@AlphaHowls... ok after reading that, I am even more convinced that you are the baddest badass runner I know. Running all those miles in just one pair of shoes and with gout. Damn. Two things I know for sure... you got serious issues and I am a sissy.12

I’m not a morning person in general and after all my health issues, my husband has been taking care of the baby so I can sleep in/catch up on sleep since I generally don’t sleep well. Today, I got up early (for me) and went on a long walk with husband and baby. 3.25 miles in the heat and humidity of the early morning and I’m glad we got it done.
Regarding the spouse question: as the crazy one in my marriage, I’m usually the one making unreasonable requests. It’s very much usually not about running/hockey/whatever. In my personal experience it has a lot to do with my own anxiety/depression and how I associate things and a dash of lack of communication. “I thought you knew I needed you but you did x instead so now I hate when you do x.” Time, communication, and the fact that my husband is an absolute saint, all help. But we’ve only been married less than 3 years, so we’re not quite ready to go pro yet, might spend a bit more time in the minor league.
Oh yah, anxiety rears it's ugly head in weird ways. I read an article a few times about hidden ways anxiety comes out and I do almost all of them. I try to not do them but it's so ingrained I just do it. I need to be more self aware.
PS Yay hockey! I don't play, just watch. LOL
And the ways that an anxiety disorder can manafest over time can change as well. I’ve dealt with anxiety, primarily social, since I was a teenager. Only recently have impatience and bursts of anger been symptoms of my anxiety, to the point that I didn’t recognize them as such until I mentioned it in a check up and my doctor pointed it out. Whoops. My spouse is amazing at dealing with my anxiety but neither of us recognized his own disorder until it got so bad he was throwing up before work more mornings than not - we thought it was a symptom of his GI issues and that his panic attacks were just normal stress. His anxiety turned out to be a symptom of untreated ADHD and having that diagnosed and starting treatment was a huge turning point for our relationship.7 -
8/1 rest
8/2 9miles
8/3 4.22miles
8/4 13.1miles
8/5 rest
8/6 8.5miles
8/7 4miles (treadmill)
8/8 4miles
4 miles - not too bad. 80 and sunny, but I think the humidity was a touch lower than it has been. Still high, but I finished without dying

Those are my shoes. I probably have over ten pair laying around. The pair for running is only for running, there is a retired running pair that I can use if the others happen to get wet, otherwise no rotation. Same pair for running until retired. This current running pair has about 1000 miles now. I used to not let that happen, but I do not feel anything from them yet. The pair I have retired over winter, is my daily pair and I have a pair before that that I use in the yard.
I am grateful to see that I am not the only person that runs four digit miles in one pair with no rotation. I used to worry about mileage but it always felt like I was throwing away money, so I stopped. Now I run until the shoes fail, then I buy a new pair.
The shoes I am in now are rated for 300 miles and I am approaching 4 times that. That is a lot of money wasted if I had changed them out every 300.

This made me chuckle. Brad was a lawyer and his BIL is as well. We were out to dinner once right after I had started back to school and I mentioned that I was thinking about law school. They both enjoy, or enjoyed, their careers but related law school to systematic torture. Of course being who I am, I listened and decided to still give it a go once I'm done with my bachelor's.2 -

I wish I could get that many miles out of a pair, unfortunately d/t size(mine, not the shoes), the support always seems to break down at about 200-250 miles, knees and ankles start hurting and lower back starts tightening up. That is how I know it is time to nab new shoes.
ETA: 5 years ago at a lower weight I could go much farther with just a single pair so I am well aware that as the weight comes off my shoes will last longer.1 -
My girlfriend and I ate at an Indian cuisine restaurant on Saturday. I am up in weight by 5 pounds. Is there a lot of salt in restaurant food? It's very discouraging to eat out as it is always detrimental to my goal of losing weight. Does anyone else feel that way?
Yes. Restaurant food is loaded with sodium and extra fat. I cringe when I watch Food Network or Travel Channel food shows - they add so much salt and oils or butters when they cook! At least way more than I would ever add when I cook. I guess that's why theirs taste so much better than mine - lol.

