Barbara, I haven't made the spicy apple pumpkin soup in a long time. Once I stopped making gallons of applesauce, it wasn't so appealing. I remember it fondly. I have really simplified my cooking.1

Our SIL isn’t good. Have lots of mail to read & just started when I saw Heather’s wonderful news.
HEATHER,What a wonderful relief for you both. Starting a new adventure you have worked so hard for!
Good things happen. I need to remember that fact.
Trying to keep basics done, laundry, cleaning etc. Never know when we will be called to help or more when SIL goes back to hospital. You all take care
Pat in Oh5 -
Hello all: Cold foggy day here. I wore my heavy sweater under my choir robe this morning to keep warm. I am feeling like I need a nap maybe just to get warm. Ham and broccoli casserole for dinner tonight with a fruit salad. Has anyone tried moondrop grapes? I got some at the store last week and they are really good. They are black seedless grapes with a very long oval shape. Very sweet and good.
Pat - so sorry about SIL.
Katla - Glad you had a good adventure. Hope you get warmed up at your riding lesson.
Lanette - You are right about chores helping to keep one in shape. Sometimes I feel I would rather not go out but that is not an option and usually I feel better once I am out there.
Rebecca - You look very happy in that first picture. Enjoy!
Everyone take care, Sue in WA1 -
Quite a bad sinus headache today. But Mocha is trying to make me feel better! DH gets home soon! Yay!

Katla Good to see you posting again; glad you're back & enjoyed your time away. Sad to hear you lost a dog to a bee sting. So sudden & unexpected.
Michele Short ribs in the slow cooker sound heavenly. My son made a special chili for an annual Chili Cook-Off involving about 10 families who are a group of friends. The cook-off was last night & I haven't heard how it went, but when I took my granddaughter home yesterday, the house smelled amazing. He sent a pint home with me with instructions to refrigerate for a day or two to allow the flavors to marry.
I don't know if you have a dehydrator, but on the rare occasion when I make a fruit pie from scratch, I lightly dehydrate the fruit to avoid the problem of too much liquid. Just a thought.
NYKAREN OMG is right. What a magnificent creature!
That's great about your husband giving up soft drinks. My partner drinks Gatorade and diet sodas. I keep my mouth shut, but it is a source of minor annoyance for me. I think it bothers me because I grew up in a household where a 7-Up was a rare treat. We drank water, milk, or tea. The adults also drank coffee. We did not drink Kool-aid or Gatorade. If my parents had a cocktail, my dad would sometimes use some 7-Up, and that's when we would be allowed to have a small glass of "pop".
Pip Breakfast in bed a la Kirby? Sounds wonderful!
Lanette Many years ago I was in a very stressful marriage. Over a very short period of time, I locked myself out of my house several times, and out of my car a couple of times. One of the times I locked myself out of the house, my toddler was asleep in the house! It was just stress turning my brain to mush. I think stress distracts people from remembering things because their brains are attending to other demands (their stressors).
Barbara My mouth was watering thinking about that delicious cider. Bugs and all, LOL!
(((Pat)))
Sue I haven't tried Moondrop grapes. My daughter-in-law had some Cotton Candy grapes at her house, though. They actually taste like Cotton Candy!
Rye Sorry about your sinus headache, but Oh, what a cute, sweet therapy kitty!

The deck project is slowly coming along. We are done with power spraying it. Today we put one gallon of sealer on but it didn't go as far as it was supposed to, probably because the attempt to spray it on failed and we had to roll it on with paint rollers. Frankly, it was a pain in the ar$e. And we aren't anywhere near done.

I am going to take something to help me sleep tonight. I do that about 4 times a year. Grieving over Farley, along with awakening multiple times expecting to help him with all the little things I used to help him with in the night, made last night miserable, so I am cranky and tired now. I am going to go to bed in a couple of hours, so I can be refreshed in the morning to home school my grandson. We are watching an old episode of SNL right now. It's interesting to watch the old ones. They are time capsules.

Thank you everyone for your kind condolences. We've had Farley since 2002.

