Did your surgeon happen to say what usually causes this kind of injury?
@MegaMooseEsq he didn't but I'll have to ask him. I did do some googling and found this 2004 article which studied, among other things, sports related injuries of the EDL tendon. They found only two reports of EDL tendon injures in medical literature related to sports. In one case, a squash player had his pop when he rolled his ankle. In the other case, a hockey player had his cut from another player's skate.2 -
11-1 Rest
11-2 7k intervals
11-3 7k easy
11-4 10.5k slow
11-5 7k recovery
11-6 Rest
11-7 7k intervals
@Tramboman - what is the difference between easy, slow and recovery paces? I am learning how to train smarter, with marathons coming up for me in March and October 2019. I have been running for 25 years but have almost always run up to my edge given my fitness level. This month I have started experimenting with easy, tempo and fartlek runs, per articles I have seen on marathon prep. I am glad I found this group - learning a lot.

@DaveJ_43 I use the Training Pace Calculator from the Runner's World website (www.runnersworld.co.uk). It lets you put in your time and distance from a chosen run, then does the calculations based on your input. Based on my last 5k race time, it indicates that my easy runs should be done at a pace of 7:39 per Km; my tempo/threshold runs should be done at a pace of 6:25 per Km; my V02 max runs should be done at a pace of 5:48 per Km; my speed form runs should be done at a pace of 5:23 per Km; and my long runs should be done at a pace between 7:39 and 8:34 per Km. I do my recovery runs at an easy pace.
I wouldn't be surprised if you checked 10 different webites, you would get 10 different sets of pace suggestions. I'm finding these paces useful for me, as my times are continuing to improve.6 -

I'm starting my taper period for a "marathon" and I'm looking forward to it. I still have 1 more half marathon race next weekend, but I don't think I'll be running it fast. Run to finish is my plan.

Today's run was surprisingly good. I kind of decided yesterday that if it was raining today I would just take an extra rest day. But I did want to get at least a short run in today. I am planning to wear capris on Saturday and they have a pocket on the side of the leg. I usually carry my phone in my flipbelt, but since I also carry a water bottle I have noticed that if I don't carry the bottle the belt slips up and down and I don't want to carry water for a 5k so I wanted to test out running with the phone on my leg to see if that would be better than the slipping flipbelt. I haven't really decided whether my flipbelt has stretched from putting the water bottle in it, or if I just need to go down a size since I have lost ~10 pounds since I got it.
When I got up this morning my weather app showed 0% chance of precipitation for a couple of hours, 54F with feels like 52F, 99% humidity and dew point 55. So I decided that I would go ahead and do a short 2 mile run. Then I looked out the window and the cars outside had a lot of water on them. So I stepped out on the front porch and it sounded like it was raining. So I decided that I wouldn't run. But it didn't look like it was raining. So I waffled back and forth. Then I finally decided that it was not raining, it was just water dripping off the trees and the eaves so I decided I was definitely going out for 2 miles to see how I liked running with the phone on my leg. Once I finally got out the door it was actually pretty good. It wasn't raining, although the 99% humidity made it pretty wet out there. And when I got to the 1 mile mark I was not really ready to turn around so I decided to go for 3.1 miles instead of 2. I figured that I needed a good 5k to decide how I liked using the pocket on the pants. The phone in the pocket seems to work well so I will just use that on Saturday. I debated wearing a jacket this morning, but decided not to. I was a little chilly at the start but I warmed up enough so unless it is a lot colder on Saturday at 8:30 am I will not wear a jacket then either.
I was really glad that I got out there and ran. I'm still surprised sometimes at how much I love running. Even on the days where I have a "bad" run I still usually feel really good afterward. But I will be taking a rest day tomorrow.

