No rematch; she didn't run the 5K this week, and I was just pacing her for the last part of her mile. Did my best to be supportive, telling her to give it what she had left for the final stretch; but I'm pretty sure she would have done fine without me.2 -

But you got to come in "first" after a fashion thanks to her. I know you were not actually in the race, but still2 -

When I walked outside this morning it felt like it was going to be a cooler run than the last few mornings. It was only 77F, but the humidity and the dew point made it feel pretty uncomfortable. But it was still a good run. I surpassed my goal for August. I did set it a little low since I had some stuff going on this month and knew I would miss a run or two. I'll have to think about my September goal.
I didn't see any skunks this morning. My biggest fear with skunks is that I will startle one and it will spray. And they can carry rabies. But typically if you see them at dusk or dawn they are just normal skunks and I have never seen one that I suspected of being rabid.

Month in Review:
Officially completed my last run on the month this morning. YIPPEE!
I can't believe I ran 81 miles this month and my goal was 60. I think I'm just going to go up another 10 miles though, from August's goal, and aim for 70 miles in September. I like to keep my expectations low, and you never know what might happen. I may have another 80 mile + month, but we'll see! I like to be surprised!
I'm feeling much better today, even with a lack of sleep. But I'm super happy I managed to continue on with my schedule through the rough spots this week. It was really dicey Monday and Tuesday. My stomach was having some sort of fit those two days and I don't know why, but it worked itself out. LOL.
Also, in other news! I'm signing up next week for the Los Angeles Marathon in March. I've been planning this for a while, and I think it's going to be good. I wanted to make sure that when I started my training, I had plenty of time to prepare for it. I think I've got a decent base going, and now I'll have roughly 6 and a half months to get ready for it. So, I'm excited! Also running for charity purposes, so it's really a bonus in general to cross the finish line.
Congrats to everyone who ran this month! Let's do it again friends! This is definitely the only place I really participate on MFP. So thank you to all you lovely people for the continuous support and motivation as we run from all walks of life! It's really inspiring.12 -

Morning everyone, Friday here so last day of the month. Congratulations to everyone who has achieved or close to achieving their goal. My goal was 130km but that got dropped early cause of this tendon strain in my ankle. I've managed 85km this month which I'm still really happy with.
Im kinda disappointed this morning in a weird way haha. I was getting ready to go out at 540am and I heard the skies open up. It started absolutely started pouring! So I got all syched up to actually run in the rain. I had @PastorVincent in my head telling me to get over myself. I did grab a cap as suggested (sorry can't remember who suggested it). Just as I opened the door miss 2 woke up so I put her back to bed. It only took a few minutes but the rain eased a bit. I headed out all ready to run in the rain, but it stopped! And never rained the whole run haha. So I prefer that but I was all ready to report I ran in the rain lol.
I feel like im back to form (mostly). I ran a good 5k, and got my 3rd best 5k time! So I no longer dislike my shoes, I think its just a mental state thing. The tendon is holding out as long as I don't push too fast, I could feel it a bit when I pushed the pace on my final km this morning so I eased up. Listening to the body and all that lol.13 -

HA! Well good on you for being ready to do it regardless!3 -
I wrote this this morning before spending much of the day talking to bankers about how my income to student loan ratio means I can't get a mortgage without a cosigner, only not the cosigner I married because reasons. Sigh. I'm glad I had a good run this morning. I'm going to take a nap now.
I got to run 5.08 miles today, ending off August with a really lovely tempo run in really lovely weather around a really lovely lake. Just a lovely morning all around. I think tempo runs might be my favorite kind of runs - I like having the clear goals, I like the challenge of ramping up steadily but not too quickly, and I like the feeling of running fast but not painfully so towards the end.
This wraps up a really phenomenal running month for me and kind of just a great month in general now that I look back at it. I ran a hair under 70 miles, signed up for a 10k and a half marathon, and set PRs all over the place: most miles in a month, most miles in a week, longest run, and fastest 5k pace and finishing time.
My one-mile PR from early July still stands, but I feel like I’m running much, much smarter than I was then, and I have a strong suspicion that I’ll beat that time in September as I continue weekly tempo runs and fartleks. I think I’m also enjoying my runs much more consistently than I was in July and that’s huge.
In other fitness goals, I got at least 60 minutes of stretching and strength mobility exercises in 3 weeks out of 4 and was only short 8 minutes that week. I did a lunge matrix before 9 of my last 11 runs (not counting speed-work done after lifting). I did less well with weight lifting in August, having two weeks where I only got one workout in, but I still feel good about where I am for now.
@eleanorhawkins: My brain still feels like walk breaks are cheating (or worse, failing!) sometimes too. I try and use that for motivation: if I need to walk during an easy run, then I probably haven't been taking it easy enough, so part of my mentality when I set out is "make sure to go so slow you won't need to walk!" I let myself walk during fartleks if I really, really need to, so I try and push myself hard enough that I "get" to walk a little. I'm still working out how to use walking as motivation during a tempo run, though - that just feels like failing.

