Hi all!
Awake at 5 am today. But that's 6 hours sleep, so can't complain. I did a bit of mindful breathing, but then decided to talk to you.
I'm going to tackle the cupboard full of plastic containers that I use for freezing stuff. I've already thrown away a few , but more needs to be done. I can never find the right lids! I might get rid of quite a lot of it and just treat myself to nice new ones when I get there. The decluttering book suggests you store them stacked with their lids ON.
Also a couple of utility room drawers. I've generally ignored the utility room and it's become my "out of sight, out of mind" place. Some stuff I've hardly looked at since we moved in 8 years ago.
I will also be throwing away some very outdated packets of different kinds of flour. Buckwheat anyone? I have 6 lbs of the stuff. That's the trouble with being a cook. But it HAS to go.
One good thing about the new place is I don't have to store so much stuff, or freeze so much, as the shops are just around the corner. We will have to buy a new freezer as we are leaving ours for the new people. It is too big and the garage doesn't have sockets. I think our life style will change , but I hope I don't slip into bad habits.
One temptation will be Marrocco's, an ice cream and seafood pasta place on the seafront. The ice cream is home made, the pasta is home made, served with all kinds of yummy fishy stuff. It is about 20 mins walk away. Oooops!
Another temptation is Fatto a Mano (Hand Made) a pizza place in Hove. My son regularly goes there with the kids as kids eat free. It is a sourdough, wood fired place, just like in Naples.
Seeing as I am normally a lower carb kind of gal, I hope I'm not lead astray too often. The best gastro pub in the south is 15 mins walk away, but a bit expensive for a quick bite.
I am going to have to do a LOT of running. Going to have to buy those bikes pretty quick.

Karen in VA - Im so sorry you lost little Farley! I'm glad you were able to be with him through the last moments, though. Years ago veterinary offices didn't want you there. I'm glad that's changed.
Lisa in AR - your living room is welcoming and lovely! You must be so happy it's gone quickly!
I took one of my grandsons home to Whidbey Island today. I packed hard boiled eggs, my protein drink, and some carrots to take with me.
However, by the time I got home I was quite hungry, and thought I'd left plenty of room in my diary for dinner. When mY SIL brought it over it was a garlic breadstick, a rather large serving of Beef Stroganoff Hamburger Helper, and what they thought would be healthy cauliflower veggie tots. They're not. They're as bad as potato ones because of the breading and sodium. I'm not too far over, and certainly met my protein goal.
Happy weekend! I'm finally caught up now so the giant posts will hopefully slim down.

Karen so sad to hear about Farley but nice for him that you were with him
Lisa home looks so cumfy and cosy
Lanette you will love Decluttering at the Speed of Life
Hugs to all who need them
I've been so good this week that I've lost 3 lbs need to keep it up. Danger today is the wine I'll drink while on our Sunday 'date' I allow for the wine but tend to get the munchies when I get home.
Son has just messaged to try to set up a date for Christmas meal in Dec before we go to Spain on 18th for nearly 4 weeks. As some of you know we do this every year. I have to start thinking about cards and pressies.
Learning some new skills this week, I had to buy a new printer which is great, set it up wirelessly so can print from phone and ipad, but can't print from my old imac computer as there is no software. Tried to workout how to print my address labels for cards (I hate writing them) rang DD who is a whizz with computer stuff. She found an app for phone and ipad and told me to send copies of file by email to myself and print from there. Brilliant, worked a treat. She is so clever.
Need to get my workout done (try to compensate for the wine)
Have a lovely Sunday

trucker743 wrote: »About memory, my Dr says if you're trying to remember a word but can't recall it that's pretty normal, but if you've lost "key" and blurt out, say, "book", there might be a problem.
Precisely what my husband does since the accident.
But he'll usually get something in the ballpark.
So a treadmill was the "walking board", a kettle was the "water heater", and a few times he mentioned putting "an apple" in his coffee rather than sugar (an apple is edible and somewhat sweet, right?).
The other day we were in Bunnings looking for fertiliser and he pointed at one bag and said, "I like that one with the donkey on it." ... it was a rooster. He did catch himself a moment later and knew "donkey" was wrong, but couldn't get what it was.
Today he was talking about the thing at an angle in the front of the van ... it took me a second, and then I got "gauge". I've become pretty good at guessing!
But that's what his particular brain injury has done ... it damaged the left temporal lobe which is the speech centre of the brain.
Fortunately, he is getting better. Used to be he'd lose words in just about every sentence, now it's about every 5 sentences or so. I've noticed he talks a lot slower and I'm pretty sure the reason for that is to give himself time to think of the words or to devise a way to get around the missing word.

