Hi all, I used to post here a few years ago, not sure why I stopped but hope you'll have me back!
2018 was a really crappy year for me as I lost my Dad to bowel cancer. I stopped runni g for a few months after as I used to run to help deal with his treatments and stress. Once he passed I felt like I didn't know how to run anymore.
Fast forward 7 months and I am back to running 5-10 km each run.. I now use running as a way to remember my Dad.. Think about the funny things he used to do or say.
I've just signed up to run a 30km ultra trail in July (on his birthday which is freaky) so I've got something to work towards now.
Yesterday was my longest run to date at 26km (virtual run) using Parkrun as part of the run too.
Currently I'm sitting at 42km for January.

4.5 miles on this beautiful, sunny, 65 degree day! I'd almost forgotten what sunshine looked/felt like. I figured out a way, finally, to slow myself down - accidentally map out a route that's about 70% uphill. Oops! Oh, well, it's good for the glutes, at least.
8.5/45.0 miles for January so far.13 -
Wanted to do another 20 today, but couldn't get that last mile in. Despite the perfect weather, it felt harder than the 20 two weeks ago. I guess I really need a taper. Two weeks from marathon. Not feeling as confident now.
Ha, if I would have been able to get that last mile in today, my ticker would be at 26.2 That would have been a sign.

Had a resolution 5k this morning. There was about 60ish participants, mostly walkers. It was through my SIL work. I started off a bit faster than planned and I paid for it by mile 3. I had a lady ahead of me that I was trying to pass starting around mile 2 and I just couldn't push myself hard enough. I ended up 17th overall and 3rd in my age group (if I could have passed that lady I would have been second! BOO)
I will post photos on Instagram later today if anyone is interested. LOL15 -

Ha! Congrats on the AG finish. It's refreshing to see someone as competitive as I am.
I saw my new nemesis, the lady who won my AG at St Jude's, running at the park the other day. Smiled and waved. I'm gonna beat her someday!11 -

19 miles is still great two weeks out - definitely you need the taper, that sounds totally normal. You are ready! Enjoy a cut-back to rest and be ready to go on marathon day. You will feel great. You've got this!7 -

I warmed up a bit and headed to the start line, hiding near the back as that’s as far as my confidence took me. I set my watch when I started the run and then turned off the screen. I chatted to people on the way round, shouted a big thank you to every marshal and generally enjoyed myself at a pace that felt at the top end of easy, not realising what pace I was actually doing. I refused to look at the race clock every time we ran round past the start again and just tried to enjoy myself.
So, what did I do today? I accidentally did something I never thought I would do - I ran an EASY sub-50. I was only 40seconds away from a PB, and yet it didn’t feel hard. This, more than a PB could, told those negative voices to shut up. Six months ago, I still struggled to do this; six months ago, I couldn’t run a sub-50 without a LOT of effort, let alone do it easy after a couple of lazy months.
It turns out that my fitness hasn’t been affected at all, the only thing that’s taken a beating is my mentality. If anything, that rest period has probably done me some good - My body must have needed the downtime.
We really are our own worst enemies aren’t we?

Hahaha, I wonder what I would have done if I read that earlier.
I had planned to do a 10 km race this morning but I ran parkrun (5 km) a bit fast yesterday (29:08), plus I did too much raking, sweeping, and sawing in the garden yesterday and my back has been hurting all night, plus our cat Lady woke me up around midnight vomiting.
Wasn't in proper condition to push myself for a good official 10K time, which was the only reason I wanted to do it, so I decided to stay home and I'm enjoying a relaxed but somewhat productive day.
We will never know if I could have done a good time, but I feel happy I was wise not to risk injury, and not to stress out about something that was not a feature goal for the year.6 -

I would say the lesson I learned was that listening to my body was the right choice, and sounds like you did that It’s what led me to drop my running right back during October-December and it not have had an impact on my fitness, and it’s what led me to a great run, purely running by feel.

A friend picked up Kody today for a 7 mile trail run then I headed to the gym.
60 minutes elliptical followed by 40 minutes LateralX, for a total of 8.3 miles. I wanted to do all LateralX but a sore hip made me think I'd been over using it.
Back for much more tomorrow.

