WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR SEPTEMBER 2018

Heather "fidgety sceptic" should be my username, lol. I am waking up very early (4 a.m.) with a focus to write in my journal and read without interruption. I really think I should do what you did, calm myself and go back to sleep but right now, the early work is something I look forward to. I will have to readjust though, it bugs my DH that I fall asleep so early at night, less time to talk with each other, he feels jealous.
Rori I laughed at your description of certain workout videos that include, "a posse of supermodels in the background" and my mind went to all of us, "a Posse of 50+ strong women working out together."
Mary feeling for you about Shep, you made the decision for him to stay because it is his happy place to be, yes?
The scale is moving in the right direction for both DH and myself, we are on the same page lately, how nice is that?

I am awake and dressed...having my tea.. and it will be a rainy day today.. another crappy sleep last night...
I signed the contract to sell my dad's house..now my brother has to sign.. this has been emotional roller coaster for both of us,,, especially for him as he done the brunt of most of the heavy work..
Michelle~ I probably should have buried him right away... but it was January and we will be burying him the day after what would have been his 90th birthday... I will spend the 4th relaxing, getting my hair done and then going down to the casino and enjoy the concert, the pool and the hot tub...get myself a bite to eat and listen to Tony... get up and come home and bury my dad... this will be closure for my brother and I... but wow is it hard...6 -
Michele - the griddle sits on the top of the continuous grate, and comes with it as an extra, it's not built-in.
Heather - I convinced myself to go back to sleep on my side of the world at about the same time--doesn't always work, but when it does, I'm always proud of myself! Slept for 6 hours 41 minutes, all told (my Fitbit told me so). My Fitbit is set to give me a star when I sleep for 7 hours, and I always have hope. Actually heard my husband's alarm go off at 5 a.m. Unusual.
Editing, since I still have a few minutes: I only drank one 12-ounce cup of coffee yesterday, instead of my usual two. Hmmm... think there's a connection with the sleeping? Might try it again today and see if I sleep well again tonight. While giving up coffee completely is not in my stars in the near future (I tried for six months, it was UGLY), perhaps simply cutting back could work?
Barbie - Glad the news was good! And yes, sometimes, it's just the genes you're born with. My ex had never smoked, quit drinking when he was in his 20s, was physically fit, ate fairly well, and still had a heart attack at 47. Ran in his family. My family's genetic wild cards are for weight, heart issues, and joint problems, but osteoporosis isn't in the hand we've been dealt (so far). Or cancer, oddly enough. And fingers crossed it stays that way.
Rori - thank you for the link! Will be trying it out this morning.
Allie - enjoy your down time, and I'm glad you'll have something resembling closure for your dad. It's been a long year for you, but you're still standing. Proud of you!
Had to scramble out and get my driver's license re-made yesterday--went to mail a package and opened my wallet, and the license wasn't there. Luckily, they didn't check it, so I was able to mail the package. Last time I remember seeing it was at TSA in El Paso. Will have to call them today to see what it is they do with them if they're recovered. Just hoping my license isn't out there somewhere in the hands of a bad guy.
It wasn't that big a deal. I took my passport down to the license office and walked out 20 minutes later with a new picture with current hair color (a sort of caramel brown). Will have to get it re-made again when we move and change addresses, but will get it done at that point with the "enhanced" license, also known as REAL ID. Was helpful flying in and out of North Carolina, where it wasn't hard to obtain. Harder here, as you have to have TWO utility bills, which of course, I get electronically. Will probably also get the TSA Pre-Check program done. It's $85 for five years, and it will make sense to do it after we move, so the address won't change during those five years. It's all kind of a pain in the buttinsky, but hey, there are worse things.
Time to get on with my day...
Love y'all!

