Whoa- I had no idea there were that many calories in X. Foods to avoid.

Pasta. It's just an occasional treat nowadays. I was surprised that I do enjoy zucchini noodles in their place.
Rice. Cauliflower 'rice' has been a great replacement.6 -
I'm not the longest maintainer here, by far, but am closing in on 2 years straight logged and am maintaining at the top of normal BMI currently. Just the sticky vanity pounds to go. This process is too long to give up everything you love.[/quote]
~ good on the maintenance. I'm willing to forgo some items for sure - even permanently, the ROI if you will isn't worth it. Albeit I've only been logging for 30 days, but I'm not having any significant cravings for food that I've cut out thus far. Will I ever eat dill potato chips again, probably. Will I eat spinach dip again - not if I can help it. I went to an event yesterday - and avoided the dip, instead had some soft cheese I preferred (which is a treat in of itself). Some foods however are pretty high in calories - and you wouldn't necessarily know it - like the Vitamin water someone mentioned above - even buns like at Subway for a foot long - no wonder on biggest loser they would carve out some of that bread (before I saw that I wouldn't think to carve out some of the bread - but it makes sense.
Congrats on logging for 2 years, that's fantastic!!! Amazing dedication.

Unrealistic calorie deficit. Why? because eventually you will start adding back more calories as 1200 is not sustainable for the vast majority of people. Especially sedentary people.
...
And last but not least...a sustained calorie deficit at 1200 calories can cause more than just weight loss. Too few calories can cause a host of health issues. So ask yourself, is it worth losing weight if you are compromising your health?
I'm also on a 1200 calorie eating plan and that was set by my dietician. I've met with her for the past 3 months and she reviews my food logs to make sure the calories I'm ingesting are mostly from veggies and lean meats. There are some days I'm really hungry but most days I'm content with the amount I'm eating. I don't go to bed hungry. It helps to spread out the calories into several smaller meals.
As for which foods surprised me were high in calories, almost all salad dressings. I love Ranch and haven't found a good low cal version or a good substitute.
Bolthouse dressings are good.0 -

I really like the Vitamin Water Zero - it's Stevia. If you are used to/don't mind that Stevia aftertaste, it's pretty satisfying0 -

Am I the only one who thinks that peanut butter isn't really all that high calorie?
Some peanut butters/nut butters are 170-180 calories & I'll usually have 1.5 servings & find that's more than enough for a rice cake or to eat on its own.
I have a weird relationship with peanut butter. When I weigh out a portion and stick to it I find it is plenty and as you say not really that bad calorie wise. But if I throw caution to the wind and just mindlessly scoop PB onto bread or into a smoothie or god forbid grab the jar and a spoon, I could easily eat 1,000 calories of it in no time.
For me PB and dry cereal were shockers. Not for the # of calories per serving, but for how much more than a serving I thought was a serving! Both are foods I don't go near without a food scale.3 -

My favorite ranch dressing is 140 calories for 2 tbsp, which is a pitiful serving size. I still use it, but not every day like I used to (and I measure it out).3

How is that nonsense?
How is it NOT fact about her personal experience?
How could you read this as if she were trying to act as a nutritionist? It's about her own experience!
Personally I have trouble eyeballing pasta, since I underestimate how much it increases in size when cooked.10 -

Dear Posters,
Just a quick reminder regarding one of the MFP guidelines:1. Play Nice
I WILL:
• I will be respectful and understand that everyone is different. Some members are new to this, so be kind to the newbies.
• I will remember the human on the other side of the screen.
• I will share my opinions while respecting others' thoughts and feelings as well.
• I will be ready to hear and accept other opinions that I might not always agree with.
• I will ignore users.
I WON’T:
• I won’t be a jerk.
• I will not attack, mock, or otherwise insult others. I can respectfully disagree with the message or topic, but I cannot attack the messenger. This includes attacks against the member’s spelling or command of written English, belittling a member for posting a duplicate discussion, or attacking a member for posting in an older discussion. (ie. It’s lose not loose, strong first post, didn’t you already post this today, etc.) Not every member has the same level of education, so I’ll refrain from criticizing a member for not framing their content in a manner befitting a university-level science paper.
• I won’t pick apart how something is said; I will focus on the meaning/message.

Imagine what you'll get to spew when you hit 20k!!!

Both are foods I don't go near without a food scale.
Just curious, are you a nutritionist?
Nope.
That's what I figured, thanks.
Do you have some insight that she may be missing? Curious.
nope
I also don't have 10,000 posts spewing nonsense like its fact.

Well, I guess we know what broke MFP then...
It's like the Y2K thing... except different.3 -
X=Spinach Dip....2 tablespoons and a couple of crackers over 200 calories. Blew 1/5th of my calories for day in 3 bites.
I don't consider foods something to avoid, other that those I dislike. However, there are some that aren't worth taking the calorie hit on a daily basis, so they become once or twice a week (sometimes less), or I look for ways to adapt them. On the other hand, there are some foods that are lower calorie or higher satiety to the point that they are well worth consuming more frequently. It takes some time to adjust and adapt and to figure out which is which. I don't eat restaurant foods often. I can usually make a lower calorie version that tastes pretty good.1
