Attempted 5k this morning but I didn't get a lot of sleep last night and my lungs wouldn't cooperate grrr. So got 3k instead. At least I did that mush.
Question: I'm doing a 9.2k run Sunday. I wanted to get a longer run in this week as well. I was thinking of doing shorter runs (5-6k) Tues and Wed (Monday already) rest Thursday, 12k Friday, rest Sat then the 9 on Sunday. Sounds reasonable?7 -

The biopsy tested positive for melanoma. Next, a plastic surgeon will do an excision on the 26th.

Although not an expert, I have the unfortunate history of losing my only child to melanoma last year. The one piece of advice that I hammer on....is followup. I found his melanoma, I made arrangements to have it removed (and at that time there was no spread), and I made him promise to get routine followups after he moved back to the mainland.....he didn't. Even if there is no spread, make sure you are plugged in with an oncologist who is up to date on the newest treatments. Steve (my son) had a good response to the treatment-he died of a complication from one of the other meds he was placed on. Melanoma is now treatable even once it has spread. That didn't use to be the case.
Can you enjoy Hawaii still?-you bet. It is surprising to see how many people here use umbrellas not for rain, but for sun protection! When I swim/snorkel, I wear a 50spf long-sleeved shirt and ankle-length yoga pants. My snorkel buddy has a similar shirt but with a built in hood - we may not look like your typical Hawaiian beach-goers, but who cares! As @katharmonic says, plans for your trip will depend on what the staging workup shows.

I just need a safe place to vent and scream... Excuse me ahhhhhhhh
Vent away! We all go through spells where we get forced off track, just ride it out.
Remember eating is part of your training. My go to is always a bowl of soup. Last week i had to make some pumpkin curry chicken and indulge in its goodness. Last night it was veggetable chicken with kale and spinach. Find some goodness. The runs will come and life inevitably sorts out.
Thanks Elise. Always so supportive, I really appreciate it.
PS I've been watching the garmin circle Chicago last week, that was amusing. No updates for several days, hopefully it just went off the radar and will be here by Friday, I can't wait to use it!3 -

Not looking good for Boston wannabes with a 3 minute cushion or less. From the latest FB post by Boston Marathon:
"Due to field size limitations (same as recent years) and the amount of entries received in Week One (an increase from last year), we only will be able to accept a percentage of entries from Week Two."
The 2018 cut-off was 3:23. This implies a higher cut-off for 2019.0 -

While part of me wants to use this excuse to by new ones, my checkbook is disagreeing with me.
Oh my gosh me too. My longer runs are soaking my socks and sneakers... I’ve been letting them air dry out in the open (instead of the hall closet like normal) and using my older sneakers for shorter runs to give them more time to air out.2 -

That sounds reasonable for me; how does it compare to your recent total weekly running distance? If it's about the same or not more than 10% over the distance you ran last week, splitting it up this way seems reasonable. If you're going up by 15% of last week, it might be a bit aggressive. If it's 20% over last week, it's wildly optimistic.

I couldn’t bring myself to get up at 3am to watch this morning, but I’m going to stay up late this evening to watch the rebroadcast at 10pm.4 -

BQ for me is 3hrs 15min 00sec. That is like 45 mins faster than my PR on a certified course. So guessing I really have no worries about the cut off this year.5 -

Pshaw... I could do that easily... in car!
I used to have a car that couldn't even go as fast or as far as that guy did today lol.
@RunRachelleRun nothing I can say that will be of any help, but thinking of you, sending virtual hugs and good vibes and crossing fingers that it is a simple thing and you don't have to postpone your holiday.4 -

Too bad i couldn't leave the gps on and we could track it. Hope it finds you soon! Maybe its finally left the US. They guy at the shipping store wasnt sure it update once it left the US. Although thought it pick it up in the port.0 -
@RunRachelleRun - hugs for the diagnosis, but also glad it was caught. No medical advice to give you - but as for your trip - my gut feeling is that unless the timing interferes with your treatment, you'd regret canceling.
I'm feeling good about my upcoming races. Did some intervals this morning. Tomorrow I plan on 10 miles. Times have been at or better than I'm hoping for so I'm pretty happy about it all.
June goal - 44/44
July goal - 52/52
August goal - 55/57 miles
Sept goal - 38/60 miles
Sept. 30 - Wineglass Half Marathon; Corning, NY
October 7 - Viking Dash Half Marathon; Toledo, OH