Lisa - Love your comfy living room. You look very settled!
This is a pic of one of the things we will miss when we move. The view from our bedroom window. This morning the light on the clearing mist was so lovely.

Machka It's amazing how well your husband is doing, but it doesn't erase the heartache of what has changed.
The specific examples of his speech difficulties make for a poignant glimpse into his world (and yours). His brain recircuiting project is painstakingly slow, but ongoing nonetheless. He is an amazing man. And you are an amazing woman. (((Hugs)))

MACHKA your hubs is doing so well, makes us remember what wonderful creatures humans are and if we look after our bodies we are better able to cope with trauma.
HEATHER love the view and know you will miss it. I love to visit the countryside but am a city girl and love all the convenience of buses and shops etc We have numerous museums, 2 cathedrals, lots of parks and of course our magnificent waterfront as well as access to beaches each side of the river. All within reach in about 40 mins and buses and local trains free with our wonderful bus passes.
I know some of you have experience of UTIs I have been taking antibiotics as prophylactic for a number of years. Recently I saw consultant urologist and she said they don't recommend antibiotics any more but advised that I take a supplement called D-Mannose and a probiotic every day. Have to buy these as not on prescription, there is something else on prescription here called Hiprex, it is antibacterial not antibiotic. So far so good, glad to be off antibiotics.

Machka - I think you were here more than a year and a half ago when my husband shattered his wrist in a workplace accident. I mentioned at some point during his recovery that it was like being married to the injury, rather than the husband, as it was the focus of every conversation, every interaction, for six months. I resented that injury so much for taking my husband away from me, and the changes I saw in him during that time, honestly (not that I told him that). Made me feel incredibly selfish and lacking in both understanding and any form of long-term sympathy. I am not a patient person, rather the opposite, and as a caretaker, I'm closer to Nurse Ratched, I'm thinking.
But yesterday, I watched him reach down and take the weight of a massive chest-of-drawers with that same hand to carry it in the house, and it made me realize once again how fortunate we both truly were. I think of you often, and hope you know how much I admire and respect you, and Rori as well. You are both incredibly strong women, given a seemingly impossible labor of love, and you both accomplish it with grace and enviable patience. You both make me want to be a better person.
Back up at 4:30 a.m., not because I'm particularly ambitious to accomplish anything this early morning, but because that's the time my body says "Get UP." I let Egg out of the storage room first thing, and she has been stalking around the house complaining, which sounds an awful lot like "Mom, mom, mom!" from here. Cranky kitty. She visits me here in the office every so often and bats at my petting hand. She's ready to go home, and letting me know that this is not home and she's tired of it. She misses being able to go outside anytime she wants, but I've told her that, until she keeps hiding in the storage room every time there's a noise in the house, she stays inside. She's not happy with that decision. Poor baby. This is her third move in her short life, at just a year and a half old.
Corey and I, on the other hand, settled into the living room and admired our work for a couple hours last night. Moved a couple things to the perfect place, and just basked in the feeling of being at home. Our style could probably be called "garage sale rustic," but neither of us cares about trends, or modern sleek lines, just comfort and elements that mean "home" to us. Thank you to those who called it "comfy-cosy," that's pretty much what we were shooting for. We've been "living lightly" for nearly the entire nine years we were married, not putting much on the walls or on the floors, not buying much furniture, as there was always another move in the offing. Here, once we put something in place, it may stay there for years--and for some things, for the rest of our lives.
Different. I like it! So far, anyway...
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR8 -
Karen: I am so sorry fot your loss. Our fur babies are such important parts of our lives. We lost our last dog to a bee sting, and it broke our hearts. We started looking for another right away & found a litter of pups within a few weeks. Our “puppy” is 10 now.4

