I've been told you're not a real runner until you learn to fire a proper snot rocket.
@MobyCarp I mastered the art of the proper snot rocket during the Central Texas cedar tree pollen-apocalypse of 2017. I guess that means I am a real runner?RunsOnEspresso wrote: »Well, I will not be joining the 100 mile club this month. I woke up Monday with a dry, sore throat. Yesterday with a raging headache and dry, sore throat which turned into the fuzzy feeling. And I have a lot of snot draining down my throat (tmi?). I haven't ran since Sunday because I am tired and can't breathe well. I probably won't run tomorrow. Friday is up in the air. If I do it would be a short one. I'm at 83 so maybe Friday I'll get myself to 85.
@RunsOnExpresso They say there is no such thing a TMI in the running community. I hope you feel better soon!3 -
@kgirlhart Skunks terrify me.
@missevil What @MobyCarp said...if you used paper and pencil to determine your max heart rate, you've almost certainly got the wrong number. Unfortunately, it can only be measured with sweat, tears, and several choice cuss words.
Total sweatfest this morning. Lovely. On the plus side, tomorrow morning is my last morning as primary on call before I become the secondary on-call for a week. Just need to remind the next guy to keep his ringer on when he goes to bed so that I don't get called again like last time.

@garygse Skunks are actually sweet. I used to work at a place which fostered skunks. They will give you plenty of warning, unless you are a dog there's no reason to get sprayed. The only problem is they can be too friendly - the ones near the cabin where we used to stay would follow tourists who mistook them for cats. Well, and in some areas they do carry rabies, although not in my area. But according to my vet even then they are better than other rabid animals because a rabid skunk will go off and hide and die, instead of running around biting people.5

@rheddmobile Even the most logical and reasonable post won't stop me from being terrified of their stinky butts!6

I have a question: I've read a bit about heart rate zones and which you should train in. Based on the formulas on the web, my zones are something like that: (I said that I'm untrained, maybe I'm not *that* untrained anymore...)
Fat burning 109 - 127
Aerobe 127-145
Anaerobe 145 - 163
My regular running speed is slow enough to hold a conversation, so I think I'm not really overdoing it, but my approx. heart rate is usually ~149, which is a bit too high, according to those numbers.
I assume that I'm a bit trained already (I'm commuting by bike) and am still in the aerobe zone, but my actual question is something else anyway: how can I go lower? For me, it's physically not possible, to run much slower than what I do already. I can't reach an HR below 145.
First problem: Believing the web for heart rate zones. I ran for a couple years without the zones generated by Garmin making any sense at all. Turned out the zones were set wrong for me.
Systems for setting zones need one or more of: resting heart rate, lactic threshold heart rate, maximum heart rate. Resting heart rate isn't a problem. You just measure it in the morning before you get out of bed.
Lactic threshold heart rate can be measured accurately in a lab. A few months back, I think it was @MNLittleFinn who posted a routine to estimate the LTHR; it's such a tough workout that I've never done that routine. Instead I looked through HR results from historical races and found one that came close to matching the test.
Maximum heart rate can be measured in a lab. The commonly cited formula of 200 - age is really easy to use, but it's garbage. By that formula, I die every time I run a race shorter than a half marathon, at some half marathons, and at a lot of speed workouts. I'm using a maximum HR estimate based on my peak HR at the 2016 USATF National Club Cross Country Championships, where I can match my peak HR in the race with the top of the wall on the 3rd loop, when I would have slowed to a walk if the course hadn't shifted to downhill right there.
Once I have reasonable max HR (I'm using 185 as an estimate), I Karvonnen method to compute zones; I think Garmin calls it the HR reserve method or something like that. Basically, it uses percentage between resting HR and max HR to compute zones, instead of the more simple minded percentage of max HR.
Long story short, if your calculated zones give you HR numbers that are impossibly low for easy exercise, it's far more likely that there's a problem with the zone calculations than a problem with how you're running.
Here's the link to the discussion where I mentioned how I found a LTHR to use: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10607880/hr-tracking-training-101/p13 -
@travelling_lots - I can see to pictures on your profile. Hilarious!! I think we could use those at the 4-way intersection near my house! Would you mind if I copied them?1