Good morning ladies! I got a full eight hours of sleep last night! Woo-hoo! That is my norm; but due to having Trentin here late nights this past weekend, I haven't had that since Friday. Amazing how you can feel that difference!
Mary-Sending you lots of love as you travel back to AZ without Shep. But he does look happy with that big stick, and like you said, he will have lots of other animals and people to play with and love him while he is there. You are a good fur mama!
Barbie- so glad the outcome of your visit was a good one! I did have a giggle as I imagined the doctor gave you instructions of exercises that you have been doing, for years! I imagined a big "inner" eye roll from you. Perhaps the exercises that you have been doing and the care you have been taking of yourself has held off the bone loss issues for a few years?! Just imagine what state you would most likely be in had you NOT been taking care of yourself! You are a ROCKSTAR! So happy that one pill per week will get you back to doing the things you love and hopefully allow you to continue doing those things for many years!
Karen VA- LOL! Many of those little gifs look a LOT like a day in my house! Am I that annoying, that I seem to ramble on and on about my daycare? lol I could paint a picture of all of the bad stuff... Remember that movie FAther of the Bride 2? When Nina finds out she is pregnant (the mother of the bride) and she and George (the father of the bride) are in the car on the way home from the doctor??? All of the family scenes on Nina's side of the road are happy family scenes and all of the scenes on George's side of the road are tantruming children? lol I have alot of those moments!
Lanette- IF I get sick with the flu (vomiting, or too sick to deal with kids) I just give the parents as much notice as possible. Most of them have back up (grandparents or neighbors) who can help at these times. I usually work through bad colds, sore throats, etc. I haven't had to take more than a couple of days off for illness in many years. I hesitate to say this because it almost seems like I am cursing myself; but I haven't been sick enough to miss work in probably about five years.
Heather- You always seem to find the funniest (perhaps a little snarky or sarcastic?) podcasts, books, exercise videos! I haven't read Dan Harris's stuff yet, maybe I should look them up.
Allie- Hope you are feeling better! Hugs!
Things other than work going on in my life: Ugh! I had a "bad mommy" moment yesterday with my daughter, Lauren. As you know, she is miles (count about 1,200 miles) away in Texas. Well, she hasn't been feeling well, and of course decided that I would be the best person to diagnose her (from thousands of miles away). I told her it was probably due to allergies. Thank God she ignored me and went into the doc office. She had a double ear infection! smh Ugh! Awful how I can still feel like a bad mom when my daughter is almost 30!
The other thing going on in my life, is my youngest son, Colin, has applied to the Peace Corps! Apparently he has been thinking about it for a few months now, and decided that since he is not in a relationship and kind of in an odd place career wise (does he quit work and get his degree? or just go full force into the management program at work and forget about his degree?) this would be a good time to volunteer and do some good someplace in the world. I agree. He will be 25 by the end of this year, and I think this (if his application is accepted) would be a good way to perhaps give him some perspective and purpose in life. Do any of you (or your children) have experience with the Peace Corps?
Well, I better fly. Kids arriving early today. ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)

KJ - I am a natural sceptic and hate anything woo woo. But I do take on board stuff that has a scientific basis. I love an improving book. If it has a sense of humour then all the better.
Enjoyed yoga this morning. Now to cycle off a few more calories. Must write a few words of the second volume of my autobiography today. I've had a few days off.

So ... I'm planning to cut my hair short soon. Up to waist length. I haven't had it cut in about 18 months ... was going to get it done about the time my husband had his accident, but then his accident distracted me. And a lot of my hair fell out then ... it's really thin now. I'm hoping cutting it will help thicken it up again.
Meanwhile, I thought I'd get a few photos of it long ...

A few years ago, Heather recommended "The Happiness Project" by Gretchen Rubin. I read it and it added so much to my life including helping me write my own "Happiness Commandments" like "Be Barbie" and "Act the way you want to feel". I read Gretchen's other books and listened to her weekly podcast from the beginning of the series. It was on the podcast that I learned about Dan Harris and his book "10% Happier". So Heather got me on the path that ultimately led to her finding another book that has been useful.
When I can't sleep, I start with focusing on my breath like I do for meditation. If that doesn't work after 10-15 minutes, I turn on the light and read for awhile or get my phone and turn on a podcast that works like having your mom read a story til you fall asleep. Some nights I sleep great and other nights I sleep poorly. It seems to all even out.
I took the Fosamax for the first time this morning. As soon as I took it, I started the stopwatch on my phone and found that it was 35 minutes by the time I dressed, walked and fed the dogs and had my breakfast and morning pills ready to consume. That is my usual morning plan so the requirement of waiting 30 minutes after taking the pill will be easy.
Allie, glad to hear things are getting settled for you.

Barbie, NYKaren and Kelly - thanks! He is at a place where he is extremely happy! I will be seeing him next week and see how hard he tries to go home with me, that is if he does try.
We winterized the Minnesota RV at the resort. We have a couple of maintenance issues to do at our rental property. Then we will head up so John can start farming
Have a great day everyone!

Rita - LOVE your pictures!
And I... got a four-day trip canceled mid-month, so now there are only two left to go--one where I leave Sunday and come back Wednesday, and one last full-week trip at end of month. Actually makes it possible that we might be able to clear out of the rental house by end of month... and let them start showing it. Fingers crossed!
And... that would be ME, doing the happy dance of joy...

