Diet sodas

Due to the bad reports, my husband insists I stay away from Aspartame and Sucrose, so I use liquid Stevia to sweeten hot and iced tea. I buy Zevia sodas (sweetened with Stevia), but I sneak in an occasional Diet Dr. Pepper on rare occasions when I don't have iced tea with me. I'm leery of artificial sweeteners. I switched from Stevia packets to liquid Stevia, because the packets I used have extra ingredients which add 2g of carbs.
I'll tell you what, the day my husband insists what I eat or don't eat, that'll be an interesting day for the ole marriage, a very interesting day indeed.
Fortunately, my husband is a sweet, smart man who looks out for my best interests. I don't always agree with his opinions, but I respect him.
He might be a little mislead on aspartame though. It’s not really as scary as some believe. Do check out the link I tagged you in above. It’s a great read.11 -
I have one a day mon - fri with my lunch. Down nearly 2.5 kg now. I can't remember the last time I had a full sugar coke.5

I stay away from anything with aspartame in it. After doing research, I found enough to know that even though it is 0 calories, I wouldn't be putting it into my body. Its a personal choice and I know not everyone agrees, but I stay far away from it.

I didn't know so much quackery could fit on one page.28 -

That's an... interesting website to use as proof of anything.

Does not make me crave sweets, and keeps me well hydrated.3

I'd be more concerned about the hydrogen hydroxide in diet sodas. It's a powerful solvent that is used in manufacturing to cut metals, and is found as a component of rocket exhaust. Doesn't sound like something you want to be drinking!22

I drink diet pop daily, it crushes my sugar/sweets cravings and allows me to be well within my caloric intake, so I can eat the calories and carbs I'd normally waste on a regular pop.
PS: I've lost about 20+ lbs so I'd like to say it does not hinder weight loss6 -

But without diet soda, you might have lost 20.083 + pounds in the same amount of time.....3 -
I drink it daily.
Like has been mentioned, it satisfies if I have an urge for something sweet, and it can fill a gap when I really don’t want to use any calories for a snack.
So, yup- a helpful tool in my weight loss toolbox, too!
Oh- and I’ve lost around 60 pounds now, and have had diet soda daily right throughout that journey!4 -
While I was losing weight I’d guess I drank an average of 4-6 diet beverages per day. I did that into the first five years I was at goal. I then was overseas for a few weeks where the diet beverages tasted different (bad aspartame, I suspect ) and I stopped drinking it. Upon my return, I just never went back to it. I’ll have a diet soda on a rare occasion, but the decision making has nothing whatsoever to do with managing my weight.3

I get horrible calf pains from diet sodas (or anything with aspertame). I know people will say it's been proven safe and there is nothing wrong with it, but I think some like myself do have problems with it. I also have problems with fructose, so it may be a small fraction of people with certain genetics? I also don't believe big farm, big pharma, and big brother FDA are always looking out for the best interest of you and I.13

Hmm, I just looked at my Diet Coke and the ingredients are as follows:
INGREDIENTS
CARBONATED WATER, CARAMEL COLOR, ASPARTAME, PHOSPHORIC ACID, POTASSIUM BENZOATE (TO PROTECT TASTE), NATURAL FLAVORS, CITRIC ACID, CAFFEINE.
No hydrogen hydroxide...11 -

Water is also found in rocket exhaust. Should I stop drinking that too?25 -

I could be wrong, but I get the sense there should be a sarcasm tag at the end of the post you're quoting.15 -

A small minority of people have a sensitivity to aspartame. At about 0.5% it is similar to the percentage that have peanut allergies and about half of the number that have either celiac disease or MSG sensitivity (1%). You obviously need to stay away.7 -

Wouldn't hydrogen hydroxide be 2 hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom? What else do we know that has a chemical composition of H2O?12 -

I know, right? And if it’s inhaled, death may occur without medical intervention.8 -

I googled it as I was going to make a snark about the typo, but yeah it is actually something.
It's water reacting as a base so it might actually be harmful.

But I'm an accountant so I may be mis-understanding things.3 -
I find I spend a lot more money with Coke Zero than I ever did on Diet Coke.3

Diet Coke was on sale, 20 cans for $1 more than 12 of Coke Zero so I bought Diet Coke.
I really have trouble telling the difference between the two.0 -

It's been scientifically proven time and time again to be perfectly safe.11 -

I like how the "side effects" are literally everything and anything, way to cover your bases.6 -

haha.. I know.. It's horrible. I should have chosen a more credible link, but alas billing at work couldn't wait much longer. I did my research years ago. Like I said, I know not everyone agrees, but I feel better when I am not putting anything synthetic in my body. Thanks for the fun links. I am going to check out the "quackery" later.25 -
There has been a good amount of observational research which suggests that diet soda consumption leads to increased rates of diabetes and obesity, though this is not evidence of a causal relationship on its own. Many researchers have speculated a number of psychological factors may be to blame, rather than the actual contents of the diet soda.
Some research in mice has indicated that diet soda disrupts natural enzyme and microbial actions in the digestive track, leading to higher rates of diabetes and obesity. Mice studies are hardly proof of similar consequences in humans, but it's enough to give me pause.
I've switched from several bottles of diet soda a week to water and the occasional unsweetened seltzer. I certainly crave sweets less than I did before making the change.25