I'm in a bit of a different boat... I'm the one that struggles and can be bitter. He is in the military. It means long hours when he's home, numerous training trips every year, and regular deployments. While I don't like the deployments and trips, it's the long hours when he's home that bothers me. Not just long hours, but even at home he's constantly "working". Either stressed about work or on the phone texting with teammates. I rarely will eat dinner with him anymore because he spends dinner texting. He's never "off".
I keep telling myself it's just a season of life and eventually the tides will turn and it will get better (I just hope we still remember why we like each other in the first place). In the meantime, I run so that I don't go insane taking care of everything by myself. At least he's supportive of my running. It doesn't really affect him because I have to arrange my schedule around his. If it's convenient for him, he will come to my races so that's nice.
Sorry to be such a downer! I'm generally a really positive person in real life

@ereck44 - as my nutritionist keeps telling me, salt generally is not bad for you. That said I don't like dealing with how much restaurants use (even on something as basic as a grilled steak) or the bloat and I like controlling how much I put in/on my food. We don't eat out often so I will put up with it once in a while.
@amymoreorless - someone asked me why I don't keep my phone next to the bed as an alarm instead of an alarm clock... your response will be my answer from now one
@rheddmobile - definitely join the REI co-op! But be really careful wandering the store. I have to have a specific list of things to go in for or I will find all kinds of things I 'need'! Oh also be sure to check out the used gear sales. One of the sales people told me they put out shoes that have been returned that they cannot resell, most of them having no wear at all.
@PastorVincent - REI is an excellent store as a customer and to work for. They are great to their people (monetarily, providing training, generous time-off, etc.) and that is usually reflected in how they treat their customers. Many of the people working in the stores end up staying for years because they enjoy it. They also have an awesome return policy. I haven't gone for a while but most of them also have community activities like cleanups or hikes most at no cost and some classes that do cost but they bring the equipment (learn to bike, learn to kayak, etc.) I have always told my husband that I will go to work PT there if I get bored. My entire salary though would go into running gear
@biketheworld - our husbands sound so similar! I too am the one who wants to do all the outdoor things and he would rather stay inside on the computer or watching TV. I also carve out a couple of hours in the evening to sit and watch TV and talk with him. I would love to move somewhere less urban to be able to do more outdoor fun things (Oregon, Idaho, etc.) but he is really not interested. I can do them here - it is just more crowded and more effort to find and get to. I also like to think that if we lived where the outdoors was more convenient I could get him to participate too in kayaking or hiking...
@AlphaHowls - I would love to know how you fit work into your day? With the distances you run everyday I can't imagine having time to work, sleep and eat too! That said you probably run much faster than me so it wouldn't take you nearly as long as it would me!
@RunsOnEspresso - Thanks, We are in a pretty urban area with no hills directly close to us. Last year they burned all around the gym where I go for training and it was evacuated for about a week and a few years ago my BIL's house that was rented out at the time, burned to the ground, literally nothing left not even the appliances... So fortunately we don't have to deal with the fires directly just lots of smoke, ashes and worry about others.
@dreamer12151 - So glad you were able to pull the 'real' you back out of those boxes!
@MegaMooseEsq - I had a similar experience to your SO. I had terrible GI issues and thought it was colon cancer or something equally bad. Turns out it was stress and anxiety caused by a really stressful volunteer situation I was in (running a conference with a terrible person). Finding out what the root cause was helped me again and again to recognize the symptoms when I would get stressed out at work too.5 -

For a counter-example, I've found that *not* retiring shoes early enough can cost me the equivalent of 5 pair of shoes in PT visits. But the couch time is worse.5 -

no, i've bought and not been part of the co-op. just don't get the same pricing0 -
PastorVincent wrote: »RE: REI: I will have to check it out - is it a membership required place like Sams Club?
Anybody can shop there, but you won't get dividends if you are not a member. Generally, members get 10% (more if you use the REI credit card) back at the end of the year (or sometime around Feb. or Mar. of the next year after all the accounting and such is done) for most purchases. It's in the form of a store credit, essentially, so not real cash. When I joined, it was $20, and I've gotten way more than that back in what comes out to buying the next thing at $0.
That doesn't mean I buy everything at REI. I just bought a bunch of clothes for a better deal at a Columbia Outlet store recently. But often, REI is competitive enough that the dividend makes it more advantageous.
ETA: By "member," REI is a co-op with members rather than a corporation with shareholders.2 -

When I was looking at their online garage sale (or whatever it is called) I am pretty sure some items had a member price.1 -

REI Outlet online is different, but the prices are not member-only. Yes, there are coupons send out throughout the year as well. There are some clearance prices on things, and I don't recall what they mean, but the last digit of the price indicates something. For example, if it is $82.73, then the '3' has some type of meaning. We don't always get dividends when we use those coupons.0 -

Funny you mention colon cancer, because it turned out he also had a gut full of precancerous polyps. In hindsight, it was lucky we were on the wrong track for a while because otherwise we probably would not have known there was an issue until he actually had cancer. Life is crazy sometimes.