Mary: Thanks for your kind words.
Barbie: It sounds like you have an excellent plan for your bone health. Yay!!!
Heather: Meditation for Fidgety Sceptics looks like a great book to pass along to the right person as a birthday or Christmas present.
Lisa: I can imagine cutting down my coffee intake, but eliminating it is not a likely choice for me. I like it, for one thing, and I don’t like caffeine withdrawal headaches for another. I can cut down on the number of cups I drink with no real worries, and do so when necessary.
Machlka: Your hair is lovely and waist length will be a good choice. I had mine cut today, and it is a short shag. I like it this way and it is very easy to care for.
Rita: That is a lovely photo of Bottomless Lake. Thanks for sharing.
We have our annual Homeowners Association meeting this coming weekend. I’m the secretary and will take notes. I’m not trained in shorthand or other speed writing, so I’ll do the best I can. It appears that our numbers will be low. Some of our residents are on vacation and others are snowbirds. One couple of snowbirds have already headed south.

Does anybody know anything about property assessment fees? They put in a new sewer pipe for our street. Our property is being charged 1/6 of the total amount. Which really seems out of line if it is divided up for all properties on both sides of the street and adjoining properties at the intersection if it costs so much per foot. It should be more like 1/16. They also put two access sewer lines in when we only need one. It says that if we object to this we can't take it to district court unless we have a written or oral objection signed by us and filed with the municipal clerk prior to the hearing which is next Monday. The hearing for approval of the assessment is voted on by the city Council of our town how can that be fair? They make an improvement for maintenance to our sewer system, they do it without informing us that they are going to do it, then after completion of the project they charge us for the improvement and they're the ones who vote on approving the charge to us. So what rights do we have? They're even charging us 3% interest on the whole amount then 3% every year on unpaid amount for 15 years and our share is over $20,000!
Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi friends. DH has had 2 deaths in one week so I am heading to Oklahoma for the funeral of his dear cousin whom he lived with. I'm leaving tomorrow and won't be back on here until Saturday or Sunday. They are really out in the boonies with sketchy internet! Take care, Meg7

Mary, I wish I had information... I don't, but have great sympathy.
Meg... Traveling grace, and great sympathy.

Mary - get a copy of the city code, it should be delineated in there, including the interest unless superseded by an updated ordinance. You can often find the code by going onto the city's webpage, they should have a link to code and ordinances - you'll probably find it under their public works or public services section.
Some of these city codes are quite old.
The fact that it serves 16 properties and not 6 should be brought to their attention. And why now... was the old system leaking or causing problems so complete replacement was the only recourse? And if so, did anyone apply for grants from State ecology or similar to help pay for it? Poor towns often qualify for them.
Good luck. Kind of a shocker, that's for sure. HUGS!
Lanette
PS - you might want to call neighboring cities of similar size and ask them how they handle infrastructure replacement. Out here in WA state, at least in our county, the cities should have a replacement fund for this - the city owns it to the customer's hookup, unless it's a brand new development then the developer kicks in a lot of $$. So if sections of the pipes have to be replaced, that cost is borne by ALL customers in the system and part of the monthly sewer rate is dedicated to this fund. Your state might have very different laws and ways of handling things.0 -
Lanette- thanks for the information! I will definitely look into that and ask those questions. We also believe they have the length of our property wrong. I'm going to have a lot of investigating to do on Monday! Maybe I can go Thursday but it is a six hour round-trip drive…

Mary when they did some work on a street over from us one of our neighbor was a vet and their assessment was much less. We were told their will be an assessment for the oiling and gravel they just did on our street. We have have yet to get the assessment. I hope it goes well for you on Monday.

Did the Biggest Lower Last Chance Workout. The plan for tomorrow since we have the Newcomer board meeting is to do the Fit In 10 Body Transformation DVD
Well, I called the doctor’s office because I had my bone density scan the other day. The result is that he said there isn’t any change from last year. Guess this means that I am osteoporatic. Which is a change from my osteoporosis.
Lisa – I’m glad for you that the griddle is just an extra. There will be times when you’ll want the other burners. I remember in our second house I had the 4 burners and a griddle. Honestly, and this is just me, I never used the griddle.
Lisa – doing a happy dance for you!
Supposed to go to AC Moore tonight for their needle night. I have a pattern that I want someone to look at. I’m also wondering if the scarf I made for Colby is long enough so I may need help ending it. Update: I went, got a few things, used my 55% off coupon. Really, you're only supposed to use it once a day, but I used it once when I got there and then once right before I left. Finished the scarf I made for Colby and got one of the skeins of yarn for the hooded scarf for Jess.
Katla – I honestly can’t remember the last time we had a homeowner’s association meeting. We are so loose….lol
Meg – safe travels! That is so nice of you to go to the funeral
Mary – good luck to you!

