I don’t avoid nuts/nut butters/seeds but I keep in mind how quickly they add up! Same with things like granola.13

Tracking calories are eye-opening. But was it tasty?10

Oh! And honey! And alcohol! And cheese!
Man, calories really go fast...4 -

I avoid nothing. I may eat something less often because the calories don't fit, but that is the extent of it. I still enjoy the higher calorie foods.19

Teddys bigger burgers. Their average burger has 1500 calories and it's not very big either.3

You know, I know it doesn’t necessarily break the calorie bank but I’m annoyed beans have so many calories. Half a cup is nothing and is like 110 calories, so a full cup is 220 calories. I always just assumed beans were so good for me and I used to load up on them (the days where I was not calorie counting) but now I’d rather get most of my protein from some eggs or lean turkey or something.
I find beans very filling, especially when combined with rice, or, with an equal amount of mixed veggies stirred in.
They are one of my staples, and I think of them as my #1 filler-up-cheap meals.
When I think of other things that provide 110 calories in a serving, i'm pleased at the variety of foods available to satisfy my current taste desires while still meeting my nutrition targets.

Why is 200 calories a fifth of your allotment? A thousand calories per day is not an appropriate goal for 99% of adults.35

I don't really avoid any foods other than the ones I am sensitive to, but I do have to be very mindful of nuts/nut butters. I sat down for a snack the other night and ended up eating over 600 calories of mixed nuts--and it didn't even seem like much, volume wise. A cup, maybe?3

"Why is 200 calories a fifth of your allotment? A thousand calories per day is not an appropriate goal for 99% of adults."
To answer that - I'm doing 1200 a day, I have a sedentary lifestyle due to work and physical limitations. The dip and 5 crackers was about 230-240. I did not know that when I ate, it or I would have just skipped it all together, not enough nutrition for a couple of bites. I would have rather had potato chips if I was going to rack up the calories.
So far the 1200 a day is working for me, I started about a month ago, and am down 9 lbs. But I think that in general, there are some foods just not worth it. Yes, If I really desire something sure, but if you go to a party, especially at xmas - I would have rather had a small brownie which I happen to have skipped.12 -
I really did not make the connection that milkshakes and lattes had SO many calories. Years ago when I didn't log, I would have imagined a medium strawberry shake to be similar in calories to a one scoop strawberry sundae, and a peppermint mocha from Starbucks to be similar to having a large coffee at home with a couple tbsp. of peppermint creamer in it. SOOOOO wrong on both counts! lol10

A friend who is a registered dietitian often says, "all foods fit".. "there are no bad foods" - so I try to plan ahead and not restrict anything - just use portion control and common sense.17

I poured a bowl of granola tonight in the amount I wanted to eat and it was over 600 calories without milk. Poured it back in the bag and has something else instead.21

Peanut butter/nut butters 😭2

I don’t agree with “there are no bad foods” some calories are so high they shouldn’t be eaten, especially for overweight people - like me trying to reduce 40+ in my phase 1. During this phase Licorice (180 cals per 3 pieces is completely off) plus now the dip I identified. In an ideal state sure we can control everything we eat, but clearly that hasn’t happened, hence the reason a good amount of us are here. We may be thinking something is ok and it’s not, size certainly isn’t an indication always of calories. Oh - once I learned how holindaise was made, butter butter I never ate it again - Keep those surprises coming.18

Vitamin Water.. 120 calories. Only found out after the fact, I mean really, it's water!! And vitamins!!4

Some people are moderators and some are abstainers. But I would say no one can abstain from everything they love that isn't traditionally considered 'healthy' (in quotes because I'm of the 'no bad foods, just bad quantities' ilk) indefinitely.
I'm not the longest maintainer here, by far, but am closing in on 2 years straight logged and am maintaining at the top of normal BMI currently. Just the sticky vanity pounds to go. This process is too long to give up everything you love.17 -
I think the calories in some things make them not worth it (it's how I normally feel about cake, which I'm not the biggest fan of anyway), but that doesn't mean I never, ever eat them. (And it doesn't make them bad foods -- naan and curry are foods I love but have no desire to moderate, so I tend to eat them less often, and try to do it on a good exercise day, like a long run or long bike day. It wouldn't make sense to me to call them bad foods just because of the calories.)
I still use butter in cooking sometimes, and oil, which has the same calories, for example, and would use hollandaise on occasion. I've learned to moderate good cheese (which used to be something I overate regularly).
There's not much I was really surprised by. I guess this paleo granola I tried was much higher than expected (and impossible to stop eating), so that I decided to forego, but I'm really take it or leave it with granola.6 -

Unrealistic calorie deficit. Why? because eventually you will start adding back more calories as 1200 is not sustainable for the vast majority of people. Especially sedentary people.
Almost everyone on here will agree that losing weight and keeping it off requires more than just calorie restriction. Lifestyle change is really what you need. You absolutely must include some exercise.
Get moving more and properly track what you eat, not guess. As you have learned, guessing makes it incredibly difficult to know just how many calories you are actually consuming. Read labels use the internet and start measuring.
And last but not least...a sustained calorie deficit at 1200 calories can cause more than just weight loss. Too few calories can cause a host of health issues. So ask yourself, is it worth losing weight if you are compromising your health?12 -
Well I don't really tell myself on avoiding food but subconsciously I do. Like avocados I thought were healthy but I overate them and I wasn't seeing progress4

Am I the only one who thinks that peanut butter isn't really all that high calorie?
Some peanut butters/nut butters are 170-180 calories & I'll usually have 1.5 servings & find that's more than enough for a rice cake or to eat on its own.6 -

Nope, i could eat the whole jar in one sitting if I wasn't aware of the calories...6 -

Not sure about the calories - but i think I am only one on here who doesnt like the stuff - reason I dont know about the calories is because I have never eaten any in my entire 5 years of calorie tracking

I don't particularly like peanut butter. Don't hate it, don't mind the flavor, but the idea of eating it does not appeal to me.4

Omg totally. Basically any flavored coffee drink shocks me. In calories AND sugar.2 -

I am glad I'm not the only one! This kind of thing floored me. I remember when I initially jointed MFP in 2013, I was like "this is crazy, I used to get mochas and lattes around 350-450 cal ALL THE TIME and now I am having a Snickers ice cream bar (250 cal) weekly for a treat and it's less calories?!"2 -

I'm also on a 1200 calorie eating plan and that was set by my dietician. I've met with her for the past 3 months and she reviews my food logs to make sure the calories I'm ingesting are mostly from veggies and lean meats. There are some days I'm really hungry but most days I'm content with the amount I'm eating. I don't go to bed hungry. It helps to spread out the calories into several smaller meals.
As for which foods surprised me were high in calories, almost all salad dressings. I love Ranch and haven't found a good low cal version or a good substitute.5