I must have fallen asleep (shh….don’t tell Vince) so heavily that I didn’t even hear the phone ring when Denise called. See, previously Dave (Pete’s step-father) had diverticulitis and has a temporary colostomy. He was supposed to go to the MD yesterday for a colonoscopy and then they’d see about reversing the colostomy. Well, it seems that he also has gall stones. Denise said that she thinks Thanksgiving will be cancelled. Dave usually goes to his sister’s for Christmas and he’s talking about even not going there. He may be a little depressed.
Carol in GA – I suspect the reason I was so tired was because I had some of the apple pie. I hadn’t made it in so long that I wanted to be sure it was OK. Plus, I wanted to see if it was very juicy. The first one was, but the second one wasn’t. Now I’m not sure if it’s the brand of apples that I used on the second one (I used Lady Alice’s which aren’t as juicy) or the fact that I didn’t put as many crumbs on the top so more steam was able to escape. I was trying to avoid a tin plate, but I think I just may have to. On second thought, I may not have to
We put down grass seed today. Vince wanted to do just the bare spots. I thought we should have done more. But in March I want to do more. Actually, I think it would be best if we were to have a landscaper at least at first put in a decent lawn and then we maintain it. But Vince has this “thing” about paying someone to do what he can do. I remember we have a neighbor and Vince commenting how they spent so much time on their lawn and it still looked like c***. Until they had a professional come in and work on it. The guy who does a lot of lawns in the neighborhood at least has better equipment. I see where the aerated the lawn next door and he has these large spikes on the tractor. Ours aren’t nearly as large.
I’m making this hooded scarf for Jess and I’m having the hardest time with the decreasing. The ladies at ACMoore will probably be able to help me Tuesday night
Speaking of decluttering: there was this box in my exercise room, been there since we moved here. I looked inside one day and saw it was all full of electronic stuff so I mentioned it to Vince that he needed to go thru it. Months went by, he didn’t go thru it, I think he forgot about it. So….I put it in front of the TV. What did he do? He moved it. So I put it in front of the other TV where he usually watches the (NASCAR) races. Been there a few weeks and he just went thru it yesterday. There are things in for the Salvation Army and others that need to be recycled when they have the hazardous waste pickup.
Karen in VA – one thing about short ribs in the slow cooker, they literally fall off the bone. Portioned them out so we can have them for dinner some nights. I don’t have a dehydrator, but that’s an interesting thought. I wonder if putting the apples in the oven overnight on a LOW setting (like 200) would work. Vince also drinks Gatorade and diet soda. He went to the MD a while ago who told him that the Gatorade (he went in summer) should be cold. I think he feels that my water should be cold.

Love you my friends

NYKaren: I need to add that I take D3 every day to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder and adjust the number of capsules I take daily. I take more in winter and less in summer because the summer sun gives me a dose of D3. :flowerforyou:
Karen in VA: We lost the dog we had just before our current pup (now aged 11). She was in DSIL‘s garden snapping at bees. DSIL heard her yelp and our dog ran for the back porch. She died there, and it was a matter of a minute or two from the sting. I feel sorry for the dog, DSIL, and ourselves.
Rye: You are a gifted artist.
My riding lesson turned into a trail ride and I had a wonderful time. Arrow did his best. He has asthma and I had to be mindful of him getting enough air.