9 miles this morning. I realized afterwards that I mistakenly add up the mileage I was supposed to do and missed a mile... duh. I guess I’ll add the extra mile to tomorrow’s run.
It was definitely hot this morning but the shady areas were better. Definitely needed more water.
Re socks, I like the no show socks. It helps with the tan lines. Thankfully I don’t have issues with them slipping down.
Re pedestrians and traffic... I hate most drivers- lol. I will say running has made me a more courteous driver especially towards other runners/bikers/walkers. I definitely try to make eye contact with drivers, but I’ve also just run across intersections when it’s my right ie I have the walk sign. It drives my husband crazy. I don’t run in the dark so that helps and I stay on sidewalks. I always wait my turn at intersections. Drivers turning right on red are the ones you have to watch for! Most of the time they never look to the right, just left to see if it’s clear to turn. Also, drivers turning left in an intersection.

I warmed up for a few minutes on the treadmill before circuit training and couldn't resist pushing the button on my Garmin to record it, even though I knew it was just a few minutes. I kept it paused while I did my workout just in case I wanted to add to it after. Which I did not *want* to do. But in the name of only one set of sweaty clothes, one shower, and one fewer stops in my day I dragged myself back to the treadmill after and finished up to get to 3 miles. I really should have done 4 according to plan and to get to a nice round 160 miles for the month, but I just could not summon the energy (plus really did need to get to work).
I am really freaking tired. The first week back in a new semester is always exhausting so I know it's both mental and physical. I also had to teach two classes in a row (just for) today, which I don't usually do without a break. I am struggling with the new schedule and where to fit all the running in. Hopefully I'll adapt to it all soon. But right now I'm very happy that tomorrow is a rest day and I don't have to run until Saturday morning.
It was a good month overall. I ran 3 races, had the highest weekly and monthly totals so far, and my longest run ever of 18 miles. Definitely will need to exceed that next month.10 -

People turning right on red without looking are The Worst (bikers call that the "right hook"). There's an intersection near me where the right turn is largely blind until you get right up to the corner, so people will often honk at people waiting to let pedestrians cross, or worse, go around them to the left. Maybe the thing that makes me the angriest is people turning right in front of busses that have stopped to let people out - a friend from college had two friends from high school who were killed by someone doing that.2 -

What do you think @LaDispute57 ? I have a coupon if you want to try it!
That is very tempting! I am always about inflicting unnecessary pain on myself... Unfortunately, that is a week after my 50k and also I will be Dayton, OH for my son's year end soccer tournament.2 -

Starting to look like if I do it, it will be alone. Which is true pretty much all of the races anyways. Ah well.3 -

5 miles on the Greenway, that's it for August since tomorrow is a lifting day. Here's hoping September weather is cooler and more pleasant! Congrats to everyone who made it through!
Although it was supposed to be raining, it didn't rain. Instead it was like running in a sauna. The heat was only in the 90s but the humidity was in the 90s too, and it seemed impossible to cool off. We were at about mile 4 and reconciled to a boring hot run when something exciting happened.
Anatomy of a Bicycle collision
I read somewhere once that it only takes an average of seven mistakes in a row to cause a disaster. Well... in this case I think that's about right.
1) We were hot and tired and cutting corners so we were in the middle of the trail on a blind curve, instead of to the right.
2) A young fella in racing gear on a very nice bike was going way too fast to be fully in control and had swung wide so he was also in the middle but going the opposite direction.
3) I spotted the bike pretty late and zigged back over to my side. Unbeknownst to me, behind me my husband had decided the bike was so far over that he was obviously intending to pass on the wrong side. My husband went left, I went right.
4) The cyclist saw us at the last minute, and swerved to avoid my husband, thus veering towards me. I freaked out like a squirrel in headlights and tried to go the other way. The cyclist saw me and also swapped directions.
5) Meanwhile, he had not tried to reduce his speed...
6) After a number of rapid attempts to pick a direction in which we both tried to go the same way, I decided the best thing to do was for at least one of us to stop completely and hope the other could sort it out. The cyclist came to the same conclusion at the same moment and jammed on his brakes.
At which point he ran into me and we slammed shoulder bones together.
Fortunately nobody was hurt, although I have a nice bruise, and we just clunked bodies, no one actually got hit by the bike. Dude yelled at me for not being far enough to the right, which confused me until later when my husband explained what was going on behind me. I apologized and kept my temper and didn't point out that there's a sign saying bikes have to keep speed moderate enough to be in control. And yield to pedestrians. Not that any cyclist has ever yielded to any pedestrian anywhere, but that is supposed to be the theory. Usually I manage to jump out of the way.

My husband uses a cheap one he got at Home Depot - I haven't tried a dedicated running one to compare the two. I would have expected the Home Depot one to bounce but it doesn't.3