@ddmom0811 Eleanor Rose is beautiful name! I'm the opposite of squeamish. When I had foot surgery, I tried to talk the surgeon into letting me watch. He never did though, he said he didn't want me talking to him during the procedure because he needed his full attention on what he was doing. I was bummed, but he took a couple of pictures of it (anybody want to see these?) and it turned out there wasn't much to see. It was just a 2 cm incision.
@debrakgoogins we all started where you started. The longest, fastest runner here had to start right where you started. Don't compare your chapter 1 to someone else's chapter 26.2. We understand this thread can be overwhelming with the number of posts, but do what you can and stick around. There are no hurt feelings if you can't read every post! Kidney stones...OUCH!!!
@quilteryoyo last month while running a 12 hour trail race (this race was defined time, rather than the usual defined distance) I started experiencing pain on the top of my right foot. It wasn't a pain I had ever felt before while running, but I kept going because it came on gradually. For a while I was worried it was a stress fracture. After 25 miles I decided I had enough pain all over, and I had outrun my training, that I decided to power hike the rest of the time. While coming in for my eighth 5 mile loop at the trailhead I decided to run past the loop counter and the rest of the crowd there, and felt a sharp pain on the top of my foot. Right after it popped it actually felt better, so I kept going and completed two 1 mile loops before the time expired.
Other than the general aches and pains of running/hiking 42 miles, I felt pretty good. When I got home and was walking around the house barefoot, the second toe on my right foot got caught on the carpet, was curled underneath my foot as I stepped on it. Yes it hurt!! After the third time that happened, I decided to take a closer look at saw that my second toe was drooping down quite a bit. I could move it, but not to the same extent as my other toes.
I was going to wait a week or two to see if it got better, but @rheddmobile made the comment that if it was a tendon injury, I needed to go in right away. I'm very grateful she said that because it prompted me to go in and have it looked at. I called on a Monday, had my first appointment Tuesday, MRI and surgical consultation Wednesday, and surgery on Thursday! Only 54 hours between my first appointment and my surgery discharge.
What happened was that I completely ruptured the extensor digitorum longus of my second toe. This is the tendon which straightens the toe and helps lift up the foot. It's highly unusual for a rupture like this to be associated with athletic activity. My surgeon, with 30 years experience, had never seen this happen because of running. The surgeon took the remaining tendon attached to my toe and attached it to the EDL of my third toe so that they still fire together.
Surgery was two weeks ago, so one more week with a cast then three with a boot. No running for 10 more weeks.
Recovery seems to be going very well, but it's aggravating not to run. I'm trying to use this time to get things done at home that I never have time to do.
I'm also the complete opposite of squeamish as well, good thing given my job! In fact for me, the more gory the better - I'm a bit of a trauma junkie I would LOVE Tto see pics! I always loved going to theatre (operating room for the yanks)5 -

Yesterday I got to run 3.7 miles. I believe it was my first run below freezing (maybe not counting a couple of runs last winter) and my first run in my new Peregrines. I’d originally left the house in my Ghosts because it looked like the snow was melted on the sidewalks, but then I turned the corner and saw the fallen leaves coated in ice and changed my mind.
Generally speaking the experiment was a big success. I’m going to have to fiddle around with lacing - I ended up with some numbness and had to re-lace mid-run - but I figure that’s par for the course. I could really feel the ground much better than in the Ghosts, which made balance a lot easier. There were a couple of really slick patches on the path where ice had basically formed around the exposed paving stones but the shoes handled it well. Looking at reviews online, it sounds like some people have trouble transitioning between higher and lower drop shoes, but with my giant personal sample size of two, I didn't find it bothered me at all. Like the Ghosts, the Peregrines felt really lightweight and comfortable, just a lot grippier.
I’m considering not running with headphones when there might be ice - even with the shoes, it really does take a lot of concentration and I think not having music would help me focus and remember to slow down on turns and such. I've also really been feeling the effect of not strength training for several weeks, but I honestly don't think I'll be able to rebuild that practice until after we move (see below!) so I'm just trying to accept that.
I wore my Brooks running jacket over a short-sleeved shirt but didn’t love the feel on my elbows. I might have to break down and buy one of those silly insulated vests - it’s possible they might not be quite as silly as all that. I also need new socks AGAIN - I tried wearing my arm sleeves on my legs but my left foot in particular didn’t love that idea and hurt a bit most of yesterday. I think crew or knee socks will be my best bet, but ug so spendy, and I need to watch the cash flow because…
We’re closing on the house next Wednesday!!!!!!! Soon I will be a first-time homeowner with not one but FOUR bathrooms (three showers!), a walk-in closet completely dedicated to exercise gear, and still only two blocks away from dedicated trails. Unrelated to running, the house also has a four-season heated sun-porch, air conditioning, original hardwood from the early 1900s, an on-demand water heater (no more worrying about using the faucet when one of us is in the shower!), and, as previously mentioned, more than one bathroom. I’ve never lived anywhere with more than one bathroom (other than dorms) so I’m very excited about that part.
Of course, now I have to figure out how we're going to move 400-ish pounds of free weights. The woman at the moving company sounded a little baffled but suggested plastic bins. Any suggestions are welcome - I'm off to see what Google thinks.

