Of course, that meant that February 2014, when the leg was finally okay, I hadn't been running for four month, and had to start over from scratch again. But that time it was a little easier than the year before; and by the beginning of 2015, I was running distances up to 15km.
Autumn 2015 I had a few stressful month with new job and moving and stuff, and only did a handful really short runs in September/October, restarted running regularly in November, had to take another two weeks off after dropping some furniture on my toe, and I was back to 10km of running at the beginning of 2016.
I ran my first 10k race in April 2016, my first half marathon in May 2016, and my first full marathon in October 2016. I followed that up with a second marathon in May 2017, but I managed to mess up my left knee a bit during the training for that one, so I drastically reduced my running distance for a while afterwards. Started to increase my distance again after a few month of less running, had to take a few weeks break after falling and hurting my (other) knee in September 2017. I hope there will be no more running stops in my future! Right now I'm feeling good and cautiously toying with the idea of another marathon in October 201811 -
My July goal: 100 miles.
This is going to be interesting as I'll be on vacation in London for 3 weeks.8 -
Hi all, not sure what mileage to try for.... Just getting the time to get out will be enough for me! On thesis count down and kids are on summer holidays so busy busy house for next 2 months!
I had to take a few weeks off as I had to put my 14yr old cat to sleep (incurable tumour in his small intestine) and a project deadline for my thesis and my trainers were just too worn out and killing my poor knees, and I just couldn't justify spending too much money on a pair but I now have a new pair on their way to me in the post! First time I've had new balance so I'm not sure how well they'll fit etc but fingers crossed!9 -
I walk minimum of 5miles daily so in a month I can do 150miles.I will try to do 150 may be a bit more or a bit less can’t say yet.6

i started running in 2015. i didn't want to be a fat bride. I really like half marathon distance. i kept running because it made my dog happier and me too. marriage ended in an OD and i lost my best friend of 11 years 3 months into our marriage. I'm trying to get back into running seriously. not just a little here and there. my dogs like running. my semiferal was scared of everything but she finds a lot of confidence and release in running. she gets very upset when she doesn't get to come for a run.

So, I do not know your level of fitness or training, but if you are newish or even intermediate to this you will want to make sure you are taking at least 1 rest day a week. It is way too easy to overdo it and burn out or get hurt. Just something to consider. Some of us (including me when schedule permits) do run every day for big stretches, but by far most runners only run 3 or 4 days a week.3 -
7/1 rest
7/2 4miles
I'm starting a beginner marathon training plan - eekkk! I'm going to attempt it and see how I feel as the mileage increases. I'm also willing to repeat weeks if I don't feel ready for the following weeks increase - especially in this heat and humidity. So this month's mileage goal based on the training plan is about 147 miles.
I'm also terribly behind on posts so I'm going to try and catch up on posts while I'm on vacation!

This January I randomly came upon a post about UTMF (ultra trail Mount Fuji). I’m not sure why, but this race spoke to me loud and clear. I need to do this, and to that end, I need to get myself back up running.
Ok... this seriously intrigued me, so thanks to you I did not get to sleep until nearly 1:00 a.m. reading about this beautiful, rugged race and watching a 45 minute video on the 2018 race that took place in April. The part at the end of the 64 year old finally completing the full 107 miles (170k) after three failed attempts was touching and inspiring.
Are you thinking of doing the STY (57 miles/92k) or the full monster? And I wonder how hard it is to get in... There is no way I could ever manage to get myself to Japan to run this, but did it ever get me dreaming and my running juices going... I hope you do it someday (and I believe you will) and I will stick around in this group of idiots just to read your race report!