I have a non-running question. I found an affordable biking trip to Cuba this winter. My husband says “go” but he’s freaking out with worry about safety issues and bringing up every kind of improbable scenario. So have any of you travelled to Cuba? As an American am I being naive thinking I won’t have any problems? I would be a solo traveler but with a group of 4 to 7 other people. This was something I’ve wanted to do but now he has me questioning my sanity. Any advice is welcome.0

Thanks, if you ignore last week because of illness then its about what I am doing, so given I had most of last week off then I should be good.1 -

Thanks for all the support, everyone. I really appreciate it!
@elise I hope you hear something soon. Maybe you should pester them! I wish I had asked for the pathology report. I am going to try to get a copy on Monday. My gp seemed upset to tell me and didn’t give me any other info than the biopsy was positive for melanoma, and I would need to have a large excision done by a plastic surgeon for removal and staging. I got a call within an hour of seeing her with the date and time of surgery. I don’t know if the speedy surgery is because of something found in the first biopsy or standard treatment. Things usually move slower up here in Canada with our universal healthcare.
@katharmonic thank you. I remember you lost your sister. I appreciate the kind words and insight. Hugs to you.
@HonuNui I am so sorry about your son. Hugs to you too. Thank you for the advice and information. That is comforting as we had planned to do a lot of activities, including snorkelling, and I was wondering if would be possible, given my back would be facing the sun ... and water had been involved in the worst of my burns as a child. It is a big trip for us, and one we have been looking forward to. I would like to go if it is at all possible. As @biketheworld suggested, I would regret it if I cancelled the trip. I will get those spf clothes.6 -

Today's notes – As things worked out, the convenient time to run today was afternoon. That works out well on Sundays in the winter; in the summer, there can be weather challenges. Today, it was 88º F (31º C), sunny, and I didn't want to look at the dew point. It felt like summer.
My original thought for today was run an easy 60 minutes. Bearing in mind the weather and Coach's advice to back off when it's hot and humid, I decided from the start to just run a pleasant, easy 10K. For the first mile, it seemed like the heat didn't matter to my heart rate. By 2 miles, the HR had caught up to where it would be if I'd been running an 8 pace from the start of the run. By 5 miles, I was seeing a definite cardiac creep. I expect I would have become miserable shortly after running an hour; but I didn't run an hour.
Got to 6 miles, and thought about pushing for a fast finish. That thought lasted about 3 steps, then I just ran. However much I accelerate unconsciously because I'm close to home would have to be enough.
Got home, did my stretching in the shade, and went through my post-run routine. Felt much better for having got out there, even though it was hard to get out the door and get started. Just had to remind myself, what happens if it's 88º and sunny at gun time? They run the race anyway.

I stayed up too late last night and did not really want to get up this morning, but I did want to run so I got up anyway. It was already hot and still humid so I was not expecting a great run. But I had a great run today. I went 8.2 miles. I was able to keep my pace under 11 min/mile. I kept all of my miles under 11 except mile 7 and 8. Mile 8 was particularly slow as I was starting to drag by then, but overall I felt great. I beat my 10K PR from last Sunday. I love runs like that. I'm on track for my September goal and I feel really good about my running lately.
My legs have been kind of tired and sore since though. I did a little yoga stretching and rolled my legs with a massage stick. I don't think it is the same brand as the one in the video that @ContraryMaryMary shared, but it is the same thing. I really like it. It is much easier than foam rolling for me.
@zdyb23456 20 miles on a treadmill = very impressive!
@eleanorhawkins I sometimes zone out listening to music too and I have missed some of my Zombies Run episode before. I go to a website called Runner Five, Report. It is ztranscripts.tumblr.com They post transcripts of the missions if you miss one.
@AlphaHowls Great HM! Awesome pace. And an age group award. Way to go!
@rheddmobile Great race report! Awesome times for you and your husband! I love the stroller lady story. And your pictures are great. What a wonderful transformation!
@RunRachelleRun I'm so sorry about your diagnosis. I pray that they get everything when they do the excision. I would not cancel the trip unless the doctor advises you to.
I have a question. Has anyone had trouble with the band on their Garmim FR35? Mine broke. I tried to order a replacement on Amazon but it wasn't the right size. The Garmin site says there are no user replacement bands. I fixed it with super glue and so far so good. Just wondered if anyone else had had that issue and if you had any better solutions.
2018 races:
5/19/18: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - 2:43:59.7. - 2nd place AG