Congrats on the house @MegaMooseEsq! From your description it sounds like an amazing house and location!
@Orphia - hope the knee is just nerves.
@debrakgoogins glad you are back on the road! Very impressive returning so soon.3 -
@ddmom0811 Congratulations! That is a beautiful name.
@7lenny7 That's great you don't need a cast much longer! I would want to see the pictures.
I had my husband take one of my wound every day since my surgery, because it is mid-back, and I can't get a good look at it otherwise. It was six weeks yesterday, so we'll switch to once a week now. He always says it looks much worse in the pictures. I am allowed to put stuff on it starting today, which I'm hoping will reduce the itch. It is finally less bumpy; the stitches must have mostly dissolved.
Here are some before and after photos (the first photo was taken the year before when the mole was normal):I have sensitive skin, so I reacted to the bandages for about two weeks or so after. Still waiting on a full-body mole and lymph node check, which are supposed to be every three months but will not begin until the end of January because mine wasn't discovered through a dermatologist, and I had to wait for the referral to one. Not at all impressed with Canada's healthcare in this regard, but my surgery happened quickly at least.4 -

Today, 2.33 miles (10 min warm-up, 6 x 3 min run/1 min walk, cool-down) and lower body strength.
MTD: 13.61 / 45 miles
I will do my long run tomorrow as my husband surprised me with concert tickets and a mini getaway for this (long) weekend. He also booked our family a snowboarding trip to Whistler for when we were supposed to go to Hawaii in December. Now, I will have to learn to snowboard. I did ski a bit growing up, but I'm scared! He's been going with my son for over ten years, but I always skipped it due to being busy with work that time of year. And also brrr...
I need to lose at least five pounds if I want to be comfortable in my snow pants. I've gained this year, and even more these last few months despite hardly drinking. I know my sweet tooth is getting in my way.9 -
@MegaMooseEsq so when's the housewarming party? We'll assume if you will be the proud owner of FOUR bathrooms you'll also have enough spare bedrooms for about a million virtual runner friends, right?
Re weights: you say you can't strength train, then you say you need to move the weights. Sounds like the perfect (if kind of time consuming) excuse to pick up and carry a lot of weights to me ;-) Sorry, no helpful suggestions here.

Quoted and highlighted for emphasis. I've only slipped and fell on the ice twice during a run and both times were because I didn't slow down on a turn.
BTW @MegaMooseEsq , I love seeing the ESTRS races on your list! Congrats on the house! Exciting stuff!

@MegaMooseEsq Congrats on the House.
I live wayyyyy north of everybody in this fine group and just switched over to my Peregrine 8's ( not the ice version ) for the winter. The traction on the snow/ice is fantastic so the 8-ice will be even better.
Headphones : never in winter - with the extra clothing/headgear I want to hear the world around me - ATV's racing down a trail, snowmobiles, offroad 4x4, etc. Also want to hear the sound of my foot touching down in the snow - crunchy No sound = potential ice = danger
For winter crew - knee running socks consider Darn Tough or Smart Wool. I actually buy most of my winter kit at the local ski-snowboard shop since keeping people warm and comfortable s their specialty.
I have only been knocked down by ice twice, on the same run less than 1km into a 20k planned day.
About 200m apart at road/trail intersections where the vehicles had polished the road to a beautiful hard white ice. The trails were fine it was the transition from trail to crosswalk - Called it a day - walked back to the coffee shop and pre-paid for the group.
On the topic of office views - since I am in the tech department our office is located in the center of the building to protect from " exterior damage " ( ie car accidentally driving through a wall, vandalism, fire etc ) putting the building out of commission. Zero windows, Entry doors offset by 20 feet around a corner, double layer of cinder block walls - exterior ones filled with concrete - interior with sand. Should have seen the fun electricians had trying to get new conduit and cables through the walls.2 -

Yes, we will definitely have lots of room for guests, virtual and otherwise! I hadn't thought about how moving weights does in fact require lifting - that made me laugh. Mostly it's about packing, though, as my husband has vetoed even a partial self-move. I don't blame him, though my budget-oriented brain cringes a little at the expense. As he pointed out, however, him not taking time off of work will go pretty far to recouping the extra cost.

In a rush cause driving to the big smoke today.
I did a 13k run this morning. After all our conversations about HR I made a point of slowing a bit. Was aiming for 6:30min/k but ended up with an average of 6:15. But my HR was mostly in zone 4, a little in zone 3 and a little in zone 5 (I blame the hills). And I really noticed a difference, overall the run was just easier. So yeah I'm running too fast. I'm even more impressed I managed to run that 20k at that pace. Determination?
So I'm thinking about how I'm going to structure my race next weekend. I'm thinking first 7k at 6:30 per k (that's all the hill). Next 10k at 6 per k (pretty much all down hill - gentle) and push the last 4 at what I feel I can, aiming for 5:45. Be honest, does that sound likely or setting myself up for a failure? For reference I averaged 6:05 min/k for the 20k run and that was a bit more hilly6