Janetr - There is a medicine that can do all those things, but it doesn't come in a bottle. It's called exercise.
Since I've been vigorously exercising my skin is much better, my joints don't ache as much, my memory and thinking power is better, my mood is better and my weight is less. Miracle medicine! I think the running kept me sane through all this.
However I was also helped by the two books on meditation by Dan Harris and I'm re-reading his second one at the moment. Lots of the things that have helped me I first heard about on this thread.
Another day of decluttering. Today I will do the top shelves of the wardrobes. There lurks a fascinator, I know. I hope my mother's old china doll, Elizabeth, is up there too. I also must make sure the boxes of photos are in order. I'm not going to sort them before the move, just make sure I know what is what. Also find suitable drawers for loose ends.
DH has to tell the utilities.
Going to turn colder by the time we move. As long as it's not blowing a gale and raining!!!!
Love Heather UK xxxxxxx3 -
Lisa in AR - I’ll bet it feels lovely to be settled in place and be able to relax! It sounds like Egg wants to annoy you enough that you’ll let her out. My two are now indoor only. I have bobcats, cougars, coyotes and bears occasionally around here. I lost one to a coyote, and two of the neighbors lost theirs to bobcats. I’m taking no more chances.
Kelly - I sure know that “sameness”! Being retired let’s you get to a point where if you don’t have an appointment coming up you can forget what day it is easily.
Machka - one of my daughter’s spent a lot of time with ominous Pap tests and a number of procedures due to those abnormalities. I hope you don’t ever have those worries again. They can be so draining!
Michele - I do believe our fur babies let us know when it’s time to let them go. That doesn’t make it much easier, but it helps.
Heather in UK - I love the term “knackered” for being totally worn out. One of my grandmas used to say that.
You also mention a drawer for “loose ends”. My “drawers” have had a loose end in them for years!
NYKaren - “OMG!” is right! What a gorgeous animal. Now it needs an audio track of that roar!
Pip! Hope that ½ marathon goes well!
Janetr OKC - that ornament is a stunner!
Barbie, you’re doing so great with your back, and still getting steps in. I can’t wait to see if my surgery and weight loss will let me do more steps! Bully for you!
Heather, one of my family’s happiest memories is of the girls and I going for high tea at a little shop in Victoria BC. We couldn’t afford the one at the Empress Hotel, but this one made us feel just as grand!
Pat in OH - just gave you a virtual hug. What you’re going through right now tugs at my heart.
Rye, your Mocha kitty is so sweet!
Karen in VA - It is hard to wake at the times we were needed and realize the need isn’t there anymore. Somehow it makes the loss a bit harder instead of easier.
Barbara the Southern Oregon Coastie AHMOD - Your title now makes such perfect sense that I believe I may begin signing myself -
Sharon, the Seattle area AHMOC - sounds like “amuck” a bit, but that fits too!2 -
JanetR - In my recent far too busy-ness, I realized I forgot to mention how much I loved the black ornament, such an elegant piece! I like this last one a lot, too. Really looking forward to finding my sewing machine in the storeroom and putting it out so I can be a maker again instead of a mover!Lisa in AR - I’ll bet it feels lovely to be settled in place and be able to relax! Sharon - I get that, I really do. It worries me, too, a bit. But, my husband is determined that she be able to get out and roam, and made sure of it in town. I was worried about that at the time, but she's quite cautious, and he's determined, and Egg is more his cat than mine. Mrr, our son's cat, goes in and out John's bedroom window all night long, as there's a piece of the old screen where he can get in and out, and he's a tough old bird. Will be glad when Egg and Mrr reach some form of detente'. Egg's more of a scaredy-cat, so we need to arrange a space for her where she can get back in at will.
Oh, and I wanted to say, the gastric bypass changed everything for me. I had always hated running, but learned to love it (well, shuffle-run, with the knees) and did that until the right knee got so bad that I just couldn't anymore. But every pound you lose is four pounds of pressure off your leg joints, and you will be amazed how much better you feel. Looking forward to the knee replacement for the same reason.
Karen in VA - I feel ya on the soda/Gatorade thing. My son asked me, when I was picking up lunch, to pick him up a Coke, and it weirded me out. Lots of reasons. Haven't drank soda/pop/coke, whatever you want to call it, since my own gastric bypass, 13 years ago now. And knowing it's empty calories now, and how much damage sugar does to me just made it weird. I know you're missing Farley, after so long taking care of him, and my heart goes out to you.

Busy day in front of me today - need to get Corey's lunch made, and coffee going (it's 4 a.m.), and as he goes out the door, I'll be right behind him. Going down to the rental house to clean all the floors and surfaces so we can turn that back over to them (fingers crossed they get it rented soon and get us out of the lease!). Once I get that done, need to go to the office supply store and pick up linen paper to get 200 letters and envelopes printed, packaged up and mailed out to Midland, TX for signatures and sending out from there. Long story, but for work, of course.
Today/tomorrow, got to find all my usual business clothes and get packed for a business trip. Leaving Wednesday morning about this same time, and will be in El Paso and the environs for a week. Not usually an issue, packing, but things are a little scattered around the house at the moment, got to find everything and get it all back in my suitcase. Back again about midnight the following Tuesday.
Off to the races, kids,

Did a bit of writing just after I spoke to you this morning. First time I've done it so early.
Sorted out loads of old jewellery from the top of one wardrobe. A pile to take to the charity shop, but I've kept some valueless sentimental pieces. From my teenage years. They are in a wooden box my parents gave to me one Christmas when I was about seven.
More to do this pm.

KetoneKaren wrote: »Machka It's amazing how well your husband is doing, but it doesn't erase the heartache of what has changed.