Group speedwork tonight was 60-90-30 second intervals. The first 2 sets had 90 second recovery between, and then it was reduced to 20. That got tough. With 15 minutes warm-up, 4 sprints, and 10 minutes cool-down gave me 6.3 miles total. It was like a steam bath out there, then it rained for a while, then it was slightly less steamy, maybe. I really noticed that it's getting dark earlier tonight too.5 -

Planned rest day on Monday has I knew I had an evening meeting, but thunderstorms and heavy rain added another rest day yesterday. I was pretty cranky at the start of my run, but calmed down with some music. Wasn’t sure how long I’d go for, but ended up doing a loop so it was either keep running or walk home. At 4 miles I was done, but focused on trying to run for three more songs as that would get me closer to home. I made it to 5 miles and had just under a mile to walk. Temperature wise it was a great run at mid 60’s and no humidity, but I started out too fast and paid the price later. On a different note, thank you to whomever recommended “Let Your Mind Run” by Deena Kastor (I think it was @Elise4270 ). Such a great book so far! I borrowed it from the library, but I may have to buy it.

Yes, very true. I'm from the west coast of Canada. And in Vancouver there is a park called Stanley park. It's big and beautiful. I grew up walking that park, even on my dates. Growing up we were taught about boundaries and respect to all living things. As long as you respect animals there is no issues that included skunks. I used to take raw eggs fresh nothing spoiled and sit at the bench and the skunks would come out to the path and I would bend down and extend my arm Palm open holding the egg it would come up and take the egg and leave. Same with raccoons they love dry cat food. And they came up like the skunks and ate out of the Palm of your hand.
But years later I heard people were feeding them bad spoiled food and the animals were getting sick. So feeding park animals is prohibited unfortunately.
Good old days only takes one to spoil things :-)2 -

Happy to say legs were not too upset by Tuesday's long run, no shin pain at all. Something must be working at last, maybe the few minutes of enduring the foam roller before bed each night? Anyway nothing worse than tired feeling legs yesterday and they felt fine this morning. However, I am starting to feel a bit worn out probably due to this darned heat that won't go away and not enough sleep. Will be interesting to see how I feel during tomorrow evening's race, probably like death warmed up (literally). Not intending to actually try to race it at all, just treating it as tomorrow's usual training run but in the evening and in a different setting and with a few more people and a T-shirt all for a good cause :-)
My brain works in strange ways still when it comes to running (like no matter how much I yell at it it thinks walk breaks during runs are cheating, d'oh!) and for some reason one of these strange ways is that it reckons it's ok to not try to race at charity races. Thank gawd for that!

A little short of my goal for the month but considering I was on vacation which included two 11-hour driving days, I’m ok with it. If I didn’t have a trail race on Saturday, I would squeeze in another 5 ½ mile run, but I’m not going to push it. Congratulations to everyone reaching their August goals and special kudos to those gutting it out in the summer heat and humidity!
Upcoming Races:
September 1 – Iron Mountain 16-Miler
September 7-8 – Blue Ridge Relay
October 20 – Cherokee Harvest Half Marathon

@PastorVincent I think @travelling_lots was referring to the Hellonhills link.
Skunks: Driving to a friends Cabin I could see a dog on the edge of the road flopping around, first though is he was hit by a car, as I got closer I could see that it was not injured but was rolling in something at the side of the road. Suddenly the smell hit me inside my vehicle - roadkill skunk. The dog was having a scent marking frenzy.
That's one dog that the owner was not going to be happy when he got home.
A short 6km riverbank jaunt last night before going to a wrap up meeting for our local triathlon, really just an excuse to sit at the Pub and have a Beer.