Hi all, newbie here. Sounds like fun so I'll join. I'll go for 50 and see what happens. Been a "casual" runner for a while but wanting to ramp up consistently. Looking forward to it!

SO HASHTAG GRRR! I accidentally put my watch in the wrong screen and cheated myself a mile. *sigh* - I have this mode called "Race Screen" that supposed to predict race completion so you can adjust your pace on the fly and all that and is all very complicated. I never use the stupid thing because it is way too much data to work with on the run. Tonight I will have to figure out how to uninstall it. I THOUGHT it read that I had completed 16 miles, but guess not! Only 15. *sigH* I probably could have run another 5 miles, but I was tight on time and had decided ahead of time to stick to the 16 on the plan. Ah well. 1-mile shy probably will not kill me. Probably.

I had a fantastic run today. Actually my run was sandwiched between two walking segments, for a total of 85 minutes, but I tracked each segment separately so I could break out the running mileage.
I wanted to shorten my run today because I was sort of feeling as if I had increased my running distance a little too quickly. I looked back over my plan and my goal was to be running 3+ miles a day by the end of the month. Before this month I had really only been running 1-2 miles a day, so I though I should back off a bit. I will probably do a 5k tomorrow for Just Do it Sunday on the Nike Run Club App.
Today, I did another Peloton running workout on the treadmill. I started their 6 week Road to 5k program. it isn’t a C25k, but more of a run your best 5k program. It is a beginner program, but It assumes that you are already doing a bit of running. It starts off slow, but you are still jogging or running for most of the 30 minute workout, with a couple of short walk breaks.
I am really enjoying the Peloton app, it is so motivating. Plus, I think this running class will really help me with my form because they talked a lot about form during the first class. No one has ever really told me how to run, and I have always thought I was doing it wrong.9 -

Coach called for a 6km long run today, which is the farthest I've run in about 2 months. I was a bit apprehensive ahead of time since every time I've tried to increase distance since getting hurt I've just managed to set myself back. Also felt a bit icky earlier today, which I'm pretty sure was PMS.
(My long run today was longer than my easy runs from mid-summer and yet it was intimidating. How sad is that.)
Anyway, I told myself that I'm a woman who sticks to her training plan, got my running gear on and headed out the door. Now I'm back and my ankle feels fine, my hip twinged a bit while running but I'm pretty sure that's an I'm not as young as I used to be twinge, and honestly my biggest complaint was the wind. It was awful, and coming steadily out of the southeast. I ran north for a bit, and I ran west for a bit, but eventually I had to run south and east again to get home. And then I was almost home and a bit short on distance so I ran down a side street and got to run SE again.
Anyway, that run is done! Walked a bit more than I would have liked after the halfway point, but I think I managed a pretty consistent pace with minimal walking for the first half.
Onward and upward!

I actually read all the posts and have for about a year now, although sometimes that’s the only leisure reading I do all day (I also I read the way most Americans watch TV, ie a lot). I’ve certainly given up on commenting as frequently as I would if this site used nested comments/threading.
Ever since high school I’ve been a part of high-volume online communities, usual related to my dominant interest or hobby and often for years at a time - it’s interesting to look back and see how those changes reflect my personal growth. In high school I was part of a mental health support email list, in college Livejournal then Facebook were my main communities, then Blizzard’s World of Warcraft forums, then Jezebel, then I bounced around a few writing communities, then a job search advice site called Ask a Manager, finally the general forums here and now this thread. Whew!
ETA: also, I totally got to run nine miles today and it was awesome and I took photos and will update later.7 -

Hahaha, nerd fight!!! Forums (critical thinking & logic communities in forums and on Facebook) have been my internet pastime for 25 years, and I HATE nested comments/threading on forums. I avoid Reddit precisely for that reason.3 -

There are months I can keep up, and months I can. Since I have a full-time day job, am a pastor, a writer, and most of all a father and husband, I timebox things. I read very fast compared to most people so that helps But when the timebox is up I have to cut and run so I miss things. But today I taught my 15 year old how to remove, repair and put back a wall socket. Calling that a win no matter what else got missed.16 -