@RunRachelleRun I'm so sorry you've had that diagnosis and I'll be keeping you in my thoughts.
@biketheworld As a Canadian, we go to Cuba all the time. I mean, I've never been but my parents go 2-3 times a year and friends of theirs seem to go every 6-8 weeks! I think as long as you stick to touristy areas you will be pretty safe. My parents and their friends even leave the resort's to visit peoples' homes as they've made friends over the years.2 -

We have universal health care in NZ as well and they move that fast here for anything melanoma. My Nana had a melanoma on her hand and was seen within a few days for excision it had not spread or anything. I think Melanoma gets people moving fast.

I don't know specifically about the 35, but the strap on my 630 broke.
I ordered a replacement online, making sure it came with the tool I need to remove and replace the band. Then I put the broken band together with duct tape and went out for my Saturday run. The run was based out of a running store, and they didn't have any replacement 630 bands. But the guy said he had something that might work; for 4 times what I paid online, he replaced the band with one that works better than the original. I later asked, and he sold me a band for a 735. It was worth it, because I didn't have to find out whether the duct tape would be good enough on a 12 mile run.
So . . . it wouldn't cost you anything to haul the 35 into a running store and ask them if it can take a band from other models of Garmin. Maybe they can replace it for you and maybe you can learn enough to get a band cheaper online and replace it yourself.3 -

I was so tired this morning and was happy when my friend bailed on me for a morning run. I lounged around and took Stella for a leisurely walk, which helped my legs stretch out a bit. It was hot and humid so I thought maybe if I waited until evening it might be better. Not so much! At least it was a shady route.
I got in my longest run so far at 19 miles, and a total of 45 miles this week, which is the highest weekly total I've done. That might be the highest weekly total I get to with 6 weeks to marathon. I am feeling really tired, but a little better mentally about where I'm at with training.
A couple of the guys in our marathon group did the Air Force Marathon yesterday in Dayton OH and the heat was bad enough for them to black flag the race - but they were far enough along they were allowed to finish. Sounds like it was pretty brutal as the sun came out and there was no shade at all. They had to walk a lot, as did everyone left on the course from the sounds of it, they said it looked like a mob of zombies out there. These are pretty experienced marathoners and I feel bad they had such tough conditions as I know they trained really hard.7 -
@RunRachelleRun So sorry to hear about your diagnosis. It sounds like you caught it early, so will hopefully be okay. I agree with Pastor Vincent - don't cancel your plans unless your doctor advises you to. If you are like me, and want to be on the safe side, can you buy the flight insurance which allows you to change your flights for free if something does happen? I usually do that when I fly. You never know what might happen. Sending lots of positive thoughts and vibes your way. Oh, I volunteer with the American Cancer Society. You can call them anytime for questions you may have about melanoma, sun safety after a diagnosis, or any other concerns you may have. They are there 24/7, 365 days a year.4
-
Fairly tired and beat up so missed some posts, anyone who's hurt- sending you a virtual band-aid, to all those who had runs/races or new PB's for distance, time or elevation .
9.5 km Don't Get Lost In The Woods - Trail Race at a Cross Country Ski Club - last week after the snowfall they actually had people ( hardcore keener's ) out on the trails skiing. Yea that's how much white stuff they received last week. The week before they had a Grizzly Bear traveling through feasting on all the Fall Berries and mushrooms. Sounds like a perfect place for a race.
Tough. The toughest event of the year for me.
I was tired from all the Volunteer work at the Miserable Miles Obstacle Course Race yesterday ( 9 heats x 20 = long busy day ) plus 2.5 hr drive to get to the event this morning = 6am wakeup, add in the wet sand dune trails, swamp sections so I struggled right from the start. Still got it done. 10 minutes off my average time for this event. Last week I had a PB on the Miserable Miles course, this week on the opposite end of the time scale - that's running for you.
They had a few minor course changes due to the wet swampy conditions so it was just a little short this year. One of the bad sections they back filled with Wood Chips from the local Pulp & Paper Mill. Actually made a nice surface to run on. Initially I thought it would just collapse away from you but the chips actually seemed to lock together with the weight of your body. I can feel my left ankle is tender but I have no idea where I stumbled/twisted it.
It was a Trail Run in the Trees so that's always enjoyable even if it was raining and the occasional Snow Flake if you looked hard.
Now to go have a nap.11 -
@quilteryoyo I did not buy the flight cancellation insurance. But I can get a partial credit voucher good for a year and is transferable, so I could potentially sell it. I can get a full refund on the accommodation until the first week of October, which is why I was feeling uncertain. If I wait too long to cancel, we will be out about 2500.
@avidkeo Thanks for that info. It would be great if is is standard here too.1 -
@juliet3455 Good work knocking out that race in tough conditions!1