Having lunch out today in our local village / town. I haven't taken my friend there yet, so I hope she likes the menu. I like the salads there, but she usually wants a main meal as she doesn't want to have to cook in the evening.
My cleaner will be letting herself in. I've tidied up (!) so could bring my friend back for coffee.
Weather glorious again.
I'm resigning myself to not moving. I just want to know one way or another. We need to make plans for the future, but at the moment I can't even stock the freezer.
Lots of love, Heather UK xxxxxxx4 -
On the one hand ...
I'm so tired I nearly fell asleep standing up & having my jaw X-rayed. I was told to relax for 20 secs ... and I was almost out!
And then I did fall asleep on the bus home again.
On the other hand ...
Next weekend (Oct 7) ... Daylight Savings Time starts!! 💖😁 WooHoo!!! 😍💖
Wish we could keep DST year round!!

Mary So glad you can get a "Shep Fix" if you need one. It's painful to part with pets, even if it isn't permanent, and even if the pet is in a good situation. ((Hugs)). Sounds like Lanette has some good advice for you on the sewer assessment. We had to pay a good chunk of money for a new natural gas line from the street to the house once. I will admit it was stressful, but it's over now, and we don't have to deal with Columbia Gas any more except to pay gas bills.
Lisa Any coffee affects my sleep, even if I just have it in the morning. I drink it anyway. I should probably eliminate it. I have done so in the past and have been rewarded with better quality sleep. It's hard for me to give it up entirely and forever. Not impossible, but I do like coffee, and I love tea. By the way, how is your leg? All healed up? Exciting times with your house. It's becoming a butterfly!
Kelly The opposite of annoying! I live for your posts and updates on the kids and Joaquin. I really enjoy imagining what it must be like in your busy world full of little people.
Katla Sounds like Arrow is a spirited animal. I admire you for taking up horseback riding as an adult. I rode all through my youth (western) but not since then.
Meg Safe travels.
Rita Pretty sunset. Thanks for posting.

Update on homeschooled grandson. He had another LENS treatment Monday, but, in contrast to last week, he was pretty focused & happy yesterday. For the first time since we started home school, he "raised his hand" and was "called on" in a live class. He used his microphone, and the Math teacher liked his answer! He had to define what an integer is. And to top it off, in Civics, as a warm-up exercise, the students were asked to explain in their own words what Rule of Law, Representative Government, and Consent of the Governed mean. He is in a class of about 75 students. She chose 2 of his answers as good examples and posted them on the white board! This is a complete turnaround for a kid who has been very resistant to actively participating in the classroom in any way that would draw attention to him. I don't know what happened. It was completely unprompted, too. A couple of weeks ago, I suggested that he participate because it affects his grade, but he was so adamantly opposed that I dropped it. Now this! I am doing a major happy dance.
On the down side, Monday's start was tense because my son uninstalled & reinstalled a bunch of stuff on my grandson's computer over the weekend, and didn't fix the firewall for the websites we needed. We went through this exact same scenario the very first day of school. My son is a very intelligent, computer-savvy person. When it happened 3 weeks ago, I was pi$$ed, but gave him the benefit of the doubt ("...maybe he forgot that he would have to give permission for the websites we needed"), but Monday - there is no excuse. The most generous conclusion I can come up with is that he is (unconsciously) being passive aggressive towards my grandson, my daughter-in-law, and me. We are the 3 that are affected by scrambling around at the last minute to get firewalls down before a live class session, and it really upsets my grandson. If it happens again I will call him out. It isn't likely to be pretty.

Karen in VA - Oh my, am doing the happy dance with you--what a lovely turnaround for your grandson, and proof that he's processing what you're asking, even if his immediate reaction is negative. Such great steps to make! It also does sound as if your son's buried anger at the situation may be obscuring his ability to make those judgments consciously. Well worth waiting until you're not angry to face him with it. As my old writing teacher used to say, "twice is a coincidence, three times is a trend."
Heather - As you may have noticed, uncertainty is my biggest bug-a-boo, but I've dealt with it so much, I'm learning not to put my life on pause for a hoped-for outcome. For me, that means going on with life as if whatever it is I'm hoping for won't happen. If it does, then it does, and you can cancel plans made, take your frozen stuff with you, or do a marathon cooking session, whatever is necessary. Had it come about immediately, you would have done that stuff anyway... As John Lennon said, "Life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans." And my superstitious nature also dictates that, if I pay no attention to it, it will happen--and if I focus on it, I will jinx it. That's how I met Corey - when I wasn't looking for love...
I'm mulling over the definition of "normal" this morning, and will probably write about it in the personal blog. Pretty sure I wouldn't recognize it if it bit me on the *kitten*..
Love y'all,