Good morning all! Happy Sunday! I feel like I am in a zone of "sameness". You know what I mean? For instance; my daughter calls daily, and sometimes I just don't have anything to say/add to the conversation because nothing has changed. Still working, same kids here, getting the same chores done, making the same to-do list,...I guess that is a good thing, because something NEW happening isn't always a good something new. I guess I will take the sameness. But it is very BLAH.
Lanette- Your search for Wendy took you back a year and made me think. A year ago, I was stressing over my hubby's loss of employment. A year later, he is still unemployed, but I am not stressing as much mainly because I am working so hard. lol I really don't mind working so many hours; it bothers me more that he is constantly underfoot or needing help or just plain crabbing about something. I love him; but he is a pill.
Machka- I am sure the word retrieval issues that your hubby is having is an expected, yet minor problem for him to have following his head injury. Is he doing any word retrieval exercises? You can find a whole bunch of them online. Most are basic skills type, that kids do in school. Fill in the blank, categorizing words, word patterns, etc. Might seem simplistic to him, but it will stimulate those neurological connections to fire back up. We used these types of exercises to help a friend after his stroke. Just thought I would throw it out there in case you can glean anything from it. https://www.amyspeechlanguagetherapy.com/uploads/7/5/7/4/7574967/word_retrieval.pdf
Karen VA- So, so sorry about Farley! Sending waves of love and comfort your way!
Lisa- It is wonderful to have one room, pretty much done, so that you can just sit; away from all of the moving clutter and just relax! Your living room looks fantastic!
Heather- So how long do you have now until you are in your new place? I am just wondering how quickly things move once all of the "chain gang" members are signed and approved.
Kate UK- Congrats on the 3 pound weight loss!
Machka- I almost forgot! I just about spit my coffee out on my laptop the other morning, when you mentioned your menstrual cycle issues when you were taking the turmeric. This has been happening to me! I have had no period for a good year, then just last spring I began to have one. And not just a normal period, but a 7-9 day and heavy flow one (my normal was always 3-5 days and very light). THEN...no period for a day or two and another five days of heavy flow. Then nothing for a couple of months...and it would start all over again. I am going into the doc next week to have every thing rechecked (thyroid, too) now that I have been off the turmeric for a month (by then). If this has all been due to the turmeric, I will just be stunned. Hoping it is/was. Because not taking it, is an easy fix.
Rebecca- Hooray! Please tell me you were teary when you first got your arms around your boy!? Because I was just looking at the photo of the big airport hug! Ah that feeling when your kids are home...Enjoy!
Well, I better be going. I have a friend (another childcare provider) coming over this morning to go over some curriculum we are sharing. Then Trentin arrives at 11:30, but will only be here a couple of hours. If it is nice out, I will see if I can get him outside. It rained all day yesterday. Got a little hail, too (that made it interesting). A few branches off the tree and in the yard that need to be picked up. Oh well, on we go...ttfn xoxoxo KJ (Kelly)3 -
Beth glad to see you posting. The trip sounded like a lot of work but also fun for all. It's good that you and DH recognize your pattern after a long work day--you know they say that sitting on the couch watching tv is the new smoking--actually more dangerous!
DH and I have finally arrived at a point where we've gotten serious about including movement into our day, he now hits the gym with me 3 days a week. He used to eat a horrible fast food lunch every day. Luckily, he has found a little caribbean place near work and orders a cup of soup every day for lunch and that has been a much better choice, more importanly--no more soda for him. I can't tell you how relieved I am that he has stopped drinking the soda. It was always a sore point between us. Typical for a man, the minute he removed soda, he dropped belly fat. Anyway, now that he has joined me on this journey it feels a little less lonely.
Lisa your decor style "garage style rustic" made me laugh. Like you, we don't hang much on the walls, move-in minimalism is what we are. However, after 6 years in this house, we finally bought a living room rug and are quite pleased with the look, perhaps in another 6 years we'll get a coffee table! Anyway, your living room really does look warm and cozy.
A chilly, Autumnal Sunday ahead for me. I'm thinking baked apples would be a perfect treat later today.

Maybe that's what it is for you!
I have had wonky periods in the past, and each time things go really wonky I've been tested and they've discovered polyps and pre-cancer. I've been for 2 surgeries for those things, so they check me every 6 months or so. I had just gone through the testing and came up clear.
And then, days later, my period started out of the blue at an odd time.
Given that I had just been given an "all clear", I didn't think it was a health thing ... and I thought it was odd that my very long period ended shortly after I stopped taking turmeric.
But I haven't tested the theory.