Kate UKMachka - I think you were here more than a year and a half ago when my husband shattered his wrist in a workplace accident. I mentioned at some point during his recovery that it was like being married to the injury, rather than the husband, as it was the focus of every conversation, every interaction, for six months. I resented that injury so much for taking my husband away from me, and the changes I saw in him during that time, honestly (not that I told him that). Made me feel incredibly selfish and lacking in both understanding and any form of long-term sympathy. I am not a patient person, rather the opposite, and as a caretaker, I'm closer to Nurse Ratched, I'm thinking.
But yesterday, I watched him reach down and take the weight of a massive chest-of-drawers with that same hand to carry it in the house, and it made me realize once again how fortunate we both truly were. I think of you often, and hope you know how much I admire and respect you, and Rori as well. You are both incredibly strong women, given a seemingly impossible labor of love, and you both accomplish it with grace and enviable patience. You both make me want to be a better person.
Love y'all,
Lisa in AR
Thank you all!
And Lisa, when you wrote that 18 months or so ago, I was right there with you. I do not do well with injury and illness in others, and do not have a whole lot of sympathy and empathy. My mother is a nurse and wondered if I'd ever follow in her footsteps and become a nurse, but nope ... no interest in that sort of thing at all.
Then this happened. And ... I really keep wondering how in the world I'm managing to deal with it all month after month. It's like I've been given a special dose of grace or something from above. Whatever it is, I'm thankful for it!
That said, my husband and his carer have nicknamed me the "Pitbull"!!!! Not toward them ... but toward all these organisations I've had to deal with. Maybe I've just redirected my frustrations with the situation.
Machka in Oz5 -
My sympathies to all of you who are in the final throes of periods and getting on with menopause. So glad that's behind me.
The worst of it for me is that stress seems to trigger the hotflashes.
So there I am in a meeting with a whole bunch of people from the hospital or something - heads of departments, doctor specialists, etc. - trying to make a point about my husband's care, when all of a sudden .... WHOOSH!!
And I'm sitting there thinking, "Oh you've got to be kidding! I'm trying to make a point here! Being red and sweaty doesn't help!"

Machka safe travels. In addition to everything on your plate, you made time to organize and support the Audax riders? Girl, you amaze!
The event (or actually series of 3 events) is "ours". This is the third year we've organised it. The turnout is still small, but we're hopeful that one year it might take off a bit.
So we've got some of the organisation down now, and fortunately my husband has been able to help. I've given him a list of things to do.
And as for being busy ... I just submitted the "big" assignment in my current course. 50 pages long and worth 30% of the total mark. I've been working on it for the last 2 weeks or so.
Just one more assignment in this particular course left, and it is due Wednesday.
Machka in Oz3 -
Machka, I haven't said anything, but each day my admiration for you grows as you tell about your accomplishments in the face of your husband's recovery efforts. You show me so much about balance and commitment. Thank you.
Lisa, The cats in my family have always been indoor/outdoor cats with a cat door to make things easier for all of us. In one house, I installed the cat door by myself. In the last house there was no cat door and I had quite a few restless nights when one of the cats failed to return home by my bedtime. When we moved to this house seven years ago, there were pet restrictions that required that Bernie become a completely indoor cat. The week before we moved, I saw a dead cat in the road a block from our house that looked a lot like Bernie. I was relieved to find him at home when I got there, but that went a long way to help me be comfortable with the need to keep Bernie indoors. He often lies on the window sill looking longingly out at the trees and birds but doesn't try to get out. The greatest downside is that I have to take him to vet every few months to get his nails trimmed because they get long without trees to climb and whatever else outdoors kept the nails short.
Heather, I am reading "The Happiness Advantage" by Shawn Achor. I heard him interviewed by Dan Harris on the 10% Happier podcast. The book is long but for a quick view of what he has to say, you can Google "Shawn Achor TED talk" and hear the short version of the happiness advantage.
Sharon, best wishes on increasing your step count. I seek every opportunity to be active. I welcome the chance to go to the store to get in a few extra steps. Weight loss coupled with the right attitude (which you have already) are bound to help you be more active.