Ok, I found the thread and am in for another 100 miles this month!
@sarahthes Congratulations on a great race, especially after such a rough night!
My first TRAIL half marathon recap: SORRY it's long!
The race was awesome!!! I was worried about getting lost. The pre-race technical meeting was basically "Ok, you guys know the course. You have red and white striped tape, then sometimes you'll have wider red tape. Watch out for all the places where the full marathon splits off and rejoins the half marathon course. Any questions? Ok, let's go." I was still stuck on that first part, wondering, "Wait, WHO knows the course? I've never been here before..." but off we went. Fortunately the course was well-marked.
There were only about 50 runners for the half, and after the first 500 meters or so up the initial hill, I was in second to last place, which was totally fine with me. The course was absolutely beautiful - forests, fields, hilltops with gorgeous views, and I had it all to myself for a good bit of the race. I slowly caught up to another runner, and passed him in the woods when the terrain got a little more difficult and I decided to take off. Then the course left the paths and went through places where there wasn't an actual trail, but clearly someone with a sense of humor thought it would be fun to make runners go through. When I reached one steep drop, I passed another girl who was trying very carefully to figure out a way down. I just plunged straight down, sliding and aiming for the next tree/stump/whatever I could catch. This whole section of the course, I'd see what was coming up next and would just laugh. It was so much fun. I took a few pictures, but then decided it would be safer to put the phone away so I'd have my hands free. And then randomly it turned and you came out of the woods to run around a soccer field with an aide station in the middle, before getting back on another trail. The first 15k literally went by with me *almost* feeling sad that it was going by so quickly, as I was having the time of my life. I did try different strategies on the uphill sections, and sometimes it was just as fast to power-hike them, plus I felt like I was wasting energy trying to run them (at what ended up being the same speed).
I passed a couple of back-pack marathoners, and then finally caught up to a couple I had been seeing just out of reach in front of me for a long time. Said hello and compared watch distance, as they thought theirs was off, then wished each other good luck and I kept going. So I had slowly moved up to 6th from the end. Then one by one, the top three marathoners passed me. They had an hour head start and had covered twice the distance as me. It was inspiring to see them go past!
And then the course went through someone's backyard, around their vegetable garden and up and down some more fields, I passed another lady, and then I saw the strangest thing I've ever seen while running... I'm assuming it was the leg of a wild boar, lying along the path. Nothing attached - just a leg with a hoof on the end. I didn't stop, figured it best to keep running. The last 3k were more challenging, with more crazy hills and me starting to get tired and worrying that people I'd passed earlier were going to catch up to me, and then telling myself to quit worrying about them and just run... but I knew I was almost there, and then I'd look around at the view, and it was all good. My watch hit 22k on a long uphill section, and I figured the finish line had to be just over the top and around the corner. Sure enough, I soon heard them announcing the 3rd place marathon finisher who had been just ahead of me on that long final hill, I rounded the corner and there was my husband cheering for me. The kids were wrestling in the field but soon came running too.
The half marathon distance was perfect - it ended just when it needed to. And after the first 500 meters, no other half marathoner passed me for the rest of the race, which of course is because it was a small race and I started out at the back, but it also makes me feel good about my pacing. My overall time was 30 minutes slower than my HM PR from 3 weeks ago, but I feel like the time is meaningless unless you are comparing it to a run on that same course. I'm very happy with how I did.
I got cold as soon as I stopped, so suggested we go back to the hotel so I could shower and then we'd go get some lunch before going back to watch the awards ceremony and see if I won any door prizes. We timed it perfectly, but apparently everyone finished before the cut-off times, so they did the awards early and were cleaning up we got there. I asked if they had the results, and something didn't seem right about the age group placement I saw, but I was looking at someone's phone and it was really small, and the finish time was similar to what my watch said (I forgot to stop it, of course, so wasn't sure), so I didn't worry about it. Turns out they have me in the results as a male... I actually should've gotten the 2nd (also last - so no big deal) place age group award for my real age group. Hmm... I did send them a message about the results. But whatever. I had SO MUCH FUN!!!
Today I'm really sore. Like marathon-level sore. Hmm. Maybe I should've biked today instead of that 9k morning run I did, but it's too late now. But of course it's a good kind of sore, because I took on a big challenge and got through it with a smile on my face.

Well you certainly picked a rough time of the year in the Northern Hemisphere to start one! Just be ready to have SLOWER runs feel HARD AS HECK due to weather. Watch the dew point, and try to run when the sun is not blaring down full force.
You can do this.

those of you running in wisconsin....
i highly recommend the Door County Half Marathon. It will be may 4th next year. not too big, not too small. beautiful scenery.
i see a few people running in the area so i thought i would make a bid for them4 -
I'm gonna join for some accountability! I'm new to running. I tried doing c25k on a treadmill and got up through week 5 but found it super boring, so I quit a month or two ago. Last week I decided to give running outside a try and yesterday I actually had a really good run I was so proud of myself. lol. I'm gonna give myself a goal of 25 miles. I only go out 3 days a week.
Yesterday I ran/walked 2.86 miles - 22.14 to go10 -
@sarahthes and @polskagirl01 congrats on your races. Great reports! Sounds like you both thoroughly enjoyed yourselves, which is the best part.
@zdyb23456 good luck with marathon training! Do you have a race in mind? I feel that eeekkkk, I really do.2 -
@Polskagirl01 Sounds like a very fun race and an outstanding course.
Trails are a bit tough for comparing times. For example, the trail I was running on Sat. took 4 hrs. for a HM distance... nearly double my HM race PR (even with hills/mountains on roads, my HM slowest time, was 2:10). On the same trails, I did a 12K a couple years ago in about 1:32 (I don't recall exactly, but was around 1.5 hrs). But it was way hotter on Sat. by comparison.2 -
@lffiormana, @Arieslife88, @AprilRN10 and @hesn92 - Welcome!
@sarahthes and @polskagirl01 - Congratulations on your races this weekend!1 -
And we are off! I ran in the afternoon yesterday after a few hours of storms washed a lot of the heat and humidity away. Of course I was hardly the only one with the same idea, but it was actually kind of nice being out and about with other people enjoying the weather even if I did have to do some dodging. This was my second time around the bigger of the two lakes nearest me and I did not get a blister this time, although I did end up walking a bit. I still made two PRs - longest distance and fastest mile at 10’03”.
I was a little sore last night and this morning so I might take a rest day tomorrow to be fresh for MY FIRST EVER 5K RACE! on Wednesday. I got an email this morning that the half marathon scheduled for the same event has been canceled because of heat/humidity, which made me worried about the 5K until my husband reminded me that a 5K is a lot shorter than a HM and we’re starting before 7AM so it should be fine assuming no thunderstorms - fingers crossed!
JULY MILES:

@polskagirl01 - Congrats on a great race. I loved reading your race report. Having just run my first trail race (a 10 miler), I completely understand your enthusiasm. I am currently obsessed with running trails!3

@polskagirl01 @sarahthes awesome race reports.
My very first race back in 2008 was an 8k trail race. I loved it, but haven't run another one since. The photo is the race winner (definitely not me) crossing the finish line. We had a flash storm the night before and the course was flooded. Rather than cancel the race, the organisers just reversed the course so that the runners ran through the flooded section at the end of the race rather than the beginning.
It was great fun and one of the sponsors had brought boxes of socks which they handed out to everyone when they finished.