I don't know. I thought some items had two prices and one said members. I looked at the membership because of it but ended up going elsewhere for what I needed.1 -

I got new ones because of leg soreness - it was definitely time! Putting on the new ones makes me feel like dancing, oh hey, I remember when the old ones felt like that, I thought I had just gotten used to them! Nope, the padding was breaking down. Maybe people with better joints can run more miles in the same pair, I need my cushy shoes.4 -

It's been fascinating reading everyone's responses to the question about partners objecting to running. I'm in the camp that it really matters why the spouse is objecting. On the one hand, save me from needy people who can't let their significant others have separate interests without a panic attack and/or acting like a child. On the other hand, it's a hobby, for most of us here anyway, and it needs to come second to taking care of the essentials of real life, like having a job, taking care of your share of household work, and occasionally being around to be part of a relationship.
In my case, when I was diagnosed with diabetes, my husband and I had a serious talk. He's naturally slimmer than I am, and both of us work long distance from home, which allowed him to live like a troglodyte for decades without serious consequences. His preferred way of life is to never see daylight, buy everything possible online, and survive almost entirely off of pizza delivery and Coke. I sort of hated it, but not enough to fight him for what I wanted. The result was that he was a little bit flubby, but he was basically recognizable as the man I married 25 years ago. Meanwhile I had become a lard *kitten* with diabetes. Me nearly dying in the hospital put the fear into us both. I told him that as a matter of saving my own life I was going to become healthy and reclaim my body, and anything that made that more difficult for me was going to be jettisoned, and I hoped that did not include him. And to do him credit he has bent over backwards to help me - he stopped drinking and eating crap in front of me, he keeps his junk in a separate cabinet, and he doesn't complain when I need to work out. He decided on his own that he didn't want to get left behind, and started joining me in the gym and on runs.
But yes, for me this is a hill I would die on. I need a good diet and lots of regular exercise to stay healthy, not lose my vision or my feet, and if someone wanted me to stop being healthy, I would regard that person as my enemy, and get them out of my life.11 -

Sort of hard to describe, but I will make the attempt:
3 days out of my week I work outside the home. I am a licensed professional counselor. I work from about noon to five, with clients. This is the time my mother usually will stay in bed and nap/rest.
24/7, 365 days of the year, I am my mother's caregiver. I push all her appointments to Mondays and Fridays. I get up at 4 AM, pretty much every day, stretch a bit, then out the door to run. My speed, give or take, is under 10 minute miles. 10 miles takes me 1 hour, 35 minutes. 18 miles takes me 2 hours, 45 minutes. and so on and so forth. I do quite a bit of meal prepping and I also do not mind eating same thing day after day. My meals are more seasonal than anything. Hot weather...salads are the base....cold weather...usually something that I can heat after a prep and not freeze to death. Hmm, sleep, that has been my challenge for a long time. I am working very hard to get at least 7 hours rest time (not sleep). I have to make that a priority of getting myself ready for bed and laying down. My kidneys hate me and I have to get up pretty much every hour, but I have lived with it this long, I just do it.
All time that I am not running or at work, I spend at home on yard work, house work, caring for my mother. Ok, I have bored all enough.....

Group speedwork tonight was a 40-minute tempo run. Extremely humid still but a bit cooler. The clouds looked pretty ominous at the end and it let loose just as I was leaving the track. Glad we were done because while a nice cool rain would have felt good, the torrential downpour was a bit much. We did a short warm-up and cool-down, plus 8 sprints and it all added up to just over 6 miles for me. I felt awful in the beginning but better in the second half of the workout. Definitely had to work against the mental desire to quit tonight - which our coach had a nice little speech about before we started. Good marathon training right there!
Still debating my rest day and long run schedule over the next few days due to being out of town on Saturday. Tomorrow may be a rest day unless this rainstorm brings some lovely cooler weather I need to take advantage of.7 -
There are two runners.
One guy wears minimalist shoes, and complained his feet hurt all the time.
One woman has run 1,000 miles using just one pair of shoes, and complains her feet are in pain.
Should you point out the obvious? Asking for a friend.8
