I've been fretting over this question, because although I do many things which benefit my tomorrow self, it feels dishonest to say I am doing them for that reason, when I feel like I am doing them for today. I'm terrible at adulting. I do best when I translate my motivations into something that gives me instant feedback. For example I have been better about saving money, working to create a decent emergency fund. But I fail ludicrously when I think, "Future me might have an emergency." I do much better when I frame it, "If I know I have an emergency fund, today me will have less anxiety." I work out and watch my blood sugar because I know I may go blind or lose my feet if I have uncontrolled diabetes. But I do better knowing that today I look pretty in clothes and feel strong. I am an instant gratification kind of person.
One thing I've been doing lately that really does benefit tomorrow me is not allowing myself to procrastinate. I ask myself, "Is there any reason to believe you will feel any more like doing this unpleasant task later than you do right now?" Usually, nope, I'm gonna hate it in the future just as much, so do it now, and then it's done. I get to enjoy the time after it's done without something hanging over my head.
Another thing is never allowing myself to say I just don't want to know something. "It feels like I've been spending a lot, I should check the balance on my checking account, but I don't want to know." Nope! If you don't want to know, do it, right now. "I think I may have eaten too many carbs but if I don't check my blood sugar I can pretend it was probably okay." Yeah, check your blood sugar, and you'll know next time whether that was too many.
So insightful. I do this too, but hadn't been able to put it in words.6 -
Just ran 4.5 miles. Hot out there (84F at the end) but half my route was in the shade. Feeling pretty good.8

11/1 4miles
11/2 rest
For the first time since following training, 19 months, I’m skipping a training run. Not just any training run, but my longest run in my marathon training plan. Ugh. I’m battling a cold and decided yesterday not to run today. I knew if I ran 18 miles that I’d probably make my cold much worse than it is.
I’m going to repeat this week’s plan next week. Hopefully, I’m not messing up.
I’m not even going to set a goal for this month. I just want to finish this plan and survive running 26.2miles at some point towards the end of the month.

I’d bet that “taking care of your health” is somewhere in the fine print of that training plan. Feel better!8 -

You could really mess yourself up trying to follow a training plan precisely when your body needs rest more than it needs the exercise. Just do the best you can, and understand that you can't get to the finish line if you don't get to the start line.12 -

Which leads to the Monthly question...
What in the world have you done for your tomorrow self this year? Done done. Not gonna do. Not gonna get done honey. DONE.
In September I decided to do a “no eating out challenge”. It was really to save money, so I didn’t count outings/parties where food was free. I managed to make it 44 days!
I don’t know about you guys, but eating out chews up (pun intended ) a lot of our budget. So we saved a lot of money and I lost a few pounds without even trying.
I want to do it again. Maybe I’ll start tomorrow....

I find it unbelievable that c25k/10K make it the standard to be running 10 minute miles when it is designed to help people who could not even run for a minute straight. In 60 minutes I run 5 miles, not 6.2. Don’t mind my ranting
11/2: 4.1 miles
Cumulative for November: 4.1/50 miles
Upcoming race: Thursday 11/22 Feaster Five Thanksgiving Road Race: Approximately 5 miles
12 -
2---2.24 intervals
2.24/65
Upcoming Races
December 1st Dinosaur Valley Endurance Run. 5 Mile Glen Rose TX
January 5 BIRR Ultra relay. 50k. Hawaii. For @KeepRunningFatboy
March 31, 2019 A2A Undecided distance. Ardmore OK
April 28, 2019 OKC Memorial Marathon (half)4 -
I am in the 100 mile club again for November. I ran 120 miles in October and would have run more if not for temporary sidelining.
What have I done for my future self?
I became a healthy weight from morbidly obese.
I started running and lifting weights.
I am furthering my education.
@hanlonsk Thank you for the recommendation and for tagging me here as I had not seen this thread yet.
@Avidkeo I hear you. I used to wear a 44F. I lost 115 pounds (found 15 of them again) and now wear a 38C.
Oh I wish I was a C! 32f is frustrating cause apparently you aren't supposed to have big boobs if you are a size 10/12. Grrr. I started as a G at my heaviest so I guess I shouldn't complain too much. If I had a spare 15k, I'd get a reduction. Fortunately I don't get any medical problems from them - or unfortunately cause if I did then I'd be covered.
I imagine it is a ridiculous frustration for you. I have other issues that may be too graphic for the men here. I hate how certain things are and are not covered by insurance. But that's a whole other thing.
Ya know.... You could still share and put a tmi warning. And use the spoiler option. I'm not squeamish and am an aging female. Or we could just create a thread for running females, men enter at their own risk4 -

Endurance and pace aren't necessarily related. When I started to turn myself into a runner, I had to slow to a walk after 1 minute. But the first time the program called for a continual run instead of intervals, the average pace that popped out was 7:45 per mile.
I suspect that to the extent a 10 minute mile is standard, that's because that's where the fat part of the bell curve of paces lands. In the program I pace for, the largest pace groups are 10:00 and 10:30 per mile.2 -

You mean that's not what the "Let's talk sports bras" thread is about? With that title, it sounds way too dangerous for me to enter.6 -

Oooh ya. If bra talk seems like something thats risky you definitely dont want in on our other concerns. Unless we just start sharing pics of us in bras huggin' each other. Runners gone wild sort of thing, then you might be take a pass4 -

I really wish ladies would stop assuming this about men. It is just silliness. Seriously. Its like on the TV show when they show the guy scared to by tampons. For real? Dude they are just sponges with a string on them. Whatever.7 -

My husband still refuses to by them. Its a thing.
And we women dont really want to share our concerns with men, they don't understand and are not typically helpful in matters. Its a sisterhood. We enjoy that. Its like bromance.5 -

Plus 10 makes the math easier. I get frustrated about that kind of thing too, @amirahdaboss, then I remember that as a short, heavier, somewhat older woman, I just have to work harder than someone taller, lighter, younger and possessing more testosterone for the same results. No shame in that.3 -

Hell, I just wear stretchy pull-on things and even I'm too scared to enter that thread.2 -

My husband buys them for me when I ask. When he's confused about brand etc he takes pictures and texts them to me.4
