My husband would agree with you and he catches them for a living. I think crab is overrated. Too much work for so little meat.

Speaking of nostalgia, I have another item for the thread - shrimp boiling. When I was young, we would visit some of my favorite older relatives in the FL panhandle and whenever there was a big family gathering (and it was whenever we were there) they would do a shrimp boil. Boiling shrimp makes some people want to retch; some people will tolerate it at best because they enjoy boiled shrimp. Very few people enjoy the odor of a shrimp boil. It stirs up a lot of emotions for me and makes me smile. Shrimp boiled with Old Bay is one of my absolute favorite foods.

My family in SC has a crab crack, or crab boil, when everyone gets together. Any leftover crab is mixed into rice or omelettes.

Cooked fruit (except for berries) is disgusting.

Fruit in salad or in things like chicken/tuna salad is gross.

I hate bacon wrapped food. I love bacon, but I don't want everything else to taste like it.

Coconut is gross and has a weird texture. The smell of it makes me gag and it ticks me off that every moisturizing shampoo smells like it!

Cauliflower mash will NEVER taste like normal mashed potatoes!

    Spaghetti squash is terrible.

We are completely opposite in our tastes! I do, however, agree that cauliflower mash does not taste like mashed potatoes but nonetheless it is yummy in its own right.

I wonder what accounts for taste preferences? Some preferences, I assume, are experiential or cultural but what differs in peoples' taste buds or other factors that lead to such different preferences?

I think a huge amount is experiential and cultural, but there are also natural differences in how sensitive we are to certain tastes. Some people really, really love sweet, some hate bitter, some are weird and think cilantro tastes bad (kind of kidding), etc.

There was a fun podcast I listened to on this recently: https://insitome.libsyn.com/the-genetics-of-taste

Okay, how did you know that I am one of the 'weird' cilantro haters? - LOL

Seriously, it tastes awful to me and it literally makes me sick to my stomach. This reaction to cilantro is known to be a genetic issue. One of my sisters has the same reaction to it; however, our other siblings do not.

Hot cocoa is hot chocolate for losers.

And today I learned that hot cocoa and hot chocolate are not interchangeable/regional preference.

I make it from scratch, sometimes with cocoa powder, sometimes with melting chocolate. It just depended on what I had in the kitchen when I started pulling out the sauce pan. No matter what, you better like ground cayenne pepper or ancho chili , cinnamon, and vanilla in it if you are at my house.

Yeah, that's why I brought up cilantro, since it is genetic.

I love it, but my sister claims it tastes metallic and does not like it. We clearly don't taste it the same way at all.

It's almost like MFP knew how ridiculous it was and hid it in the nested quote.

Well, it is an unpopular opinions thread :sunglasses:

Didn't we talk about this like, 40 pages ago? Or was that the if it didn't have calories thread? Probably both.

Yes, my unpopular opinion is that I don't think donuts are worth the calories, ever.

My honest belief is that anyone who thinks that has clearly never had good fresh donuts. But I respect your right to be wrong, and admire you not being ashamed of your wrongness

I like ketchup on hot dogs. If that means I have the palate of a 7 year old boy, so be it.

Mayo is disgusting, but for some reason I can stomach it in tuna salad and macaroni salad as long as there isn't, like, clumps of it. And I like ranch dressing, which makes no sense because it's basically mayo with a seasoning blend mixed in.

It's possible I just haven't tried the right one, but I don't like fried doughs in general - fried pies, beignets, fritters, and funnel cake also don't thrill me.

I think ranch dressing is vile. My dressing of choice (both on salads and as a condiment) is Caesar. Mayo is ok in small amounts, but not glopped on like many fast food restaurant seem to do.

Only mustard belongs on hot dogs, unless it's a chili dog, in which case chili and cheese are acceptable on top of the mustard, but not onions. Pickle relish is disgusting.

Yeah, pickle relish is a bizarre monstrosity. And since it's rarely used, I'd bet most jars were manufactured in the 80's.

I think donuts are safer... as in an average donut will be better than an average muffin. But a really good muffin is in a class by itself. And FWIW... lemon poppy seed muffins/bread are a sleeper dessert.

Condiments are overrated. And the only reason for overrated rather than gross is because of BBQ sauce. BBQ sauce saves the entire grocery store isle.

A bad muffin is worse than a bad donut, I'll grant you that  I won't waste calories on inferior baked goods.

Lemon is the best dessert flavor for just about anything. I have a killer recipe for lemon pound cake I haven't made in far too long because the 'pound' part of the name is far too accurate!

I've had good fresh donuts - used to work somewhere that made them at breakfast, so could literally pull one off the production line warm from the fryer. Everyone thought they were good, even I thought they were good . . . for donuts. Still not worth the calories, sorry. You can eat my share.

But most commercial muffins are way too sweet, and way too oily; usually the nuts are chopped too fine (I can usually barely perceive them). I make excellent buttermilk muffins, and I'm not the only one who thinks so (basic version has walnuts and raisins, but I do variations).

I agree it is difficult to buy a decent muffin. I'm spoiled to our own home baking! Donuts are something I'd never make at home (along with most other deep fried foods) so maybe the comparison is unfair.