I had a stressful couple of weeks; which affected my sleep. I skipped my run on Thursday. Managed to get back to it today.
So, I had an itch on my mid-back that felt like a scab and stung in the shower. I couldn’t get a good look at it and forgot about it for a day or two. We started swimming lessons last week, when I remembered to ask my husband to take a look. Once he saw it, he told me it was a mole that has changed, and I should definitely go get it checked. I couldn’t get in to see my doctor for a week and called a dermatologist instead. She suggested I go to a walk-in clinic to get a referral sent to them.
The walk-in doc immediately said, “Let’s do a biopsy; I hate paperwork.” I waited anxiously for ten days, knowing it likely wasn’t good that the results were taking so long.
The biopsy tested positive for melanoma. Next, a plastic surgeon will do an excision on the 26th.
I am trying to stay positive and hope it was caught early. Thank goodness for that walk-in doc getting things going so quickly.
And, we have a family vacation planned to Hawaii in December that I have no idea what to do about. I have until early next month to cancel our accommodations and receive a refund. I ruined our last planned family vacation in 2014 by getting a heart virus literally the day before we were to leave. My son is 21 and this was to be our second family holiday. Do I hope for the best and leave it? Can I enjoy a sunny destination with plenty of sunscreen and clothing? Do I play it safe? I don't know who to ask. I don't know how long it will be until I get to see a dermatologist.
Anyway, thanks for listening. I don't have any extended family or parents to tell, so I took advantage of you all as a captive audience. I could use whatever healing energy and positive thoughts or advice/experience you can send my way.
I had one come back positive (dysplastic nevi) on my thigh that was burned when i was a kid on a dirt bike. I never went through with the surgery, only the removal. I asked for my pathology report to take to a second doc and havent hear anything. Its been months. @HonuNui is probably our melanoma guru.
We're going to Hawaii in January 4-11. Maybe we could catch each other if you reschedule? I think you'd be okay with sunscreen, but im no authority. Hope ypur family trip isnt cancelled and the melanoma is easily treated.
@RunRachelleRun - I was going to suggest @HonuNui as well but also in addition to sunscreen I would suggest a UV protective shirt. Both my doctor and dermatologist have recommended them and I am just trying to find some thin and cool enough to run in. {{hugs!}}
ETA - I saw the responses late but I agree with the others - don't cancel your vacation! If you need reinforcement I would contact the surgeons office and ask what they think from the perspective of your surgery and normal recovery times and any other treatment you might need.5