Have short ribs in the slow cooker right now. The recipe calls for 4 lbs, but the slow cooker that I’m using can only hold two so I’ll do it in two batches. I probably should have gotten out the larger one. Right now I have an apple pie in the oven. I’m trying using aluminum foil and see how that works (the foil in a pie plate). I’d like to take one up to Maria’s but I need to try this first. I really don’t want to take up a pie plate because it’s just something that she’ll have to return. Of course, that’ll give her a reason to come down there, but I doubt she will. I did invite her for Christmas. We’re going to have our Christmas a week early, so she can come with Denise and Pete. Denise wants me to have anything written say “Peter”. Not sure exactly why.
Karen in VA – (((CRY))) My heart is breaking for you. It’s so hard.
Lisa – what an amazing job you did!
The other apple pie turned out to have too much juice in it, so I’m trying making another small one but this time not putting as many crumbs on top. Maybe that’ll help
Sue in WA – great news at the cardiologist
Vince said that we’ll probably put down grass seed tomorrow.
Sunday here: Did Be Fit Yoga Fix DVD. The plan for tomorrow is to do some hula hooping, hold my plank, then take the extremepump class.
Katla – welcome back!
Don’t know why, but I feel very tired right now. I had a good night’s sleep, so I really don’t know why.
Sharon – I remember WAAAYYYY back when when we had to have our Old English Sheepdog put down, I still remember them walking him out of the room where we were and taking him in the back. Yes, it IS a good thing thing’s have changed and you can now be with your pet. To this day I will swear on a stack of bibles that one of our cats who was sick that we had to have put down was looking at me as if to say “it’s OK”

Morning ladies
I am up and having my second cup of tea...the boys have been walked ,ate and I went down and fed DFIL he starts to eat on his own then stops so I fed him the rest...he did pretty good this morning...
Joyce Meyers message spoke to.me this morning..so I will relax with my second cup.of tea and read and enjoy the boys and the foliage and my old home....0 -
Michele: Why don't you bake the apple pie in a disposable tin pie pan? Maybe you feel tired because you are constantly busy and on the go.
Carol in GA0 -
Happy Sunday ladies!
Rebecca - I can feel your joy in those photos of you and your DS! And yes, he does look more mature. Have a wonderful time with him!! Get all the hugs you can!!!
Janetr - thank you for the info about pizza crust made with chicken. It's on the agenda for dinner tonight. It's been quite a week for new things, lol. First Fascinator and now Chicken Pizza Crust!
Heather - You'll miss your rural setting, but being closer to stores and interesting places to walk will be great and I think you'll settle in quickly.
Sue in WA - having critters and stalls to clean, feed to lug, hay to buck is such a good way to keep fit. I think that's what I miss the most about not being on the farm anymore.
Beth in Buffalo - missed you, glad you were able to take your son on a vacation, which I'm sure he enjoyed. Great to hear your DH is on board with getting back on board with a healthy lifestyle.
Karen in NY - your DH rocks getting healthier as well. What made him decide to change his diet and head to the gym with you?
Do any of you take MSM for joint/muscle pain? I have a chiropractor appointment tomorrow morning to see if my neck is out of whack - and a cause of my shoulder pain. The chiro is into nutritional supplements and I'll ask him.
More on memory loss.... I've noticed in my DH, if he's stressed or in pain, his memory isn't that good. And I've noticed the same about myself. Yesterday he was pain free and we started discussing various plants and bushes in our back yard. I couldn't even think of the common name of one of them (purple smoke) and he starts listing the botanical name of it and other plants, including spelling.
Thank you Sharon near Seattle - not being able to think of a name for "key" is nothing compared to not remembering what a key is used for.
My sympathies to all of you who are in the final throes of periods and getting on with menopause. So glad that's behind me.
Waiting for daylight to hit on this foggy morning so I can get some steps in.
Have a good Sunday ladies!

Beth - so happy for you that you had a good vacation with your elder son. It must have been a LOT of work, but it sounds as if it was worth it.
Had a good day so far. Did my exercises, did a bit of writing. After lunch DH and I got our decluttering hats on and sorted the freezer plastic out. Now it takes up ONE shelf. :noway: Going to give away a large red stew pot. It's lovely, but surplus to requirements. I will ask my cleaner first.
Then it was the turn of the utility drawers. Oh my! Heaps of old cutlery, old instruction books, nameless electrical stuff etc. We've sorted out what needs to be left for the incomers and taken the rest for a separate box file we started for all our instruction books together. They've been in different places. Cleared the lounge drawers and then I did 100 bonus calories on the recumbent bike while DH tackled his study. Phew!!!! He had all the stuff from the cabinet we got rid of to sort out. Making progress.
Cup of tea and a snack now. Knackered.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx3 -
heather nothing like a deadline to keep you decluttering! You’ve got this.
Lanette I wish I knew what “clicked” in his mind. When we returned from our So. Africa trip he just started changing his habits. We’ve talked about it some, he does have a goal weight in mind (lose about 10lbs) he’s never been a drinker or binge eater (like me ) but overall choices are fatty, sweet, salty, typical SAD with a fast food chaser!!
Saw a pic of myself posted at work (meet the teacher bulletin board). Yowza, my neck!!!! Wish I had worn a scarf for the pic. Ah well such is vanity.
Daughter met this majestic animal on safari yesterday—omg