Pat in OH: I am sorry to hear that your SIL is having health problems. :flowerforyou:
Janetr: Yes! I’d love to know of a medicine that “causes permanent weight loss, removes wrinkles and increases energy.” If you find it, let us all know. Until then, counting calories, yoga and horseback riding are woking wonders for me.
Heather: You get to move at last!!!I hope that you and DH are happy in your new home.
Allie: Your newfound independence and freedom is wonderful and I enjoy reading your posts and knowing you are happy. You are a blessing in your DFIL’s life. WTG!!!
Pip: I hope you have a grand adventure going to California after Nov 4. Post when you can! What route will you take? :flowerforyou:
Machka: I found this online: Hot and spicy foods, caffeinated beverages, and alcohol can trigger hot flashes. Learn to recognize your triggers and avoid them. Relax. Some women find relief from mild hot flashes through meditation; slow, deep breathing; or other stress-reducing techniques.Feb 10, 2018

Wow, I feel a bit like a child being scolded for posting what I thought was "humorous" . I DO exercise vigorously, every day, I DO log my food and water intake daily and I HAVE LOST 35 pounds since the first of this year making a total weight loss of 130 pounds from my highest weight. My body has more strength and muscle definition than ever in my life from kettlebell workouts.
I shall monitor more closely my posts that made me smile, not to be taken "literally".
Thanks my friends for your kind comments on the ornaments.
Janetr OKC2 -
Kelly - I too have trouble telling anyone anything new that is happening in my life. This sameness though is so welcome to me as I had a run of years where everything seemed to be going wrong. I have started actively looking for other work though as this do nothing job is making me feel brain dead!
Karen- So sorry for your loss of Farley.
Sharon - Loved your play on words in response to Heather's post about loose drawers.
Karen - How close is your daughter to those lions?
Lisa - I love your style, that is how I would describe mine as well. I looked around my house after your comment "garage sale rustic" and I don't have any "new" furniture in my house except for one shelf. I have antiques and garage sale finds. I have been caring for an old trundle sewing machine for my friend who was diagnosed with bi-polar a couple of years ago. She before she was hospitalized and received treatment was very close to homeless, she had her very few possessions stored at her Father's and her Daughter's and felt they were stealing from her. She had called me and asked if I could take a couple of totes of stuff. It ended up being a half ton load. Just last week she told me to keep the sewing machine, she didn't think she would ever have room for it again and it matched my decor so nicely. I told her that I would graciously accept it, but if she ever changed her mind it was hers. I worry about her a lot and I'm hoping this isn't a sign of a deeper depression. She really has no one in her life except her children and me as so many wrote her off when before her diagnosis, it's very sad.
Husband's injury and being able to lift - My husband and I moved to Alberta from New Brunswick in 1997, he was a 1st year apprentice welder and the company he went to work for actually paid his way out here. The day before his first anniversary with the company he caught his right hand index finger in a chop saw. The surgeon was able to reattach it, but it was a pretty useless finger. It was just in the way and he had to consciously think about moving it so it was dangerous really. WCB had told him he would not be able to work near power tools and be covered by them due to the finger. He decided in 2000 to have it amputated in the hopes to be able to go back to welding. He had it amputated and went for almost a year of physio therapy and still has no real strength in this hand. Fortunately, he is left handed, but it bothers him still that he can't help lift things like he used to. He tries, but it causes him a lot of embarrassment if it gives out and he drops something. If he hits that hand in the "right spot" it brings him to his knees still and he suffers occasionally from the phantom pains you hear people speak of.
Allie - "Frost on the Pumpkin" that reminds me of an old country song. "How you doin' Country Bumpkin" I too put my life in the Good Lord's hands last year and have found such peace since doing so. It was the best decision I ever made and I am grateful everyday that my friend started leading me in that direction after several years of turning away.
Heather - I have a lot of old jewelry of my Grandmother's, I think 4 jewelry boxes of it. I have decided to make wall art out of it for my daughter's and I. That way I can enjoy viewing it daily. Of course, I will only use her costume jewelry for this project not her good pieces. This is an example of what I am doing. I am going to do a hummingbird for myself as it was my Grandmother's favourite bird. For my youngest I am doing a sail boat as she was in Sea Cadets for years and is a Level 1 Sail Instructor. My eldest I am either doing a book or a music note as both mean a lot to her. My eldest also carried a brooch bouquet for her wedding instead of just flowers and used some of my Grandmother's jewelry for it, so she has those in a vase in her house. This is an idea of what I am going to do, although this is from Pinterest, not mine.
I managed to get some crafting done this weekend and have a lot more wood sanded and ready for hubby to burn tonight and tomorrow. My first craft sale is Friday and I'm very nervous I'm going to run out of stock! I am taking Thursday off in the hopes of getting a lot more ready to go.

And honestly, wouldn’t it be nice for once to have a side effect from a needed medicine be a welcome one, instead of horrid. That germ of truth is what made it so humorous!