3.23 of jog/run song intervals with cool down, nothing pretty about it. So over the humidity and temps of 70-75 at 0600. 74.46 for the month per Endomondo.
Just want to thank @Teresa502 for putting the bug in my ear about this http://werunevents.com/haunted-half/
I may end up running it just for the beer

Today's Yesterday's notes – It was still hot when I marked the first mile of the 5K course. Got to chatting with other runners, and neglected my warmup until after the kids' races had started. Set off to run the first part of the course, and on the way back encountered Coach with an orange flag, escorting the lead kid in the mile race. I tagged along with them, and noticed it was comfortable. The kid was pushing Coach past his easy pace.
Coach's phone rang. He handed me the flag and told me to run her in. This turned out to be the 6th grade girl who kicked my *kitten* in the 5K last week, and she came in first in the kids' 1 mile this week. That was kind of fun.
Along about then, the clouds had gathered so it was more comfortable. It started sprinkling a bit just before the 5K start, but was okay for running. Garmin has the temperature then as 84º F; but it didn't feel all that bad. The actual race lasted longer this time. I wasn't quite able to catch one guy going up the grassy hill, but I could see he was working much harder than I was; I passed him on the road downhill, then passed 2 other guys on the road uphill. Those 2 passed me on a downhill stretch of trail, I went past them on the uphill, I missed a turn and let them past later in the trails, and that was that. Didn't matter; they were a couple decades younger than me and would have smoked me when we got out of the woods anyway. Finished the 5K in 22 minutes even, same Garmin time as last week but not as nice running weather. OTOH, I had better rabbits to chase this week.
The sprinkles had turned into light showers by the time we started the Tour de Pain mile. That goes up Reservoir Road on Cobb's Hill, around the reservoir, and back down to curve around and finish on the grass. The field took off faster than I did, but I've run this hill many times. I lost count of how many people I passed on the uphill, when I was focused on catching the 40-something guy who's a little faster than me. I caught him, passed him, and kept going; but as expected, he got me on the downhill. I'm better than I was, but I have room for improvement as a downhill runner. Finished the mile in 6:09 per Garmin, which also says it was a short course. If Garmin is right, it was closer to 1500m; but I'm happy with how I ran that one.
The 400m was supposed to be a gentle up across some grass, then turn and go up the steep grassy hill. This was changed late to be a loop of the flat grassy field, same as the kids' 400m. I couldn't work up any enthusiasm for the revised course, but the clouds had gathered enough that daylight was an issue, and the rain was steady by the time we ran the last piece. It got run in heats: under 30 years, 30-49 years, and 50+ years old. Sigh. I didn't get to chase that 40-something guy. Started out on that grassy loop without real conviction, behind 2 50-something guys. After the last turn, I ran the end more like you ought to run a 400. It wasn't enough to catch the guy ahead of me, but no one caught me. Finished in 1:14 per Garmin.
The distances were all probably short of the nominal course lengths. Garmin shows a nice pattern of average paces progressively faster: 8:20 for the warmup, 7:30 for the 5K, 6:27 for the mile, 6:17 for the 400m. Those make sense for how hard it felt like I was running and what the terrain was.
Official results aren't posted yet, so I don't know my official times or exact placement in the field as a whole. No ringers showed up, so I won my age group for all three races and the series. Prizes were modest; I took a gym bag for the series award and a string bag for the 5K award. But it was a fun event, and a little bit of rain wasn't all that big a deal.
Monthly goal assessment: I hit my nominal mileage goal on Wednesday, and will add to the total today. I've avoided injury, and built a decent 40-45 mile per week base. Haven't done any serious speed training, but I've run enough hills that I think I'm in good shape for Oak Tree on Sunday. I'm on track for where I want to be for running Wineglass at the end of September. I don't remember when was the last time I achieved all my goals in a month.