Heather and/or other ladies from the British Isles..... what exactly is a "tea" - not the just drink, but the meal? Is it an extra snack meal in the afternoon before late dinner?
I was watching reruns of Vera the other night and one of the detectives fell and hit his head, was kind of woozy and a child took him in and told Vera "I gave him his tea" rather than "I gave him some tea". Which made me think it was tea with snack included. I could be wrong.
The sun is up, but pea-soup chilly 45 degree fog. So I dug out a Lesley Sansone walking tape and got in 1200 steps in 15 minutes in the back room. Not as many steps if I'd have physically walked outside, but I am warmed up nonetheless.

yo peeps
yesterday didn't workout, more OT at work, today breakfast in bed by master chef kirby, gonna go to the gym tomorrow more OT. no gym workout. so still doing the basics. glad that I ride and run without the gym workout still so at least I'm doing something.
then next week go to California for the 1/2 marathon. I really haven't done much training for it. one day I did do a 10mile run at least.3 -
It was 45 degrees and clear here this morning. My walking friend wasn't feeling well but the dogs and I went out anyway. My new winter coat with the black wool hat and scarf I knit last year were the perfect thing to wear. I have 8700 steps and will soon head for the grocery store where I will walk some more. Then I'll lie down and give my back a rest.

Lanette - You are right. Tea refers both to the drink and to 'afternoon tea' , which is a meal. It can be small or large. It could be a 'cream tea' with scones and clotted cream. It could be a 'high tea', as it was in my childhood, with something cooked, on toast maybe. If someone invited me to 'tea' I would expect sandwiches and cake. In Vera I would think it might be something cooked with bread and cake in the northern style. In my youth, in the south, in the 50s the high tea sufficed as a dinner, but these days it is usually a snack. People rarely go in for it much these days, unless they are on holiday. A cream tea is a holiday treat and is served at the best hotels. Sandwiches, scones, jam and cream, and cake.
Just had a lovely bath.

Michele: Thanks for your welcome back. I was not able to access the internet while travelling because the parks where we stayed did not offer that service. My cellphone worked just fine, and I logged every bite and swallow. I was also able to access the MFP home page and comment there.
Lanette: When I’m stressed or in pain, my brain doesn’t work all that well, either. I suspect that may be true for most people. :ohwell:
NYKaren: I’m a sufferer of Seasonal Affective Disorder, SAD, and vitamin D3 has been a huge help. It has changed my life in the dark months and made life better. I take it every day.
Barbie: Your 45 degree morning reminded me that we left our outdoor thermometer in the RV. I have other things to get there, too, and I’ll be heading out asap to get them. It is chilly and I’d rather stay home. :ohwell:
I have a riding lesson this afternoon. I’ll likely be dressing a bit warmer than recent rides. DSIL wanted us to continue RVing along with them, but I wanted to go to my lesson. DH was ready to come home, too.

Turn about is fair play. When I can't stand looking at something of his another moment, onto his workbench it goes!
NYKaren that is a BIG lion.

Barbie great advice to Allie. Hooray for new winter coat!
Autumn and apples. Pastor and his wife own a cider press. Yesterday some from church whacked zillions of apples into fourths for the hopper while others cranked the chopper or turned the press. A 4 hour workout but only 1900 steps for the day. At one point a deer was attracted by the scent and watched the proceedings with great interest. After seeing what all goes into the hopper (culls, rot, mold, worms, bugs), I definitely double filtered and pasteurized the results. But OH so tasty! Joe won't even taste it, as it didn't come sealed from the grocery store, and this without seeing the source material . Got a dozen beautiful high grade apples for eating/cooking, thinking to make apple crisp with oatmeal topping, or a pie in a store bought crust. Also looking for that can of pumpkin way back in the pantry so I can make Barbie's spicy apple pumpkin soup. Then we'll know fall is really here!
